Multimedia is the field concerned with the computer controlled integration of text,

graphics, drawings, still and moving images (Video), animation, audio, and any other

media where every type of information can be represented, stored, transmitted and

processed digitally.

DEFINITION OF MULTIMEDIA

Multimedia has been used in many aspects in our lives, for example in the field of

business, entertainment and the sciences. “Multimedia” comes from the word “multi”

and “media”. “Multi” means various. “Media” refers to any hardware or software used

for communicating.

The usage of text, audio, graphic, video and animation are all involved in describing

media. So, multimedia is the presentation of information by using a combination of text,

audio, graphic, video and animation.

CURRENT DEFINITION OF MULTIMEDIA IN ICT

In the field of Information and Communication Technology, multimedia means more

than the use of the various media. A computer user interacts with the computer to

perform tasks such as finding information or play games to develop a skill.

There are five main elements in a complete multimedia system.

Text, Graphic, Audio, Video, Animation

In business, multimedia applications are used in advertising products. In art, artists use

multimedia elements by combining drawing and animation.

In medicine, doctors can practice or be trained in performing high-risk surgery by using

virtual surgery.

In engineering, Computer-Aided Design or CAD is used. By using this application,

engineers can view the design from many aspects and improve on it before production.

Need of multimedia

Multimedia is everywhere whether you are at a railway station looking at the schedule

screens or watching your Television or using your mobile. It has changed everything

from manufacturing to the advertising and education to healthcare industry. It has

revolutionized everything everywhere not only in India but also the entire world.

1. Advertising Advertising has changed a lot over the past couple of decades, and this is mainly due to

the increased use of the internet in business. Multimedia plays a great and a vital role in

the field of advertising. As whatever it is whether print or electronic advertisement, they

first are prepared on the computer by using professionals' software's and then it is

brought in front of the target audiences. Some of different types of advertising are:

• Print advertising

• Radio (audio) advertising

• Television (video) advertising

• Digital advertising o Display Ads o Remarketing o Video o Social o Search

• Mobile advertising

2. Education

In the area of education too, the multimedia has a great importance. Talking

particularly about the schools, their usage has a significant role to play for

children also. It is broadly used in the field of education and training. We used audio for imparting education even in traditional method, where charts,

models etc. were used.

Nowadays the classroom need is not limited to that traditional method rather

it needs audio and visual media. With the use of multimedia everything can

be integrated into one system. As an education aid the PC contains a high-

quality display with mic option. This all has promoted the development of a

wide range of computer-based training.

3. Mass Media

It is used in the field of mass media i.e. journalism, in various magazines and

newspapers that are published periodically. The use of multimedia plays a

vital role in a publishing house as there are many works of newspaper designing and other stuff also.

Nowadays it's not only the text that we can see in the newspaper, but we can

also see photographs in newspaper, this not only makes newspaper a perfect example but will also explain the worthiness of hypermedia. 4. Gaming

Industry One of the most exciting applications of multimedia is games. Nowadays the live

internet is used to play gaming with multiple players has become popular.

In fact, the first application of multimedia system was in the field of

entertainment and that too in the video game industry. The integrated audio

and video effects make various types of games more entertaining.

5. Science and Technology

Multimedia had a wide application in the field of science and technology. It

is capable of transferring audio, sending message and formatted multimedia

documents. At the same time that it also helps in live interaction through

audio messages and it is only possible with the hypermedia. It reduces the

time and cost can be arranged at any moment even in emergencies.

At the same time, it is useful for surgeons as they can use images created

from imaging scans of human body to practice complicated procedures such as brain removal and reconstructive surgery. The plans can be made in a

better way to reduce the costs and complications.

6. Pre-Production Pre-Production comprises of everything you do before you start recording of audio or

video. This phase of your project is extremely important. Everything you do in

preproduction will save time and aggravation during production and post-production.

The techniques shown will include: how to design storyboards, including how to show

correct camera angles for the scene, writing your story, and how to use video transitions

can be done with the help of multimedia.

7. Post Production It is the final step of production involves editing scenes, adding various transition

effects, addition of voice to characters, background score, dubbing and much more can

be done using multimedia technologies.

8. Fine Arts In fine arts, there are multimedia artists, who blend techniques using different media

that in some way incorporates interaction with the viewer. One of the famous artist is

Peter Greenaway who is blending cinema with opera with the help of all sorts of digital

media.

9. Engineering Software engineers often use multimedia in computer simulations for anything such as

military or industrial training. It is also used for software interfaces which are done as

collaboration between creative professionals and software engineers.

10. Research In the area of mathematical and scientific research, multimedia is primarily used for

modeling and simulation. For example, looking at a molecular model by a scientist of a

particular substance and manipulate it to arrive at a new substance.

Areas of use/multimedia

ENTERTAINMENT

The entertainment industry has used this technology the most to create real life like

games. Several developers have used graphics, sound, animation of multimedia to

create variety of games. The special technologies such as virtual reality have

made this game just like experiences of real life. Our example is flight simulator which

creates a real-life imaging.

Many multimedia games are now available on computers. The children can enjoy these

experiences, for example, they can drive cars of different variety, fly aircraft play any

musical instrument, play golf etc.

EDUTAINMENT

Edutainment is nothing but educational entertainment. Many computer games with

focus on education are now available. A simple example, in this case is an educational

game which plays various rhymes for little kids. In addition to playing rhymes, the child

can paint the pictures, increase reduce size of various objects etc. Similarly many other

edutainment packages which provide a lot of detailed information to kids are available.

Microsoft has produced many such CD- based multimedia such as Sierra, Knowledge

Adventure etc. which in addition to play provide some sort of learning component. The

latest in this series is a package which teaches about the computer using games playing.

BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS

Multimedia is a very powerful tool for enhancing the quality of business

communications. The business communications such as employee related

communications, product promotions, customer information and reports for investors

can be presented in multimedia form. All these business communications are required

to be structured such that a formal level of content structure exists in the

communication.

