Academy of Islamic Studies, University of MalayaSunnah Nabawiah merupakan sumber autoriti kedua di dalam Islam selepas al-Quran al-Karim. Melalui sunnah, al-Quran dapat difahami dengan lebih jelas sesuai dengan peranan Nabi SAW sebagai pembawa risalah Allah SWT. Cabaran semasa kini adalah usaha untuk mempertahankan sunnah sebagai sumber autoriti kedua tersebut amatlah mendesak. Pelbagai tohmahan dan penghinaan telah dilontarkan oleh golongan yang berusaha untuk mengugat keautoritian tersebut sehingga perlunya satu usaha untuk memberi kefahaman yang lebih jelas terhadap sunnah, bukan sahaja sebagai satu ilmu untuk diketahui oleh para penuntut dalam bidang pengajian Islam, tetapi keperluannya terhadap masyarakat awam dan golongan yang menentangnya.

Penghasilan karikatur dan filem yang menggambarkan pelbagai gambaran salah terhadap Nabi SAW adalah di antara contoh penghinaan yang memerlukan cara penyelesaian dan tindakan wajar ke arah menghalang isu tersebut daripada berulang.

Oleh yang demikian, dalam mendepani cabaran semasa yang lebih mencabar, dan keperluan untuk mempertahankan sunnah perlu distrukturkan dengan baik. Melalui kejayaan penganjuran Seminar Antarbangsa Sunnah Nabawiah: Realiti dan Cabaran Semasa (MUSNAD I) pada Julai 2011, Jabatan al-Quran dan al-Hadith, Akademi Pengajian Islam, Universiti Malaya mengorak langkah untuk menganjurkan kali kedua Seminar Antarbangsa Sunnah Nabawiah: Realiti dan Cabaran Semasa II (MUSNAD II) dengan tema “Sunnah Nabawiah Mendepani Cabaran Semasa”.

Pemilihan tema kali ini bermatlamatkan untuk melihat peranan sunnah dalam mempertahankan dan menjawab segala penghinaan terhadap Rasulullah SAW. Diharapkan, melalui penyertaan pelbagai pihak dari pelbagai negara dapat membincangkan solusi terbaik dalam mendepani pelbagai isu berkaitan sunnah melalui kajian dan penyelidikan yang mendalam. Dengan menggunakan metode pembentangan dan perbincangan, semoga hasil kajian dan penyelidikan tersebut dapat dimanfaatkan bersama demi kemajuan ummah yang bertunjangkan sunnah junjungan.

English Version:

In Islam, the prophetic tradition comes to the second place of the authoritative source of reference after the holy Qur’an. Most of the Quranic ayaat which are revealed to the Prophet Muhammad saw have been clarified by the sunnah itself. The contemporary challenges to uphold sunnah as the second most reliable sources are becoming so forceful. A wide range of accusations and offenses on the prophetic tradition have been thrown by people who attempt to give threats on its authenticity and credibility. Hence,

it is pertinent for us to initiate a discourse that can give explanation and clarification on this matter to all people worldwide.

The emerging of film and animation picture that purposely construe false image of the Prophet Muhammad saw is one example of the insulting issues that need to be addressed properly so as this matter will not recur again.

In order to preserve the Sunnah authenticity vis-a-vis the contemporary challenges, the Dept of Quran and Sunnah Studies, APIUM has successfully organized MUSNAD I, on July last year. Again, in 2013 we are inspired to reorganize the same event for the second time under the backdrop of MUSNAD II, with the theme “The Encounter of Prophetic Tradition with Current Challenges”.

The main theme of this seminar is viewing the role of the Prophetic tradition in prevailing over all elements that pose threats and offenses to the Prophet saw personality. It is hoped that participation from individual and representative of the institutions from Malaysia and abroad will come out with the best anticipation responses on the various issues that related to the prophetic tradition. We believe that this auspicious international event will provide an exceptional ground to the speakers and participants to share their research findings and ideas on addressing current issues with reference to the prophetic tradition. May this coming gathering provide thoughtful research findings from the presenters that shall benefit all participants in particular and the entire societies in general.

Seminar ini diadakan untuk mencapai beberapa objektif berikut:

1-Mendedahkan cabaran semasa dalam usaha mendepani dan mempertahankan sunnah dari pelbagi sudut dan lapangan.

