Straight cutting canola is gaining momentum.Pod shatter technology is only one step in the process. See p. 24 for details.

Seeding rate really matters.Between seedling survival rate and varying TKW, careful calculations are required. See p. 32 for details.

Clubroot ResistanceClubroot is expanding rapidly in Alberta. It’s a major issue throughout the Parkland and has been found in the Foothills and Grassland regions.

The challenge with clubroot is that once it’s in a field, it’s in that field forever: resting spores can survive in the soil for 20 years and there are no chemical solutions. Here are four key ways to combat clubroot:

• Long rotations. It’s difficult to do when canola is the main earner, but short rotations encourage disease buildup and increase the severity of infestation.

• Equipment sanitation. Roughly 200 pounds of soil can be carried out of a field on one piece of tillage equipment. It’s a major cause of disease spread, so clean your machines between fields!

• Eliminate cruciferous volunteers and weeds. Take away hosts in non-canola years.

• Plant clubroot resistant canola. UFA carries a number of clubroot resistant canola hybrids designed to help you get good yields in infected fields.

Resistance is fragile! In 2014, provincial researchers discovered that some clubroot resistant canola varieties were beginning to falter because new strains of the disease are starting to establish. Genetic resistance is at risk and can break down quickly when the technology is overused. Consult your local UFA CAM for more information.

Pod Shatter TechnologyStraight cutting canola is about saving time and money during harvest. It is also about yield increase as the pods are filling longer, resulting in higher yields vs. the 60% swath timing. Seed companies are responding to the growing popularity of straight cutting, or direct combining, by developing hybrids with pod shatter technology – varieties with pods that will hold to the plant through maturity and shatter less during the harvest process.

If you want to straight cut, choosing a canola with pod shatter technology is the first step, but not the only one. Here are other considerations:

1. Field selection. Even, uniform crop maturity is key to successful straight cutting, so choose a field with fairly low variability for these varieties.

2. Harvest conditions. Be prepared to swath if harvest conditions are working against straight cutting. For example:

a. Frost is forecast and the crop isn’t sufficiently dried down.

b. Excessive green undergrowth will plug the combine.

3. Harvest timing. A recent study found that harvest timing was more important than variety (including pod shatter varieties) when it comes to minimizing losses*, so you may want to think about a pre-harvest application to even out crop variability.

4. Combine settings. Header choice and configuration, reel speed vis-à-vis travel speed, cutter height – make sure your equipment is set to reduce shattering as much as possible during a straight cut operation.

5. Variety characteristics. Some canola varieties that don’t have pod shatter technology do have characteristics that make them equally good straight cut choices. Check seed company listings and local trial data.

New technology and proven agronomic techniques bring straight cutting canola to more producers.

Cutworm and Flea Beetle Control OptionsReports of cutworm damage in Alberta were still being made late into June 2016! Cutworms and flea beetles can devastate young canola crops before you can get the sprayer out. So if you know that you are in a high-risk region and need added protection, or want to know what happened in your local area so you make the right decision, contact your local CAM about additional seed treatment options.

• Fortenza for cutworm control.

• Lumiderm – excellent control of cutworms and improved consistency of protection against flea beetles.

• Visivio – for additional control of both striped and crucifer flea beetles.

These seed treatments are for use in commercial facilities only, so you need to place your order before February 10, 2017*.

* Dates may vary by supplier – early ordering ensures earlier delivery of your seed.

Herbicide Systems and Herbicide Resistant WeedsIn the most recent Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada weed survey (2014/15 in Saskatchewan), volunteer canola moved up from the number 14 position to take the number 4 spot.

That’s kind of sobering, particularly when you realize that probably every volunteer canola plant is resistant to Roundup, Liberty or one of the Clearfield system herbicides.

Herbicide resistant (HR) weed management is simply a fact of modern-day farming, and with the widespread use of herbicide tolerant cropping systems and the sheer number of canola acres out there, it’s more important than ever.

Here are five best practices for effective HR management:

1. Control weeds early.

2. Rotate herbicide groups regularly – this includes rotating canola systems.

3. Use herbicide mixtures and sequences.

4. Scout pre and post application and look for suspicious escapes.

5. Keep good records – know your field histories so you know what to look for.

Canola systems are a very useful tool in your resistance management plan. And you may be pleasantly surprised to see just how well some of the newer varieties in some systems can yield. Want to know more? Talk to your local UFA CAM today.

Tips For Effective Canola Stand EstablishmentToday’s canola hybrids offer genetic packages that are head and shoulders above varieties from just five or 10 years ago. Combine that with advances in seed treatments and the incredible capabilities of precision seeding equipment and it’s easy to see how best management practices for stand establishment can get left by the wayside.

The reality is, there’s a lot you can do to before you load the seeder to ensure your canola gets out of the ground quickly and evenly to achieve strong stand establishment. Here are three top tips:

1. Seeding rate (SR). What many people don’t think about when calculating seeding rate is how many seedlings just aren’t going to make it past the first couple of weeks. Canola plants are notoriously poor early-season competitors and a survival rate of 50% to 60% is pretty normal, regardless of variety. Your seeding rate should be based on achieving seven to 10 plants per square foot after that 40% to 50% of seedlings has died (based on a 50 - 60% survival rate).

The Canola Council of Canada offers this formula:

SR (lb/acre) = [9.6 x desired plant density x TSW (grams)] / est. % seed survival (use whole number)

(TSW = thousand seed weight)

Example #1 If the TSW of your seed lot is 4 grams, desired plant population is eight plants per sq. ft. and estimated seed survival is 50%, the seeding rate should be 6.1 pounds per acre.

(9.6 x 8 x 4 grams) / 50 = 6.1 lb./acre

Example #2 If the TSW is 6.5 grams: (9.6 x 8 x 6.5 grams) / 50 = 10 lb./acre

2. Seeding depth. Even the new seeders need calibrating and check them as you go. Make sure you get good seed-to-soil contact and that you’re seeding no deeper than an inch or the plant will have to expend too much energy getting out of the ground, emerging weakened and more vulnerable to attack from disease and insects, and to weather stressors.

3. Seeding date. Spring weather has been pretty erratic over the last few years, but one thing that hasn’t changed is that most growers want to get the canola in first and early. Under ideal conditions, canola should be up and out within a week or two. But if it’s too cold or snow or frost hits, it can take much longer. The plant will expend too much energy, and again, it’s vulnerable to damage from disease and insects. To improve your emergence percentage when seeding shallower, slow down and plant mid-May vs. last week of April.

Make the most of your genetics!

The Canola Council of Canada is gunning to increase Canada’s canola output to 26MMT total production with average yields of 52 bu./ac. by the year 2025.

It’s called the “52 by 2025” plan and, given current average canola yield is 34 bu./ac., the CCC admits it’s bold, but it’s also achievable.

How? The CCC identifies five agronomic practice areas where yield increases can be achieved – from harvest management to fertility to improving on stand establishment.

But it’s genetics where the CCC sees the biggest opportunity for gains, predicting as much as an 8 bu./ac. yield gain is possible through new varieties in trial now (visit keepitcoming.ca and click on the “How We’ll Get There” button or scan the QR code below).

At UFA, we believe 52 by 2025 is possible and we’re aiming to bring you the best canola hybrid genetics and agronomic support as part of this movement. Call your local CAM today and let us help you achieve your target!
