writes of formationthe sefer yetzirah itselfthis text is considered the oldest of the so called Kabbalistic texts. References to it first appear in the first century ce and quotes from the text itself began to appear in other works around the sixth century. It has been variously considered as a mystical, magical, philosophical or grammatical text depending on the particular slant of whoever happened to be writing about it. It never fails to amaze me that people can�t accept the simple fact that it is all of those at the same time. Be that as it may the text itself is quite small. The short version, which this present work is based on, contains a little over 1200 words. Opposite this is the so-called a Long Version of some 2500 words. Somewhere between these two, weighing in at around 1800 words is what is known as the Gra Version, produced in the 18th century and which is the favorite and preferred version of the Jewish Kabbalah. And I make this distinction because the oral traditions the text is documenting would long precede the evolution of the Jewish faith. This fact is alluded to, in the last verse of basically all the versions, by the attribution of these traditions to the name of Abraham. Abraham is now considered to have lived between 2000 and 1500 bce . This would be between 700 - 200 years before the time of the exodus of Moses which is now set at sometime around 1300 bce., which point would mark the begining of the transformation of the Hebrew people into the people of the Jewish faith. However it was not until sometime after 540 bce that they adopted the babylonian alef-ber now known as hebrew. And it is the mystical grammar of this alef-bet which is the basis for the Sefer Yetzirah. Abraham is said to have been born in Ur of the Chaldees. Chaldea was the 'then' name for the culture which was earlier referred to as Sumeria. Regarding that culture's relationship with 'esoterica', referencing Chaldea at the Encarta website produces topics focusing on palmistry, oracles, divination [chiromancy] and astrology. In particular they credit Chaldea as the birthplace of western astrology in the year 3000 bce. This then would be the knowledge base of traditions from out of which the Book of Formation arose.

The manuscript designated as London 1902 is the source i used for this projeck Published by Menasheh Grossberg on the basis of Oxford Manuscript 2250:2. Known as the Short Version, this version is attributed to Avusel Donash ben Tamim who wrote it in arabic in 955 ce in Kairwan Tunisia. In it Donash transcribed the version of the Sefer he had memorized and included commentaries on it based on the teachings of his master, R. Yitzchak Israeli. Donash�s work is considered to be one of the first three commentaries to be written on the text and the most reliable rendering of the short version of the source text itself. Once this was translated into hebrew it became the

dominant version, appearing in manuscripts and collections of mystical writings over the following 1000 years.

providenceIf that last number gives pause, consider that the oral traditions eventually codified into a teaching under the name Sefer Yetzirah would have originated in Sumeria circa 5-3000 bce. From there they would have been taken up by the Babylonian culture from whence they passed into the judaic world after their return from their exile in Babylonian c. 540 bce. This line of transmission can be considered without question given the fact that before the return the then �proto-jews� were not even using the alef-bet which is the basis of the text.This line of transmission also accounts for the similarities between these aspects of �Jewish� Qabalha and Arabic Sufism.

In translations which are based on the long version [the best example of which was produced by Aryeh Kaplan in his book Sefer Yetzirah � the Book of Creation in Theory and Practice, Samuel Weiser Inc., 1990] the majority of the text is devoted to an exposition of the various manifestations held to correspond to the 22 letters of the �Hebrew� alef-bet. And I put the word Hebrew in quotes because, while originating as the esoteric heiroglyphs of the Sumerian culture, these 22 letters became the exoteric alef-bet of the Babylonian culture. And it was from them, during their time of exile [circa X-Y bce] that the Jews were first introduced to it. Following their return from their exile they eventually proceeded to translate their various scriptures using these letters, so once again they became an esoteric / holy alef-bet. And as these scriptures became known as the sacred books of the �Hebrews�, that led to the alef-bet they were written in being identified as �Hebrew� as well. The relationship here is that the teachings which are inherent in the texts pre-date any notion of the Jewish mysticism which later developed around them. It has long been accepted that western astrology has its roots in the Babylonian culture, and much of what is included in the sefer yetzirah is based on a sort of mystical astrology of the heavens and the body. The saying �as above, so below� has its roots in this sort of theory and practice. Anyway, here are 2 examples of this sort of material which is predominant in the both the long and gra versions of the source text and which forms the basis for Kaplan�s work.

Note that these are my translations, and just to give some idea of my style versus the orthodox Jewish mystical style, here is Kaplan�s translation of 4.8

One thing I just do have to say at this point is that at the time that these teachings were first in practise there was NO notion of the pre-emminant �HE� type god of the Jews. Anyway. After having produced four translations of the Sefer Yetzirah I was inspired to provide a version which refines what i believe to be the most basic teachings inherent in the text dealing with personal spiritual development.

