Segovia Teaching Centre is part of the British Council, which is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for educational and cultural relations. Founded in 1934, today we are a major international organisation working in more than 100 countries, employing 7,900 staff, and teaching English to 495,000 students.

Welcome to the British Council Segovia. We are delighted you have chosen to study with us and we hope that your language learning experience here will be a positive one and that you will soon notice the improvement in your / your child’s English. We aim to ensure progress through the expertise of our qualified teachers, our communicative methodology, interactive digital equipment in the classrooms and access to a range of self-study resources.

In this guide you can find information about our centre and our courses. It outlines our aims and academic structure and describes our methods of teaching and assessment as well as explaining the opportunities we provide to encourage autonomous language learning.

We have invested time and resources in developing our academic credentials and the British Council Segovia has an outstanding and well-deserved reputation as a centre of excellence for teaching English to both young learners and adults. ESTRUCTURA ACADÉMICA

Each of our courses represents one part ofa programme of study that will assist yourchild in becoming proficient in English.

Normally students will pass to the next level at the end of a course unless their marks from continuous assessment and/or formal exams indicate they haven’t yet assimilated the language and met the course objectives. In this case they will have to spend more time at the same level before they are ready to progress further through the academic structure. At the end of a course the teacher will make a recommendation for the appropriate next course based on the ability and level of the students.

Learning a language is a long term objective, and each person develops skills at a different pace. The next level recommendation tells us the best place for the student to continue learning.

Cada uno de nuestros cursos representaparte de un plan de estudios que ayudará asu hijo a dominar el inglés.

Normalmente los alumnos pasarán al siguiente nivel al término de un curso a menos que sus notas de evaluación continua y de los exámenes formales demuestren que no han asimilado el contenido y alcanzado los objetivos del curso. En este caso tendrán que quedarse en el mismo nivel hasta estar preparados para seguir avanzando en la estructura académica. Al final de un curso el profesor hará una recomendación de el siguiente nivel más apropiado para el alumno según sus capacidades y nivel alcanzado.

Aprender un idioma es un objetivo a largo plazo y cada uno aprende a su ritmo. La recomendación de siguiente nivel ubica al alumno en el nivel adecuado para seguir el aprendizaje.

This is divided into 6 levels, starting with Koalas for four year-olds in certain off-site schools only, Pandas for five year-olds, Tigers for six year-olds and then Pink, Red and Yellow depending on individual student ability. In these levels lots of importance is given to the stimulation of the child’s oral and aural skills. One of our fundamental aims is to develop a positive attitude towards English as something enjoyable and we try to ensure that the children have a good time in class. There is a gradual introduction of more and more reading and writing.

Se divide en 6 niveles, empezando con los Koalas para los chicos de cuatro años solamente en algunos colegios, los Pandas para los alumnos de cinco años, los Tigers para los de seis años y luego Pink, Red y Yellow, dependiendo de la capacidad individual de los alumnos. En estos niveles se da mucha importancia a la estimulación de las aptitudes orales y auditivas del niño. Uno de nuestros objetivos fundamentales es desarrollar una actitud positiva hacia el inglés como algo divertido e intentamos asegurar que el niño se lo pase bien en clase. A medida que avanzan se va incorporando más lectura y escritura.

This is divided into five levels from elementary up to level 4 and while the students learn more grammar and vocabulary and continue to develop the basic skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, there is a continued emphasis on oral communication. Continuous assessment tasks are integrated into normal lessons.

Se divide en cinco niveles desde elementary hasta el nivel 4 y, aunque los alumnos aprenden más gramática y vocabulario y continúan desarrollando las aptitudes básicas de comprensión lectora, expresión escrita, expresión oral y comprensión oral, se incide más en la comunicación oral. In the academic year there are nine levels from senior 3 up to senior 10. Students continue to improve their accuracy in grammar and pronunciation, expand their vocabulary and develop their listening, reading, writing and speaking skills. Levels 6, 8 and 10 are orientated at preparing students for the internationally recognised Cambridge exams of First, Advanced and Proficiency respectively and we organise mock exams in February to help students prepare for these.

