The Conversion of UMAR bin Al-KHATTAB (RA)(6th year of Prophet hood)

Conversion of Umar (RA)• Man of courage and determination.• Feared and respected in Makkah.• Bitter opponent of Islam.• Secretly he admired the stamina of the

Muslims and their persistent dedication to their faith.• Prophet made dua for him

Conversion of Umar (RA)• One day he set out with a sword in his hand

with the intention to kill the Prophet, but somebody told him that his own sister had accepted Islam.• He went straight to his sister, Fatima’s

house and heard Khabbab bin Aratt (ra) reciting surah TA’ HA.• They hid the mushaf when they heard

Umar approaching.

• After beating his brother-in-law and sister fiercely, he asked them to show what they were reading. • Once he read the Quran, he went

straight to Prophet and embraced Islam.

• Conversion of Umar (ra) was a real triumph for the cause of Islam. • Muslims started worshipping openly

in and around the Ka’abah.

• Mockery• Insulting and harming the Messenger (saw)• Accusations or character assassinations• Deforming or defaming the message

• Bargaining or negotiating with Prophet and his uncle

• Temptations• Setting challenges• Putting him under pressure• Showing disgust and hatred• Persecution• Assassination attempts

Quraish’s negotiations with the messenger

• Utbah bin rabiah approached the Prophet and offered a bargain to him that if he stopped proclaiming his new faith, they would give him:1. As much money and riches as he wanted2. Kingship of Quraish 3. Best physician to cure, if he was under any

spell

Another kind of negotiation

• They were willing to give up some of their faith, requesting him to leave some of his.• Allah revealed:

Abu Talib assembles his family• Abu Talib exhorted Banu Hashim and

Banu Muttalib to protect the Prophet.• All of them whether believers or non

believers, responded positively and took oath to protect the Prophet, except Abu Lahab who sided with the idolaters.

General Social Boycott

From the 7th year of Prophet hood till the 10th

year

A pact of Injustice and Aggression

• Quraish formed an evil confederation.• They took an oath to boycott Banu

Hashim and Banu Al-Muttalib until the Prophet was given up to them to be killed.• They made a written covenant and put

that on a wall, inside Ka’abah.

Three years of great hardship• Abu Talib took Banu Hashim and Banu

Muttalib and confined them within a narrow pass (shi’b of Abu Talib). • The supply of food was almost stopped.• They had to eat tree leaves and animal

skins.

Three years of great hardship• Cries of little children, suffering from

hunger, could be heard clearly.• Prophet did not stop preaching even in

such harsh conditions.

Dissolution of the pact• Hisham bin Amr initiated and gathered a

small group of five people, who were also grieving at the sad situation of Banu Hashim and Banu Muttalib, near Kaabah to abolish the pact.• They demanded Quraish to tear the pact.• Abu Jahl argued with them and said that it

would not be torn until the Prophet was handed over to be killed.

Dissolution of the pact• Mean while Abu Talib came and said that

a revelation had been sent to his nephew that the ants had already eaten the pact.• Later they all discovered that to be true

and so the pact was dissolved and people were permitted to leave Shi’b Abi talib and go home.

The Year of Grief

The tenth year of the Prophet hood

• Six months after leaving the confinement of Shi’b abi talib, Prophet’s dearest uncle fell ill and died.• Only two or three months after the

death of his uncle, his beloved wife Khadija (ra) passed away as well.
