SEGURO – YOUR AFFORDABLE SOLUTION TO PROTECT YOUR VALUABLES! INTRODUCTION

In order to combat the problem of the number of thefts, particularly petty thefts that occur

in New Zealand, Seguro was created. This is a problem that affects many people right across

New Zealand and Seguro being a small, inconspicuous tracking device that can be easily

attached to one’s valuables, improves the chances of relocating the stolen or lost item.

Seguro has a corresponding downloadable application that allows real-time tracking of the

item(s) on any smartphone or computer.

3. BUSINESS SECTION

3.1 Vision

To empower all individuals with an affordable, user-friendly system of locating their stolen

or lost items at anytime, anywhere.

3.2 Industry Analysis: Security Technology Industry

Industry: Security Technology Industry. This industry comprises of security devices that also

have a technological facet incorporated.

Force: High/Low: Justification:

Buyer power: Low Customers have limited choices of whom to buy

from. There are only a few devices and

corresponding applications currently existing in

New Zealand that provide the same/similar

information. Most of the existing devices

provide tracking for larger, more expensive

items such as cars, boats and other major assets.

(trackit, 2014)

Supplier power: Low We have lots of choice about whom to buy

from. There are many suppliers that provide the

parts required to create the device at affordable

prices. (AlibabaGroup, 1999-2014) There are

numerous software development firms that

could be used to code the corresponding

application. (indexNZ)

Threat of new entrants: High It is fairly easy for new customers to enter the

industry. All that is required is for one to obtain

the parts to create the device and find a suitable

software development firm to code the

application.

Threat of substitutes: Low One substitute is for people to always keep their

items in sight. Although, this does not seem like

a very plausible option. Alternatively, people

could opt to insure all their contents, but this is

not a very cost effective choice for those that

cannot afford extensive insurance policies.

(State Contents Insurance, 2014)

Rivalry among existing

competitors:

Low There are few devices and applications that

provide the same/similar information in New

Zealand. Therefore, the rivalry is low.

Overall attractiveness of the industry: Although there are many suppliers, there are very

few devices and applications currently existing in New Zealand that provide individuals with

the ability to locate their smaller valuable items. Therefore the industry is attractive.

3.3 Customers and Their Needs

Students are regularly the victims of petty theft. In particular, students from other parts of

the country and International students are often more at risk. This could be due to being in

a new, crowded environment, where it is difficult to keep track of all your belongings. Petty

theft is viewed as one of the key crimes students need to be aware of when studying in New

Zealand. (Center for Global Education, 2013) Students often cannot afford extensive

insurance policies and are placed in a real predicament if their valuables are lost or stolen.

Thus, they need an easy and convenient way to monitor where their items are if they are

going to leave their items briefly unattended to go to the bathroom, print off assignments,

or perform other such activities.

3.4 The Product and Service

Seguro is an affordable, inconspicuous tracking device that can be used on various items.

The device comes in many sizes, shapes and attachable options depending on what’s best

suited to the item to be tracked. The corresponding application provides real-time tracking

in a user-friendly manner. Tracking can be done using any smartphone or computer,

through Bluetooth or WIFI. The application provides regular notifications of the item’s

location and is able to observe all devices placed on different items at any time. Conversely,

if you have an item with the tracker attached, but cannot find your cell phone, you can push

the call button on the device and your cell phone will ring.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners

Suppliers are people/companies that provide our business with the raw materials required

to create the final product. Potential suppliers include, companies that supply us with the

materials required to make the device, such as batteries as well as companies that provide

us with computers and other resources for monitoring the data collected from the GPS

devices. Another supplier could be the company that provides our business with Intellectual

Property rights to protect our ideas as we develop our device and application, such as JAVA.

Partners refer to people/companies that our business has an alliance with that we can both

profit from. For our business two partners are the Apple App Store and Google PlayStore as

they aid our business in the promotion and selling of the product, whilst obtaining some

monetary benefit.

3.6 Strategy: Cost Leadership

Seguro focuses on a broad market as the product is aimed at helping all individuals to locate

their items. (However, the product does have a target market of students in New Zealand).

Seguro is a product that is intended to be affordable for everyone and as there are minimal

competitors in New Zealand, we are able to offer economical purchase options.

The overall strategy is therefore Cost Leadership.

3.7 Value Chain Activity: Make the Product

The most important value chain activity for this business is make the product.

As Seguro essentially combines the use of two products (tracking device and corresponding

application), successfully making the product and providing a functioning application is

essential to the company. By ensuring that we make a high quality product that remains

affordable and user friendly to all individuals, we guarantee customer satisfaction.

3.8 Business Processes

3.8.1. PRODUCT MANUFACTURING PROCESS – In order to provide customers with an

affordable, user-friendly product, the business must have an efficient product

manufacturing process. This process must be cost effective for the business to allow the

product to be sold at a reasonable price to customers. Furthermore, to avoid customer

complaints and avoid additional expense to the company the process must yield fully

functioning products. The product manufacturing process for our business comprises of

several steps, with the design and development of the tracking device and corresponding

application, being the most important. Once a successful version of the application is

achieved, the product manufacturing process is complete.

3.8.2. QUALITY TESTING PROCESS – The purpose of quality testing is to detect imperfections

in the products. Having flaws in the products can impact both our business and the

customers. Our business could suffer an economic loss, our customers would be dissatisfied

and we would lose our competitive advantage. By having an effective quality testing

process, we are able to avoid these issues and live up to our vision of providing an

affordable, user-friendly system that works anytime, anywhere. Repeated testing of several

features, under various conditions ensures the product acts in the desired way, in all

circumstances.

3.9 Functionalities

3.9.1. PRODUCT MANUFACTURING PROCESS

Manage raw materials. Modify application design.

3.9.2. QUALITY TESTING PROCESS

Display accurate location of item(s). Monitor provision of automatic notifications of item(s) movement.

3.10 Systems

3.10.1. INVENTORY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – The Inventory Management System is

particularly important for managing raw materials during the product manufacturing

process. It may take several attempts to create the perfect product, so we want to avoid

material shortage; not having enough of the necessary supplies and/or material wastage;

having too many supplies that are unnecessary or ineffective in creating a flawless product.

Efficient inventory management saves the business time and money and subsequently

allows us to create an affordable product for our customers.

3.10.2. KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – The Knowledge Management System involves

capturing, making information available to all employees in a way that assists effective

decision making. In order to create the best product possible, knowledge from all

departments must be made available to all other departments. For example, knowledge

from the marketing and the research and development departments must be readily

available to the application design department, to allow features of the application design

to be modified according to what customers’ are looking for, based on the feedback

received during the marketing and research stages. This guarantees that the product will be

user-friendly and tailored to the customers’ preferences.

3.10.3. APPLICATION ANALYSIS SYSTEM – The Application Analysis System is crucial to the

quality testing process. This system promises customer satisfaction, which in turn allows the

business to maintain a good reputation. If the application does not accurately perform tasks

such as, displaying an item’s location or providing automatic notifications of an item’s

movement, it will be inconsistent with our vision. Repeated testing of the application in

different conditions will ensure that it works anytime, anywhere in a user-friendly manner.
