“It is a terrible waste of time and brain to a student as his physical is in class, however; his mind is somewhere else”

“ Đó là sự lãng phí thời giờ và chất xám khủng khiếp, khi thân thể học sinh ngồi ở trong lớp, tuy nhiên; trí óc thì lại để một nơi khác”

“We concern with how much our students grasped today, but totally forgot to ask ourselves how much fun our students should have had while they were learning in class”.

“Chúng ta quan tâm hôm nay học sinh tiếp thu được nhiều không, nhưng chúng ta đã hoàn toàn quên hỏi chúng ta rằng học sinh học trong lớp học có vui không”.

“From my perspective, a student going to school without fun is coerced”.

“Cái nhìn của tôi, một học sinh học mà không vui là học với sự gượng ép”.

It is called … Whole Brain Teaching

1. Energetic, fun and practical.2. Students are oriented, driven and centered .3. Highly teacher-students participated and both have fun.4. Physical brain based education focused: lesson

development that engages students in basics of senses: seeing, hearing, speaking, thinking, feeling and plus doing it.

5. Uses laughter and motivation as vehicles for effectively delivering training content to students.

6. Teacher’s primary functions and goals are to transfer his knowledge, others are secondary.

7. Teacher’s perspectives level is lower to share the same difficulties with students.

8. Recognized: - Students learn the most when they are having fun and laughter. - Students learn the most when they are in the most comfortable and daily casual situations.

9. If classroom instruction entertainingly engages, there isn't any mental real estate left over for challenging behavior.

10. If you make your rules fun to follow, students will be more likely to follow your rules. If you make rules intimidated, students will likely be challenging even more.

Let’s sum up what we have had so far .. 1. Complaints 2. an “Ideal” Class 3. Have it In theory, a roadmap 4. How to put it into practice ?

We are getting closer and closer the “ideal” class.

We know it in theory, have a roadmap, but how to put it in practice? how to get there, together we take time to figure it out…. then

– 1– 2– 3

We have complaints, an “ideal” class, the theory, a roadmap and finally techniques.

Let’s try to remember them all !

1. Wake-up Calls 2. Score Board 3. Hands and eyes 4. No left-out Students 5. Teach – OK 6. Micro Lectures

1. Wake-Up Calls

“Class” -------- “Yes” “Class, Class, Class” ……Yes, Yes, Yes “Class, Class, Class, UUH” …..“Yes, Yes, Yes, UUH”

Student conforming to teacher tone.

2. Score Board.

• We are in a rewarding and punishment systems of society.

• Rewards are to motivate and encourage us repeat the same behaviors. Punishments are to prevent and eliminate the same bad behaviors from it happening again.

• By nature we are also innate with “competiveness”

• Each credit – “You say what” – “Oh! Yes! ”• Each debit – “You say what” – “Oh, No!”

Page 19: Seminar WBT of America By Dean Nguyen

3. Hands and Eyes

What if “wake up calls” failed… • Students pound their hands on table or their

laps shouting “yes…”.• Then, their hands are rested on table and

their eyes are looking straight at the teacher.• Whole class awaits for…Teacher Lecture !

Page 20: Seminar WBT of America By Dean Nguyen

It is time to relax and watch movie again to check on what

techniques we have learned so far.

• Sixth Grade with Critical Thinking

Page 21: Seminar WBT of America By Dean Nguyen

4. No Left-Out Students(Best of the Best Techniques)

• The name is already implied it.• Here how it works…..– Ask students time…– Ask class for a choice : Review or Teach

on?– “ I am going to “REVIEW ON WHAT I

HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT WBT …”– For 5-6 minutes. When done, I will call one

of you to repeat or/ what I have just been said.

Page 22: Seminar WBT of America By Dean Nguyen

5. “Teach” … “OK”

• Teach – Ok

• Teach – Ok Switch – Ok

6. Micro Lecture

• Lecture is divided in small chunks of lectures.

• Check and re-check students for their grasps during a 20-25 minute lecture

• Students repeat or possibly expand on whatever teacher has recently been said.

Page 24: Seminar WBT of America By Dean Nguyen

7. A Hero’s Applause

• Look up for a role model • Motivate class• Make a difference• Make a good example• Get students refreshed and alerted.

Page 25: Seminar WBT of America By Dean Nguyen

8. Take Breaths1. Lecture seems endless and you want a break for students 2. As a punishment tool as to when students get sluggish or have signs

of not being co-operated.3. To start the techniques: Let’s play one of your childhood games -

who is able to hold breath longest?4. End Results: Have students blood circulated getting them alerted

• “Class” ------“Yes”. • “Ready?” ------- “Ready!”.

• “Slowly Raise your hand up”

• 1. “In and slowly raise your hand up” • “OUT. Slowly put your hand down”

• 2. “IN and slowly raise your hand up” • “OUT. Slowly put your hand down”

• 3. “IN and slowly raise your hand up”

• “ To see who can hold longest”• “IN and HOLD it”• “ HOLD it … HOLD it … Keep your hand up….”

9. Memory Impression

1. “Các Em. 2. Hôm nay, Thầy muốn áp dụng một phương pháp “học

vui vui học” trong lớp. 3. Nếu các Em muốn, la to “MUỐN” . 4. “MUỐN KHÔNG?” . (Hoc trò la to, nếu không đủ to. Thầy lập lại “ MUỐN KHÔNG?” ) 5. Đó là phương pháp, Whole Brain Teachers Of America. 6. Do Dean Nguyen, Viet Kieu Mỹ đã trình bày với Thầy ở

trương L N H. 7. Bây giò Thầy trình bày lại với các Em…

“What do you say about English?” “I love English very much, very much AND VERY MUCH!” (Or other subjects)

“What would you do when you get home?” “When I get home, I will review today’s learning and do my homework”

11. Mirror – Mimic Gestures( advanced level)

There are three kinds of gestures: -- casual: these are hand motions that come

naturally while speaking -- graphic: match your gestures to exactly

what you are saying. -- memory: these gestures are linked to core

concepts and/or state standards.

Every memory gesture should be unique.

Four brain activities are involved, seeing (motor cortex), speaking (Broca’s area), hearing (auditory cortex) and expressing by doing (motor cortex).

Final Words

1. Is WBT simple ? Rookie – Associate - Skilled level .

2. Why FREE ? - I am indebted to myself for

doing something meaningful to my life.

- When I do something that benefit for someone. Then, I myself feel transcended into the above all.

- I want to live up to the fullest of my life. To see if I can unfold my hidden capabilities in me.

“ It is ashamed for a teacher knowing that some students are being bored or are not following, however; he pretends nothing is bothering him and he keeps on lecturing.”
