Amber Kuriakose is a living testimony to what happens when pain is ignored. After injuring her back in a fall during her early 20s, she largely dismissed the

intermittent pain she experienced a few times each year.

Several years later, the pain returned after giving birth to a 6-pound, 9-ounce baby. This time it was more intense. Not only did her back hurt, but the pain would shoot down her legs, making it painful to walk.

Kuriakose learned that bulging disks were causing her lower back pain. She successfully underwent lumbar laminectomy surgery at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital this summer and has seen a significant improvement while performing the activities of daily living.

Back and Joint Pain Is Common

Back pain is a common medical symptom, affecting eight out of 10 people at some point in their lives. While back pain can result from an injury, it is also due, in part, to aging. A sedentary lifestyle can intensify the pain.

Other areas of the body impacted by age and sedentary lifestyles are the joints. In a survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 30 percent of adults experienced some type of joint

pain in the preceding 30 days. Knee pain topped the list, followed by shoulder, finger and hip pain.

Treating pain with home remedies, like ice and over-the-counter pain medications, is designed for short-term, acute pain. Pain that persists for more than three months is considered chronic and should be discussed with a physician.

Prevention Is the Best Medicine

While injuries and aging are unavoidable, there are concrete ways to help prevent neck, back and joint pain. It starts with strong bones that support the body and its movements and allow the development of strong muscles.

Charlotte Alexander, M.D., a Memorial Hermann-affiliated orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and upper extremity, urges patients to monitor calcium and vitamin D intake.

“Many of our youth are not drinking milk, but prefer sodas which deplete calcium,” said Dr. Alexander. “As a consequence, young people may not reach peak bone mass that is achieved in the 20s and 30s and they are at risk of developing osteoporosis at an earlier age.”

In addition to strong bones, Wayne Alani, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest, provides additional advice to help avoid neck, back and joint pain.

“The main thing is to stay in good shape by moving and keeping the weight off,” said Dr. Alani. “The less weight you carry, the less joint degeneration. When you’re active, the joints are more flexible.”

For individuals who experience pain while exercising, Dr. Alani suggests working with an athletic trainer provided a primary care physician or orthopedic surgeon has confirmed the absence of degenerative arthritis.

Moving Beyond the Pain

When more conservative treatments such as medication and physical therapy fail to relieve pain, surgery may be recommended.

Kuriakose knew she needed more aggressive treatment when numbness accompanied the debilitating pain. A visit with a neurologist led her to Ajay Bindal, M.D., a neurosurgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest. He performed her laminectomy, a minimally invasive surgery that removed part of a protruding disk. As a result, this provided space for the nerve.

The 28-year-old Kuriakose is now on the mend and said, “I feel 100 times better. I can walk without the shooting pain.”

Kuriakose credits a pre-surgery educational program at Memorial Hermann Southwest, called Spine Camp, with alleviating her fears about the surgery. Spine Camp is an innovative patient rehabilitation and recovery program designed for individuals who have undergone thoracic, cervical or lumbar surgery. In addition to the early education component, it includes proven surgical techniques and progressive postoperative mobilization to help participants return to an active lifestyle more quickly than through traditional rehabilitation.

“Spine Camp familiarizes the patient with the facility, staff and postoperative care,” said Dr. Bindal. “As a result, patient anxiety is lowered and satisfaction is elevated.”

Memorial Hermann Southwest also provides pre-surgery education and post-surgery support for patients undergoing total knee and hip replacements as part of its Total Joint Replacement program.

According to Memorial Hermann-affiliated orthopedic surgeon Derek Jones, M.D., “Having a nursing and physical therapy

staff focused on these needs leads to better care for total joint replacement patients.”

Among the patients served are those who undergo minimally invasive hip replacement surgery at Memorial Hermann Southwest. Unlike traditional hip replacement surgery where muscles are cut that connect the thigh and hip bones, the minimally invasive hip replacement surgery requires only one or two small incisions.

“As a result, patients have fewer restrictions after surgery,” said Wayne Alani, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon affiliated with Memorial Hermann Southwest. “They can move, bend and bear full weight on their hips immediately.”

W. Lin Jones, M.D., also a Memorial Hermann-affiliated orthopedic surgeon and father and medical partner to Derek, founded the Total Joint Replacement program in 2004. He is delighted that patient satisfaction scores for the program are consistently in the 99th percentile.

Dance is a great way to get your body moving and to start enjoying the physical, emotional, mental and medical benefits that exercise brings. Sienna Dance is

celebrating the New Year by offering an even wider range of classes including Boys Hip-Hop, Girls Hip-Hop, Ballet, Pointe, Tap, and Jazz. All dance classes are held in Sienna Plantation at the Brushy Lake Fitness Center and are appropriate for students from 2 to 14 years of age. Registration for the spring season opens Monday, January 7, 2013.

Sienna Dance produces two shows throughout the year: the Christmas Show and the Recital Show. The Christmas

Show allows students to celebrate the spirit of Christmas through dance. As the students perform to their favorite Christmas songs, the room is filled with Christmas cheer. This show also prepares dancers for our largest production of the year, the Recital Show.

The Recital Show is held at the beautiful Stafford Centre each May. It allows dancers to really shine and show off all the skills they have learned throughout the year. All dancers are in full glitz costumes with stage lights and backdrop for their performance. This show is lots of fun and a great showcase for the students' personalities. spots at the college of their choice. Even though they knew competition would be fierce, because they have competed and won; or competed, lost, worked hard and won the next time; or competed and realized winning or losing isn’t everything; it’s about the

journey along the way, the life lessons learned through dance ring true every year. ■

spring session are eligible to participate in the Recital Show. Registration opens January 7, 2013.

