Abstract
As part of a lecture series on how Project Management and Product Development are carried out in the automotive industry, this lecture provides an overview of testing related to automotive engines – as they are typically carried out in by the major car companies using a structured product development process – right from the start (prototype phase) to the end (start of production and the first 90 days of production) of a project. The overview looks at the purpose of testing, what is being tested, how things are tested, how many tests; and when and where tests are carried out. The aspects and merits of “virtual testing” (i.e. using Computer Aided Engineering tools like, for example, Finite Element Analysis) versus physical testing will also be covered. Getting planning, tools and execution right, in product development, is essential in order to deal with the never ending demand for lower cost and shorter lead-times.The objective of the lecture is to provide an overview of the most important aspects to consider when testing components, sub-systems and systems; in the context of how testing is done in industry and the many constraints but also opportunities that exist when dealing with the testing aspect of product development.
