Diamond D Angus would like to thank all of our past and future customers for supporting and believing in our program. We have chosen to put a lot more emphases on functional and economic traits rather than EPD’s. During the 1980’s, cattle were being bred to look like race horses - all legs and no guts. Many of the functional traits were left behind in the race for big numbers. We did not follow this trend; instead, choosing to breed for just classic Angus traits. While we have not bred cattle for carcass numbers, our ultrasound numbers are very good. This is an indication that just good basic Angus have always had good quality meat. ♦ Consistency - Diamond D Angus genetics will breed more true —due to the many years of breeding like cattle on like cattle. We do not subscribe to the bull of the month club.♦ Calving ease - We have always put emphases on good calving ease. We typically will not use a bull on cows that we would not also use on first calf heifers.♦ Carcass - Ultrasound has proven that DDA cattle excel in the grass fed beef industry, and as always, are still suitable for the feed lot. Diamond D Angus cattle have proven to be consistently superior in tenderness. ♦ Efficiency - For many years, the cows and calves have been weighed at weaning and conditions scores are given. Typically our cows are weaning calves weighing 50% of their own weight or greater. We prefer a 4-frame cow weighing 1200 to 1300 pounds in good flesh.♦ Longevity - Most traits can be compared to a chapter in a book, but longevity is the entire book. Diamond D Angus has numerous cows that are still in the herd at the age of fifteen and beyond.

Our commercial industry needs great cattle, not cattle with great numbers. Breeding cattle with great numbers is easy. Breeding great cattle is a challenging task.

♦ Increased fertility. ♦Will continue to gain weight through first breeding season. ♦ No bull’s feet or legs ruined due to hot feed. ♦ More years of service. ♦ Our bulls are conditioned to the real world. ♦ Fewer injuries. ♦ Fewer breeding problems.

The emphasis here on the ranch has been placed on efficiency, moderate frame and high maternal mothers. We like a 4-frame cow that will weigh 1200 to 1300 pounds in good flesh. We feel these are the cows that will last in the herd. This is not a new direction or philosophy for Diamond D Angus. We have been consistent, with very little variation for over forty-seven years.

We are so happy to have Jim Munroe working with us here at Diamond D. His wife Angie & their kids all help when we need extra hands. We are pleased to have them.

♦ This is a ¾ brother to to our DDA Pinebank 50H sold to the Ole farms in Canada 10 years ago. Travis Olson reported that many of there favorite cows now are sired by the 50H bull. Bulls with this kind of fertility and drive will sire fertile, feminine females. This bull is very correct with great feet. The 202 bull is a very impressive individual. To say he is a breeding machine would be an understatement. As a two year old he bred 75 out of 77 three year olds. At the age of 3 he bred 77 out of 80 three year olds. On the first jump at the semen collection center, he produced just under 500 straws of very concentrated semen. If you want fertile replacement females you need to use very fertile bulls. Diamond D Angus has always bred cattle with longevity and fertility.♦ Josh Freiberger, owner of Hague Angus Ranch, bought our DDA Stella 443 cow for a foundation for his registered herd. She is the mother of the 202 bull; she is a beautiful cow at the age of 13. Sons of 202 were our high selling sire group in 2016. ♦ The 202 bull received 4 stars in the new T-Snap Fescue tolerance test. I know of no bull that has tested any better. This will be a game changer for those who struggle with fescue endophyte. ♦ Co-owned with Hague Angus Ranch.

♦ We are happy to announce DDA Emblazon 27C has been put to the test all across the U.S., Canada, Australia and South America. He may be the thickest easiest fleshing bull we have ever seen, and he does it on 100% forage. A large part of our market is semen sold to cow/calf operations. The registered breeders that have chosen to use this great sire have offspring that top their sales. ♦ The mother of 27C is now 20 years old and still in production. She and 27C both landed spots in the Angus Legends books.♦ This great sire should be in every registered herd in the country. I know he will not be, because he was not bred for the EPD numbers. DDA Emblazon 27C is a five frame bull, weighing 2300 lbs. after the breeding season. He is an udder-fixer due to Shoshone 130, Bear and Fahren of Wye on the dam side and OCC Emblazon on the sire side. He traces to the same cow family as DDA Fahren 21X. ♦ Phenotypically, this bull is very correct with great feet and legs.