2-Memberi pendedahan dan meningkatkan kesedaran umat Islam terhadap cabaran semasa dalam sunnah Nabawiah.

3. Biographical statement of participant that describes research interests and recent publications (200 words maximum)

The work of da’wah is generally considered as a responsibility to every fellow Muslims. Therefore, da’wah is suggested to be delivered within individuals’ capacity and strength. However, in order for da’wah to be efficiently performed, da’wah should be propagated wisely through a systematic approach, and people who are professionally involved in da’wah should have profound knowledge and skills in many fields. Current development shows that scholars in da’wah are moving towards various methodological approaches in order to gain effective ways inviting fellow Muslims and non-Muslims to the message of Islam. This includes having knowledge related to human development, spirituality, psychology, ethnicity and culture, diverse aspects of religious ideas and values, and communication and information technology competencies. Based on this background, Department of Da’wah and Human Development, Academy of Islamic Studies takes an initiative to address recent important issues in relation to Da’wah and Muslim world. It is also to provide a platform for scholars and practitioners to identify any challenges faced in disseminating da'wah. The seminar will discuss around areas of da'wah specialisation, the need for da'wah in the era of globalisation; institutions and sharing of experiences in the field of da'wah; contributions and achievements of prominent Muslim scholars; communications skills and other methods of da’wah.

The manuscript is the work of the previous community that symbolizes their life style with reflected their deep interest in science with influented themselves to engage in writing and producing the manuscript with has became the main reference in the present time as a guideline in building a successful society.

The research word in manuscript has started to have awareness among the academician to study it scientifically. Indeed, the research done which is not depend by theory alone instead it is by looking at it application in the society. Hence, the research work gives a high value towards the development and value added in the society.

The department of Quran and Hadith is inisiating to organize the international seminar on Islamic manuscript to its significance to expose the research work with has done along with the current and on going study by the academian fellows specifically in Islamic studies to be presented and discuss among academician. It is hope that through this presentation and the new research findings will be find with it is beneficiated for all of us for the betterment of the ummah.

The conference also aims to explore current and latest information on knowledge, theories and techniques, in relevant translation field in order to upgrade translation quality as a whole. This 14th International Translation Conference will be held in Penang, Malaysia on the 27 - 29 August 2013. Chicago-Style Citation Quick GuideThe Chicago Manual of Style presents two basic documentation systems: (1) notes and bibliography

and (2) author-date. Choosing between the two often depends on subject matter and the nature of

sources cited, as each system is favored by different groups of scholars.

The notes and bibliography style is preferred by many in the humanities, including those in literature,

history, and the arts. This style presents bibliographic information in notes and, often, a bibliography.

It accommodates a variety of sources, including esoteric ones less appropriate to the author-date

system.

The author-date system has long been used by those in the physical, natural, and social sciences. In

this system, sources are briefly cited in the text, usually in parentheses, by author’s last name and

date of publication. The short citations are amplified in a list of references, where full bibliographic

information is provided.

Aside from the use of notes versus parenthetical references in the text, the two systems share a

Professor Jemina Napier

From 1 February 2013, Jemina Napier will be Professor and Chair of Intercultural Communication in the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland. She is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Linguistics at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia and an Honorary Research Associate in the Department of South African Sign Language at the University of Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. Her research focuses primarily on interpreter-mediated communication; and scholarship of teaching, especially translation and interpreting pedagogy. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field of translation and interpreting and currently coordinates the suite of postgraduate translation and interpreting programs at Macquarie and is Director of the Department of Linguistics’ Centre for Translation & Interpreting Research. Her research interests/ expertise focuses around three strands: (1) language and communication in the context of interpreter-mediated communication – primarily with signed language interpreters and the Deaf community. Adopting sociolinguistic, discourse analytic and sociological explorations of signed language interpretation in context (particularly education, legal and medical) to inform the wider field of interpreting studies and applied linguistics; (2) how deaf adults actually use signed language to communicate in their lives and the challenges this poses for signed language interpreters; and (3) translation and interpreting pedagogy, using action research to explore aspects of distance education, blended learning, curriculum innovation and discourse-based teaching practices. She has

taught, researched and published in all of these areas. She has a wealth of experience in managing research projects, supervising PhD students, and attracting research funding. She is particularly interested in working with other applied linguists and interpreting studies scholars to explore language, context and culture in various professional contexts with a view to informing the policy, pedagogy, and practice of language professionals.

