Celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2014, San Diego City College serves as the educational cornerstone

of downtown San Diego. The 60-acre City College campus is a short walk from the world-famous Balboa Park, the bustling Gaslamp

Quarter, PETCO Park, San Diego Bay, and the City College Trolley Station.

First accredited in 1952, the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges, Western Association of Schools, officially

reaffirmed San Diego City College’s accreditation for six years in 2011. President Burgess responded,

“This is the most positive action that the commission may take and is a strong reflection of the high educational quality and outstanding student support that is the hallmark of San Diego City College.”

A message from the president

As we make plans to celebrate our Centennial in 2014, San Diego City College is also busy planning for its next 100 years. Since becoming President of City College in 2001, our student population has increased from 10,000 to more than 18,000. It is expected that City College will grow to 25,000 students within the decade.

It has been another stellar academic year at San Diego City College. Nearly 250 students were selected to receive more than $350,000 in scholarship awards, including national and international honors. Student Michael Cash was named one of the 60 scholars in the nation this year to receive a $30,000 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship.

Thanks to the San Diego Community College District $1.555 billion Propositions S and N construction bond program, our campus is undergoing a massive transformation. Along 16th Street, we have completed the Career Technology Center and the Math and Social Sciences buildings. The Arts and Humanities, Business Technology, and the Sciences buildings are set for completion in 2013.

While increasing economic challenges continue to impinge on education, City College strives to provide the highest standard of academic programs and services to help ensure the success of every student.

My twelve years as President of San Diego College has been the most rewarding of my 42-year career in academe. With my retirement in June of 2013, I look forward to leading our 99th Commencement in May. As always, our faculty and staff have worked diligently to prepare another class of graduates with the skills and talents to make a difference. It is true that at San DIego City College - we change lives!

Seeds@City 2011-2012 Growth and Productivity

• 40 students completed internships for academic credit at Seeds@City, or off-campus with agriculture-related businesses and non-profit community partners

•42% of students workers are now employed in the field or are farming their own land

• Grew over 2000 pounds of produce to support our direct marketing ventures since January 2012.

• Doubled our weekly community-supported agriculture (CSA) program

• Raised over $92,000 to help support the program into 2013 to:

- fund additional classes - hire a part-time farm coordinator, part-time production coordinator, and three part-time production assistants - pilot an urban farm-to-table program delivering produce weekly to Alchemy Cultural Fare restaurant in Golden Hill - purchase supplies needed to maintain the farm and support courses - build a greenhouse to grow and support the program

Serving as the educational cornerstone of San Diego since 1914, San Diego City College provides businesses in our region with thousands of employees in a wide variety of fields, including health care, engineering, journalism, broadcasting, graphic design and information technology. Offering more than 200 associate degree and certificate programs, City is expected to grow from 18,000 students to 25,000 students within the decade.

NursingWith health care in the national spotlight and the demand for nurses growing, San Diego City College is proud to have graduated more than 2000 students from its Nursing program. Consistently throughout the past four decades, many Nursing students have job offers before their graduation. In May 2012, City College graduated 53 additional nurses into the field. More than 65% of the graduates have already taken their licensing exam and have had a 100% NCLEX-RN pass rate.

Underwater MissionsIn July, students from San Diego City College joined more than 200 engineering students from 28 schools representing 10 different countries in the 15th International RoboSub Competition at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR) in Point Loma. City’s Robotics Team spent months creating and building their autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), the Kraken. Hosted by the U.S. Navy, the competition allows scouts to look for new technology and promising engineering students with the skills to design underwater vehicles for real tactical missions. City College ranked in the top half of the competition against teams from Canada, China, Japan, and Russia, including Cornell and Embry Riddle Universities. City College also earned the Mayor’s Award for their active community outreach sharing information about their work and Robotics program.

Graduates of San Diego City College’s Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT-SD) Shipworks Institute.

ShipbuildingSan Diego City College’s Center for Applied Competitive Technologies (CACT-SD) is putting local citizens back to work! With shipbuilding and repair in San Diego projected to grow significantly in the next five years, $300,000 was awarded to the partnership of the CACT-SD and the Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association (PSDSRA) to support training and development for the incumbent and future workforce.