♦ What an outstanding individual DDA Lodge E5H is. He is very deep, long and thick. He has a great temperament and very good feet and legs. He is a maternal brother to 27C. His sire is Lodge of Wye. Lodge is one of twelve bulls in the entire breed that has been proven genetic defect free. We have four full sisters to E5H in production and they are phenotypically very correct. The E5H daughters are beautiful young cows. They are very feminine, fertile cows that will stay in production for a very long time. Udder quality is nearly perfect. The E5H sons have sold very well at our sale.

♦ The 824 cow and her son 27C are both listed in the Angus Legends book. She is 20 years old and is in embryo production at the present time. She is what main stream Angus is lacking. She is an example of what can be accomplished when traits like feet, udder quality, fleshing ability, fertility and structure are selected and then repeated for generations. These are most of the essential traits that determine whether a cow/calf operation is profitable or not during middle of the road prices, like we are in today. Notice that none of these traits are measured by an EPD. I feel obligated as a seed-stock producer to offer genetics that are profitable in both good and poor cattle markets.

♦ I have been home on the ranch since 1988 and that was our goal then and it has not changed. My Dad told me from the start, “We will raise good quality, efficient females, even if that means not selling another bull.” We feel that if you continue to select for the traits that make a cow profitable, the sons from the cow herd will consistently be the type that work in a cow/calf operation. When selecting a bull for a cow, I never think to my self, “What bull should I use on this cow to make a good bull?” It is always, “What bull do I use on this cow to make her daughters even better?”

♦ If you want to produce a cow herd that the daughters will stay in production for 10 to 20 years, it is a must that you select from a herd that produces females that last greater than 10 years. No matter where you are buying semen, find out first how old the mother and grandmother to the bull you are buying the semen on are. Also, make sure that they have not missed a calving season. If you set your standards high in this criteria, this is a much greater tool than selecting for EPD numbers. Main stream Angus promoters will make every excuse in the book as to why their cows are not that old. The most common is “We sell all mature cows after the age of six.” Be very leery of these breeders, they are most likely playing what I call “the number game.” They have to keep turning over generations to keep up with the numbers race. Also notice many breeders have two seasons in which they calve. This is due to the fact that when they don’t breed in one season they can roll them to the next season. If you want to produce maternal cattle that last and are profitable, it is a must that you buy genetics from a breeder that does not make excuses for missing a calving season. Buy your genetics from a producer that has a proven record of cows staying in production for more than a decade and are still sound.

♦ One of the significant breeding strategies of the late Larry Leonhardt was to use linebreeding and inbreeding to create genetics that enhanced the odds of making his preferred maternal kind. Bulls like John Dockweiler’s Fremont were bred with the Shoshone tradition of concentrating the influence of the good cows in mind. Fremont’s female lineage includes Shoshone Ester 3116 six times, Shoshone Ester 3128 twice, Shoshone Prudence 6157 three times, Shoshone Prudence 6144 once, Blackcap Forever 485 three times as well as Shoshone Frances 6357 the dam of Diamond D herdsire Shoshone 130-6357.♦ Larry selected his herdsires imagining their female ancestry as a pen of females. John Dockweiler commented, ”It takes time to concentrate genetically superior cows into every slot of an animal’s recent recorded ancestry.” Fremont’s first daughters are exemplifying the qualities that Larry Leonhardt and all who appreciate maternal genetics are breeding for. Expect soft temperaments, great maternal instinct, moderate size, exceptional udders and the trouble free characteristics of Shoshone genetics. Here is an opportunity for any producer looking for a reliable maternal sire who will produce a high percentage of front pasture quality cows.

♦ Bar Lad 4218 traces many times back to the great Southolm Bar Lad 50D.♦ This is a great example of why we have chosen not to select on EPD numbers. If you breed for EPD numbers, I am sure you would not even stop to take a second look at this bull. Some of the best maternal bulls we have used in the past have EPD numbers in the toilet. If you look over history of what has and is still happening in the Angus breed, the cattle that have been bred for EPD numbers do not have the capability of staying in production for long enough to be profitable in a cow/calf operation. It is my job, as a seed stock producer, to use genetics that help keep cow/calf producers in business. We believe if you do not have decent longevity, it is impossible to stay profitable in an average price range like we are in now.♦ Fairview Bar Lad 4218 has some of the great foundation genetics that my grandfather and father started with. We are still lining up some of the great old cow families that trace to these same reliable genetics today. In fact our old 368 cow lineage has some of the very same time tested names in her pedigree. We have a daughter of the 368 still in production at 18 years old and our vet called breed again this winter. I told him how old she was and he could hardly believe it. We also had another daughter to the 368, 580, stay in production until she was 20. The 368 stayed in production until she was 22.

