BY TOM DOUDNEY AND GABRIELLE STUARTAlmost one in every 10 working people living in Selwyn earns more than $100,000 a year, compared to one in 20 a decade ago, new data shows.

The overall number of working people living in the district swelled by 30 per cent between 2006 and 2013.

The information released by Statistics New Zealand uses data from the last two censuses to track and compare occupations and incomes across regions and industries.

It shows that the number of working people living in the district rose from 19,017 to 24,801, reflecting a district-wide population which grew 33 per cent from 33,642 to 44,595 during the same time period.

Unsurprisingly, the biggest rise was in the number of construction trade workers which climbed 63 per cent to 549.

Education, health and technicians were also areas of strong employment growth.

Women have narrowed the pay gap with their male counterparts slightly since 2006 but a big disparity remains.

The percentage of Selwyn residents earning $100,000 a year who are women increased from 17 per cent to 20 per cent. Four per cent of working women earned more than $100,000 a year, compared to 14 per cent of working men.

Some put the gap down to the fact women were more likely to take time off or work part-time because they were raising children, Pay Equity Challenge Coalition spokeswoman Angela McLeod said.

But she believed that was only a minor factor.

“There are a lot of men who want flexible hours, to spend time with their children or for all sorts of different reasons, and the figures show men working part-time roles still earn more than women working part-time. There is a structural discrimination.”

A tui has been sighted in Lincoln for what locals say may be the first time in more than a decade.

There have been at least three sightings of the bird in Mahoe Reserve during the last few weeks, with observations docu-mented on the New Zealand Bio-Recording Network Trust’s NatureWatch NZ blog.

Although tui were released in Banks Peninsula in 2009 to try and re-establish a local popula-tion, this bird was unbanded. It has been speculated that it may be either a chick of one of the released birds or may have been blown in from the Southern Alps during recent storms.

One of those to observe the tui was Lincoln University ecologist Mike Bowie who was there for a tree planting event in the reserve.

Mr Bowie said he had lived in Lincoln for 15 years and never seen a tui in the area before.

“Since the Canterbury Plains were cleared of native flora and food for them, they have essen-tially left the plains except where there may be remnants [of native vegetation] close enough to the Southern Alps or to other populations,” Mr Bowie said.

“It doesn’t necessarily mean they have colonised the area but

it’s certainly a good sign that we are turning the tide a little bit.”

He said such sightings showed the value of previous plantings in the reserve and of the work of groups such as the Te Ara Kakariki Greenway Canterbury Trust which is dedicated to restoring native vegetation on the plains.

Further replanting might in future lure back not only tui but other species such as bellbird and kereru.

Another surprising find had been recorded in Mahoe Reserve by Mr Bowie and his

colleague Morgan Shield dur-ing a moth trapping exercise in February.

The exercise turned up 33 moth species, one more than were collected in the signifi-cantly larger Prebbleton Re-serve on the same night. One of the specimens was the large moth Graphania nullifera – the host of which is Aciphylla or speargrass.

Few speargrass plants survive on lowland Canterbury so Mr Bowie said it was a bit of a mys-tery where this moth may have flown from.

Things may be looking up again for the proposed West Melton shopping centre with talks with a potential new investor under way.

Developer Robin Butt said no agreement had been reached yet but things were looking positive.

Last week it was revealed the previous investor had pulled out after being unable to organise the necessary funds.

Although he wouldn’t say who the potential new investor was he said it was someone he and wife Jackie had worked with before.

“They are crunching the numbers now and if the numbers come up all right they have got the ability to handle [the invest-ment].”

He couldn’t say when construc-tion would be likely to begin or when the shopping centre might be expected to open until the deal had been confirmed.

“We have got all the resource consents, it’s just a matter of get-ting all your bases covered,” Mr Butt said.

“I feel really good about things – especially for the people of West Melton. They are just cry-ing out for it. Everywhere we go around West Melton people are asking us all the time ‘when are the shops starting?’ ”

▌▌ IN BRIEF

Eggs well doneA Springston woman was left red faced about having to call firefighters to her home after driving to her job in Hornby and realising she had left her boiled eggs cooking on the stove. The water boiled away to nothing, creating a nasty smell and plenty of smoke but firefighters ar-rived before any real damage was done. Lincoln Volunteer Fire Brigade acting station officer Tim Quinlivan said the woman had been very apologetic when she returned to find firefighters airing out the smoke-filled house.

Rates remissionA policy of rates remission for residents whose properties have been made un-inhabitable by the September 2010 and subsequent earthquakes and are living elsewhere while their dwellings are being rebuilt has been recommended for exten-sion. The policy, which was introduced in October 2010, is due to expire on June 30. Tomorrow, district councillors will vote on extending it until June 30, 2016.

Faster broadbandSouthbridge internet users should now be able to receive faster broadband after work on upgrading the fibre cabinet was completed recently. Chorus general manager of infrastructure Ed Beattie said slow internet speeds had been a concern for businesses and residents in the town for a while. Before the upgrade, customers could generally only access broadband speeds of between one and five megabits per second, which would have slowed considerably during peak usage times. Following the upgrade, residents and businesses should now be able to experience speeds of between 10 and 20Mbps, depending on the distance to the broadband cabinet. Speeds should remain consistent during peak times.

Selwyn may have anywhere between eight and 11 district councillors at the table after next year’s election, and some resi-dents will find themselves voting in a different ward, in spite of living in the same place.

Uneven population growth means that changes to ward boundaries and the number of district councillors are among a number of tweaks that may need to be made in order for the district to comply with local government rules.

The Local Government Com-mission requires the population of each ward when divided by its number of councillors to pro-duce a figure no more than 10 per cent greater or smaller than

the population of the district divided by the total number of councillors.

Selwyn currently has 11 councillors, as well as the mayor, elected from four wards – Sel-wyn Central, Springs, Malvern and Ellesmere.

The Ellesmere ward exceeds the plus or minus 10 per cent threshold due to its compara-tively low population while Sel-wyn Central is moving towards the threshold due to its com-paratively large population.

Statistics New Zealand figures show growth is not evenly spread across the district. Selwyn Central has an estimated growth rate of 6.7 per cent a year while Malvern has the lowest estimated growth rate of 4.1 per cent.