Other common business application involving multimedia requires access to database

of multimedia information about a company. The multimedia technology of today can

easily support this application as natural language inquiry systems do exist for making

queries.

KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

This kind of application involves transmission of a piece of information with the

maximum impact, that is, the transfer of information in such a fashion that it facilitates

the retention. This application is meant for academia and business both.

In academies, the knowledge transfer is used as the building block, whereas, in business

it is the effective transfer of information which might be essential for the survival of a

business. Multimedia based teaching is gaining momentum and will become a powerful

teaching aid in the near future. Multimedia is one of the best ways to provide short term

training to the workers in a business house. It gives lot of flexibility in providing

training. PUBLIC ACCESS

Public Access is an area of application where many multimedia applications will soon

be available. One such application may be the tourist information system, where a

person who wants to go for a sightseeing trip may have the glimpse of places he has

selected for visiting. Using Multimedia Many such applications may he developed

providing a repository of information. For example, for very simple public information,

that is, the Railway Time table inquiry, a multimedia based system may not only display

the trains and time but also the route map of the destination from the source you have

desired.

Identifying multimedia elements text, Images, Sound,

Animation and video

If we break the word multimedia into its component parts, we get multi -meaning

more than one, and media-meaning form of communication. Those types of media

include:

Let's looks at each of these components in more detail.

1. Text

Whether or not they have used a computer, most people are familiar with text. Text is

the basis for word processing programs and is still the fundamental information used

in many multimedia programs.

In fact, many multimedia applications are based on the conversion of a book to a

computerized form. This conversion gives the user immediate access to the text and lets

him or her display pop-up windows, which give definitions of certain words.

Multimedia applications also enable the user to instantly display information related to

a certain topic that is being viewed. Most powerfully, the computerized form of a book

allows the user to look up information quickly (without referring to the index or table

of contents).

2. Audio Sound

The integration of audio sound into a multimedia application can provide the user with

information not possible through any other method of communication .Some types of

information can't be conveyed effectively without using sound. It is nearly impossible,

for example, to provide an accurate textual description of the bear of a heart or the sound

of the ocean.

3. Static Graphics images

When you imagine graphics images you probably think of "still" images-that is, images

such as those in a photograph or drawing. There is no movement in these types of

picture. Static graphics images are an important part of multimedia because humans are

visually oriented. As the old Chinese proverb goes,"A picture is worth a thousand

words."Windows is also a visual environment. This makes displaying graphics images

easier than it would be in a DOS-based environment.

4. Animation

Animation refers to moving graphics images. The movement of somebody giving CPR

makes it much easier to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation, rather than just viewing a

static picture. Just as a static graphics image is a powerful form of communication, such

is the case with animation. Animation is especially useful for illustrating concepts that

involve movement.

5. Full-Motion Video

Full-motion video, such as the images portrayed in a television, can add even more to a

multimedia application. Although full-motion video may sound like an ideal way to add

a powerful message to a multimedia application, it is nowhere near the quality you

would expect after watching television. Full-motion video is still in its beginning stages

on PCs, and it is limited in resolution and size. Even with advanced methods of data

compression, full-motion video can suck up hard disk space faster than waterfalls when

poured out of a bucket.

6. All of the Above

You can see that multimedia is by no means just one of the preceding technologies.

Because of what hardware can and cannot do, it is often a trade-off between a certain

number of static graphics images, audio sound, full-motion video and text. As you may

guess, textual information takes the least amount of space to store.

Multimedia Hardware and Software requirement

MULTIMEDIA HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS

CPU

Central Processing Unit (CPU) is an essential part in any computer. It is considered as the brain of computer, where processing and synchronization of all activities takes place. The efficiency of a computer is judged by the speed of the CPU in processing of

data. For a multimedia computer a Pentium processor is preferred because of higher efficiency.

Monitor

The monitor is used to see the computer output. Generally, it displays 25 rows and 80 columns of text. The text or graphics in a monitor is created as a result of an arrangement

of tiny dots, called pixels. Resolution is the amount of details the monitor can render. Resolution is defined in terms of horizontal and vertical pixel (picture elements) displayed on the screen.

Video Grabbing Card

We need to convert the analog video signal to digital signal for processing in a computer. Normal computer will not be able to do it alone. It requires special equipment called

video grabbing card and software to this conversion process. This card translates the analog signal it receives from conventional sources such as a VCR or a video camera, and converts them into digital format.

Sound Card

Today’s computers are capable of creating the professional multimedia needs. Not only you can use computer to compose your own music, but it can also be used for

recognition of speech and synthesis. It can even read back the entire document for you. But before all this happens, we need to convert the conventional sound signal to computer understandable digital signals. This is done using a special component added to the system called sound card.

CD-Rom CD-ROM is a magnetic disk of 4.7 inches diameter and it can contain data up to 680 Megabytes. It has become a standard by itself basically for its massive storage capacity, faster data transfer rate. To access CD-ROM a very special d1rive is required and it is known as CD-ROM drive.

MULTIMEDIA SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

For the creation of multimedia on the PC there are hundreds of software packages that are available from manufacturers all over the world.

These software packages can cost anything from being absolutely free (normally this software is called freeware or shareware) to anything upwards of £500.

Here is a summary of just a few of these programs.

applications made by Adobe Systems many of which are the industry standard that includes

Adobe Dreamweaver

Although a hybrid WYSIWYG and code-based web design and development application, Dreamweaver’s WYSIWYG mode can hide the HTML code details of

pages from the user, making it possible for non-coders to create web pages and sites, WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) web development software that allows users to create websites without using Html, everything can be done visually.

Adobe Fireworks

A graphics package that allows users to create bitmap and vector graphics editor with features such as: slices, the ability to add hotspots etc.) for rapidly creating website prototypes and application interfaces.