♦ Our DDA B&T 18K has proven to be a very valuable herd sire for us. His sons look like herd bulls and his daughters are very feminine mother cows with good udder structure. His offspring are very soft on temperament and phenotypically, are very correct. He is long bodied with great depth and thickness. ♦ The average birth weight on his 70 sons has been 78 pounds, all falling between 69 and 85 pounds. He is double bred Banjo of Wye. At the age of 17 we found the old 031 cow down on ice and not able to get up. I will always be reminded of her every time I look at daughters of the 18K.♦ Diamond D Angus will be using this great sire very heavily in the upcoming years.

I was visiting with John after our sale in 2015 and he said, “You need to see the 14M now.” I could not help myself; a couple of weeks later I stopped to look at him and what I saw was almost unbelievable. The condition that the 14M bull was in was truly amazing. He was run out on range with no extra goodies. His feet look almost perfect and have never been touched. His temperament is very good. This is a bull that the entire breed would benefit from. He would be an outcross to the entire breed. We have already sold 2000 straws on this great red bull in Uruguay.

The Diamond D Angus StoryI am the third generation DeBoo raising functional Angus cows. It all started with my grandfather and grandmother (Charlie and Mary) in the 1950’s. At that time, Charles was the only registered Angus breeder in the Golden Triangle area of Montana. In the early days, he owned a bull called Pattern of Wye. Pattern of Wye was instrumental in shaping the future for DDA.In 1972, my grandfather’s life was cut short after hip replacement surgery. He died less than 24 hours later. My dad and mom (Don and Janet) were married in 1957 and started raising cows on shares with my grandparents, on a small ranch 10 miles southwest of Valier. My Mom and Dad raised 7 kids on this small operation. Needless to say, everyone needed to learn how to work and be very thrifty and efficient. That also included the cows. In 1962, my Mom and Dad bought their first registered Angus heifers. They continued raising commercial cattle at that time. Due to the influence from Pattern of Wye, my Dad learned that all cows were not created equally. In the 1960’s, most cattle were very short and blocky; they would have been a frame score of 1 or maybe in the negative figures. The Wye cattle were the larger framed cattle for the time period. The industry trend changed in the late 60’s and early 70’s to larger framed cattle and the Wye cattle became very popular. There were a lot of very functional cattle at that time. The trend continued to go larger and larger framed in the late 70’s and 80’s. My parents tried to follow the trend until the early 1980’s.I am very thankful that at that time my parents knew what a really good functional Angus cow was like. It did not take them long to understand the direction the industry was headed and this was not the path they wanted to be on. Due to the influence of the Pattern of Wye bull in the early 70’s and the direction the whole industry was headed, Diamond D Angus knew they didn’t want to follow this route. They decided with the knowledge of the old Pattern Bull, they would once again go to the Wye herd for their genetics. My parents spent many years selling bulls private treaty to repeat commercial buyers. After working 6 years as a mechanic for John Deere, I (Mark) moved back to the ranch in 1988. We had our 1st production sale in the spring of 1989 in an old barn. Looking at it today, I still wonder how we did it. At that time, we were selling about 50 bulls at the sale. Perhaps our competition was averaging more per bull than we were, for it was the start of the big EPD race. We continued to line breed for functional, maternal and efficient traits. This was not a popular or easy path to be on at the time, but I am 100% convinced it was the proper path to take.In 2006, we had our first fall production sale where we sold long yearling forage developed bulls. I would challenge any registered breeder to forage test your bulls if you really want to know what they are made of. This has proven to be a very good change for DDA. In recent years, we are selling our genetics all over the US, Canada and Argentina. My wife Cathy and I now sell about 130 bulls every fall and about 100 bred females at our production sale. This is our 14th annual Sire Directory where we offer our time-tested line bred genetics.

Todd Churchill founder of Thousand Hills Cattle Company stated, “After examining over 5 thousand 100% grass feed cattle, the fat open 24 month old heifers Mark shipped to me are consistently the best cattle I killed. These heifers had excellent marbling, back fat, large ribeyes great tenderness and fine muscle texture. My only complaint is that there aren’t enough of them and they make the rest of the fat cattle look bad.In addition to the desirable carcass qualities, because of tight breeding and ruthless culling over the years, I like all the DDA cattle I’ve seen at their sales–they would all work perfectly in the Thousand Hills Cattle Company. Please consider using DDA bulls, especially if you are in MN or the Dakotas, because I want to purchase more DDA influence cattle.”