A report to the district

council’s representation review sub-committee stated that the four-ward structure “has been a good reflection of communi-ties of interest and also provides local representation but none of the different member options result in LGC rules being met.”

This means that either there will need to be a different num-ber of wards – options from no wards up to five wards are being looked at – or the boundaries of the existing wards will need to be changed. If the four-ward system is maintained, Ellesmere’s boundar-ies will need to expand to take in a larger population, while Selwyn Central, which currently contains Rolleston, Burnham, West Melton and the rural areas in between, would need to shrink.

To make the LGC calculation

stack up, the number of district councillors could potentially drop to as low as eight.

District councillor Mark Alexander, a member of the sub-committee, said there was no one set of changes that was cur-rently emerging as the favoured model and all workable options remained open.

“When we do go back to the public [for consultation] it’s more likely to be a couple of options rather than ‘this is the model, take it or leave it.’ It’s more likely we will say ‘here is a range of some possible structures’ from some that are closer to the status quo to some that may reflect the changing nature of Selwyn.”

The sub-committee is expect-ed to produce a draft proposal in June.

HAVING A WORD: Minister of Education Hekia Parata chats with Ladbrooks School pupil Emma Bellamy during a recent visit. Selwyn MP Amy Adams, who also attended, encouraged Ms Parata to visit the small country school with her because she wanted to showcase its learning programme. During the visit Ms Parata met with the staff and board of trustees, observed a literacy programme, and was shown a number of environmental projects by the school’s Nature Ninjas Enviro group.

So many businesses achieved the top ‘platinum’ award in the district’s Sus-tainable Business Awards last year that organisers are raising the bar.

A record 134 businesses took part last year, from the areas of Lincoln, Ellesmere, Tai Tapu, Prebbleton  and Rolleston. Of these, 27 were awarded platinum status.

On average, businesses achieved higher award levels than in previous years, showing improved environmen-tally sustainable practices across the district.

Following suggestions from a number of last year’s participating businesses, the Lincoln Envirotown Trust, which oversees the assessment

and organisation of the scheme, has decided to introduce a new ‘diamond’ award.

“This has been done to present businesses with new challenges as well as allowing them more scope to highlight the initiatives that they undertake,” LET chairwoman Sue Jarvis said.

The annual awards culminate in three ceremonies for the different areas, at-tended by guest speakers and dignitar-ies. Winners are presented with trophies and certificates which can be seen displayed in the participants’ places of work will be handed out.

Businesses which gain a silver award or better are offered free ad-

vertising on the Lincoln Envirotown Trust web site.

This year’s assessments will start in June and any businesses interested in knowing more about how to get involved can contact awards co-ordinator Dave Fitzjohn on 423 0445 or by email at [email protected].

LET is looking for assessors for the areas of Lincoln, Leeston, Prebbleton, Southbridge, Tai Tapu, Rolleston, and Dunsandel. Full training is provided and assessors are able to work flexible hours at their discretion.

Anyone interested in this work can phone Mrs Jarvis on 329 5858 or by emailing [email protected]

The area of Rolleston where legal highs are proposed to be allowed to be sold has been trimmed back to protect Rolleston School from any negative effects.

The district council’s Local Approved Products Policy will be up for approval at tomorrow’s meeting.

A strongly worded letter rebuk-ing the Government for its han-dling of legislation around legal highs, signed by Mayor Kelvin Coe, has also been drafted.

Under the Psychoactive Substances Act 2013, the district council was allowed to develop an LAPP, to be used by the Min-istry of Health in deciding where stores selling legal highs should be allowed to set up in Selwyn.

There are not currently any stores in the district.

The district council initially proposed to make the business 1 zoned land in central Rolleston the only place in the district where the products can be sold. It has now reduced the area further by removing the northern part centred around Norman Kirk Drive.

The hearing panel noted that the area contained no businesses besides the district council headquarters and that the presence of people around a

retailer selling legal highs could negatively impact on after-hours activities at nearby Rolleston School.

During public consultation many people expressed a desire to see the products banned from Selwyn altogether – however, that was not an option provided for by the legislation.

The letter signed by Mr Coe expressed the district council’s frustration that it had borne the financial burden of introducing the policy without being able to “fully or adequately represent” the views of its community.

“There may never be any ap-plications received to sell these products in Selwyn, but in spite of this, we have been faced with considerable time and expense in putting in place a policy that gave us no option other than to provide potential locations for these products to be sold.

“We also believe that the status of our policy as a recommenda-tion to the decision making body rather than an ability to control the location of any stores further limits our role in representing our community.”

The letter also criticised the Government for not allowing it the ability to ban stores from the district or impose reduced hours of operation.

“This is also concerning to us

as we do not have a full-time police presence anywhere in our district.”

However, Senior Sergeant Peter Stills said he didn’t see a lack of police presence being a problem as Rolleston police of-ficers worked into the early hours of the morning at the weekends and were always on call.

“I can’t see that we are going to be getting retail sales outside the hours we are working,” he said.

Selwyn MP Amy Adams said Government legislation had made sale of products that caused harm or that were addictive il-legal and tests to prove products were safe would be prohibitively expensive for those wishing to sell them.

“I think we can be confident that we’ll never see the types of product that caused concern legally available for sale on our shelves again,” she said.

“Notwithstanding this, if coun-cils wish to plan for this highly unlikely prospect they can do so but it is important to note that there is no obligation on them to do so.”

Rolleston School board of trustees chairwoman Leanne Brown said she was pleased the northern part of central Rolleston had been removed as that would negate the board’s concerns.

Legal high retail area cut back to protect school

Lincoln Primary School pupils spent last week getting to know people with an intellectual dis-ability as they took a tour of the Kilmarnock Enterprises factory in Christchurch.

Pupils from years 1-3 took turns visiting the factory, meeting the team, and learning more about the work they did.

Kilmarnock Enterprises’ goal is to help intellectually disabled people develop the skills and con-fidence to transition into outside employment.

The company regularly holds talks and host tours of the factory to promote employment for people with a disability and to help build

a more inclusive society that cel-ebrates difference.

Children with a disability are often mainstreamed through the New Zealand schooling system and taught to expect the same opportu-nities as other students. Once they leave school, opportunities can be few and prejudice is widespread.

Kilmarnock Enterprises chief executive Michelle Sharp said the team was excited to meet the chil-dren.

