Seminar #38 is in the Bag Tom Stephens
Chair, Photography Weekend Organizing Committee
Latow’s latest Seminar in a long-running series is now history. Attendance was 168 for Saturday, almost the
best since GTCCC started a competing event four years
ago, second only to last year’s Seminar with David
duChemin. Many who attended are avid followers of our
speaker Denise Ippolito, and they came from as far as
Victoria, BC, Detroit, Montreal, and New York City. Now,
that’s drawing power! GTCCC Clubs were well represented, especially by Mississauga (14 attending).
Curiously, there were more people from the Oshawa Club
than the Oakville Club (go figure!).
On Sunday, many of these same people – a total of 198 - -
returned for one or both of Denise’s “how-to” sessions.
These “Sunday shorts” were held in the Lakeshore Room for the first time, using the AGB’s large new screen. While
this room accommodates many more people than our
Studio, there was a bit more ambient light than is ideal
for projections. We have asked the AGB to obtain opaque
screens to install over the doors for such daytime
occasions.
A record amount -- $690 – was raised for Camelot Centre through the sale of draw tickets for the
print donated by Denise and framed by Don Corby. Gary Beaudoin had the winning ticket, which
was drawn by Denise.
The AV Festival delivered on its promise of an
entertaining evening with nine shows of different
styles and subject matter. The 151 people in
attendance were very appreciative of the diversity and quality of the presentations offered.
Many organizations and individuals were instrumental
to the success of the Weekend. The AGB, PhotoLife,
and CAPA provided us with good publicity, while door
prizes were donated by Amplis, Art etc at the AGB, Bell
Arte, Burlington Camera, Corby’s Custom Framing, Duncan and Wright foto source, Macphun, On 1,
PhotoEd, PhotoNews, and PhotoDex. The helpful front-

line staff of the AGB were instrumental with room setups and
changeover. AGB President and CEO Robert Steven welcomed the
attendees on Saturday and introduced Denise.
As I noted in my closing remarks on the Saturday afternoon, it takes a
village to put on a photography weekend. In this case, the ‘village’ was the large number of Latow
members who helped out during
the Weekend. Organizing
Committee members deserve
special mention for working
throughout the year: Ort Baldauf,
Gary Beaudoin, Debbie Forbes, Frank Myers, and Paul Sparrow.
And Atchuta Alapati provided
essential backup for the website and e-commerce. Bill
Warren deserves special recognition and thanks for
inaugurating this seminar series 38 years ago and organizing
it for many years. Bill, we’re sorry you could not make it out this year. Thank you, everyone!

Members' News Several Latow members were recognized for their volunteer work at a reception held by the
AGB on April 25. They are: Atchuta Alapati (500 hours), Bill Browning (2000 hr), Chuck
Burdick (500 hr), Jim Hamilton (Volunteer of the year), Keith Marshall (1000 hr), Dennis
Martin (500 hr), Frank Myers (1000 hr), Peter Schulze (1000 hr), Tom Stephens (Long
Term Service Award), and Virginia Stranaghan (1500 hr).
Atchuta Alapati, John Pingree, David Low, Rolly Astrom and Frank Myers were
successful selling images in the recent Dundas Valley School of Art Auction. This annual auction
is a major art event in the area, with approximately 1,400 works of art on offer.
The 25th annual Artists in the Country Art Show and Sale takes place at Corby Custom Framing
on June 3 and 4. Glen Jones, Fred Oliver, Dennis Martin, Tim Story, Peter Young and
Don Corby, along with 10 other artists, some Fine Arts Guild members, will be showing/selling their work. It's a free, rain or shine event and details are found on the Artists in the Country
website.
Weather? What weather? No problem! Even rain, perhaps sleet and snow cannot stop passionate photographers. Here are a couple of images from Jim Hamilton and Ort Baldauf from the rained out Hamilton Cemetery outing.

New Exposures: May 9 Don Munro
For New Exposures on May 9, we encourage you to bring a pair of images; the first as seen
earlier in the year and the second with the changes you have made since. If you don't have a
before/after pair, bring a new one not previously shared, preferably unaltered so that we can all
benefit from the collective knowledge of the group.
Tim and Don will once again moderate a constructive group critique of projected images. At this
meeting we welcome prints for review as well. Everyone in attendance is invited to take part in
our informal, light-hearted discussion.
At this time, we would like to thank everyone who contributed to this season, either by offering
photos for comment, or by adding to the discussion.
Photography After Dark: May 2 Ariel Estulin With the rapid advance of digital camera
technology, today’s cameras are capable of
producing photographs that were not possible
even just a few years ago. This lecture is designed to show you how to get started with
taking pictures of the night sky and stars.
Topics will include:
gear requirements
planning your shoot
camera settings finding focus and getting sharp images
calculating exposure
shooting the milky way
shooting star trails
light painting techniques
post-production techniques with live
examples in Lightroom

Tuesday, May 30 Photo Art: Impressionism
4
Photo Art: May 30 Joh. Friedrich
Hi Photo Art enthusiasts. On May 30 I will once again make a presentation about one of the
traditional forms of art expression. Impressionism and photography began and evolved at
about the same time: 1860 and beyond. Much of what impressionists did has been done by
photographers. That will be the topic of my presentation.
When I started the Photo Art Program many years ago, Impressionism was the first
presentation I did. It will also be my last. Art has evolved into many new genres. Latow is well
on the way getting into these. I know you will evolve with these new genres. So give me the
pleasure of making my last hurrah a pleasant one for all of us. See you on the 30th of May, at
7:30 pm.
Shooting Moving Subjects: May 11
Tom Stephens
This Thursday evening is another in the Why & How Series --where we learn and share, in this
case, about capturing motion. Yes, blur can be good! But so can frozen action be fascinating; in
both cases, this is not what the naked eyes sees. Bring some images showing your use of
panning, freeze-frame, burst mode, long exposures, time lapse and other techniques for portraying moving subjects. Bringing stuff? Please RSVP to Tom to help me plan the evening.
Digital Group: Apr. 18 Paul Sparrow
Bring an Image: This month will be our annual “Bring an Image” night. You bring images
you’ve worked on and show the group how you created them. Show the group what special
techniques you used and enlighten us on the procedures you've developed to bring your
creations to life.
The idea is to reveal not only how
you did it photographically but how
you used software like Photoshop/
Lightroom or other programs and/
or plugins to create the final result.
Please bring “layered” composite versions of your files
if you can to show us behind the
scenes into the making of your
images and the before and after
versions.
Studio Group: May 23 Andrzej Pradzynski
The Studio Group is meeting on May 23 to study expressing movement in portraiture
photography. During this session, coordinated by NJ and Daniel, we will explore using
continuous lighting and strobes to express dynamics of movement in studio portrait
photography.
Bring your camera with you for the chance to capture some interesting shots from the
workshop. Our model for the session is Elya (MM # 3977007). Hope we all are going to have a
fun night.

TIPS & TRICKS
Learn to use the histogram:
Proper exposure is the critical
starting point for great images.
Take a few minutes to learn how the histogram records light values in the image.
If you aren’t sure where to get this information,
ask a more experienced photographer or search
the topic on YouTube to find helpful videos.

Corby Custom Framing
We provide quality framing with a lightning-fast turnaround and at very competitive pricing.
We only use conservation quality mat boards. Lower costing paper and acid free mat boards will introduce harmful gases into the frame package that eventually deteriorate your work.
We only use wood moulding as well. Lower cost plastic and MDF mouldings have no longevity.
We specialize in large orders for artists preparing for exhibitions. We'll work with the artist to achieve the best pricing and delivery possible.