Beginning late in 2000 I began working on this series of translations of The Book for this release as a Cdplus. The finished piece includes four textual translations; exoteric, esoteric, metaphorical, allegorical versions - and a fifth �symbolic� version which will be rendered through sound.

The four textual versions are based on a source text that was first published in London in 1902. It is a �Hebrew� version of an Arabic original written in Tunisia in 955 ce by Donash ibn Tamim. I chose this version because I felt it was informed by the purest strain of its traditions; that is the mysticism shared by both Sufism and what is now known as Qabalha. This would be in contradistinction to versions that are more wholly informed by what can be called a particularly �Jewish� mysticism. Anyway. Deep in the process of this piece I was inspired to render what I consider to be an �essential� version of the text and which would be the basis for the symbolic/sonic version. It is entitled The Sapphire Nature, which is also a variant translation of the words normally translated as Book of Formation.The Book of Formation [or The Book] is perhaps the most influential mystical text arising in the Middle East between the years 1500 to 500 bce. That is; from the Abrahamic period [the transition of cultural dominance from Sumer to Babylon] to the return of the Hebrews from their exile in Babylon and their adoption of the Babylonian ale-bet. From that somewhat nebulous point of origin its authority was guaranteed by its influence upon the various mystic schools of Alexandrine Egypt; Al-Khemic, Hermetic, Neo-Platonic/Pythagorean etc. [100 bce � 500 ce] through the time of the occult renaissance in Italy where its tenets underscored the works of Marsilio Ficinio [1433-99] and Pico della Mirandola [1463-94] through Giordano Bruno [1548-1600] upon which most �modern� occultism is based.

In particular these tenets included the notion of the �magical alphabet� and the �doctrine of correspondence� upon which their sympathetic magics were based. The Book also includes a ritual which must be considered the original template for the �pentagram ritual� which has been adapted by so many various occult schools. Anyway. It is noteworthy that the actual salient of the entire body of teachings in the traditional texts and commentaries is quite conspicuous by its absence. And that salient is what is now commonly known as The Tree of Life.

The Tree of Life is a glyph composed of 10 spheres connected by 22 lines and is the basis for pretty much all of the rites and rituals in current western �magical� traditions. Anyway.

The following text consists of 4 chapters of 4 verses each. The first chapter lays out the basic elements of this system � it identifies the 1o spheres of consciousness with the well known glyph of the �Tree of Life� [which is missing in any version of the text I have ever seen] and links this with what I feel is one of the most crucial lines in the whole of the Book of Genesis. It then goes on to delineate the way in which the 22 letters/numbers are grouped. The second chapter includes the invocational ritual and describes two of the most important ways of manipulating the letters/numbers. These methods, and others, are dealt with intensively throughout Rhythmajik. The third chapter is a series of Al-Khemikal/elemental tantric meditations including both yantric and mantric details. The fourth chapter describes three meditations: the first of which includes a sort of koan. The following two include specific verses; the first is obviously related to �the vision of Ezekiel� and the second to what can be considered as either a heavenly hierarchy or the elemental orders. Note that I include the numbers of both the letters and what verses are quoted. Following the text there are a short series of notes explaining some of the points raised in verses 1.1, 1,4, 2.2, 2.4 and 4.3.

notes: 1.1The �3 swords�: form, proportion, pronunciation can be considered as tantra, yantra, and mantra ie, the physical, the visual, the sonic. 1.4The identification of the 12 nodes of the soul with the 5 senses and 7 chakras is unique to this version. 2.2This method of generating 484 unique �bi-lateral� combinations is the basis for the Book of Roots which lies at the heart of Rhythmajik. of 446 of these 2 numbered combinations are delineated which can allow one, when these number patterns are used as BEAT patterns to, as the saying goes; �drum what you mean�. 2.4There are many differences between this ritual and the common �pentagram� ritual: this one begins facing the West, which direction corresponds to the element Water relating this ritual to the traditions regarding the �crossing of the waters�. As to the choice of letter/numbers, I think a particular set of correspondences would be instructive here [especially if this verse is considered as a preparation for the series of rites described in chapter three]: 5 = consecration, 6 = the eternal, 1o = initiation. With regard to its instruction to �intone� these three letters: We enter here into that concept known as the �Word of Power�. The bottom line of all traditions stemming from The Book in this regard is that when one is working with a letter, they must combine that letter with all 5 vowels. If one is interested in following this line of thought then, one would take the guttural H, the labial V and the Palatal Y and run them through their various a � e � i � o � u pronunciations. This would produce 750 unique versions of the 6 permutations of H V Y which make up this ritual. But please note that this is a �simple� number in that it does not take into account the combining of long and short vowels � if this is included the number greatly expands If one explored all of these one would also find which pronunciations �spoke� to them, and thus answer the question �well...how does one pronounce these letters?�. The technique of premutation mentioned in 2.3 is applied to arrive at these 750 pronunciations. Translation InterviewConversation between Jon Wozencroft and Z'ev, 5 Sept l988, London

Why did you start doing translation work? What is the connection, if any, between this and the musical and performance work you were doing as Z'EV or uns?

