Prayer for an Engaged Church
Dear Lord, we want to be an engaged church, a parish motivated by love for You and committed to our mission of living out Your gospel. We ask that You be with us on our spiritual journey.
Help us to be a worshipping community, devoted to Mass, praying with and for one another, and lifting
our voices joyfully in song.
Help us to be a welcoming community with smiles and outstretched arms as we greet all who enter our doors, be they friends or strangers.
Help us to be a community of good stewards who support our parish and are compassionate to the needs of the poor.
Help us to be a ministering community, cheerfully and tirelessly offering time and talent in service to others.
Help us to be a community of disciples who place You, Lord, at the center of our lives.
Help us to be an engaged community with open hearts and open minds to Seek You Lord, Share Your Gifts, and Rejoice in Your Blessings.
We ask these things in Your Holy Name.
Amen.- by Margie André

“Avoid giving offense…Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.”
Dear Parishioners,
Paul’s brief passage we hear proclaimed this week, is full of wisdom on how to live an authentic Christian life. Paul was aware of the powerful effects of nega-tive and criticizing behav-ior. It undermines the unity and respect we should have for one another.
Our relationships and our sense of community are un-der much stress because of the culture of complaint. It can be very easy to point out faults and question motives rather than to embrace the love and patience the Lord challenges us to share.
Paul’s refl ections become a wonderful backdrop as we prepare to launch the Lenten Season this week. As we are signed with ashes this Wednesday, we are challenged to repent and believe the Good News! Perhaps there is someone in our life that we have been unduly hard on, or critical of. Maybe a grace of the Lenten journey could be to “reset” the manner in which we approach this person, perhaps we need to seek forgiveness or make peace.
This weekend at the 5:00 Mass on Saturday, we cel-ebrate the grace of marriage and witness the renewal of marriage vows. Again, the second reading could give married couples encouragement to heal the pain of misunderstandings and hurtful words. The sacra-ment of marriage is one of the great sources of God’s grace in the world.
This Lent we are undertaking a wonderful initiative with Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH), an organization that supports orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children and young adults. OLPH has a long history of support-ing NPH. Each year several parishioners have participat-ed in service trips to their orphanage in Guatemala.
Each week in the bulletin, you will be able to read about the many ways that our refl ection and support of the care of at-risk young people can really put a face on the Lenten disciplines of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. There will be many ways you can take advantage of this Lenten opportunity to make this a powerful journey of personal renewal.
This weekend is the fi nal session of our annual OLPH Junior Basketball Program. What a tradition! This year 320 children participated, 125 parents volunteered and almost $13,000 raised. WinTrust Bank donated basketballs for all the kids. Special thanks to Coaches
Zidar, Sully and Conlon who were awesome! Tom Zidar has done an extraordinary job of making splen-did use of our beautiful gym and providing a great opportunity for kids and their parents to have fun and develop basic basketball skills.
Our First Fruits program designates 6% of our weekly offering to our Sharing Parishes and the resources we need to make most of the mandated second collec-tions. We also support special needs. We were able to support emergency hurricane relief this past fall, the Domestic Violence Initiative of the Archdiocese, Amate House, our Catholic High Schools and the Catholic Ministry to the Deaf to mention a few. A committee, headed by Susan Logan, meets a few times a year to monitor the First Fruits distributions and to review requests. Our Sharing Parishes depend on our support. We need to keep communicating that your generous support of our weekly collections supports not only OLPH but many more outreaches of the Church.
Thanks for your consideration of supporting the Annual Catholic Appeal, Come, Follow Me. Thanks for your patience last weekend as we were asked to present the Cardinal’s invitation.
Have a blessed week,Fr. Jerry Boland
A REFLECTION ON LENT
From Ashes to GloryIt’s been said that God’s love for the worst sinner is infi nitely greater than the love of the holiest man for God. In other words, a God who is perfect and bound-less in love will always love His fi nite creatures more than we could ever love him in return. This should be a cause for authentic wonder and hope, but also for a good deal of prayer and refl ection.
We’re thrown into this life without consultation and fi nd ourselves in a world that is ours solely because we have received it as a gift. Like any gift, it has been given by a lover to a beloved, as an expression and sacrament of something otherwise inexpressible – the ecstatic love that moves between the persons of the Trinity – and that bubbles over into creation in order that others might come into being capable of sharing in the same life of a God who is love. But sharing means giving up a part of oneself, opening the door to one’s inner world, and allowing another into that sanctuary of the heart. Therefore,
seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letter