Gimp

Is an alternative to Photoshop and cheaper but not quite as good

Google Sketch up

Sketch Up is a 3D modeling program designed for architects, civil engineers,

filmmakers, game developers, and related professions.

Microsoft FrontPage

As a WYSIWYG editor, FrontPage is designed to hide the details of pages’ HTML code

from the user, making it possible for novices to easily create web pages and sites.

Apple QuickTime

QuickTime is an extensible proprietary framework developed by Apple, capable of

handling various formats of digital video, 3D models, sound,

text, animation, music, panoramic images, and interactivity.

Photoshop Pro

Adobe Photoshop, or simply Photoshop, is a graphics editing program developed and published by Adobe Systems. It is the current market leader for commercial bitmap and image manipulation software, and is the

flagship product of Adobe Systems. It has been described as “an industry standard for graphics professionals”

Microsoft PowerPoint

PowerPoint Presentations are generally made up of slides may contain text, graphics, movies, and other objects, which may be arranged freely on the slide.

Adobe Flash Player

Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash) is a multimedia platform that is popular for

adding animation and interactivity to web pages. Originally acquired by Macromedia, Flash was introduced in 1996, and is currently developed and distributed by Adobe Systems.

Flash is commonly used to create animation, advertisements, and various web page

Flash components, to integrate video into web pages, and more recently, to develop rich Internet applications.

Adobe Shockwave

Adobe Shockwave (formerly Macromedia Shockwave) is multimedia program, first developed by Macromedia, acquired by Adobe Systems in 2005. It allows Adobe Director Applications to be published on the Internet and viewed in a web browser on any computer which has the Shockwave plug-in installed.

Making simple multimedia with power point Text as a

The radio uses a combination of sounds and speech. Newspapers use a combination of text and images. Television combines all these elements with the aim of enhancing communication and understanding. This combination of visual and audio media for the purpose of communicating is referred to as multimedia.

Studies have shown that multimedia presentations, using Microsoft PowerPoint for example, are an effective tool for encouraging retention of information. Educators often make use of presentations to teach students new concepts. In the business environment,

presentations are often used as a sales tool. However, it is essential that multimedia technology is used appropriately to ensure successful outcomes. Let us consider some of the ways of using multimedia in a PowerPoint presentation.

The term clip art refers to pictures or images that can be imported into a document, such as a PowerPoint presentation. Graphics can be used more effectively to deliver a particular message than text alone.

Clip art is available in two different file formats: bitmap or vector graphics. Bitmap file formats describe images, such as scanned photographs, that are made up of a grid of multicolored or black and white pixels. These images are limited in quality by their resolution. Vector file formats describe an image as a series of points, lines, curves and

polygons using geometric modeling. A crisp image is generated which is usually superior in resolution when compared to bitmap graphics. By understanding the difference between file formats, clip art users can select the appropriate image file to achieve the desired result.

When using clip art, it is important to be aware of copyright and usage rights so that an image is used in a legal way. Clip art can be added to a PowerPoint presentation in a number of ways. By receiving advanced level training, the user can learn to use the software in the most effective way.

Using animations

In the context of Microsoft PowerPoint, animations refer to the movement of text boxes,

bullet points or images onto a slide during a slide show. When used sparingly in PowerPoint presentations, animations can effectively add emphasis to a particular point. Users of PowerPoint can choose between using Preset Animation Schemes or Custom Animations. Advanced level PowerPoint training will teach users how to use animation schemes to maximum effect.

Using scanned images

When using scanned images in PowerPoint presentations, it is important to remember that the greater the image size, the longer it takes to load and display the image. Concepts of plain & formatted text

RTF & HTML texts

RTF & HTML

RTF (Rich Text Format) and HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) are two similar

formats because of their use of tags in order to format the documents properly. Despite

being similar to each other, there are a number of distinct differences between the two

formats. The primary difference between RTF and HTML is their use. While HTML is

used for transmitting content across the Internet, RTF was primarily used as a format

for storing typed documents. RTF was developed in the early days of Microsoft Word

but has since been replaced by the DOC and DOCX formats.

Both RTF and HTML have provisions on formatting text and modifying how it looks

with different fonts, sizes, as well as different typefaces like bold and italics. You also

have the ability to include pictures with both; there’s just a minor difference in how they

go about doing this. With RTF, the image you’re including gets embedded into the file.

This increases the file size but ensures that you will always see the image when you

open the file. In comparison, HTML does not have the ability to embed images; what it

will do is store a link to where the image is stored. This keeps the size of HTML files

down, but you run a risk of the image not being there when you open the HTML file.

This was also done to reduce the size of files; since it is common for the same image to

be used by multiple pages, keeping a single copy of the file makes more sense.

There is also a difference between the types of files that you can put into RTF and

HTML files. Starting with images, HTML can load most types including animated

GIFs. In contrast, RTF cannot include animated files, and even still images are limited

to a few formats only. When you paste an image into the RTF file, it will automatically

convert it to the accepted format. When it comes to other media, like audio and video,

this is pretty simple with HTML while absolutely non-existent with RTF.

The differences between HTML and RTF are closely related to what they are meant to

do. HTML is a versatile format for delivering all sorts of content. This is very different

from what RTF is meant to do, which is the storage of typed documents.

1. RTF is used for storing documents while HTML is used for transmitting content

across the Internet.

2. RTF embeds the images into the files while HTML just links to them.

3. HTML supports a lot more image types than RTF.

4. HTML can embed videos and audio while RTF cannot.

Object Linking and Embedding concept

Definition - What does object Linking and Embedding (OLE) mean?

Object linking and embedding (OLE) is a Microsoft technology that facilitates the sharing of application data and objects written in different formats from multiple sources. Linking establishes a connection between two objects, and embedding

facilitates application data insertion.

