** SEMINAR **

Solution Characterisation of Macromolecules.

The characterisation of polymers in solution for molecular weight, size, branching andviscosity is a key element in both research and quality control. Being able to differentiatebetween performance differences due to a change in polymer structure from a differencescaused by a change in molecular weight can shorten development times significantly or helpidentify supplier issues more easily . This seminar, delivered by two experiences scientists, will cover the fundamentals of these measurements and illustrate them with applicationexamples. The focus will be on light scattering and on-line viscometry techniques and theiruse in conjunction with gel permeation chromatography (GPC or SEC).

Gel Permeation Chromatography/Size Exclusion Chromatography (GPC/SEC) is thetechnique of choice for rapid and reliable characterization of molecular weight and molecularstructure for all types of macromolecules. And In the last 20 years there has been a sea-change in the way GPC has been used in polymer and biologics analysis.

Topics covered: Molecular weight , Molecular size, Intrinsic viscosity, Polymer structure,Polymer branching, Conjugate analysis of proteins, Light scattering, Gel permeationchromatography (GPC/SEC) following the agenda below:

What will I learn ?

The seminar will contain useful, educational and informative details on the determination ofmolecular weight and distribution, intrinsic viscosity, molecular size and branchingmeasurement for polymers, polysaccharides and biomolecules. Those attending will gain aclear understanding of how molecular weight and intrinsic viscosity can be measured andtheir relevance to polymer structure. Attendees will learn how structural information forpolymers is calculated from GPC /SEC data and how it can be used to compare materials. The determination of protein oligomeric state and extent of conjugation will also be coverusing application examples.

Who should attend ?

Polymer/Protein scientists and managers of polymer analytical laboratories, formulationscientists and anybody working with polymer and protein solutions. It will also benefit thosealready working with light scattering and GPC/SEC looking to get more useful data fromeach analysis.

About the speakers :

Bassem Sabagh

Dr Bassem Sabagh joined Malvern Instruments in February 2008 as an ApplicationSpecialist and in 2010, became the Product Technical Specialist for the GPC/SEC systems, focussing on synthetic polymer applications, providing training and support for current andpotential customers. Since 2013, Bassem has lead the Separations specialists team in theUK whilst still providing product technical support in Europe, Middle East and Asia

John Stenson

Dr John Stenson joined the Malvern Instruments team in 2012 as a specialist in advancedSEC technologies for the characterization of proteins and other biologics. John has over 9years research experience in bio-process engineering.