Father Nicholas Kostyk

falling in love will always mean losing the ground under one’s feet, and the meeting of two persons who love one another will always be something holy. For, love means the giving of oneself to another in the manner of a sacrifi ce; therefore, in the manner of Christ. To love, in the truest sense of the word, is to become more like Christ who is the supreme manifestation of the Father’s love for us.
All of this together is the key that unlocks the deep-est mysteries of our faith and the reason that faith can only be understood fully from the inside, by one who has abandoned his or her old self in the waters of baptism and the oil of confi rmation and now lives an entirely new life in Christ, inebriated by divine love. To defi ne our faith only as a complicated system of rules and regulations – a seemingly end-less roster of “thou shalt not’s” – is to miss the mark completely, not because sin isn’t a reality or because certain things aren’t intrinsically wrong, but because love alone makes our actions intelligible. Sure, we might do certain things and avoid others, but so does any lover who has allowed someone else – his beloved – to become the gravitational center and defi ning reality of his life.
We, individually, are the only force that can prevent God from being that gravitational center in each of our lives, and we do so whenever our thoughts, words, and actions cease to refl ect Christ and become instead a manifestation of selfi shness. At that moment, love is extinguished, for the inordinate love of self is only a caricature.
Every year, the season of Lent begins in ashes – that powdery dust that reminds us of our own mortality, and re-veals the natural destiny of all our
worldly distractions – while the ancient disciplines of fasting and abstinence, especially characteristic of this season, return as another way of addressing the self-centeredness that can slowly and almost im-perceptibly take hold of us. Just as shutting off the television and putting down the newspaper are pre-requisites for an undivided, meaningful conversation between spouses, so setting aside worldly things can help us pray more sincerely and fervently.
The season upon us is one defi ned by spiritual renewal. It is a time to rekindle the fl ames of God’s love in our hearts, and to rest more fully and more securely in the reality of His love for us. Even more, it is a time to hand ourselves over once again to the power of that love so that we might become more
and more like the One who calls us into communion with Himself. May we pray for one another as we journey from death to life and from ashes to glory.
Yours In Christ,Fr. Nicholas Kostyk
PILLARS OF LENT
Observing Lent in UnityFor many years, dozens of OLPH parishioners have been generously supporting the orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children and young adults of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (Spanish for Our Little Brothers and Sisters). On two different occasions, we have wel-comed them into our church for weekend Masses – as we will do over the March 10/11 weekend – worshipped and sang with them, and contributed to special collections on their behalf.
Many parishioners sponsor one or more Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) young people and have gotten to know them well through exchanging letters. Since 2014, dozens of teens and members of the OLPH adult community, including Fr. Isaac Lara, have participated in summer mission trips to NPH Guatemala to see how the children live, forge deeper and more meaningful relationships with them, and perform service work contributing to their comfort and well-being.
In the Catholic tradition, the season of Lent is ob-served through the three pillars; prayer, fasting and almsgiving. This year, OLPH Parish is observing Lent in unity with the young people cared for by NPH. We’re encouragimng all OLPH parishioners to lend their support to this worthwhile effort through these traditional Lenten pillars.
NPH is a unique network of children’s orphanage homes and outreach programs in nine countries throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. NPH is dedicated to improving the lives of orphaned, abandoned and at-risk children and young adults by

delivering unconditional love, comprehensive health-care and a quality education. The goal is to help these young people overcome the poverty into which they were born and develop them into productive citizens who become leaders in their own communities.
Approximately 3,200 youths call an NPH home their home. Since its founding in 1954 by Fr. William B. Wasson, NPH has provided loving and stable homes to over 20,000 children. NPH outreach programs served more than 100,000 people in 2017.
In the coming weeks of Lent, we will learn more about the NPH mission and those it serves through bulletin and website articles. As a means of making this more real and compelling to parishioners here at OLPH, we will also learn through 15 young people and their adult chaperones from NPH Guatemala – hosted by OLPH families in their homes from March 6-19 – and through their appearance at our Masses the weekend of March 10/11. It is my sincere hope that you will add them and this organization to your Lenten prayer list, that you will fast in their name, and that you will offer your fi nancial support to them during the appropriate almsgiving opportunities offered during Lent.
In closing, I offer the signfi cance of the name of the organization. In the mid-1950's, when Father Wasson was looking to name his fl edgling Mexican orphan-age, he looked to the Gospel of Matthew, in Spanish, to fi nd the perfect words...
“El Rey les responderá: ‘Les aseguro que todo lo que hicieron por uno de mis hermanos, aun por el más pequeño, lo hicieron por mí.’”
In English, we know the passage as,
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you that whatever you did for one of the littlest of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”
This week, and throughout Lent, I ask you to please prayerfully refl ect on that passage from Matthew as you consider how you will observe Lent in unity with
the least of our brothers and sisters living in some of our hemisphere’s most poverty-stricken areas.
Parishioner, Chuck AllwothMidwest Region Director, NPH USA
A LENTEN OPPORTUNITY
Open Your Heart and Home
As a means of making Lent more real and compel-ling to parishioners at OLPH, we will be welcoming 13 young people and 2 chaperones from the NPH Guatemala orphanage home into our parish from March 6-19. They will be hosted by OLPH families in their homes and they will provide liturgical music at Masses on the weekend of March 10/11.
We are in need of 14 volunteer families within OLPH Parish to host two young people, or the two chaper-ones, in their homes. There will be two shifts of seven host families. The fi rst shift of host families is March 6-12 (six nights); the second shift is March 12-18 (seven nights). Please contact Heather Anderson from NPH USA at 312-386-7489 or [email protected] for more information and to register as a host family.