Through the CACT- SD ShipWorks Institute, 100 incumbent or potential workers received training during the 2011/2012 fiscal year. Within 30 days of completion of the program, 85% of all ShipWorks Institute graduates were hired into the ship repair industry.

Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders Today

Academy for STEM SuccessIn August 2011, San Diego City College piloted its first ever Academy for STEM Success. The Academy is a national model for addressing the need to increase the retention and success of students in the STEM majors of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

With a focus on underrepresented minorites and women, nearly 100 incoming high school students spent three full days listening to mentors, faculty, and industry leaders talk about a culture of learning. Academy graduates begin their first college semester with a host of tools, skills, and resources to enable them to hit the ground running to achieve their academic and career goals. One student mentor reminded the new recruits that “they create their own success”. Several of the Academy mentors are already success stories with straight A grades and admission to four-year institutions such as UCSD and Cal Poly (California Polytechnic State University).

For the 2011-12 academic year, SDCC students received more than $350,000 in scholarship awards, including national and international honors. At the 21st Annual City College Scholarship Banquet on April 30, 2012, the SDCC Foundation awarded 415 scholarships totaling $226,000 to 243 students, with 67 students earning multiple awards.

Inspire1 of 60 National ScholarsMichael Cash, City College Associated Student President and a combat veteran, was one of 60 Scholars in the nation selected in 2012 to receive the prestigious $30,000 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship. Michael graduated from City College in May with Associate degrees in Social/Behavioral Sciences and Language Arts/Humanities. He transferred to SDSU to study International Business with an emphasis in Spanish and Latin America. His future plans include pursuing an MBA and law degree to specialize in international trade and immigration.

World Capitals ProgramBerlin, Paris, Strasbourg

Two City College students, Iris Mendoza and Enrique Zapata, received full scholarships valued at $8,000 each to participate in the summer 2012 World Capitals Program, sponsored by the Global Institute of Comparative Studies at Chancellor University. The students complete a demanding global studies curriculum comparing cultures, economies, and political institutions in Berlin, Paris, and Strasbourg. Students also attend lectures at the European Union, visit international organizations, and receive lectures from high level executives at multinational corporations.

It was the experience of a lifetime.

Josh Higgins served as the Graphic Design Director for Obama’s 2012 Re-election Campaign. Josh oversaw all the marketing for the re-election effort with the exception of video and writing.

“My first week, I was on the phone with the President,” Higgins said.

“To hear that voice on the other end of the phone is so surreal.” Higgins consulted with Obama’s advising team to develop the branding strategy for the President’s re-election. He also worked on the design of the White House Christmas cards.

Higgins gives much of the credit of his success to City’s own award-winning Graphic Design professor Candice López. Higgins

shared, “I never had a teacher who inspired me the way she did, the way

she talked about design. She has so much passion that it radiates; it’s

intoxicating.”

Josh’s selection for this prestigious presidential honor was no surprise to Candice. Candice describes Josh’s design talent as unique, genuine, authentic and brilliant.

After visiting Josh at the Obama election headquarters in Chicago in June, Candice reflected on the gratitude she feels for teaching at City College. Candice said her “heart was bursting” when she received the photo of President Obama giving Josh a congratulatory hug following

the November election win. Candice reflected, “Imagine how inspiring

this photo will be to our students - that they can dream and make those

dreams happen!”

Higgins said it was the visual design program at City College that launched his career. He believes community colleges can be a path to success for anyone with the passion, desire and quality instructors like Candice to make it happen.

With his design and organizational skills, Higgins also helped to raise $60,000 dollars for Hurricane Katrina victims, and aided people devastated by the 2007 San Diego wildfires and the earthquake in Haiti.

In April, the San Diego City College Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team was named the 2012 SIFE Western Regional Champions in Hollywood, CA. Competing in regional championships for 19 years, the City College SIFE Team has won 18 consecutive championships.

Carrying out the SIFE mission to “serve the community through outreach programs”, City’s dedicated 68 member SIFE team of business interns worked on 12 projects this academic year, completing 5,000 hours of community service.

The team’s projects included teaching financial literacy to Generation Y high school and college students, collecting 13,000 pounds of food to stock two food pantries, and developing its Don’t Be A Bully project, in which the SIFE interns helped increase awareness, teach prevention, and educate elementary school-aged children about the impact of bullying.

