Tips for writing A PERSONAL PROFILE

1. Read the article "Hearts and Guts: Writing the Personal Profile" by SUSAN AGER.

2. Visit websites for major corporations and for the type of business you might actually like to work for someday to see if you can find personal profiles of their executives.

After reading through a number of these, decide what you like and don't like about them. Try to think about it from a potential employer’s point of view. Who is your bio written for?

Use first names and personal pronouns.

Write conversationally and tell a good story.

Brag a little, but brag about the pertinent stuff.

Use pull quotes.

Don’t be afraid to make yourself sound human (use humor.)

Experiential…your design philosophy based on recent training

When I walked into my Electronic Media class on the first day I thought there were set rules to learn. If you didn’t know them, you weren’t going to be able to succeed. Now, after being through the course, I realize this is only half true. While there are certain ways to do things and techniques to know, there are so many different ways to go about achieving each design goal. The only way to progress as an artist is to actually explore and practice. The class opened the door to what I can do with visual communication.

Even out of class I am now always playing with my own photographs, putting filters on them, sharpening them etc. The more I learn, the more rewarding it becomes to me. There’s always room for progression and there will always be a new trick to learn.

I am currently working with SapientNitro and getting a lot of experience in the field of advertising. It is inspiring being at the agency and seeing some of the work the creatives do here. It makes me analyze my own work more critically and pushes me to become better. I am currently working to illustrate a children’s book which will hopefully be finished by Christmas...Although at times it can become tedious, I enjoy thinking about new ways to execute an image, add line variation, shadow, highlights, etc. With each piece I do I become more confident in my abilities.

A Non-Art Major…

Within my previous work experience at the university library, I was always given the design and had to work on making it work for what the client wanted, simply by default--I was the one techie most able to pull it off quickly. In my design classes, however, I became the client. This proved to be more challenging than I originally anticipated. I am not used to designing for myself, without limits; I am not used to calling myself a designer. To my surprise, I began to feel comfortable referring to myself as an artist. Even though I do not have a formal education in art, I am visually able to recognize artistic elements and understand their impact on the work. I seem to have a natural sensitivity and my coursework began to build a foundation under that talent…

Reflective…revealing your feelings about art

Despite countless hours spent in front of a glowing computer monitor, I feel powerless. Electronic design is not fathomable, it is not material. I cannot carry it in my hand. It is meant to be displayed on a monitor whereas art is meant to be held and experienced. And although one can argue the value of desktop design when it comes to marketing, packaging, shipping, etc. I still feel that it is neither palpable nor practical should all technology disintegrate in an apocalyptic inferno of sorts. I feel most at ease when I can control the tool with which I create. On screen, you cannot not see what I see, or feel what I feel as when looking at an art piece.

I am not simply a graphic designer. I am an artist. I make mistakes of course, like everyone else. But unlike everyone else, I sketch with paper and pencil; I jot down ideas, inspiration. I do not think on a computer screen. I will be the master of my own design.

Still, I feel quite accomplished in the electronic arts, because recently my digital work has proven just as strong as my fine art. The experience I get from looking at a finished piece of work has not suffered with the medium. This I feel, is partly due to my aesthetic but more than that, it has to do with my newly gained sense of control over the software technology, and I owe that to my training at University of Miami.

Throughout this body of work I have tried to instill my painterly, slightly crafty aesthetic into all the digital work that I have done. My graphic design portfolio is contained on a black, slender, unassuming USB key. Perhaps, this is the beauty of graphics; that everything can be contained, that an inconspicuous piece of metal and plastic can hold all the jewels of my creativity even if it can never hope to express all that I have learned from my coursework in art.
