forests over 1000m
Potted in small bark under
50% shade. Watered three
times a week in summer and
once a fortnight in winter.
Fertilized three weeks with
high nitrogen and one week

and nil in winter.

trees but each species must have
rough bark. Variety of humid
habitats –mangroves, coastal
rainforests, paperbark swamps,

Cultivation: On slab/bark, good
air, watered copiously in summer,
much less in winter, fertilized
with low nitrogen weekly in
summer, nil in winter, under 50%
shade.

Central New South Wales –
Cooktown to Newcastle.
Pendulous epiphyte; grows
on a variety of trees along
streams and watercourses,
near swamps. Likes a moist,
humid, airy habitat. Prefers
a shady site.
Easy to grow on cork or
Callistemon. Water well in
summer and sparingly in
winter. Fertilize with low
nitrogen during warmer
weather. Grown in bush
house in a shady location.
Epidendrum imatophyllum
Widespread from Mexico to
Peru and Brazil, also in
Trinidad
Grows as an erect terrestrial
herb. This lowland species
is associated with ants and
their nests and the ant nests
provide high nitrogen to the
plant.
Cultivation: Warm
conditions with high
nitrogen fertilizer and plenty
of water in the summer and
less in the winter. Good
drainage is preferred.

once a week in winter.
Fertilized with low nitrogen
fertilizer.

North west Himalaya, the
Deccan, North East India,
Nepal, Myanmar
Epiphyte to an altitude of
1000m; grows in broad
leafed evergreen forests on
limestone rocks and bushes
Grown on a mount and hung
high in the orchid house
under 50% shade Watered
daily in summer and much
less in winter. Low nitrogen
fertilizer.