El año académico se divide en nueve niveles desde senior 3 a senior 10 . Los alumnos continúan mejorando su

precisión en gramática y pronunciación, amplían su vocabulario y desarrollan sus aptitudes de comprensión oral y lectora, y expresión escrita y oral. Los niveles 6, 8 y 10 están orientados a preparar a los alumnos para los exámenes de

Cambridge internacionalmente reconocidos de FCE, CAE y CPE, respectivamente y organizamos

simulacros de estos exámenes en febrero para apoyar la preparación.

As with the other departments, the adult classes aim to develop all the skills necessary to be able to understand and produce written and spoken English, with a particular emphasis on oral communication. Teachers create an open, positive classroom environment to enable students to increase their confidence using a range of stimulating, varied and up-to-date material.Levels 6, 8 and 10 are orientated at preparing students for the internationally recognised Cambridge exams of FCE, CAE and CPE respectively and we organise mock exams in February to help students prepare for these. Adults can matriculate on a termly basis.

Como en los otros departamentos, las clases de adultos tienen como objetivo el desarrollo de todas las

destrezas necesarias para poder comprender y producir inglés hablado y escrito, pero se incide más en la comunicación oral. Los profesores crean un ambiente abierto y positivo en clase para que los alumnos puedan aumentar su confianza

utilizando una variedad de materiales estimulantes y actualizados.Los niveles 6, 8 y 10 están orientados

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTS

At the end of each term parents have the opportunity to come and speak with the teacher to discuss their child’s progress. We publish student reports online and parents are able to access and print them at:

Evaluation of students’ progress is based on exams and/or continuous assessment and at the end of each course students need to have demonstrated a satisfactory level to go into the next course. If a student has not achieved an average of at least six they will have to repeat the same course. While every effort is made to avoid students repeating levels, at times it is in the best interest of the students and ensures our high standards are maintained.

Students receive a report on their progress at the end of each term. These can be accessed by going to:

Los alumnos reciben un boletín de notas al final de cada trimestre. Los padres pueden acceder a él entrando en:

Al término de cada trimestre los padres tienen la oportunidad de venir a hablar con el profesor para comentar el progreso de su hijo. Los boletines de notas se publican online y los padres pueden aceder e imprimirlos en:

La evaluación del progreso de los alumnos se realiza en base a los exámenes y a la evaluación continua y al término de cada curso los alumnos necesitan haber demostrado un nivel satisfactorio para pasar al siguiente nivel. Si un alumno no ha logrado una media de seis tendrá que repetir el mismo curso. Aunque hacemos todo lo posible para evitar que los alumnos repitan niveles, a veces es en el propio interés de los alumnos y para garantizar que se mantienen nuestros propios estándares rigurosos.

As our objective is to guarantee a positive and enjoyable learning experience for all our students, the British Council now has a firm policy of zero tolerance to all forms of bullying. Bullying can be very difficult to detect, even victims may not be aware of the fact that they are being bullied as it can manifest in various forms, e.g.

z physical violence

z emotional or psychological attacks

z insults

z disagreeable gestures / comments

z exclusion

z starting rumours / passing notes

z stealing / hiding objects

z using internet sites to post photos / comments about other students

What to do if you suspect your child might be being bullied?It’s important that you get in touch with us as soon as possible so that we can take appropriate steps to deal with the situation delicately and with discretion.

How to get in touch with your child’s teacherAs the teachers have only ten or fifteen minutes between classes to prepare material and change rooms, it can be very difficult for them to talk to you at these times. However, our teachers are very happy to discuss your child’s progress with you at more suitable times and we invite you to arrange a meeting by calling our customer services department on: 921 434 813.

Alternatively, you may like to write a note for the teacher in you child’s notebook on the ‘página de contacto con el profesor’.