“Society can be very isolating for people with a disability and this is a great opportunity to educate the younger generation on the value of difference. The team at Kilmarnock is amazing beyond words and now the community gets to see that.”

Selwyn residents are being invited to help identify parts of the dis-trict that are affected by problems with internet services and mobile blackspots.

The district council has launched a survey on the matter.

Chief executive David Ward said the district council had heard from a number of people that problems with internet access or mobile coverage were affecting local residents and businesses in a number of areas.

“The survey aims to identify which areas are experiencing issues and what the problems are – for example, are they impacting people’s ability to do business or to access information and services?”

The Government recently an-nounced that it was planning to extend ultra-fast broadband and continue funding rural broadband expansion as well as establish a new mobile blackspot fund.

The district council will use the information to consider if Selwyn is eligible to apply for funding.

To complete the survey visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay. Hard copies are also available at Selwyn libraries or you can request to be sent a copy by phoning the district council on 347 2800 or 318 8338.

The survey is open until May 26 and takes five to 10 minutes to complete.

▌▌READER’S LETTER• Recently it was reported how much ratepayers’ money Selwyn District Council was spending on obtaining legal advice to stay within the confines of the law.

After their stock bureaucratic reply to my concerns regarding the danger created by trucks us-ing the roads south of Lincoln (the Selwyn Times, April 14) I feel the council has at some point ei-ther intentionally or unintention-ally, misplaced its humanity. As public servants they have a moral obligation, not just a legal one, to ensure the safety of the general public.

The people driving and cycling past my house are family, friends, neighbours but most are actually complete strangers who belong to other families. However, I still feel a responsibility towards their safety, hence my actions.

Those who can have changed routes and modes of transport but the people who have to access

their homes by these roads don’t have a choice. After the last five years a pervading tiredness has affected many people’s ability to speak up.

Should an accident occur Sel-wyn District Council, police and the trucking company already have their appointed scapegoat in the truck driver.

This is what should have hap-pened:

1. Prior notification to those on the truck route.

2. Hours of operation to be week days, 9am-3pm, allowing people to get to school, work and

home again safely.3. No weekends as non-locals

use the road at this time and are unaware of the trucks.

4. Speed limit for a truck/trailer of this size, fully laden, on these roads should be 50km/h.

If the above steps had been taken it would have indicated a degree of humanity and a desire to work with the community in partnership. This council lacks this desire on so many levels I cannot envisage it operating in its present form for too much longer.

Main South Rd has been under the spotlight after a number of car crashes this year but at least one person thinks we should be more worried about nearby Jones Rd.

District councillor Peter Hill is calling for changes to two inter-sections on Jones Rd, which runs parallel to Main South Rd from Rolleston to Templeton.

Cr Hill has requested that the possibility of closing off the sec-tions of Dawsons and Curraghs Rds between Main South Rd and Jones Rd be investigated.

Some drivers use Jones Rd as an alternative route because they feel unsafe on Main South Rd.

Cr Hill said the danger on Main South Rd was overstated and more crashes happened there simply because of the number of cars travelling on that stretch of road.

Drivers using Jones Rd to avoid Main South Rd was problematic because it meant more traffic us-ing a road which he believed had more dangerous intersections.

“The intersections there are too complicated. They are the problem – particularly the Dawsons and Curraghs Rds intersections,” Cr Hill said.

“There are the railway lines with signs, the main road in the distance with cars going along it, there is Jones Rd with no cars on it and it’s obvious to me that what’s going to happen every now and again is someone is going to miss the stop signs and come through on to Jones Rd and every now and

again there will be someone using Jones Rd at the wrong time.”

Cr Hill cited the case of Taiwan-ese tourist Chia-Fang Chu who, in February, drove a rental van through a stop sign on Dawsons Rd and collided with a four-wheel-drive travelling along Jones Rd, resulting in the death of her father, Fu-Hwa Ju.

Ms Chu had stopped at the rail-way crossing but did not see the stop sign just after it.

Cr Hill said district council staff had expressed some concerns that closing off the intersections might

push more traffic on to Weedons Ross Rd and Kirk Rd.

However, he still believed it was worth investigating.

“I believe that if we worked out the number of vehicle kilometres on Jones Rd, the crash rate would be way higher than Main South Rd and basically the intersections are the reason for that,” Cr Hill said.

District council statistics show that Jones Rd has about 3400 aver-age daily vehicle movements and between 2010 and 2015 there have been 44 crashes including one fatal-

ity and six serious injury crashes.New Zealand Transport Agency

statistics show that Main South Rd, between Rolleston and Templeton, has about 20,000 vehicle movements a day and over the same period has seen 163 crashes including one fatality and 16 involving serious injury.

Of the 41 crashes on Jones Rd between 2010 and 2014, 32 were at intersections. The Dawsons and Curraghs Rds intersections accounted for almost two thirds of these with 10 and nine crashes respectively.

Jones Rd needs safety review

Quick action from Rolleston firefighters averted disaster for a farmer but it was his 10,000 chickens that had the most to be grateful for.

A chicken shed at a Weedons Ross Rd farm caught fire when a light bulb exploded and ignited, setting the wood shavings that some of the chicks had been sleeping on alight, on Wednesday at about 7.40pm.

Firefighters responded quickly and were able to contain the fire to one end of the 50m by 10m shed before putting it out. In spite of 10,000 chickens being inside at the time, only a handful died.

Rolleston chief fire officer Nigel Lilley praised his brigade for their efforts.

“The boys hit it pretty hard, pretty fast, which was really, really good because once those chicken sheds get going, they re-ally get going.”

The farmer, who declined to be named, said the firefighters had done a really good job.

“They deserve a beer – and they will get one too, you wait and see.”

The chickens had all crowded down the other end of the shed when the fire started. The few which died were killed as a result of getting wet during the fire-fighting efforts.

•Private George StapletonGeorge Stapleton was born at

Dunsandel on October 28, 1890, to George and Mary Stapleton.

He was an attendant and clerk at the Burnham Industrial School before starting business with  his uncle, Mr A McPherson, as a butcher. He was a keen footballer and tennis player.

Stapleton enlisted on May 30, 1916, and was assigned to the 17th Reinforcements of the Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on September 19, four days before

departing for Devonport and then France.