Sharing Ministry
Lenten Food Drive - Help Fill the BasketsOur food count typically dives during the winter months. This year is no exception. Please continue to hear the cry of the poor. Food donations can be dropped at the Sharing Room, the entries of Church or with the kids during the Sunday Offertory. Or, you may mail a donation (made out to the OLPH) to: Lou Marohn 2132 Fir Street Glenview, IL 60025Thank you for your compassionate response to those less fortunate!
Befriend a FamilyLent begins this week, and Easter is just around the corner. We are recruiting more donors for our Befriend a Family effort which provides support to families in need at holiday time. If you are interested, we will match you with a needy family and you can provide gift cards so they can have a brighter holiday. This program helps families at our four sharing parishes as well as local families served by Sr. Paulanne. Donors choose the size family that works for them. Contact Stacy Dolan, [email protected], for more information.

Stewardship Report
Christmas Collection - December 2017Thank you for responding so well - and with such generosity - during our Christmas Offertory. The Christmas Collections were up 17% versus last year. With so many demands, it is crucial that we're able to maintain this positive trend. Beyond supporting essential parish operating expenses, a stable offertory makes it possible - through our First Fruits Program - to fulfi ll mandated second collec-tions, respond to special requests and support our Sharing Parishes, among other outreach efforts.
Next week's bulletin will include a summary of the General Offertory, July 1, 2017 through January 31, 2018. Please contact Jim Dollard, Director of Finance & Operations, with questions or concerns.
PalmsBaskets for palms are available in the rear and south vestibules of Church. Please return your old palms by February 12. The palms will be burned on February 13 in order to provide us with ashes for Ash Wednesday.

Ash Wednesday Announcement
In view of the significance of Ash Wednesday the obligation of fast and abstinence must naturally be the priority in the Catholic community. Valentine's Day can appropriately be celebrated the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday which also happens to be Mardi Gras, a traditionally festive time before beginning our Lenten observance.

Contemplative Choral Mass - Sunday, February 18, at 6:00 pm
Sacred choral works by both Fauré and Rutter will highlight the contemplative mood of our 6:00 pm Mass on Sunday, February 18. The OLPH Festival Choir, directed by Russell Stern, will sing. This is not a concert, but the music will serve to enhance the prayerfulness of the Mass.
Precautions During Flu Season
As we are experiencing an unusually serious fl u season and many concerns have been shared about susceptiblity to the threat of illness, we will suspend shaking hands during the sign of peace and offering the Cup during Communion. These precautions will be in place until the end of February when the situation will be reevaluated. Thank you for your understanding and patience.
Lenten Soup SupperOn Ash Wednesday, following the 4:30 pm prayer service, you are invited for a simple supper of soup and bread in McDonnell Hall.No reservations; just stop by.

"When I think about SPRED, I feel so alive & fi lled with grace all around the church. The love, support & excite-ment of those involved is palpable & truly exciting. To see the SPRED team visu-ally illustrate the readings is striking."- OLPH Parishioner
Please welcome family and friends from other parishes to this wonderful celebration of God’s love in action. If you know adults interested in becoming volunteer catechists in surrounding parishes, or know of someone who would ben-efi t from SPRED, please contact Sloan Donnellan Salah at 847-312-1155.

seek, share, rejoice - special events...
Often we give up something for Lent to remind us of Jesus’ sacrifi ce for us. But sometimes doing something different makes the season even more meaningful.
There will be a simple supper (soup and breadsticks), scripture study and service for young people on three Fridays during Lent. We will read the Gospel, as-semble bag lunches for the homeless and close with Stations of the Cross.
The Lenten Scripture Study dates are February 23, March 9 and March 23. Please register to help us plan accordingly. We will meet at 6:00 pm in the Youth Ministry Center.
Feed My Starving ChildrenOn Wednesday, February 21 we are going to Feed My
Starving Children in Libertyville. We will leave OL at 5:00, drive to FMSC, work from 6:00-7:30, and return before 8:30...leaving time for homework. Parents and siblings welcome!
High School Food, Faith & Fun
High School Students will meet on Februay 18 follow-ing the 6 pm. Mass in the Youth Ministry Center. We will discuss Lent and fi ll Food Bags for the homeless.
Teen Mass
Please consider joining our teens for the Sunday 6:00 pm Mass. We are looking for teens to help with any of the liurgical ministries; readers (scripture and petitions), Eucharistic Ministers, musicians or vocalists, gift bearers and greeter/ushers. This is a great opportunity to get involved and make the Mass even more meaningful.

Evolve Presentation - World Religions with Jerrol Leitner
Saturday, February 17, 9:30-11:15 am, McDonnell HallJesus In the World Religions: An Exploration of How Non-Christian Traditions View Jesus
A growing understanding of truth sees truth as plural: no one viewpoint is suffi cient to explore any reality. So ...imagine a Jew, a Muslim, a Hindu, and a Buddhist seated around a table. Surprisingly, the topic is Jesus – a fi gure respected by each tradition, but in differing and illuminating ways. This presentation examines how four of the great religions under-stand Jesus of Nazareth and the insights they unveil both to those who see him as divine and those who see him as one of world’s greatest teachers.Jerroll Leitner