Sienna Dance also introduces interested students to the world of competitive dance. It’s such a joy to see them grow from dancing in the small, sheltered environment of the dance room to competing on a large stage at competitions like Starbound, Power Dance and Show Stopper. The competitions in which Sienna Dance competes are all family friendly and every child’s courage to get up on stage is rewarded with a prize. We only participate in local competitions, never traveling further than Galveston, so no overnight stays are required.

“I signed my daughter up for classes because I wanted her to get a little extra exercise,” says one happy parent, “the boost in her self confidence was a very pleasant additional benefit.” That’s a sentiment shared by many parents and my own experience. The dance stage is where I learned that it was okay to go for my dreams.

Many children say that it was the growth in confidence, showmanship and self-esteem gained on the dance floor that gave them the courage to compete for a seat on the student council, or the top prize at the science fair, or one of the few available THE SPEECH AND LEARNING CENTER, L.L.P.

It’s a new year and I’m over 60. What are some healthy New Year Resolutions to focus on?

Surveys show that 60% of people give up on their resolutions by July. However, those who make resolutions are more likely to succeed in a behavior change than those

who do not. It is important to be specific in terms of your health care goals, and then outline a

sustainable strategy. Also, do not hesitate to review and revise strategies and methods that are not working for you. As we get older, the adage “one size fits all” becomes less true.

A good place to start would be to review chronic conditions you have, and how good you have been about following your doctor’s recommendations. Often, there is room for improvement.

Next, review your family history for evidence of diseases that might have a genetic predisposition and assess whether there are measures you could take to reduce your own risk.

Third, since early prevention is always a good strategy, make sure you are up to date on your screenings like mammograms and colonoscopies. Also update your immunizations like shingles (very important), tetanus, and pneumonia.

Along with general considerations, which apply regardless of age, like healthy eating, sleeping and exercise habits, the new year is a good time to decide to laugh more, stress less, and invest in positive relationships. Life happens, and doubtless each year will bring its own challenges. But we can resolve to come out on top regardless. Happy New Year!

Which of the following increases your risk of heart disease?

A. Smoking B. Sleep apnea C. Depression D. All of the above

The answer is D. Some heart disease risks, such as smoking, are quite commonly known, but did you know that diabetes, sleep apnea

or depression could also raise your risk of a heart attack? Read on to learn some surprising heart disease risk factors and tips to lower your risk.

Diabetes. Diabetics run twice the risk of having heart disease or a stroke as non-diabetics. In fact, diabetics without a previous heart attack have the same future risk as non-diabetics with history of a heart attack! “People with diabetes or prediabetes have above normal blood glucose (sugar) levels,” says B. Keith Ellis, M.D., board

certified interventional cardiologist on staff at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. “Over time, high blood glucose damages nerves and blood vessels, resulting in vascular disease. It’s important to carefully monitor your blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and work with your doctor to keep them under control.”

Kesavan Shan, M.D., board certified diagnostic cardiologist also on staff, further advises, “If you have prediabetes, you can lower your risk of adult-onset diabetes 60%

by losing 7% of body weight (15 lbs. in a 200 lb. patient) and exercising at least 30 minutes daily, five days a week.”

Poor sleep. Sleep apnea is a disorder that affects at least 12 million Americans, typified by insomnia, snoring and daytime fatigue. Most sufferers have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), where tissues in the throat collapse and obstruct the airway, causing blood oxygen levels to drop. The sleeper awakes enough to cough or gasp for air, then falls asleep again with the cycle repeating throughout the night. “Sleep apnea puts extra stress on the circulation and raises the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, heart failure and diabetes,” says Dr. Shan. Sleep apnea is associated with obesity, chronic nasal congestion, large tonsils or other airway blockages. A sleep study is used to diagnose the condition.

Mental health. Depression and stress can also raise the risk of heart disease. Dr. Ellis adds, “in fact, a study of 63,000 women found that those with depression were 50% more likely to die of heart disease than women without the condition, even when other risk factors were taken into account. To combat depression and stress, experts suggest exercise, turning to friends and family, relaxation techniques and seeking profess ional he lp, i f necessary.” ■

Catalyst RestaurantCatalyst Restaurant is a franchise partner with Rais-

ing Cane’s Chicken Fingers, a quick service restau-rant concept focused on fresh, never frozen chicken finger meals.

We chose Town Square Office Suites because i t ’s an affordable space where we can perform all the back office work that’s

necessary to effectively run our business but difficult to do inside a busy restaurant. The flexible lease terms and other services offered by the Town Square Office Suites' staff fit our needs.

The on-site meeting spaces allow us to host on-going development sessions for our crew members without interrupting normal business operations at our restaurant locations. ■

Visit www.raisingcanes.com for more information or to find a restaurant near you or call (281) 566-2526.

Town Square office SuiTeS BuSineSS Profile of The MonThPreventing eye Strain

If you’re like millions of other Americans, 2013 started with the addition of a tablet, e-reader, Smartphone, or laptop to your arsenal of electronic devices. As people log in ever increasing amounts of screen time, following a few tips to prevent eye strain will keep your eyes healthy and strong.

Every twenty minutes or so, look away from the screen at an object that is at least 20 feet away. Changing the focal length of your eyes helps relieve fatigue.

Briskly rub your palms together to warm them up. Lightly cup heated palms over your eyes for about a minute while breathing deeply and relaxing. The warmth helps sooth tired eyes.

The average person blinks about twelve times per minute. When using an electronic device, the number of blinks decreases to about five times per minute which can lead to dry eyes. If your eyes are feeling tired, blink 10 to 20 times in a row to moisten them.

Stop by the Sienna Plantation office of Eye Connection located at 8880 Highway 6 or call (281) 778-2020 for more information on eye care or to schedule an eye exam. You will receive special savings on eyewear and eye care products. ■