It had to do with the "central point" from which all the work originates. I had started writing in 1963, and in 1973 I began doing a lot of things with 'transmutation' and 'permutation', very formal systems applied to language; transmutation: ABC/DEF, A=D, B=E, C=F; permutation: ABC, ACB, BCA, BAC, CAB, CBA. These are meaningful in the context of a hieroglyphic language, but I was using the Roman alphabet and while it was intriguing to me, it had no apparent meaning to anyone else. Never-theless, I sensed that something was there.

I was also writing out of dictionaries: I had a self-pronouncing dictionary that I was given when I graduated from Elementary school, and at some point I chose that to be my work and experience pool, developing formal systems to access that information - writing poems from it. I would come up with a phrase or word such as "book token"; I would then pick a word beginning with the letters b-o-o-k-t-o-k-e-n, and generate sentences. Then I'd edit them, working up various versions of the generated sentences. That work slowly developed into the "contexts" - context is defined as the weaving together of language, so I took this literally, cutting up the text and weaving visual works.

This was the jump from the "Burroughsian" to a "Gysinian" process (so to speak): the desire to get the materials of communication to reveal their hidden truths, a popular concern at that time. There were a few shows of these visual works, but soon music would take up most of my time.

6 years passed, and I got in-volved with qabalhistic studies - so I began to deal with a hieroglyphic alphabet rather than a symbolic one, and all of a sudden I discovered that transmutation and permutation are ancient systems of meditation and of mind concentration - a discipline but also an exegesis with which to call meanings from the hieroglyphs. I could jump immediately into it.

It was as if I'd already done the homework. I had already developed the mental muscles, so you could say that this was a giant coincidence, though obviously not a coinci-dence.

Once again I was writing with dictionaries, looking up the meanings that came from the permutations and transmutations.

However, the story of how I came to write again in 1985 is extremely occult, meaning obscured and veiled. I don't think it's necessary to get into all the nitty gritty - suffice to say that at the end of 1984 in San Francisco, I began to do translations of liturgical texts - initially Tibetan texts, where I would start with the transliteration of the Sanskrit (how it's pronounced); I would take this, and because the Babylonian/Hebrew characters from the Old Testament are phonetic, I would then transliterate the Sanskrit into the Babylonian characters. When I did this, it always matched - when checked against the English.

What dictlonarles were you using In thls process?

A dictionary called The Sepher Malim, the life-work of someone called Mordicai Jastrow who lived in Philadelphia at the end of the 1800s. He worked for 50 years on it. It's a dictionary that's half Aramaic and half biblical Hebrew, with a large cross section of Greek transliterations. It's not a dictionary of the bible, but of the oral literatures and commentaries on biblical texts. The rabbis used to sit around and discuss what such and such a verse meant, and there would be various schools of interpretation.

It wasn't until the Christian/Roman axis came along that there were fixed meanings ascribed to the Old Testament, when they translated it into Greek. Actually, it was the Jewish community in Greece that did this, but they were the community that most of the Christians came out of: Paul's letter to the Thessalonians etc. The point is, there are two inter-locking systems - a consonantal system and a vowel system; so say you have three consonants, F K and T, there are 9 vowel 'points', so they could be pronounced 'fukata', 'fikoti', 'feketi' etc., each giving different qualities of meaning.

Now, the biblical texts were set, but the Hebrew scrolls that documented them don't include vowel points. These were memorised. So various schools then arose - Jesus had his school, and would interpret the bible by giving the words to a particular phrase different pronounciations, changing the meaning by doing so. The same text could become something completely different. The rabbis used to sit around and talk about the various interpretations and decide which ones were canonical and which ones were heretical. These conversations became what is known as oral literature (Mishna, Talmud, etc). There's a whole written literature of the transcriptions of all these conversations that go back to about 100 B.C. up to about 500 A.D.

This dictionary that I use refers to that literature and not the biblical literature, which is like a fixed deck. If you use a biblical dictionary, the only sound/word that you're going to get will be the same as what you will find in the Bible itself.