On January 7, 1917, he was as-signed to the 2nd Battalion, Canter-bury Infantry, and was promoted to temporary Lance Corporal, a rank he had lost while in England.

Stapleton was sent to hospital with mumps on April 10 and then again with inner ear infection on May 11. He re-joined his unit on May 28.

He was killed in action on June 13, aged 26, in the last days of the Battle for Messines. The 2nd Can-terbury Battalion had relieved the

35th Battalion Australian Imperial Force, and came under a barrage of heavy gunfire.

Stapleton’s body was not found or identified and his name is inscribed on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing, as well as the Ellesmere County War Memo-rial’s Irwell plaque, the Dunsandel War Memorial and the South-bridge School Roll of Honour.

•Private Robert Charles Broomfield

Robert Charles Broomfield was born at London on August 10, 1883, to Robert and Elizabeth Broomfield.

Broomfield appears to have come to New Zealand in 1912 aboard the Matai and at the time of enlisting was farming at Spring-ston.

He had some previous military experience with the British Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve.

After enlisting on July 25, 1916, he was assigned to the 19th Reinforcements Canterbury Infantry Battalion, C Company, and embarked for Devonport on November 15, 1916.

He left England for France and

joined the 2nd Battalion, Canter-bury Infantry in the field on May 25.

Broomfield was killed in action, aged 34 on June 14, 1917, during the last days of the Battle for Mes-sines.

He died after the 2nd Canter-bury Battalion had relieved the 35th Battalion Australian Imperial Force and come under a barrage of heavy gunfire.

Broomfield’s name is on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing Belgium and the Springs-ton War Memorial.

•Corporal Robert BallaghRobert Ballagh was born at

Hororata on May 3, 1884, to Henry and Elizabeth Ballagh.

He was working as a farmer at Hororata before enlist-ing on May 21, 1915 and being assigned to the Trentham Regiment.

Ballagh embarked on October 9, for Suez and was sent to Ismalia on January 7, 1916. He left for France

on April 6, 1916.He was admitted to hospital

after being wounded in the thigh on May 25, and sent to the 7th General Hospital on May 8.

He spent much of June, July and August in various English hospitals but after being declared fit for service, he was attached to the to the depot at Hornchurch on August 15.

In September Ballagh left for France where he re-joined his unit in the field and was posted to C Company. He was promoted to Lance Corporal on December 13, then Corporal.

On May 6, 1917, he was  pro-moted to temporary Sergeant and then on June 8, 1917, he changed rank a number of times as the non-commissioned officers around him were killed or wound-ed, finally settling as Corporal.

Ballagh was declared as missing in action at Messines on June 18, 1917, aged 33. Such was the confu-sion after the sortie that he was at first thought to have been taken as prisoner but later investigations established the details around his death.

Soldiers of SelwynSoldiers of Selwyn Celebrating those who died in World War 1With SelWyn librarieS www.selwynlibrary.co.nz

World War 1 claimed the lives of about 18,000 New Zealand soldiers, while a further 41,000 were injured or fell ill. To honour those from Selwyn, a project was undertaken by volunteer historian Lynda Seaton on behalf of Selwyn Libraries to identify, research and record every soldier whose name was recorded on a World War 1 memorial in the district. To mark the centenary of the con-flict, the Selwyn Times continues its weekly series, Soldiers of Selwyn.

A few days after the Messines attack he and Sergeant Howorth went out along the canal to find where the Germans were. They went some way and, seeing nothing, decided to return and that is when the Germans ap-peared between them and their lines.

Sergeant Howorth looked back and saw Corporal Ballagh behind. When he looked round again he was no longer there.

His name is inscribed on the Messines Ridge Memorial to the Missing and the Hororata War Memorial.

•Donald Smith NorquayDonald Smith Norquay was

born the Orkney Islands on January 9, 1883, to George and Margaret Norquay of Scotland.

Norquay worked at Bankburn farm at the Orkney Islands be-fore emigrating to New Zealand with his older brother George, in 1912.

At the time of his enlistment, June 28, 1916, he was working as a labourer and as a dredge hand for the Ellesmere Drainage Board, and living at the Elles-mere Arms, Tai Tapu.

He was assigned to the 5th Reserve Battalion, 3rd New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and em-barked for France on October 16, 1916.

After some time attached to the Base Depot at Etaples, Norquay was posted to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd NZ Rifle Brigade on March 31, 1917.

On May 11 he was wounded in action at Messines, suffering a gunshot wound to his chest penetrating the lung. This was possibly during the digging of a new assembly-trench from 70 to 100 yards behind the front line.

Norquay was sent to the no 2 Australian Casualty Clearing station the next day and a week later was admitted to the No 3 Canadian General Hospital at Boulogne .

Norquay died of his wounds, aged 35, on June 21, 1917.

He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France, and remembered on the Tai Tapu War Memorial. In Scotland he is remembered on his parent’s gravestone in the St Peter’s churchyard on South Ronaldsay in the Orkney Islands.

•Private Walter Townsend  Anstiss

Walter Townsend Anstiss was born at Glentunnel on No-vember 2, 1878, to John Owen Anstiss and Susan Townsend Partridge.

Before enlisting, on September 19, 1916, he worked as a farm labourer for his father at Glentunnel. When both Anstiss and his brother Ernest had enlisted, his father sold the farm and moved to Springston.

Both brothers were assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Battalion, 21st Reinforcements and embarked for Devonport on March 27, 1917.

Anstiss’ conduct sheet from on board the ship noted that he was gambling and appearing on guard duty unshaven.

In England, he was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry, 4th Brigade, leaving for France on May 21.

On July 28 he suffered gun-

shot wounds causing a com-pound fracture to his skull. He was taken to the No 2 Austra-lian Casualty Clearing Station No 2 at Trois Arbres, near Bail-leul, where he died the next day, aged 38.

Anstiss is buried in the Trois Arbres Cemetery, Steernwerck, and remembered on the Mal-vern County War Memorial.

•Private Frederick BrownFrederick Brown was born in

Christchurch on May 17, 1874, to Charles Edwin and Emma Brown.

He was working as a labourer at Swannanoa before enlisting on September 19, 1916. How-ever, his last address was Kirwee and his obituary notes that he was “well known in Swannanoa and Hororata as a shearer and farm hand.”

