U.S. Sen. Al Franken and renowned chil- dren's education advocate Geoffrey Canada visited PCYC on October 2 as part of a tour of the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) in North Minneapolis. Canada is president and CEO of the Harlem Children's Zone (HCZ), an organization he founded in the 1990's. His groundbreaking work, to overcome seemingly intractable problems to increase children's academic achievement, has been profiled on the TV show 60 Minutes and in the documentary "Waiting for Superman." PCYC is an anchor partner of NAZ, which is replicating Canada’s revolutionary Harlem Children's Zone in creating a com- munity-wide approach so all young children achieve academic success through high school and college, and success in the job market. Sondra Samuels, NAZ President and CEO led the tour. Franken and Canada met students, family mem- bers, mentors, and staff at PCYC’s After School En- richment Program. Both visitors enjoyed interacting with a group of inquisitive 4th and 5th grade students who wanted to know how they chose their profes- sions as a senator and educator. Last December, Northside Achievement Zone was selected as one of only five sites in the country to receive $28 million in federal Promise Neighbor- hood funding over five years to improve children's educational outcomes in North Minneapolis. The money will be used to support partnerships with schools, organizations, and families to signif- icantly improve educational opportunities by sup- porting children from birth to college. “Are we there yet?”Dear Friends of PCYC,

As we near the end of 2012, we take this opportunity to report back to you on what we have accomplished on our StrategicPlan for 2007–2012, and what is yet to be done.

Strategic Goal 1: Increase opportunities for school and life success.Key Accomplishment – Significantly contributed to the emergence of the Northside Achievement Zone (NAZ) as a majorforce in the community. PCYC’s model of academic enrichment was chosen as the base design for the NAZ scale-upthrough a $28 million federal Promise Neighborhood grant, doubling our enrollment for the Summer Friends and AfterSchool Enrichment Programs.

Strategic Goal 2: Tackle the achievement gap head-on.Key Accomplishment – The PYC Arts & Tech High School increased academic rigor and instructional excellence and hasbegun to shift the focus of our student-scholars toward a culture of achievement. As a result, reading scores have increasedby 10% and are still trending upward.

Strategic Goal 3: Lead the Capri Theater Renaissance.Key Accomplishment – The Capri was named the “Best Jazz Venue” in the Twin Cities in 2011 by Minnesota Monthlymagazine. Season ticket sales for the Legends Jazz series are at an all time high, as are rentals of the Capri by organizationsand performers region-wide. The Capri core operating value to involve youth in all aspects of operations has resulted inthe new Capri After School Theater (CAST) program, a collaboration with the Children’s Theatre Company.

Strategic Goal 4: Stimulate action for a bright North Minneapolis future.Key Accomplishment – Slowly but surely the West Broadway/Penn Avenue node redevelopment is taking shape, with newretail, housing, and transit moving off the drawing board into reality. The 2011 tornado cleared the path for visionary com-munity development. PCYC will lead the way on the Capri Block by purchasing now vacant lots adjacent to the Capri forour Capri Renaissance Phase II.

Strategic Goal 5: Sustain the mission.Key Accomplishment – The public profile of all PCYC programs has been markedly enhanced and PCYC is widely rec-ognized as a vibrant effective organization. The Capri enjoys monthly media attention. Educators and politicians visit ourprograms regularly, the most recent visitor being Geoffrey Canada of the Harlem Children’s Zone and Senator Al Frankento see our Afterschool Program in action. Our board and staff are strong yet continually seeking ways to achieve greaterresults in the lives of the children, youth and families of this community.

But are we there yet? Is our work done? Of course not. In the context of the Five Year Strategic Plan, there were some ob-jectives we did not accomplish. Among other disappointments, we lost two important programs due to funding shifts. Wehave not significantly reduced our debt, though we are handling the burden satisfactorily. Safety is an ever present worry, and hunger and homelessness are abiding concerns. The list of problems we have not solved can be daunting.

No, we are not there yet, but our progress is real and is gaining in momentum and critical mass.

Thanks to you, the PCYC Family, we are hopeful for the future of our young people and this community.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers and join us even more vigorously on this remarkable PCYC mission to enrichthe skills, prospects and spirit of North Minneapolis youth and adults, in partnership with families and communities.

Respectfully yours,

When PCYC launched the Capri Theater Renais-sance nearly six years ago, “youth developmentwith a heavy emphasis on youth engagement” be-came an important guiding principle for Caprioperations and program-ming. Today the CapriTheater youth apprenticesare an integral part of ourvenue’s staff, workingside-by-side with our pro-fessional team at Caprievents including the Leg-ends jazz series, Saint PaulChamber Orchestra con-certs and Freedom ofXpression Open Mic ses-sions.

Kiyoltan Suggs, a senior atPYC Arts & Tech HighSchool, is one of five stu-dents employed at theCapri this year, and he hasbeen sharing his gifts as avisual artist as part of hisapprenticeship.

Thanks to generous sup-port from the Carlson Fam-ily Foundation, PCYC hasbeen expanding both itshigh school theater andyouth apprentice programsat the Capri. “This supporthas also allowed us tolaunch an exciting collabo-ration with the Children’sTheatre Company,” saysKarl Reichert, director ofthe Capri Theater.

There was quite a process in coming up with aname and design for the program. “Our artisticassociates Kevin West and Dennis Spears cameup with the name Capri After School Theater

(CAST).”

As the artistic team dis-cussed ideas for the logo,Dennis insisted that the let-ters for CAST should fea-ture marquee lights … andKarl asked Kiyoltan to as-sist him in creating agraphic design that wouldreflect the Capri and thestudents it serves.

“Kiyoltan created two out-standing graphics for ouryouth theater productionsthis summer – The GirlWho Cried Wolf directedby Dennis featuring North-side middle school studentsand Puzzle Pieces pre-sented by our CAST stu-dents under the direction ofKevin,” Karl says. “I knewthat Kiyoltan would createthe perfect images for ourlogo … illustrating a repre-sentation of our CASTmembers.”