OLE is used for compound document management, as well as application data transfer via drag-and-drop and clipboard operations.

Techopedia explains Object Linking and Embedding (OLE)

An OLE object may display as an icon. Double clicking the icon opens the associated object application or asks the user to select an application for object editing.

Alternatively, an OLE object may display as actual contents, such as a graph or chart. For example, an external application chart, such as an Excel spreadsheet, may be inserted into a Word application. When the chart is activated in the Word document, the

chart's user interface loads, and the user is able to manipulate the external chart's data inside the Word document.

OLE-supported software applications include:

• Microsoft Windows applications, such as Excel, Word and PowerPoint

• Corel WordPerfect

• Adobe Acrobat

• AutoCAD

OLE has certain disadvantages, as follows:

• Embedded objects increase the host document file size, resulting in potential storage or loading difficulties.

cause small bones in our ears to vibrate. These vibrations then cause nerve impulses to

be sent to the brain where they are interpreted as sound.

Sound and it Attributes – tone, intensity, frequency,

Intensity

Sound has intensity. Intensity refers to the force with which it is perceived, which

depends on the amplitude of the oscillatory movement. Subjectively, we say that a

sound is strong or weak. When we raise the volume of the radio, what we do is increase

the intensity of the sound. The intensity is measured in decibels.

Wavelength

The waveform representation converts the pressure variations of sound waves into a

pictorial graph which is easier to understand. A sound wave is made of areas of high

pressure alternated by an area of low pressure. The high-pressure areas are represented

as the peaks of the graph. The low-pressure areas are depicted in the Valleys. The

physical distance between two consecutive peaks or valleys in a sound wave is referred

to as the Wavelength of the sound wave. It is labeled in the image above.

Frequency/ Pitch of the Sound Waves

Frequency in a sound wave refers to the rate of the vibration of the sound traveling

through the air. This parameter decides whether a sound is perceived as high pitched or

low pitched. In sound, the frequency is also known as Pitch. The frequency of the

vibrating source of sound is calculated in cycles per second.

The SI Unit for Frequency being hertz and its definition being ‘1/T’ where T refers to

the time period of the wave, The time period is the time required for the wave to

complete one cycle. Wavelength and frequency of a sound wave are related

mathematically as:

While stereo is the most commonly used audio system, there are some distinct

standard for most PA systems in concert halls, due to its ability to replicate the physical

Recording Studio," FM radio is broadcast in stereo, and nearly every song recorded

since the early '70s has been recorded and mixed with stereo sound in mind.

Sound channels

6 types of sound channels

Mono (Monaural or monophonic sound reproduction)

Mono has audio in a single channel, which is a

more primitive form of sound reproduction. It is intended to be heard as if it were a

single

channel of sound perceived as coming from one position. From the perspective of

nowadays, it may be considered as outdated since it uses a recording method lacking

of sense of location, but it is already a quite advanced technology when the audio card

just began to appear.

Monaural sound has been replaced by stereo sound in most entertainment applications.

However, it remains the standard for radiotelephone communications, telephone

networks, and audio induction loops for use with hearing aids. A few FM radio stations

particularly talk radio shows; choose to broadcast in mono, as a monaural signal has a

slight advantage in signal strength over a stereophonic signal of the same power.

Stereo is the reproduction of sound using two or more independent audio channels in a

way that creates the impression of sound heard from various directions, as in natural

hearing. Stereo sound is particularly useful in music appreciation, as the audience can

clearly distinguish the direction from which a variety of musical instruments play, thus

making the music more imaginative and feeling personally on the scene. After the

appearing of Sound Blaster Pro, the stereo technology is widely used in lots of following

audio cards. It has become a far-reaching audio standard. Up to now, stereo is still a

technical standard abide by lots of products.

Stereo sound is preferred for listening to music, in theaters, radio stations dedicated to

music, FM broadcasting and Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB).

The basic concept of prospective stereo audio card is that adopting mono when

recording sound, but what is reproducing can be stereo and mono sometimes. The audio

card with this technology has also been popular in the market for some time, but now

has disappeared.

4.0 surround sound

Also called quadraphonic sound, it uses four channels in which speakers are positioned

at the four corners of the listening space, reproducing signals that are (wholly or in part)

independent of one another. It includes four points of articulation: left on the front, right

on the front, left on the back, and right on the back, while the audience is surrounded

by the sound.

It is suggested to add a subwoofer to enhance the playback processing of lowfrequency

signal.

5.1 surround sound is achieved with AC-3 (Dolby Digital) or DTS. DTS uses less

compression but is also less common than Dolby Digital.

These are considered lossless audio, identical to the movie studio’s original.

Most Blue-ray players support 7.1 sounds, as does the PS3. Most DVDs, Blue-ray disks

and games are still produced using only 5.1 audio, but an increasing number of Blue-

ray disks are being released with 7.1 sounds as well.

Analog V/S Digital sound

Analog sound

Sound itself is a continuous wave; it is an analog signal. This means that one cannot

detect the precise moment the pitch changes. Capturing this continuous wave in its

entirety requires an analog recording system; what the microphone receives is exactly

what's written onto the vinyl disk or cassette. Analog is believed to be the true

representation of the sound at the moment it was recorded.

Digital sound

Digital sound is not a recording of the actual sound, but rather a combination of binary

code, the utmost simplest machine language of zeros and ones, representing the sound's

intensity and pitch at precise intervals with relative accuracy. The binary code is

arranged in a specific pattern informing the computer how to recreate the sound itself.

It is not a single wave the way analog sound is, but rather a composite of multiple

segments representing consecutive moments of intensity and pitch. Where an analog

recording is similar to the fluency of film, a digital recording is stop motion

photography.

PC WAV

PC WAV stands for Waveform Audio File Format (also called Audio for Windows at

some point but not anymore). It’s a standard that was developed by Microsoft and IBM

back in 1991.