Brown was assigned to the Canterbury Infantry Battalion, 21st Reinforcements, C Compa-ny. He was one of the older vol-unteers being aged 42 years and four months when he enlisted. He embarked for Devonport on January 19, 1917.

When something is broken we fix it. Essentially we have to use a physical solution to fix a physical problem.

The same happens if something in your body is misaligned or you have soft tissue damage causing you pain. There is not a chemical in existence that can fix it – we need to fix the problem not mask it.

This is where chiropractic treatment shines. Chiropractors provide physical solutions including adjustments, stretches, exercises, stretches and muscle therapy – to readjust the body or help it heal from conditions that are physical in origin. These can include problems such as back pain, muscle spasms, headaches and poor posture.

What you may not know is that it is also completely appropriate to receive chiropractic care even though you may not have symptoms. Unlike standard medical doctors who you visit when you have symptoms that need to be treated, chiropractors offer adjustments to improve spinal alignment and overall wellbeing – and can prevent the pain or other symptoms even starting.

You only need to continue to visit your chiropractor for as long as you wish to maintain the health of your neuromusculoskeletal system. Going to a chiropractor is much the same as going to

the dentist or gym or even leading a healthy life – it prevents problems from reaching critical stage where you can become incapacitated and as long as you keep up with regular visits, then you continue to enjoy the benefits of a life feeling well.

A large part of chiropractic technique involves manual manipulation which is a very effective treatment. However some patients do not like the idea of their spine ‘clicking’ or ‘cracking’ (this sound is made by a release of pressure from the gases in the joint capsule).

If this is the case, I have other techniques including activator, drop table technique and low level laser therapy (LLLT) or cold laser which research has shown to assist pain relief and improve healing. Most patients do not even feel any sensation when it is being used.

ACC recognises chiropractors as primary health care specialists when it comes to spinal care so you do not need a referral from a GP to seek treatment for a back or neck injury caused by accidental causes. In the event of an accident we can initiate a claim directly and if ACC accept your claim, treatment costs will be subsidised.

•From page 13At Sling Camp he was assigned

to the 3rd Battalion, leaving for France on May 28.

He was killed in action on July 5, aged 43. At an inquiry into his death L. R. Lilley, reported that “at Ploegsteert, when we were hold-ing the line I was behind Private Brown and a shell landed near him, instantly killing him.”

Brown’s body was initially bur-ied in the trenches but retrieved after the war and reburied in Mo-tor Car Corner Cemetery, Ypres. In New Zealand, he is remem-bered on the Malvern County and South Malvern war memorials. •Gunner Ralph Reader Coe

Ralph Reader Coe was born on March 26, 1878, at Irwell, to John and Elizabeth Coe.

Before enlisting he was a farmer on Banks Peninsula on the Le Lievre property in Gough’s Bay.

Coe was an ardent footballer and captain of the Akaroa team for two years including 1911 when Akaroa won the Peninsula Flag competition. He also represented the province on one of the West

Coast tours and was for many years a prominent member of the Irwell football team. He was a keen cricketer as well.

Coe enlisted on April 19, 1915, and was assigned to the Can-terbury Mounted Rifles, Sixth Reinforcements, and embarked for Suez on August 14.

He survived Gallipoli and during the reorganisation of troops for the Western Front was re-assigned to the Field Artillery. He was transferred to a French Mortar Battery on May 12 and then to the 11th Battery, 3rd New Zealand Brigade on June 20.

Coe was sent to hospital on November 15, 1916, having been unwell almost since leaving New Zealand. He was initially di-agnosed with gastritis and was evacuated to England on New Year’s Day, 1917.

After a couple of months in hos-pital at Brockenhurst he returned

to France in late March. However, barely two months later on May 14 he was again admitted to hospital and evacuated to England.

He was treated at the No 2 New Zealand general Hospital at Brock-enhurst, for cancer of the stomach. Later he was moved to the Walton-on-Thames Hospital where he died on June 20, 1917, aged 39.

One of his nurses was a cousin, Mary Ellen Coe, to whom he was engaged to be married.

He is buried at Brookwood  Mil-itary Cemetery and remembered on the Ellesmere County and Springston war memorials. There is also a memorial to him and his fiancé’s brother in the small church at Catworth, Huntingdon.

•Gunner Alexander McCaus-land

Alexander McCausland was born at Kimberly on December 30, 1892, to Charles and Eliza Mc-Causland.

Growing up, he was an active member of the Kimberley cricket and football clubs being regarded as one of the best athletes in the district.

He was farming on his father’s property before becoming one of the first men from Kimberley to enlist on February 3, 1915.

McCausland was assigned to the 5th Reinforcements, Canterbury Mounted Rifles and embarked on

June 13.At Mudros he was posted to the

1st Squadron, and saw six weeks’ active service on Gallipoli, being among the last to be evacuated.

During the reorganisation of forces in Egypt for the front in France he was transferred to the 3rd Battalion, New Zealand Field Artillery and left with them for France on April 14, 1916. Once in the field in France he was trans-ferred to the 13th Battery.

McCausland was wounded on September 7, during the Som-mes battles, with a gunshot to his arm. He was treated in France and returned to his unit on November 21.

Three weeks later he was ap-pointed cook but it appears that cooking could also be dangerous for on March 30 he injured his leg after slipping and catching it on a

hook.On June 1 he was wounded

again, this time a gunshot to his left thigh. The Artillery had been laying down a heavy barrage prior to the attack about to begin at Messines.

McCausland was sent to the 2nd Australian General Hospital at Wimereaux but his wound was serious enough that he was transferred to England. He was admitted to the 2nd New Zealand General Hospital at Walton-on-Thames on June 21.

However, he died on June 22, 1917, aged 24, of septic shock and gangrene of his left foot.

McCausland is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery and remembered on The Malvern County War Memorial.

Check fire safety rules before you burnProperty owners are being urged to comply with the conditions in place in Selwyn during an open fire season. Volunteer firefighters have recently been busy containing escaped fires that were not being supervised when strong North West winds were blowing.

An open fire season means that fires can be lit outdoors in rural areas without a permit (except for hill and high country areas where there is a permanent restricted fire season) as long as the person lighting the fire complies with the safe burning guidelines below. Full responsibility lies with the person lighting the fire and landowners must take precautions to avoid damage and fire suppression costs.