If you use Jastrow�s dictionary, however, there might be 5, 6, or 7 different versions that come out of one word group. Different pronounciations. So you just figure it out. The number of meanings that can be drawn from one sentence can be pretty large. This has always intrigued me, so for a variety of reasons, in 1985, I decided that I was going to do a translation of The Song of Songs.

The first one I did I wasn't really thrilled with, but by the second one I was really into it and I realised the magic of this system - how complex and subtle it was. The intellects that used to exist back then! People who could not only memorise a vast body of literature, but memorise its different versions. It makes computers puny; and they didn't need printing when they had such incredible memories.

In the context of all the other things I'm doing, I'm very interested in memory. These stories (groups of hieroglyphs) are like repositories of memory, and like a matrix. The combinations of letters literally form a code. They have specific potentials for memory. And when you're translating, it is like you are remembering the story - complete with visuals and the whole thing.

It's as if a voice were talking to you, this whole receptor/receiver process, the interlocking disciplines all coalesce. You're listening, "skipping" around, then all of a sudden you pick up this signal that you follow. The thread you pick up weaves a story � you check the dictionary, and lo and behold that word is there, this word is there and that word is there. The letters point themselves before your eyes. To make a demonstration of this, I decided to do 3 translations, all different, but all consistent in their flow. They don't jump context from verse to verse.

If you look at the canonical translations, they jump all over the place and include words that are redundant in their definition - they have no meaning beyond the fact that they appear in The Song of Songs. Like 'the Shulamite' is this "character" - but they have no idea whether it's a person, a place or a thing, animal/vegetable/mineral. They just say 'the Shulamite'. It could be a flower for all they know... "They" being the canonical authorities of the last 400 years. Definitions just reference 'the Shulamite'.

Another thing that complicates the issue is that there are no spacings in very traditional scripturessincethelettersjust allrunintooneanother. Which means you can break them up in any way you want. The only thing that need influence your choice of breaks is whether or not you're getting semantic mat-erial out of it or not.

It's much like computer hacking - tracing a current, following the flow of this massive amount of information, holding hundreds of combinations before your mind's eye before making a selection.

And because you're dealing with these memories, you also start getting into the time travel aspect of it, following this voice as it becomes louder and louder, clearer and closer, until you reach the actual time and see the events taking place. You're there, witnessing the story. It's incredible. So the translations also function as a form of travel. They're stories out of time � no different to a Grimm fairy-tale. They deal with these archetypal images.

One of the stories, Verse from out of the Cauldron, tells of the "mythical"/archtypal time when women were developing magic, and how that came about.

Songs of the Jackal is basically a book of the dead - it has a lot of similarities to The Egyptian / Tibetan Books of the Dead, witness the jackal, who you follow down into the hall of judgement, and when I reached the end of Songs of the Jackal I found that it didn't actually have an ending - which I couldn't understand, seeing as the translation was going so well; it took me a while to realise that I had to loop it back to the beginning for the last sentence to make sense. A cyclical thing: and every time you re-read it, you go through another bardo, to use a word from the Tibetan.

The Scales of Formation is basically a description of the cult of the snake that existed in the Middle East and the fertility ritual that took place under the dark of the moon after the Spring equinox - the night of the snake, very similar to the maypole ritual where everybody would run out into the fields in the dark and freely procreate to spread the gene pool. It's also like a tantric manual for the fertility cult, both the outer and the inner. This story is so dense, describing all the rituals; I could see the mystery school that all the kids would go into, and I saw the dormitories where they stayed, where they ate, and so on.

But what use is this?

Information. It's a bit like being an ethnomusicologist - you go out into the field and you find this music that exists, you document it in the best way possible, and bring it back so that other people can share it; as in Formations where it says "the flowing of pure movement is memory, the reproduction of an image of an action in another phase of manifestation..."

So you have these tracks - everyone who ever lived who ever had a story - it's

there. It's a conglomerate, a specific point, potentials, these points in space between the so-called prophetic texts (The Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, Matthew, etc.) which exist on parallel realities, as if they were radio stations playing the blood music (as Greg Bear extrapolates so well in the book of the same name). They might tell the same news, but with different slants - or even completely different reference points. They're just like centres, nodes where consciousness is made avail-able. You go to the door, you knock, it opens up and you keep walking. You listen, looking for the signal to pick up, then you might have to backtrack.

The voices don't come immediately, and again it's like hacking - you have to work. You might be up for a week solid without sleep to get all the way through a story; and at the time, that's no great hardship because time stops.

You just follow your senses to the sense which is there to be found.