Dr. Jorge Diaz-Cintas

Jorge Díaz Cintas is a Senior Lecturer in Translation at Imperial College London. He is the author of numerous articles and books on audiovisual translation, including Audiovisual Translation: Subtitling (with Aline Remael, 2007), Media for All (co-edited, 2007), The Didactics of Audiovisual Translation (edited, 2008), Audiovisual Translation: Language Transfer on Screen (co-edited, 2009), New Trends in Audiovisual Translation (edited, 2009) and New Insights into Audiovisual Translation and Media Accessibility (co-edited, 2010). He was the president of the European Association for Studies in Screen Translation since 2002 until 2010 as is now one of its directors. He also works as a freelance translator and interpreter and since 2010 has been the Chief Editor of the Peter Lang series New Trends in Translation Studies. He is a member of the international research group TransMedia.

Professor Emeritus Muhammad Hj Salleh

Muhammad Haji Salleh, Ph.D. is known in Malaysia and abroad as a poet, critic, editor and translator in Malay and English. He has published twelve collections of poetry and thirty-odd books of criticism, translation, and anthologies. Among his major poetry collections in Malay are Perjalanan Si Tenggang II, Sajak-sajak Sejarah Melayu, Salju Shibuya, Meraih Ruang, Setitik Darah di Bilik Bundar ; while in English, they include Time and Its People, Beyond the Archipelago and Rowing Down Two Rivers. Among his critical works are Romance and Laughter in the Archipelago, Menyeberang Sejarah, Yang Empunya Ceritera: The Mind of the Malay Author, An Introduction to Modern Malaysian Literature and Jatuh ke Rumput, Gilang. His most recent project was the translation of

Hikayat Hang Tuah into English, The Epic of Hang Tuah (2008).

In all he has written and edited more than 50 books in Malay and English, of poetry, translation and literary criticism/theory. These are published in Malaysia, Indonesia, Europe, Australia and the U.S.

Muhammad is a National Laureate of Malaysia.

THE 14TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TRANSLATION, 201327-29 AUGUST 2013


The International Conference on Translation (PPA) is a biennial conference, which was first held in 1984 through the initiatives of the Malaysian Translators Association (MTA) and the Institute of Language and Literature (DBP), with the awareness that translation is crucial in knowledge transfer. Translation is a prime knowledge communication medium to develop one’s country, particularly in this borderless world. Therefore the aims of organizing this international conference are to nurture exchanging of ideas, knowledge and experience, and, simultaneously to encourage cooperation between scholars, language experts, translators, writers, publishers, editors, educators and students internationally. The conference also aims to explore current and latest information on knowledge, theories and techniques, in relevant translation field in order to upgrade translation quality as a whole. This 14th International Translation Conference will be held in Penang, Malaysia on the 27 - 29 August 2013. Universiti Sains Malaysia has been chosen to be the host this time, together with the following bodies as co-organizers: Malaysian Translators Association (MTA), Malaysian Institute of Translation and Books (ITBM), the Institute of Language and Literature (DBP), under the patronage of the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Education, Malaysia.

Jeremy Munday is Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Leeds. His research interests include applied translation theory, Spanish and Latin American literature in translation, descriptive translation studies, discourse analysis (particularly applied to the translation of literary and political writing) and the use of corpus-based tools. He is author of Introducing Translation Studies (Routledge, 3rd edition 2012), Style and Ideology in Translation (Routledge 2008), Evaluation in Translation: Critical points in translator decision-making (Routledge, 2012) and, with co-author Basil Hatim, of Translation: An advanced resource book (Routledge, 2004). Franz Pöchhacker is Associate Professor of Interpreting Studies in the Center for Translation Studies at the University of Vienna. He was trained as a conference interpreter at the University of Vienna and the Monterey Institute of International Studies and has done freelance work as a conference and media interpreter since the late 1980s. He has conducted research on simultaneous conference interpreting as well as media interpreting and community-based interpreting in healthcare and asylum settings and published on general issues of interpreting studies as a discipline. His textbook on interpreting research, Introducing Interpreting Studies, has been translated into several languages, and he is co-editor, with Miriam Shlesinger, of The Interpreting Studies Reader and of the journal Interpreting.