No person may light a fire in the open air under any of the following conditions:

· Where the location, wind, or other conditions cause or are likely to cause the fire to become a danger to any person or property; or out of control or spread beyond the limits of the property on which it is lit

· Within 10 metres of any part of a building, tree, hedge, fence or other combustible material

· Close to a high voltage transmission line · Without continuous supervision being maintained at all times · Without a means of fire suppression being available.

Additionally, any person lighting a fire in the open air must;

· Have the permission of the landowner to light the fire · Ensure all other permits such as Resource Consents, DOC or other relevant permissions are in place before burning

· Check the daily and long range weather forecast prior to lighting. Consider wind direction and speed or frontal change. Every situation is different however no fire should be lit where the wind is moderate or predicted to be moderate (more than 20kph).

Please visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/fire for more information. In residential areas, outdoor fires are not permitted at any time under ECAN air rules, except for gas barbeques.

Statistics NZ is running an online discussion forum as part of a process to ensure the census is relevant for New Zealand. Selwyn communities can provide a unique point of view and Statistics NZ would like you to share your views. In developing the census a balance will need to be considered between making changes to better reflect New Zealand today and being able compare data over time. The length and complexity of the Census questionnaire also needs to be considered. The online discussion forum is live until 10 June. You can also make formal submissions from 18 May-30 June. Internet access and mobile phone coverage surveyThe Council is carrying out a survey to identify which areas are affected by problems with internet services and mobile phone blackspots. Selwyn residents, business owners, including farm owners, schools and emergency service providers are invited to participate in the survey.

The government recently announced that it is planning to extend ultra-fast broadband and continue funding rural broadband expansion as well as establish a new mobile blackspot fund.

The survey aims to gather information on problems so that the Council can consider if Selwyn is eligible to apply to the government for funding to improve internet services or mobile coverage, and put together an application if this is needed.

To complete the survey visit www.selwyn.govt.nz/haveyoursay. Survey forms are also available at Selwyn libraries or you can request to be sent a copy of the survey by phoning 347 2800 or 318 8338. The survey is open until Tuesday 26 May and takes 5-10 minutes to complete.

The Council has funding to help meet some of the costs of protecting heritage buildings and trees for the community’s benefit. This may include restoring, reinforcing and protecting heritage buildings, and other structures such as war memorials, sites and trees.

There is one funding round each year and $40,000 is available to

Heritage funding applications are now open.support projects by owners of heritage buildings or protected trees. Last year 13 grants were made. Recipients included Lakeside House, Racecourse Hill Homestead, Southbridge Hall, Darfield Stables, and heritage trees at Doyleston and Lincoln Union Church.

Priority is given to items listed in the Selwyn District Plan. The heritage fund can be used to pay for part of the cost of restoration or protection work, and applicants will also need to fund some of this cost from other sources. Funding cannot be used for routine maintenance, or for improvements which are of personal or commercial benefit.

Applications for funding close on Friday 26 June 2015. Applicants need to include at least two quotes from suitably qualified tradespeople.

Application forms are available from Council service centres and libraries and online at www.selwyn.govt.nz/heritagefund. For more information contact Jessica on 347 2974 or email [email protected]

Additionally, any person lighting a fire in the open air must;

Both tools can be accessed via www.statistics.govt.nz

Lincoln Badminton Club’s juniors have been flying the flag of the biggest club in Canterbury at tournaments in Aus-tralia and around New Zealand.

Last month the June Bevan Tourna-ment was held in Melbourne with two of the club’s most promising players lin-ing up.

The annual tournament is for under 17s and includes 12 teams from around Oceania. Included in the South Is-land team were Kira Selen and Caelan Thomas. The team placed a respectable eighth in the tournament.

Caelan and Kira also competed in the under-17 individual champion-ships, also in Melbourne. Caelan made it through to the third round and Kira the second.

The pair also competed in the South Island under-19s in Otago last weekend with Caelan losing in the second round and Kira in the quarter-finals.

They were joined by other Lincoln players, Jade Selen, Jordie Mundie who were both beaten quarter-finalists and Roberto Bray who made it to the sec-ond round.

Also from Lincoln, Manny Collins competed in the under-15 section and was runner up in the singles final.

The Lincoln club plays socially each Wednesday at the Lincoln Event centre from 6pm for primary age, 7pm for sec-ondary age and 8pm for adults.

BY KYLE KNOWLES

John Morrish, of Lincoln, has been awarded the New Zealand Badminton administrator of the year, the first Cantabrian to do so.

The Badminton Canterbury board chairman was presented the award at a function in Auck-land during the Sky City Open held last weekend.

He said he was chuffed to get the award after leading the organ-isation through some tough times and getting badminton back on track in Canterbury.

“Canterbury Badminton has been in the doldrums the last 10 years and I came back on to the board last year. It has been going downhill for 10 years so we employed Selwyn Maister to do a review and he identified the problems we had.

“So we developed a new strategic plan last year and to implement it we needed to do a restructure. Our general man-ager was stuck in the office and not getting around the schools promoting the sport. We changed that role and employed a coach-

ing and development manager.”Overseeing this new direction

for the sport in Canterbury is what Mr Morrish was awarded the prize for and said it was good recognition for the changes which had happened in Canterbury.

He said they had to take some drastic steps to get there and the sport is now back on course and has seen growth in the region for the first time in a long time.

He was nominated for the award by Badminton Canter-bury and was up against other administrators from around New Zealand.

The Lincoln farmer is also the club captain of the Lincoln Bad-minton Club where he has been in the role for more than 30 years.

He still plays the game himself and was able to enjoy some of the world-class badminton on show at the Sky City Open.

Come and listen to a talk about sugar and the impact of our current eating patterns on our health and that of our children. Our health is our biggest asset and we need to protect it. We are delighted to offer you the opportunity to hear a Wellington based registered clinical nutritionist speak about a topic she is passionate about and that you should be concerned about.

Delwyn MacKenzie holds undergraduate qualifications in nutrition from Otago University, a Post-graduate Diploma of Science in Nutritional Science and a Master of Science Degree in human nutrition from Massey University. She is currently studying an Advanced Diploma of Natural and Nutritional Medicine through an Australian University.

