From the Rector Much has happened since I last wrote to you, we have celebrated Christmas and New Year and by the time you read this we will be in to the second month of 2016. I can’t let this letter go by, even though it will be February when you receive it, without reporting on Christmas at St. Edmunds. It was a truly wonderful, spiritual occasion and it was great to see so many of you at some point during the festive season. The Nine Lessons and Carols by candlelight was most atmospheric and it was good to have members of the New Follies Choir join us and I take this opportunity of thanking them. On Christmas Eve there literally was ‘no room at the inn’ for our Crib service. The church door just kept opening, right up to the four o’clock start, and people just kept coming in, we were bursting at the seams. It was overwhelming to welcome so many people who had come to celebrate our Lord’s birthday and the children were amazing as they helped to act out the story. Following on only a few hours later was our Midnight Mass service, again it was so good to share this service with so many people. Often people have the intention of attending this service but the thought of leaving home to go out in to the dark night, when really your instinct is to get tucked up in bed can be a challenge, but it is worth it. If you’ve never been maybe next year you might give it a try. It is such an amazing way to

begin the celebrations of Christmas Day. This year the whole celebration was rounded off just perfectly for as we stepped out of the vestry door on our way home, at something like 1am, we were greeted by the most glorious full moon in a cloudless sky encircled by what looked like a rainbow. It was breath taking. I can’t promise that again next year as there will not be another full moon to coincide with Christmas Night until 2034. Less than nine hours later I was back in church again for our Christmas morning service, celebrating all over again with a different group of people and then home for my Christmas dinner beautifully cooked for me by husband – what more could I ask for? Thank you to all who in anyway made Christmas at St. Edmund’s so very special this year. If it was your first time at one of our services I do hope we will see you again sometime. I hope your new year has begun well and that you are managing to keep any resolutions you set. I pray that 2016 will bring Gods joy and peace to the world. Every Blessing Sarah

ST EDMUND’S WIVES

Our December meeting was a great success. We had lots of entries for our table decoration competition and Margaret was hard pushed to find a winner - well done everybody - and thanks for taking the trouble to make them at what is a busy time of year. Before she judged the entries, Margaret, with Tricia's help, demonstrated how to make a decoration from plants and leaves just in our gardens, no need to spend lots of money on flowers and other things. We followed this with mince pies and mulled wine and everyone had a really good evening.

Our February meeting is with Sherree Cox who will show us chair yoga. Some of our members go to her classes, but for the rest of us, we look forward to seeing all that this type of exercise has to offer.

The meeting is on 10 February - 8pm at Liberty Church on the Old School site. Hope to see lots of you there.

Multiple World and British Superbike race-winner Leon Haslam will return to the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship this season. The Derbyshire rider believes he has ‘unfinished business’ in BSB and he has signed with the JG Speedfit Kawasaki team for an assault on the title that he has narrowly missed out on in the past.

The 32-year-old from Smalley in Derbyshire returns to the championship with a renewed desire to lift the coveted title after finishing runner-up to multiple title-winners Ryuichi Kiyonari and Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne during the 2006 and 2008 seasons. Haslam will aim to add to his record of 16 race victories and a further 38 podiums in this year’s championship, which visits Brands Hatch in May, August and October.

Former British GT Championship-winning team Barwell Motorsport will field a brace of Lamborghini Huracans in the 2016 championship, which opens at Brands Hatch on 17 April. The line-up includes factory driver Fabio Babini and this year’s GT3 class runner-up Alexander Sims, who will share driving duties with 2015 title contender and former BTCC driver Liam Griffin. The second car will be raced by the race-winning partnership of Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen, who raced a BMW Z4 for the squad last season.

Refuse bags: There has been a price increase made by Sevenoaks District Council for Garden Refuse bags effective from 1st May. Garden refuse bags are available from the Parish Office in bundles of 25 for £13.50 or 12 for £7. Black sacks continue to be sold at £1.50 and recycling sacks at 50p per roll from the Parish office. They will also continue to be delivered to every household every 20 weeks by SDC. Residents can also apply to Sevenoaks District Council for a green wheelie bin for garden waste. The permit costs £43 per year. Black sacks and recycling bags are also available to buy from the library when the Parish Office is not open. Kent Highways: The Clerk continues to raise issues of concern with Kent Highways including pot holes, blocked drains, verge cutting, and street lighting on the A20. Councillors are pleased to see that much needed maintenance work has started on the central reservations.

Any highways matters can be reported direct to Kent Highways on 08458 247 800 or on the KCC web site at: http://webapps.kent.gov.uk/KCC.KHSFaultsGIS.Web.Sites.Public/ on the Fix My Street web site: https://www.fixmystreet.com/ or to the Clerk.
