INTRODUCTION This report is an attempt to provide data series and a brief trend analysis of the major economic characteristics of SADC region for the Year 2018 based on GDP and Trade indicators for the period 2008 to 2018. Data was primarily submitted and updated by National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of SADC Member States. Data gaps were pooled from other sources including the African Statistical Yearbook 2019, UNIDO statistics database and in some cases, SADC estimates were used. GDP and GDP growth rates data were approved and recommended to Council during the 26 th SADC Statistics Committee Meeting session, 29-31 May 2019 in Swakopmund, Namibia. The core list of selected indicators for the region is presented in the attached tables 1 to 29 and corresponds to data submission as at end of June 2019. 2. GDP AND MANUFACTURING SADC region registered an estimated average growth rate of 1.8% in 2018 compared to 2.1% in 2017 as illustrated in Figure 1. The Manufacturing sector, identified as the prioritized key engine of growth to drive the industrialization process in SADC for the coming decades, grew by 4.3% in 2018 compared to 4.6% in 2017. The region`s overall growth has been increasing at a lower path since post global crisis in 2009 while the manufacturing sector has been experiencing higher growth rates post 2015. This sector has been performing better than other economic sectors in the region for the period 2014 - 2018 since the manufacturing sector growths have been higher than the overall growth for the region. At country-specific level (Table 3), Seychelles registered overall economic growth rate of 7.9% followed by Tanzania (7.0%) whilst Angola and Namibia registered negative growth for the second consecutive year respectively -1.1% and -0.1% in 2018. With regard to the Manufacturing sector, Zimbabwe and Tanzania recorded significant growth rates of 12.1% and 8.3% in 2018 whilst DRC manufacturing sector declined by 0.8%. The share of manufacturing sector to overall GDP for SADC region in 2018 stood at 11.9%,against 11.2% in 2017. However, the share of the manufacturing sector to overall GDP in SADC region has been declining marginally since 2009 from 13.1% to reach its lowest point to 10.9% in 2013. The Post 2013 period has shown a slight recovery of the sector for gradual increase in its share to the GDP increasing to about 11.9% in 2018. Figure 3 shows trend of nominal GDP per capita of SADC region for the period 2008-2018.

SADC SELECTED ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL INDICATORS, 2018

1. GDP and GDP growth rates data were approved and recommended to Council during the 26th SADC Statistics Committee Meeting session, 29-31 May 2019 in Swakopmund, Namibia.

GDP per capita stood at $2081 in 2018, representing a significant nominal increase of 0.7% compared to $2068 in 2017. Since 2008, GDP per capita increased from $1912 to reach its highest level of $2454 in 2011. At country level, Table 4 below shows Seychelles has the highest GDP per capita (US$ 16 348) estimate whilst Malawi has the lowest at US$ 410 in 2018. 3. TRADE Trade liberalization is one of the core elements of regional economic integration within the SADC region. In 2018, SADC Exports of Goods (Extra-SADC) stood at about $ 154 billion whilst Imports stood at $ 149 billion. Figure 4 illustrates trend in SADC Trade Balance for the period 2008-2018.

In 2018, intra-SADC Exports of Goods stood at about $ 37.3 billion whilst intra-SADC Imports stood at $ 35.3 billion. Figure 5 illustrates trend in intra SADC exports and imports for the period 2008 – 2018.

Merchandise trade among SADC Member States has steadily been on the increase since 2008 as depicted in Fig 5 above. Intra-SADC Exports as a percentage of Total Exports of Goods increased from 15.2% in 2008 to reach 19.5% in 2018 whilst that of Imports increased from 17.5% to 19.1% during the same period. It is also worth noting that intra SADC share to Total Trade has been increasing constantly but marginally. 4. DEMOGRAPHY The estimated population of the SADC region increased stands at 345.2 million in 2018, against 336.9 million in 2017 representing a 2.5% annual population growth rate. The largest population share in the region in 2018 was in DRC (26.6%) followed by South Africa (16.7%) and Tanzania (15.7%). Figure 6 shows the share of population across SADC Member States for 2018.

Life Expectancy at birth, as a measurement for quantity of life, is an indicator with high correlation to the health status of a population which invariably has bearings for contributing to the processes of growth and productivity in a country.

SADC region has been registering steady increase in life expectancy over the past decade that could be attributed to improved nutrition, sanitation and medical interventions, among others. Available data indicate that the average life expectancy of the region has increased from 52.3 years in 2008 to 61.0 years in 2018 (Figure 7). 6. YOUTH Table 26 and 27 provide updates on youth unemployment, 15-24 years in SADC region. There is contrasting results across Member States for 2017 where the following countries have youth unemployment less than 10%: DRC, Madagascar, Malawi and Tanzania whilst South Africa, Eswatini, Mozambique and Namibia has very high level of youth unemployment such as: 57.4%, 54.8%, 42.7% and 45.5% respectively. From a gender perspective, it is worth noting that female proportion in youth unemployment is highest in Mauritius (30.0%) followed by Botswana (20.0%) compared to male as of 2017. 5. WOMEN`S EMPOWERMENT The empowerment and autonomy of women and the improvement of their political, social, economic and health status is a highly important end in itself. In addition, it is essential for the achievement of sustainable development. Women’s empowerment contains a selection of 13 woman-specific empowerment indicators (Tables 28 -35) that allows empowerment to be compared across indicators and countries. Indicators represent three distinct empowerment dimensions – reproductive health and family planning; violence against girls and women; and socioeconomic empowerment. On reproductive health and family planning as at 2017, most women in the region have been at least treated by a skilled health personnel during their pregnancy. The antenatal care for most SADC Member States averages 90% (table 28). The same pattern follows for women percentage of deliveries attended by skilled health personnel trained in providing lifesaving obstetric care (table 29) with the exception of Angola having a low proportion of 46.9%. The region has experienced an improvement of maternal mortality ratio (MMR) and adolescent birth rate since 2010 to 2017 as they have been decreasing over the period (Table 30 & 31). However, contraceptive prevalence for women of reproductive age, 15 – 49 years, are still low and ranges from a minimum of 13.7% in Angola to a maximum of only 66.8% in Zimbabwe. The second dimension to measure women empowerment in society is violence against them. Table 34 illustrates some profiles of SADC Member States in this area as period average from 2005 – 2018. Based on available data, child marriage phenomenon is highly prevalent in

the region as the proportion is nearly 50.0% in Mozambique while others such as Eswatini, South Africa and Namibia have rate of less than 7.5%. Violence against women with intimate partner is also very high up to 50.7% in DRC. On enrollment in science and technical subject matter at tertiary level, the region has very low proportion of female participation, the highest being Zimbabwe in the order of 20.9%. Women`s representation in senior and middle management position also is not in parity to male as depicted in Table 35. Regarding financial inclusion and access to finance, there are contrasting results in the region as some Member States have high rate of access (Mauritius and Seychelles) while rest does not attain 50%. Finally, on mandatory maternity paid leave, all SADC Member States pay women 90 days in average with the exception of Eswatini that pays only 14 days. The highest number of paid maternity leave days is South Africa.
