What is Bt?
•Bt is short for Bacillus thuringiensis, a type of bacteria found naturally in soil.
•This species of bacteria produces various proteins, some of which are toxic to caterpillars of certain moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera), or to larvae of certain beetles (Coleoptera).
•Bt proteins are considered environmentally friendly pesticides because they are toxic only to specific types of insect larvae, and break down to non-toxic substances when exposed to sunlight.
What is Bt Sweet Corn?
•Bt sweet corn refers to sweet corn hybrids that have been genetically enhanced using biotechnology to contain one or more genes that produce Bt proteins.
• In Bt sweet corn, the protein(s) are produced throughout the plant: leaves, stalks, pollen, and roots.
•The main targets of the protein(s) may be the European corn borer and other Lepidopteran pests, or corn rootworm beetles.

Plant produces a Bt protein
Insect ingests protein
High pH breaks down the protein to
active protoxin
Protoxin activated by specific enzyme
and attaches to gut cell wall
Cell wall of the gut is destroyed
Insect stops eating, and gut
bacteria kills the insect

Recommendations for corn earworm
control?
•Monitor moth flights – pheromone traps are best option.
•Make preventive sprays when CEW is anticipated.
•Scout fields for eggs, larvae, signs of damage.
• If ANY damage from CEW is observed, get on a regular spray
schedule.
•Multiple applications likely to be required as hatching continues.
•Rotate insecticide modes of action.
Each female can lay up to 2000 eggs over 2wk
Neonates can move from the silk to the kernels in less than one hour
12
Develop high yielding hybrids with excellent eating quality, strong agronomic and consumer traits and improved resistance to common rust, NCLB, and MDMV.
•Stack resistances to multiple diseases and in some cases stack multiple resistance genes to a single disease.
•Extensive use of molecular markers to accelerate the conversion process.
•Monsanto’s molecular marker capabilities will accelerate our improvements.
•Biotech versions of new commercial varieties will bring increased performance, value and sustainability to the grower.
Breeding Program Objectives
This presentation is intended for use by approved and authorized Seminis® and De Ruiter™ (insert relationship – Distributors, Growers, whatever) only. Disease Resistance Breeding • Improve polygenic resistance when possible.
• Backcross single gene resistances into inbred lines to provide high level resistance.
• Stack resistances to multiple diseases and in some cases stack multiple resistance genes to a single disease.
• Extensive use of molecular markers to accelerate the conversion process.
Molecular Markers • Accelerate breeding progress.
• Greatly reduce time required for inbred conversion.
• Enables selecting for disease when no disease is present.
• Seed chip technology offers increased efficiency and time savings.
Double Haploid Breeding • DH is a method to create “instant inbreds”. Reduces to create hybrids by 2 – 4 years.
Biotech Conversions • Female lines submitted to conversion early in breeding process so biotech versions are available within 1 –
2 years of conventional hybrid release.
• Extensive version selection & equivalency testing.
• Efficacy testing to ensure that the traits are working.
Breeding Strategies
Strong commitment to develop improved hybrids
through germplasm improvement. • Increased yield
• Eating quality
• Disease resistance
• Agronomic and quality traits
Monsanto’s molecular marker capabilities will accelerate
our improvements.
Biotech hybrids will bring increase performance, value and
sustainability to the grower.
