President’s Message

Warmest greetings to all members,

How time flies as we move into the second quarter of 2018.Dato Dr. Kuldip Singh SohanPresident

This year is a little different than the past years. 2018 is the sesquicentennial anniversary for our beloved club and will be an interesting year for our Club. I see this year as one of commemorating our heritage, club rebuilding, and having some fun.

Penang Club has a long and event-filled history. We will be taking this as part of the sesquicentennial year of celebration with a grand bash on 30 August 2018 plus other fun-filled activities, as well as launching our own limited edition Penang Club 150 years anniversary single malt whisky.

Just to highlight, advertisements for prequalification of contractors for the Club refurbishment has been placed in Kwong Wah Yit Poh on Monday, 19 March 2018 and The Star Publication on Tuesday, 20 March 2018 respectively.

I would also like to express my heartfelt thanks to my fellow members who generously hosted the Chap Goh Meh Dinner & Dance which received a tremendous turnout and commendable feedback on both the food and service.

In appreciation of the hard work of our staff, my fellow Committee Members and I have approved their request for a 3 day 2 night trip to Phuket. Unlike the previous year’s trip to Medan where the Club was closed for 3 days, for this year’s trip the staff will be divided into 2 batches, with the first group leaving on 30 July 2018 and returning on 1 August 2018, and the second group leaving on 31 July 2018 and returning on 2 August 2018. With this arrangement, the Club will be closed for only 2 days with adequate staff to serve.

Happy Vaisakhi to all our Sikh Members and to all our Muslim members, Selamat Hari Raya, Maaf Zahir dan Batin.

Cheers and happy clubbing!

Best regardsDato’ Dr Kuldip Singh

Page 5: SELAMAT HARI RAYA - penangclub.net · Vaisakhi, Hari Raya Puasa and Parents' Day. Known as one of the major celebrations in Malaysia, Hari Raya Puasa marks the conclusion of Ramadan.

We also had a fantastic turnout during the Chap Goh Meh Dinner and Dance and exemplary feedback. I would like to express my immense gratitude for the support and hope to see your continued patronage.

Food has always been a crucial subject of discussion at the Club. The F&B Convenor and the Management are working closely with the caterer addressing the Members’ feedback and needs. Overall, the comments on food quality and presentation have been notable and we hope Members will continue to give their support to the caterer and the Club. Nonetheless, we do acknowledge that there is always room for improvement and rest assured we are not resting on our laurels as it is our highest priority to provide our guests with exceptional dining experience. We will be changing the menu by adding some new dishes and taking out slow-moving items. Please feel free to write your comments and suggestions in the Members’ Suggestion book at the Front Office.

We seek your kind cooperation to ensure the Club’s Rules in general are observed by Members and their Guests, with strict adherence to the dress codes applicable in different areas/outlets of the Club. There have been many instances where Members’ guests were not appropriately attired and had to be asked to dine at the Patio.

For further information on the Club events, please refer to the newsletter, website and Club noticeboards.

Last but not least, here’s wishing all caring and loving mummies Happy Mother’s Day and not forgetting all daddies Happy Father’s Day.

Take care and see you at the Club.

Cheers

Yours TrulyShekhar Nair

Wine of the Month

TEMPUS TWO SILVER SERIESHOUSE WINE

VINEYARDThe Tempus Two Silver Series imparts a level of style and sophistication to any dining occasion. Sourced from select vineyards within South Eastern Australia, this modern and contemporary wine is fresh, vibrant and fruit driven.

WINEMAKINGGrapes were harvested at night to retain optimum varietal character and freshness. They were then pressed immediately, the juice clarified followed by fermentation using an aromatic strain of yeast. All of these processes ensure the pure aromas and flavours of this grape variety remain.

TASTING NOTESA refreshing wine with vibrant natural acidity, citrus fruit flavours and a long satisfying finish.

VINEYARDThe Tempus Two Silver Series imparts a level of style and sophistication to any dining occasion. Sourced from select vineyards within South Eastern Australia, this modern and contemporary wine is fresh, vibrant and fruit driven.

WINEMAKINGThe fruit was crushed and de-stemmed to varying sizes and styles of red fermenters where the fruit was fermented on oak at cooler temperatures of 18-22oC for 5-7 days. Fermenting at cooler temperatures allows the fruit flavours to be nurtured and enables retention of varietal characteristics. Post fermentation the majority of the wine is matured in stainless steel tanks with a percentage of the wine transferred onto French and American Oak.

VINEYARDThe grapes were sourced from the Angove family’s vineyards and premium growers across South Australia. The final breaking of the drought resulted in plenty of rain that led to increased disease pressure. Fortunately, our experienced team identified and resolved issues early on.

WINEMAKINGThe grapes were picked at night to ensure they were as cool as possible. Crushed to modern rotary fermenters, they were macerated for 2 days before inoculation and fermentation. After 7 days, their skins were pressed off and went through the second malolactic fermentation.

VINEYARDThe grapes were sourced from the Angove family’s Nanya vineyards and premium growers in the Riverland region. This cooler year has been great for aromatic varietal expression. A warm early January period ensured fantastic flavour development and a relatively early harvest of grapes.

WINEMAKINGThe grapes were picked late at night to ensure they were as cool as possible, then transported to the winery and pressed using modern membrane tank presses. After cold settling, the clear juice was carefully racked to cooled fermentation tanks and inoculated with selected yeasts.

TASTING NOTESDistinctive herbaceous and tropical characters typical of ripened Sauvignon Blanc and delicate citrus notes from the Semillon. These flow seamlessly with crisp tropical fruit and a clean finish.

NEW BOOKS

East Indies by Ian BurnettThe 200 year struggle between the Portuguese Crown, the Dutch East India Company and the English East India Company for supremacy in the Eastern Seas.

In 1497, Vasco da Gama rounded the Cape of Good Hope, his small Portuguese eet reached India and became the rst Europeans to sail the Eastern Seas. Over the next 100 years the Portuguese spread their trading network in search of spices, sandalwood, silks, gold, silver, porcelains and other oriental goods. This trading network extended from Goa in India as far east as the Moluccas and Timor in Indonesia, and as far north as China and Japan.

In 1595 and 1601 respectively, the rst Dutch and English trading expeditions rounded the Cape of Good Hope and the trading monopoly of the Portuguese Crown was being challenged by the Dutch East India Company and then the English East India Company, the world’s rst joint stock and multi-national trading companies.

For the next 200 years, the struggle for trade supremacy between the Portuguese, the Dutch, and the English ranged across the Eastern Seas and in the settlements of Goa, Malacca, Ambon, Macao, Canton, Nagasaki, Batavia, Macassar, Johor and Singapore.

Until by the end of 19th century the Portuguese had almost vanished from the Eastern Seas, and the Dutch and the English East Indies Companies had been transformed from trading companies into colonial powers ruling vast territories in Indonesia, India and Malaya.