Delwyn is a nutrition educator and wellness promoter who is passionate about changing peoples’ lives for the better. She

will discuss what sugar is and what it does in the body, as well as the benefits of following a lower carbohydrate eating plan for total wellness and weight management during two workshops being held at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday 30 May either from 9am-12 or from 1-4pm.

There is a lot of confusion and misinformation out there as to what we should be eating and many people simply give up because it is all too hard. Delwyn advocates the eating of delicious, nutritious food to re-programme the body to burn stored fats, maintain muscle mass and increase the metabolic rate. Delwyn believes that fatigue and sickness are not inevitable and that you can do something about it.

Priced at $20, the seminar is open to people of all ages who want to learn how to develop a healthier lifestyle.

DirectionsPreheat oven to 150 deg C. Heat oil in a large pot or one that can be transferred to oven. Brown the beef in batches until sides are sealed. Remove and set aside. Add bacon, onion, garlic, celery, onion and carrots, and cook for 5 minutes until softened. Add beef, mushrooms and water, rose-mary, wine, tomatoes and salt and pepper. Cover and place in oven for 1 hour. Add baby onions and continue to cook for 40 minutes, or until beef is tender. Just before serving, stir in chopped basil and parsley. Serve with creamy polenta.

GARDENING

Japanese maple – a tree for all seasons

WITH THE increase in house building, sections are getting smaller.

This limited space may reduce the number and size of plants we can grow on our property.

The one plant that any garden, regardless of size, should not be without is a japanese maple as there is a variety to suit all situations and locations.

Japanese maples are unusual in the world of trees in being so diverse in their form. This is due to natural variation and centuries of selection by horticulturalists.

The term ‘japanese maple’ usually refers to specimens

belonging to the Acer palmatum group, but can sometimes refer to other maples from Japan and Korea. A. palmatum covers a large geographical area from Japan, Korea, eastern Mongolia and even eastern Russia.

In their natural habitat, these trees can reach 15m in height, but as cultivars in a garden situation they are considered a small tree or shrub, with selected cultivars as small as 30cm tall.

This is great for gardeners as there is sure to be one or more of the hundreds of varieties of Japanese maple that will fit perfectly into any spare gap we may have.

Being deciduous, japanese maples are a tree for all seasons. Many of the cultivars have brilliant spring growth in a range of colours from bright pinks and reds to yellows and greens. Others have been selected for their consistent summer colour, but all

come into their own in the autumn.

No one can fail to notice the autumn colour of japanese maples, often glowing in rainbow-like shades from March into May. Winter shows off the shape of the trees to their best, giving an oriental feel to the garden.

The pure species japanese maple that has no cultivar name is usually green in colour with larger leaves. This is a great tree on its own, often having intense autumn colours.

It can be picked up relatively cheaply or easily grown from seed. Growing from seed is great fun and the variation in seedlings makes it even more interesting as you do not know what you are going to get.

The cultivars are often grafted to maintain uniformity as growing from cuttings can be slow and problematic.

Dylan Norfield discusses the merits of this versatile group of plants

GARDENING

Cultivation• Love moisture-retentive, free-draining soil. Add

plenty of organic matter, but on clay soil, add some extra grit for drainage. Like to be well watered in

summer, but not waterlogged in winter. • Ideal location is partial shade, with moist,

organic soil; however, will tolerate a wide range of conditions. The more sun or wind they receive, the

more watering they will need in the summer.• Keep pruning to a minimum, but light tip-pruning

on new growth can be carried out at any time of the year.

1. The divided foliage of A. palmatum var. dissectum gives it a feathery look. It forms a mound-type shape and can vary from 1m to 3m. Often considered a good choice for growing in pots or next to water features and ponds.

2. A. palmatum ‘Linearilobum’ (Linearilobum Group) has hand-like foliage with long, thin fingers. Selections have been made in a range of colours and plant sizes with various fineness of foliage.

3. A. palmatum ‘Shishigashira’, or lion’s head maple, is a dwarf variety. The plants are dense and compact when young, but can grow larger over time. 4. A. palmatum ‘Butterfly’– you either love or hate this one, but it has its place in the garden. The foliage is variegated in different shades of yellow, pink, white or red, giving a spectacular display. Autumn colours are often in many different shades on the same leaf.

5. A. palmatum ‘Fireglow’ is often referred to being a part of the ‘Atropurpureum Group’, which covers all the larger leaf maples with red foliage. These have been very popular in horticulture for centuries, resulting in a huge number of selections for foliage and tree shape and varying depths of shading.

GOOD GARDEN hygiene is very important.

Before you start pruning, steri-lise your gear.

Remember to use a prune dress-ing on larger cuts. Bush and shrub roses:

Take out any dead or weak wood, try to keep four to six of the newer canes. Cut them back short for show blooms, longer for garden display.

Remove the older canes back to the crown. Roses are very forgiv-ing plants, if you make a mistake they soon bounce back.Climbers:

Take out the old and spent canes, tie down up to six aside of the one year old canes or the best of the older canes. Cut out the rest. Ramblers:

Most ramblers can be pruned straight after summer flowering. Take out all the old flowering canes and leave all the young shoots coming from lower down.

After pruning, clean up all the dead leaves and prunings and burn them, or put them out with your rubbish.

Do not put them in your com-post as the leaves may be carrying

fungus spores which could spread back to your garden when you use the compost.

Spray your roses and the ground around them with a good copper spray, then spray three or four days later with winter oil.

Pruning tips for winter

HYGIENE: Remember to sterilise your tools before pruning.

autumn activitiesWhat a mixed bag of weather we have had already! Rain, frosts, sun, mild mornings and warm days. Before the winter kicks in it is important to prepare your gardens and get a few tasks completed before the weather takes a turn for the worse. The fallen leaves from the trees can be rather annoying at this time of the year so it is important to clean them up before they become problematic. Try adding them into your garden as compost. Clear out gutters – leaves and weeds are the main culprits for blocking up the gutters. Clean these regularly to reduce the chances of them overflowing when the winter rains come. Get your bulbs planted. There is still time to plant spring bulbs now. Head to your local garden centre to see what varieties are available. Add bark or stones. Adding a decent layer of bark or stones to your garden will help to protect the plants’ roots from the winter frosts, as well as keeping those weeds down.

events, was due to be held over a fortnight next year in MarchHowever, a lack of both volun-teers and expressions of interest from groups wishing to be involved means it has now been canned. It has been run every two years since 2007, including in 2011 short-ly after the February earthquake. In

2008 it won the Sensational Selwyn award for community impact.Celebrating Selwyn chairwoman Wendy Rockhouse said organisers have had to accept they didn’t have the manpower to try and get more groups registered in time to produce promo-tional material ahead of the event.“It was terribly disappointing for

all of us, especially myself,” Mrs Rockhouse said.“I think Celebrating Selwyn has a place in the calendar because there is so much diversity out here but it will need to have people that are prepared to work at it. I have put in hundreds of hours myself - and you need to. • Turn to page 2

Selwyn Times talks to experts about paint, colours and how best to splash it around.