A lot of people assume that all PC WAV files are uncompressed audio files, but that’s

not exactly true. WAV is actually just a Windows container for audio formats. This

means that a WAV file can contain compressed audio, but it’s rarely used for that.

Most PC WAV files contain uncompressed audio in PCM format. The PC WAV file is

Concept of MIDI

Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI) is a technical protocol that governs the

interaction of digital instruments with computers and with each other. Instead of a direct

musical sound representation, MIDI provides the information on how a musical sound

is made with the help of MIDI commands. The protocol not only provides compactness

but also provides ease in manipulation and modification of notes, along with a flexible

choice of instruments.

Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI)

MIDI contains information about the pitch, velocity, notation and control signals for

different musical parameters such as vibration, volume, etc. It also contains information

for an instrument to start and stop a specific note. This information is used by the

wavetable of the receiving musical device to produce the sound waves. As a result,

MIDI is more concise than similar technologies and is asynchronous. The byte is the

basic unit of communication for the protocol, which uses 8-bit serial

transmission, with one start and one stop bit. Each MIDI command has its own unique

sequence of bytes.

One of the most common applications of MIDI is in sequencers, which allow a computer

to store, modify, record and play MIDI data. Sequencers use the MIDI format for files

because of their smaller size compared to those produced by other popular data formats.

slouch when it comes to the features either. It has almost all the features you’ll need.

There are a lot of effects including things like bass, treble, distortion, noise removal and

more. Along with that Audacity also comes with analysis tools such as beat finder,

silence finder, sound finder, and more.

4. Reaper

Reaper is yet audio editing software that’s incredibly powerful and feature rich while

also being comparatively more affordable than some of the other options on this list.

For starters, Reaper comes with support for multiple tracks, and has a remarkable

Vector and Raster Graphics

The first factors that will help you define whether a certain image is in vector or raster

format is

scalability. Vector images don’t lose their sharpness and clarity, no matter to what

extend or how many times you change their size.

In contrast, raster (or bitmap) images get blurry and pixilated once you examine them

from a close-up. Let’s illustrate it for you, so you can better see the difference. In the

following illustration you will see a raster image which loses quality when enlarged. In

comparison to it, a vector version of the same monster illustrated next to the raster

doesn’t change its quality no matter the size:

Scanners

An image scanner is able to scan and capture text, imagery and objects and then turn

them into a digital image, the most common scanners are flatbeds, this involves the

object or document being placed on a horizontal glass surface whilst a bright light

illuminates the surface and subsequently the object on the scanner is then converted to

a digital image that can be seen and edited via the connected computer.

Digital Cameras

Digital Cameras like scanners are capable of image capture, except a digital camera is

more transportable making them the preferable choice; this is also down to the fact that

a Digital Camera is able to capture images of everyday life compared to the Scanner

which requires invariably a flat document. Digital Cameras capture the image and then

immediately present the image on the camera, the majority of modern cameras allow

you to edit or filter images that have been stored.

Image size is always dimensioned in pixels, for example 6000x4000 pixels, or 24

megapixels.

Data size is dimensioned in bytes, for example, 12 megabytes.

For a 6x4 inch image printed at 300 dpi, the image size is calculated as:

(6 inches × 300 dpi) × (4 inches × 300 dpi) = 1800 × 1200 pixels 1800 ×

1200 pixels is 1800×1200 = 2,160,000 pixels (2 megapixels).

The memory cost for this RGB color image is:

1800 × 1200 × 3 = 6.48 million bytes

The last "× 3" is for 3 bytes of RGB color information per pixel for 24 bit color (3 RGB

values per pixel, one 8-bit byte for each RGB value, which totals 24 bit color).

The compressed JPG file will be smaller (maybe 10% of that size), selected by our

choice for JPG Quality, but the smaller it is, the worse the image quality. The larger it

is, the better the image quality. If uncompressed, it is three bytes per pixel.

Different color modes have different size data values, as shown.

Color depth

Color depth is used to describe the maximum number of colors that are used in the

image. The higher the number of colors then the more realistic the image will appear.

Once again, with bitmap images, the chosen color depth will affect the final file size.

Let's look at how these color models work, although these examples refer to pixels, the

same applies to dots in a printed image.

Monochrome (e.g. Black & White)

This has the lowest storage requirement, because we only need to know whether the

pixel should be on or off, the information for each pixel can be stored in a Bit, or put

another way, we can store the information for eight pixels in one Byte of storage space.

Grayscale (256 shades of Grey)

Because a Byte can be one of 256 values, then each pixel requires one Byte of storage

space.

256 Colors (Palliated)

This format allows each pixel to be one of 256 colors stored in a Color Look up Table

(CLUT), more commonly referred to as the palette. The palette is also saved with the

file so this adds slightly to the file size, but the information for each pixel is stored in

one Byte of storage space.

Note. The GIF format, is a variation of the above, in that it allows you to decide upon

the size of the palette stored with the image, this allows you to reduce the overall file

size, if your image does not use many colors. Generally 256 color formats store the

whole 256 color palette, whether the image uses them or not.

16 Bit Color (High Color)

Though not quite as common now as a few years ago, this format uses two Bytes to

store the information, one Byte for the color and one Byte for the shade of the color.

This gave a total of 65,536 colors (256x256). So each pixel requires two Bytes of

storage space.

24 Bit Color

This format stores the Red, Green and Blue value for each pixel. Each of these can be

one of 256 values, giving a total of 16,777,216 colors (256x256x256). Using 16 million

colors allows for very photorealistic images, but increases the storage space

requirements to three Bytes for each pixel.

32 Bit Color (True Color)

This format uses the same format as above for the Red, Green and Blue colors but also

stores transparency information for each pixel. This allows each pixel to be one of 256

values from fully opaque to fully transparent. Because of the extra transparency

information, the storage space for each pixel now requires four Bytes.