Cómo ponerse en contacto con el profesor de su hijoNuestros profesores sólo disponen de diez o quince minutos entre clase y clase para cambiar de aula y preparar el material, por lo que resulta muy difícil que puedan hablar con los padres en esos momentos. Sin embargo, nuestros profesores estarán encantados de comentar con usted los progresos de sus hijos en un horario más adecuado y le invitamos a que solicite una entrevista llamando a nuestro departamento de atención al cliente al teléfono 921 434 813.

WELCOMEto the library

There are a range of materials to suit any level and age which you can use on site or take home. These include graded readers, novels, non fiction titles, magazines and DVDs. We also have a number of resources to help you with learning English such as language reference and practice books, exam practice materials and dictionaries. Our friendly librarian will be on hand to help you and is always happy to recommend titles if you are not sure what you are looking for.

Young Learners in our Primary and Junior departments can take advantage of our “Reading Challenge” and win prizes for reading and writing about books. More information about this will be given in the first class library visit in the first term.

In addition, all our classes visit the library and our computers and will have the opportunity to explore a range of interactive digital software. They will also be shown how to navigate the British Council’s Learn English Website, a self study tool which is full of interesting and motivating activities for learners of all ages.

As a member of British Council Segovia Teaching Centre you are entitled to use our Library.

Please remember to follow these basic guidelines:• Return items on time

• Keep the library tidy

• Do not eat/drink in the library

• Tell library staff if you have lost your book, DVD, etc.

• Be considerate towards library staff, property and other users

• Respect borrowing limits for the academic year.

Don’t forget to ask for advice and give us your suggestions.

And most importantly, use the library regularly and enjoy yourself!

• Comunica al personal la biblioteca si has perdido tu libro, DVD, etc.

• Sé considerado con el personal de la biblioteca, el material y el resto de usuarios.

• Respeta los límites de préstamo establecidos para el curso académico.

No te olvides de solicitar información y de hacernos llegar tus sugerencias.

Y lo más importante, ¡utiliza el Centro de Recursos periódicamente y disfruta!

Existe una variedad de materiales para cada edad y nivel, que pueden ser utilizados tanto en el centro como en casa. En ellos se incluye lectura graduada, novelas, libros de referencia, revistas y DVD’s. También disponemos de una variedad de recursos que le pueden ayudar a aprender inglés como libros de teoría y practica, material para preparar los exámenes y diccionarios. Nuestra bibliotecaria estará encantada en ayudarles para recomendarles títulos si no esta seguro de lo que busca.

Nuestros alumnos, tanto de Primaria como de Junior podrán aprovechar nuestros “Reading Passports” y ganar premios por haber leído y escrito acerca de los libros que han pedido prestados. Tendrán más información acerca de este tema durante la primera visita de la clase que tendrá lugar en el primer trimestre.

Todos nuestras clases visitaran la biblioteca y nuestra sala de ordenadores y tendrán la oportunidad de explorar una gama de software digital interactivo. También tendrán la ocasión de navegar en la página web del British Council English Website, el cual servirá como instrumento de autoayuda lleno de actividades interesantes y motivadoras para alumnos de todas las edades.

THE PORTAL | EL PORTAL

The Centre has its own portal for students. This is a website which students can access from home via the Internet.

The portal provides interactive content for students to practise their English, as well as providing links to selected Internet sites, including British Council sites, such as www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish.htm. It also shows samples of work that students have done in their class with their classmates. This includes written work and also provides a platform for displaying artwork, web pages and videos that students have produced themselves. The portal is accessible via https://spainportal.britishcouncil.org. Ask your teacher for your username and password.

El Centro cuenta con su propio portal para los alumnos. Se trata de una página web a la que los alumnos pueden acceder desde casa a través de Internet.

El portal proporciona contenido interactivo para que los alumnos practiquen su inglés, además facilita enlaces a sitios de Internet seleccionados, incluidos los sitios del British Council como www.britishcouncil.org/learnenglish.htm. También muestra ejemplos de los trabajos que los alumnos han realizado en clase con sus compañeros.