A proud moment for Professor Laura Castañeda and the City College Radio/TV Department as six of their students won in multiple categories at the June, 2012 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Pacific Southwest Emmy Awards. While the Emmy Awards recognize outstanding achievements in television, the goal is to encourage the pursuit of excellence by focusing public attention on outstanding cultural, educational, technological, entertainment, news and informational achievements in television. The Pacific Southwest region includes San Diego, Bakersfield, Palm Springs, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Santa Maria, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada.

California Voters OK Tax Hike for EducationConstance Carroll, Chancellor of the San Diego Community College District (SDCCD), said passage of Prop 30 shows that California voters understand the value of community colleges in providing workforce training. After turning away 30,000 students because of funding cuts, SDCC next spring will be able to restore 150-180 classes that were eliminated in workforce training, general education, and basic skills. “That’s not a complete restoration by any means. But it is a step in the right direction,” Carroll said.

Veterans Service Center

President Terry Burgess cut the ribbon to officially open the Veterans Service Center (VSC) at San Diego City College on September 27, 2012. The mission of the VSC is to provide a welcoming environment for our military men and women as they transition from military life to academic life. The VSC services include internet accessible computers, books, referrals, peer support/mentoring, and workshops.

Associated Students Government

Student AdvocacyThe Associated Students Government (ASG) at San Diego City College finances, organizes, and directs many student sponsored programs and activities at City College throughout the year. ASG works together with the InterClub Council (ICC) to host events, promote leadership trainings, and advocate for students.

This year ASG/ICC helped register students to vote and provided information about key legislative issues. They voiced student concerns with elected leaders in Sacramento, including meeting with Governor Jerry Brown. In the spring, ASG/ICC members attended the Student Senate for California Community Colleges Conference in Ontario. ASG President Daniel Caldera noted the three top accomplishments of the year as helping to approve a $1 increase for Student Health fees, donating resources to the Student Health Services Center, and aiding the statewide drive for the passage of Proposition 30.

A Look Back to the Beginning...

What’s in a Name?

1961 The present name of San Diego City College was established by a vote of the Board of Education of the San Diego Unified School District on February 21, 1961.

1948 The Vocational college classes were consolidated into the Business and Technical Center (B&T), under Walter Thatcher, at the old Lincoln School building at 12th and E. In 1948, the name of the athletic teams was changed by the Associated Students from “Jaybirds” to “Knights” and the school newspaper from “Jay Sees,” to “Fortknightly.”

1954The three centers were merged into the San Diego Junior College and Vocational School under a single president, Walter Thatcher.

1956 All junior college classes were moved out of the high school to the new A and T buildings on the south side of Russ Boulevard.

1957 On June 4, 1957, the Board of Education changed the name to San Diego Junior College.

1938 The San Diego Vocational Junior College was established under Walter L. Thatcher as a second center of the Junior College Division. The Business Division of the Vocational College held classes in the Spreckels Building downtown. The Trade Division of the Vocational College held classes at 348 West Market. The Aircraft Technical Division of the Vocational College expanded into the Business and Technical Center.

1939The San Diego Evening Junior College was established as a third center of the Junior College Division.

1946 The Junior College Division moved back to the high school on Russ Boulevard, and its name was changed to the Applied Arts and Science Center (AA&S), a third center along with the Vocational College and the Evening College centers.

1914 San Diego Junior College was established by the Board of Education as a two-year extension of the high school, and classes began in September 1914 in San Diego High School, the “Old Gray Castle” that had been built in 1907 on Russ Boulevard.

1935 The name was changed to Junior College Division of San Diego State College. Its classes were located in the San Diego State Teachers College on Park Boulevard after 1921, and then at the Teachers College on College Avenue after 1931. The Junior College’s name changed in 1935 when the Teachers College changed its name to San Diego State College.

Reproduced here is the front page of the earliest available issue of The Fortknightly, No. 1 of Vol. 3 from 1947. Volumes 1 and 2 disappeared long ago. There were no newspapers before 1946. When the Junior College was located in the high school (1914-21), there was only The Russ newspaper, and from 1921-45, there was only the State College newspaper, The Paper Lantern.

This October 1, 1947 front page announces the Inaugural Ball at the Imig Manor where many Junior College social functions were held. Larry Imig opened this hotel on El Cajon Boulevard in 1946. It has recently undergone a rebirth and restoration as the Lafayette Hotel.