Resolution

The resolution of an image is determined by the number of individually addressable

points that make up the image, whether it is the number of pixels that make up a screen

image, or the number of dots that make up a printed image.

The more dots that are used to create an image, then the more detail the image can

resolve and the sharper it appears when viewed.

When using bitmap graphics, whatever resolution is chosen, information needs to be

stored for each pixel or printer dot. This means the higher the resolution, the more

information needs to be stored for an image of any given size.

This does not apply when using vector graphics, as the decision about resolution, only

needs to be made when the image is printed, or exported as a bitmap.

Various Image File Format BMP, DIB, EPS, PIC and TIFF

format their features and limitations

BMP

(Bit-Map)

Can be recognized by the ".bmp" extension, it was developed by Microsoft Corporation,

and provides a simple, efficient means of storing a wide variety of graphical data. BMP

is the standard MS-Windows raster format (BMP files can be created with Windows'

Paintbrush and used as "wallpaper" for the background when running Windows.)

Transferring an image to the BMP format may result in some color shifts when BMP

files are imported into Windows applications.

BMP-Windows-RGB format supports 1, 4, 8, 24 bits per pixel - not compressed.

DIB

Microsoft has defined a particular representation of color bitmaps of different color

depths, as an aid to exchanging bitmaps between devices and applications with a variety

of internal representations. They called these device-independent bitmaps or DIBs, and

the file format for them is called DIB file format or BMP image file format.

According to Microsoft support [4]

A device-independent bitmap (DIB) is a format used to define device-independent

bitmaps in various color resolutions. The main purpose of DIBs is to allow bitmaps to

be moved from one device to another (hence, the device-independent part of the name).

A DIB is an external format, in contrast to a device-dependent bitmap, which appears

in the system as a bitmap object (created by an application...). A DIB is normally

transported in metafiles (usually using the Stretch DIB its () function), BMP files, and

the Clipboard (CF_DIB data format).

The following sections discuss the data stored in the BMP file or DIB in detail. This is

the standard BMP file format. [4] Some applications create bitmap image files which

are not compliant with the Microsoft documentation. Also, not all fields are used; a

value of 0 will be found in these unused fields.

EPS

(Encapsulated PostScript)

Uses a "EPS" extension and was also created by Adobe Systems. The Encapsulated

PostScript file (EPS) format is supported by most illustration and page layout programs,

and in most cases is the preferred format for these applications. Note that this is also the

only file format that supports transparent whites in Bitmap mode. EPS is a very complex

interpreted language.

PIC

(Picture)

PIC format files are generated and used by PICTOR, PC-Paint and GRASP and is the

standard image file format for the Apple Macintosh.

TIFF

(Tagged-Image files Format)

Can be recognized by the ".TIFF" or ".tiff" extension, was designed to be powerful and

flexible. It stores a very large amount of information about an image, and works well as

an intermediary file format between scanners or paint programs and desktop publishing

programs. One would scan or paint an image, save it as a TIFF file, import it into a

desktop publishing program, and save it as another format. This actually works very

well. The use of TIFF has been limited, however, since it is very complex. TIFF was

developed in 1988 by Aldus Corporation, in cooperation with Microsoft Corporation.

The Tagged Image File Format was primarily designed to become the standard format.

In order to become the standard, the format was designed to handle just about any

possibility. The result of this design provided the flexibility of an infinite number of

possibilities of how a TIFF image can be saved.

As a result, no application at all can claim to support all TIFF variations. Some

professional applications support many TIFF variations, but there will always be an

obscure variation that will cause a problem for some application.

The TIFF format uses 6 different encoding routines. The TIFF format supports LZW

method compression for image types. (This is the same compression used by the GIF

format for indexed color) TIP: If an application is having a problem reading compressed

TIFF files, try re-saving the file without compression.

The purpose of this study is to find out the impact of using multimedia on students’ academic

achievement in the College of Education at King Saud University. This study’s effort is to answer the

following questions:

What is the impact of using multimedia on students’ academic achievement in the

“computer & its use in education” curriculum?

Are there any statistically-significant differences between the average marks of the

experimental group & that of the control group in the pre & post measurements of

students’ academic achievement in the school of Education?

To this end, an experiment of two equivalent groups was designed, one of the groups is

experimental & the other is control; each of them consists of 20 female students. The

lecture was given to the first group using a computer presentation program which uses

multimedia treated as an experimental group, while the second group was given the

same lecture using the traditional method which uses the dialog & discussion technique

treated as a control group. Both groups were subjected to pre & post tests in the subject

tackled by the lecture. The analysis result of the pre test showed no statistically-

significant differences, which in turn proves the equivalence of the two groups.

Meanwhile, the analysis result of the post test showed the following: There are

statistically-significant differences between the experimental group and the control

group at a significance level of 0.05 for the interest of the experimental group.

Both groups were subjected to pre & post tests in the subject tackled by the lecture. The

analysis result of the pre test showed no statistically-significant differences, which in

the experimental group and the control group at a significance level of 0.05 for the

interest of the experimental group.

Basics of Video Analog and Digital Video

Analog video

Analog video is a video signal transferred by an analog signal. When combined in to

one channel, it is called composite video as is the case, among others with NTSC, PAL

and SECAM.

Analog video may be carried in separate channels, as in two channel S - Video (YC)

and multi - channel component video formats.

Analog video is used in both consumer and professional television production

applications. However, digital video signal formats with higher quality have been

adopted, including serial digital interface (SDI), Fire wire (IEEE 1394), Digital Visual

Interface (DVI) and High - Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI).

Most TV is still sent and received as an analog signal. Once the electrical signal is

received, we may assume that brightness is at least a monotonic function of voltage, if

not necessarily linear, because of gamma correction.

An analog signal f(t) samples a time - varying image. So - called progressive scanning

traces through a complete picture (a frame) row - wise for each time interval. A high -

resolution computer monitor typically uses a time interval of 1/72 second.

