LOWELLVILLE The
Youngstown Lions Club has
been hosting turtle races for
49 years and Senator
Schiavoni decided to join in
the fun on June 28 in down-
town Lowellville.
He named his turtle Old Steel-
shell the Defender and was at
the race to show his support.
I never realized how many
people participate in the Turtle
Derby, Senator Schiavoni
said.
Although my turtle didnt fair so well in his heat, it was an exciting event and the Lions
Club did a great job organizing the races and festivities.
The Lions Club sponsors the derby every year as its sole fundraiser. The money raised as-
sists many non-profit and charitable organizations in the Mahoning Valley.

Senator Schiavoni Thanks Korean War Veterans for Their Service
AUSTINTOWN Senator Schiavoni joined other state and local officials to
honor Korean War Veterans during the Laying of the Roses ceremony at Austin-
town Veterans Memorial Park on June 27.
The event doubled as the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway naming
ceremony. In early February House Bill 27, which designates 16 memorial high-
ways, was adopted by the state. Three of those memorial highways are locatedin Mahoning County, including the Korean War Veterans Memorial Highway,
which is the entire length of Interstate 680 in the county.
Ive met many soldiers that served in the Korean War and Im so
glad one of the memorial highways is honoring their commitment
to our country, Senator Schiavoni said. Its often called the for-
gotten war and hopefully the new sign will help people remember
the sacrifices made by our Korean War Veterans.