Christchurch local Sue Campbell has nine years as an interior designer and is a colour consultant for Dulux. We asked her a few questions with

dining rooms in mind. What colour trends do you see taking shape in 2015?

Colour use is on the increase, there’s no doubt about that. We’re seeing earthy neutrals and

“If your washing won’t dry on the line, then don’t paint.

If it’s too humid or too cold, then paint won’t cure”COLOUR ME BEAUTIFUL

olive greens. Whites and greyed o neutrals are still popular, but accompanied by colour blocks and geometric patterns. People are also using more than one accent colour to create a more vibrant and playful interior, with warm metallics such as bronze, copper and gold becoming popular.

How important is the right colour scheme when it comes to creating a great

eating environment?Choosing colours is an essential part of creating the right mood. You need to decide whether you want a sociable, lively feel or a dramatic moody space, and choose colours accordingly.

Should we di erentiate between our kitchen and dining areas, or continue colours throughout?

It really depends on the home. It is always good to have some continuity throughoutthe house, but a di erent colour scheme in a dining room can help make it a separatespace and create a new mood.

How does lighting a ect colour choice? e paint colour you love in the shop can look quite di erent in your living room. etype of lighting you have, and even the time of day can completely change the way acolour looks. e best way to check it out is to paint two coats on an A3 card and usethem around the room at di erent times of the day.

What’s the biggest mistake you can make with colour choice?

Playing it safe. Don’t be afraid to use some colour, and let your personality shine through. A colour consultant or interior designer can help you pull your scheme together if you are unsure.

PAINTING TIP

– Bevan TuttyDulux training manager

SOMETHING NEW

There’s a new addition to the painter’s toolbox. With smartphones seldom out of arm’s length, it’s little surprise

there is now an app to help choose the right colours for your home. “The new Dulux Colour iPhone app provides inspiration if you need it – you can visualise any colour or match them in

your home setting. It shows you what colours are trending and you can find the Dulux match to any colour you like at a friend’s or anywhere. We’ve also completely refreshed our range and added lots of features simply to make it easier to choose a colour for your home,” says Dulux in-house colour expert Louise McKenzie-Smith.

You are guaranteed to talk to LOCAL industry professionals with years of experience rather than a sales person trained over night drafted into the industry with limited knowledge and zero idea on building costs working off a pre prepared song sheet. A sad but true statement in many cases.

• Honesty, integrity, experience and common sense always outweighs “smoke and mirrors” and unfortunately common sense is not that common in many cases. Building commodity prices ARE stable, and I will personally guarantee that.

The management team of Onyx Homes are quite simply some of

the best and most experienced people in the industry. It’s through

this experience that Onyx Homes wants to bring to their customers

a better standard of home that is often less than the standard-plan-

built homes of their competitors. Onyx believe that everyone is

unique, so why settle for a standard-plan-home when you can have

a purpose-designed plan to suit exactly your lifestyle and for less

than a standard plan? A perfect fit!

This is testament to our customers who have been amazed at the

savings with Onyx, but also hadn’t realised their budget would

allow for a such quality spec and design.

Numerous decisions are part of building a new home, from choosing a plan that suit your needs and section’s size and

position through to nding a building company that will guide you through the stages of the build so the outcome is the home of your desire.

Artisan Homes has immense experience in all kinds of builds, from the more a ordable family home to executive superior homes. ey build on any site: at, hill, suburb or out in the country. eir aim is to provide superior quality homes with attention to detail that ful ls a client’s expectations and dreams.

“We like to look a er our customers regardless of the size of the job,” says owner Rob Jones.

CRAFTING YOUR NEW HOME

A new home is a big investment so it is important to get it right especially when starting with a bare piece of dirt.

“We can deliver homes for a reasonable price. Customers o en remark on the value for money they’ve received,” explains Rob. “Our clients do not pay a massive deposit upfront. Instead, we have a system of small regular progress payments that are tied to the actual work completed on-site and we give a 10-year Master Builder’s Guarantee at the end. is gives our customers peace of mind.”

Established 11 years ago, Artisan Homes is a recognised name in Canterbury. Rob, who has lived in Selwyn for 25 years, is a quali ed licensed building practitioner with loads of experience in the building industry. Artisan Homes are also registered Master Builders.

“I began my carpentry apprenticeship when I was 16 years old. My father was a cra sman carpenter who had a wider range

of skills such as pitching a roof or hanging a house lot of doors. Today, many parts of a house arrive on-site pre-made. Having the knowledge of how it all ts together gives me a greater understanding of a job,” says Rob.

eir attention to detail and quality workmanship can be seen at Artisan Homes’ show home at 5 Broomleigh Drive, in Rolleston’s Faringdon estate. is is a must-see with its superior interior nish, thoughtful design and imaginative tranquil landscaping.

While visiting Artisan Homes’ show home, ask to see their impressive range of plans which clients can choose or base a design on. ese can also be seen in high resolution, digital at www.artisanhomes.co.nz. Rob

and his team will also work with a client to produce their own unique plan.

Artisan Homes’ show home is open everyday: 8.30am to 5pm, Monday to ursday; Friday by appointment; and 12pm to 4pm on Saturday and Sunday. Phone Rob on 374 9172 or 021 324 876 or email [email protected].

Weedons Dragons win –p14, p15BY TOM DOUDNEYOne of the district’s major promo-tional events will not go ahead next year but an organiser says she is hopeful this is not the end.The biennial Celebrating Selwyn, which promotes local exhibitions, art studios, restaurants, gardens and

events, was due to be held over a fortnight next year in MarchHowever, a lack of both volun-teers and expressions of interest from groups wishing to be involved means it has now been canned.