In TV and in some monitors and multimedia standards, another system, interlaced

scanning, is used. Here, the odd - numbered lines are traced first, then the even -

numbered lines. This results in "odd" and "even" fields — two fields make up one frame.

In fact, the odd lines (starting from 1) end up at the middle of a line at the end of the

odd field, and the even scan starts at a half - way point. The following figure shows the

scheme used. First the solid (odd) lines are traced— P to Q, then R to S, and so on,

ending at T — then the even field starts at U and ends at V. The scan fines are not

horizontal because a small voltage is applied, moving the electron beam down over

time.

Digital video

Digital video is an electronic representation of moving visual images (video) in the form

of encoded digital data. This is in contrast to analog video, which represents moving

visual images with analog signals. Digital video comprises a series of digital images

displayed in rapid succession.

Digital video was first introduced commercially in 1986 with the Sony D1 format

[citation needed], which recorded an uncompressed standard definition component

video signal in digital form. In addition to uncompressed formats, popular compressed

digital video formats today include H.264 and MPEG-4. Modern interconnect standards

for digital video include HDMI, Display Port, Digital Visual Interface (DVI) and serial

digital interface (SDI).

Digital video can be copied with no degradation in quality. In contrast, when analog

sources are copied, they experience generation. Digital video can be stored on digital

media such as Blue-ray Disc, on computer data storage or streamed over the Internet to

end users who watch content on a desktop computer screen or a digital smart TV. In

everyday practice, digital video content such as TV shows and movies also includes a

digital audio soundtrack.

Brief note on Various Video standards PAL, NTSC

Pal

Phase Alternating Line (PAL) is a color encoding system for analogue television used

in broadcast television systems in most countries broadcasting at 625-line / 50 field (25

frame) per second (576i). Other common color encoding systems are NTSC and

SECAM.

All the countries using PAL are currently in process of conversion or have already

converted standards to DVB, ISDB or DTMB.

This page primarily discusses the PAL color encoding system. The articles on broadcast

television systems and analogue television further describe frame rates, image

resolution and audio modulation.

NTSC, named after the National Television System Committee,[1] is the analog

television color system that was used in North America from 1954 and until digital

conversion, was used in most of the Americas

(except Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and French Guiana);Myanmar; South

Korea; Taiwan; Philippines, Japan;[2] and some Pacific island nations and territories

(see map).

The first NTSC standard was developed in 1941 and had no provision for color. In 1953

a second NTSC standard was adopted, which allowed for color

television broadcasting which was compatible with the existing stock of black-

andwhite receivers. NTSC was the first widely adopted broadcast color system and

remained dominant until the 2000s, when it started to be replaced with different digital

standards such as ATSC and others.

Most countries using the NTSC standard, as well as those using other analog television

standards, have switched to, or are in process of switching to newer digital television

standards, there being at least four different standards in use around the world. North

America, parts of Central America, and South Korea are adopting or have adopted the

ATSC standards, while other countries (such as Japan) are adopting or have adopted

other standards instead of ATSC. After nearly 70 years, the majority of over-the-air

NTSC transmissions in the United States ceased on January 1, 2010,[3] and by August

31, 2011[4] in Canada and most other NTSC markets.[5] The majority of NTSC

transmissions ended in Japan on July 24, 2011, with the Japanese prefectures of Iwate,

Miyagi, and Fukushima ending the next year.[4] After a pilot program in 2013, most

full-power analog stations in Mexico left the air on ten dates in 2015, with some 500

low-power and repeater stations allowed to remain in analog until the end of 2016.

Digital broadcasting allows higher-resolution television, but digital standard definition

television continues to use the frame rate and number of lines of resolution established

by the analog NTSC standard.

The Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG) is a working group of authorities that was formed by ISO

and IEC to set standards for audio and video compression and transmission.[1] It was established in

1988 by the initiative of Hiroshi Yasuda (Nippon Telegraph and Telephone) and Leonardo

Chiariglione [2] group Chair since its inception. The first MPEG meeting was in May 1988 in Ottawa,

Canada.[3][4][5] As of late 2005, MPEG has grown to include approximately 350 members per

meeting from various industries, universities, and research institutions.[needs update] MPEG's official

designation is ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 29/WG 11 – Coding of moving pictures and audio (ISO/IEC Joint

AVI

Audio Video Interleave (also Audio Video Interleaved), known by its initials AVI, is a

multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its

Video for Windows software. AVI files can contain both audio and video data in a file

container that allows synchronous audio-with-video playback. Like the DVD video

format, AVI files support multiple streaming audio and video, although these features

are seldom used. Most AVI files also use the file format extensions developed by the

Matrix Open DML group in February 1996. These files are supported by Microsoft, and

are unofficially called "AVI 2.0".

MJPG

This is a fork of http://sourceforge.net/projects/mjpg-streamer/ with added support for

the Raspberry Pi camera via the input rasp cam plug-in.

MJPG-streamer is a command line application that copies JPEG frames from one or

more input plugging to multiple output plugging. It can be used to stream JPEG files

over an IP-based network from a webcam to various types of viewers such as Chrome,

Firefox, Bamboozle, VLC, player, and other software capable of receiving MJPG

streams.

It was originally written for embedded devices with very limited resources in terms of

RAM and CPU. Its predecessor UVC streamer" was created because Linux-UVC

compatible cameras directly produce JPEG-data, allowing fast and perfuming MJPEG

streams even from an embedded device running Open WRT. The input module

"input_uvc.so" captures such JPG frames from a connected webcam. Mjpg-streamer

now supports a variety of different input devices.

