- Seismic receiver for land are sometime called velocityphones since they are sensitive to the velocity at which
particles are displaced.- Seismic receiver for marine, called pressure sensitivephones.- Velocity phones are also known as:- geophones, jugs, seises, seisphones, seismometers, and sensors- Marine pressures transducers are also calledhydrophones, water phone, crystal phones, and pressurephones.

Land Cables- The total system of geophones and cable is
sometimes called the spread. The land cableusually consisting of 96 or 120 channels.
- They may be long continuous sections, but mostof the time are produced in short sections for
ease of handling and replacement of faultyportions.- Usually more geophone groups and cables areactually laid out, then the recorded channels areswitched at the instruments in rollalong fashion
and the cable/group combinations are movedfrom the end of the line to the front for later use in
recording.

- Main purpose of an array is to attenuatehorizontally traveling noise Ground Roll, andincrease the signal by boosting the almostvertically propagating seismic signal torecordable levels, the signal-to-random noise
ratio improved by N, where N is the number ofreceivers from one group. Multiple receiversare also advantageous in that if oneseismometer prove faulty, a trace will not be
completely killed.