ZS4 Video Editor is another great free video editing and compositing software that

Virtual Reality as new technology in multimedia

Virtual Reality (VR)

Virtual reality (VR) is an interactive computer-generated experience taking place within

a simulated environment, that incorporates mainly auditory and visual, but also other

types of sensory feedback like hap tic. This immersive environment can be similar to

the real world or it can be fantastical, creating an experience that is not possible in

ordinary physical reality. Augmented reality systems may also be considered a form of

VR that layers virtual information over a live camera feed into a headset or through a

Smartphone or tablet device giving the user the ability to view three-dimensional

images.

Current VR technology most commonly uses virtual reality headsets or multiprojected

environments, sometimes in combination with physical environments or props, to

generate realistic images, sounds and other sensations that simulate a user's physical

presence in a virtual or imaginary environment. A person using virtual reality equipment

is able to "look around" the artificial world, move around in it, and interact with virtual

features or items. The effect is commonly created by VR headsets consisting of a head-

Introduction to HMD

Short for head-mounted display, a headset used with virtual reality systems. An HMD

can be a pair of goggles or a full helmet. In front of each eye is a tiny monitor. Because

there are two monitors, images appear as three-dimensional. In addition, most HMDs

include a head tracker so that the system can respond to head movements. For example,

if you move your head left, the images in the monitors will change to make it seem as

if you're actually looking at a different part of the virtual reality.A typical HMD has one

or two small displays, with lenses and semi-transparent mirrors embedded in eyeglasses

(also termed data glasses), a visor, or a helmet. The display units are miniaturized and

may include cathode ray tubes (CRT), liquid crystal displays (LCDs), liquid crystal on

silicon (LCos), or organic light-emitting diodes (OLED). Some vendors employ

multiple micro-displays to increase total resolution and field of view.

HMDs differ in whether they can display only computer-generated imagery (CGI), or

only live imagery from the physical world, or combination. Most HMDs can display

only a computer-generated image, sometimes referred to as virtual image. Some HMDs

can allow a CGI to be superimposed on real-world view. This is sometimes referred to

as augmented reality or mixed reality. Combining real-world view with CGI can be

done by projecting the CGI through a partially reflective mirror and viewing the real

world directly. This method is often called optical see-through. Combining real-world

view with CGI can also be done electronically by accepting video from a camera and

mixing it electronically with CGI. This method is often called video see-through.

Boom cave

A cave automatic virtual environment (better known by the recursive acronym (CAVE)

is an immersive virtual reality environment where projectors are directed to between

three and six of the walls of a roomsized cube. The name is also a reference to the

allegory of the Cave in Plato's Republic in which a philosopher contemplates

perception, reality and illusion.

CAVE is a virtual reality environment consisting of a cube-shaped VR room in which

the walls, floors and ceilings are projection screens. The user typically wears a VR

headset or head-up display (HUD) and interacts through input devices such as wands,

joysticks or data gloves.

The CAVE is contained within a larger room that must be absolutely dark when the

CAVE is in use. Three-dimensional (3-D) images within the cave appear to float in mid-

air. The viewer, whose headgear is synchronized with the projectors, can walk around

an image to study it from all angles. Sensors within the room track the viewer's position

to align the perspective correctly.

Because the word "Cave" itself appears in the name, CAVE is what is called a recursive

acronym. The name itself alludes to Plato's allegory in which prisoners confined to a

cave interpreted external events from the shadows and echoes experienced within the

cave. Most interpretations of the allegory center on the idea that our perception of reality

is, similarly, not reality itself but a construct of reality created by our minds.

VR rooms are one way to enable a virtual reality experience. A newer technology, room-

scale VR, is the use of hardware and software to enable a virtual reality experience

within a cleared area.

Introduction to various types of Authoring Tool

Multimedia Authoring Tools are also known as Author ware. It is a program that helps

the author [user/programmer] write hyper text (or) multimedia application. Authoring

tools usually enable a user to create a final application merely linking together. Objects

such as paragraph of text, illustration (or) song can be embedded in a web page with the

help of authoring tools. Multimedia authoring tools provide the frame work for

organizing and editing the elements of multimedia projects. Authoring software

provides an integrated element for combining the content and the functions of the

project. It enables the developer to combine text, graphics, audio, video and animation

into an interactive presentation. Authoring system includes editing tools to create, edit

and convert multimedia elements such as animation and video clips. The process for

multimedia involves story boarding and flow chart development. Visual flow chart (or)

TYPES OF AUTHORING TOOLS

There are 3 types of authoring tools and they are as follows:

1. Card and page based tools

2. Icon based- event driven tools

3. Time based tools

Now let us discuss these three authoring tools in details along with their required

software, their corresponding advantages and disadvantages.

Card and page based tools:

This tool provides a simple and easily understandable metaphor for organizing

multimedia elements. It contains media objects such as buttons, text files and graphic

objects. It provides facilities for linking objects to pages (or) cards. The software

required is hyper card and Linked card tool box. Advantages:

• Easy to understand

• Easy to use

• Easy to link metaphor1=screen1=card1= page1

• It consumes very less time for developing an application.

Disadvantages:

• Few applications run only on one platform.

• Card and page tools are not powerful as unique stand alone.

Icon based- event driven tools:

Icons (or) object based tools are the simplest event driven authoring object. Its provision

of simple branching has the ability to go to another section of multimedia production.

Multimedia elements and interaction are organized in the flowchart. A flow chart can

be build by dragging appropriate icons from a library and then dropping them in the

required field finally adding multimedia elements to it. The software required is Icon

Author and Author ware.

Advantages:

• It has a clear structure [appropriately designed flow charts].

• Easy to edit and update the elements.

Disadvantages:

Time based tools are best suited for a message with a beginning and an end so that a

message can be passed within a stipulated time period. Few time based tools facilitate

navigation and interactive control. It has the branching technique so that different loops

can be formed for different multimedia applications and time period can be set for these

individual applications. The software required is Adobe’s Directors.

Advantages:

• These tools are good for creating animation.

• Branching, user control interactivity

Disadvantages:

• Steep learning curve for advance features.
