Introduction

This manual is your guide to planter adjustments forachieving specific seed population, fertilizer density andtreatment density targets.

Although some setup/adjustment material herein isrepeated from the planter Operator Manuals, you need tobe thoroughly familiar with planter operations andadjustments before applying rate data from this manual.

Models CoveredThis manual covers the following Great Plains 16-rowplanter models. Not all models are available in all locales.

Setting Material RatesRefer to Figure 1The YP1630F has three ground drive systems ( , , )and three metering systems. Two of the meteringsystems share a drive system. Details for rate settings, and rate charts, are found in this manual. This pageprovides an overview of the systems.

Planting (Seed) Rate (page 2)Seed rate is controlled by Range and Transmissionsprocket pairings ( , ) on each of two separate wingground drive systems ( , ) and by seed meterconfiguration at each row ( , hidden by hopper). Theseed monitor console reports field rates for most seedtypes.

Fertilizer Rate (page 17)Dry fertilizer rate, from the central hopper, is controlledby a variable rate gear box under the left side of thehopper. The associated ground drive , under the rightside, has no adjustments. Fertilizer is delivered by the airsystem, with blockage detection at the rows. The airsystem must be adjusted to optimal pressure, but doesnot adjust rate.

Treatment Rate (page 26, Option)Planters with the optional second row hopper can delivera variety of granular materials with this system. Rate iscontrolled by a knob and dial at each row. Thetreatment meters have an agitator roller which shares theseed drive system, but changes in seed rate sprocketshave only a minor effect on treatment rate.

About the ChartsThe rate charts are independent of planter width and rowspacing. All charts except treatment are relativelyinsensitive to ground speed.

Note: Units of Measure:This manual provides most values in dual units ofmeasure (metric and U.S. customary).

Seed Rate

Rates are set separately for seed, fertilizer (page 17) andtreatments (Option, page 26).

Seed rate is determined by:

1. consulting the seed rate charts,

2. installing the correct meter (in the case of fingermeters, the appropriate finger sets, inserts andbrushes, and in the case of the brush meter, theappropriate seed plates),

3. setting the Range and Transmission driving/drivensprocket combinations on each wing, and

4. checking the rate.

There are separate charts for brush and finger pickupmeters. If you are unfamiliar with the charts, see“Reading a Brush Meter Chart” below or “Reading aBrush Meter Chart” on page 4.

To change meters, see “Exchanging Meters” in theOperator manual.

About Finger Meter ChartsThe charts are for meters with 12-fingers, and apply toboth Corn and Sunflower configurations.

Some sizes of sunflower seeds meter more reliably withthe corn finger set, insert and brush. See the table below.See the Operator manual (401-832M) for meterreconfiguration instructions.

Seed Drive SetupWith the meters set up, the rate is adjusted by separateRange and Transmission sprocket pairing at a grounddrive on each wing.

Sprocket StorageRefer to Figure 4Each wing has a pair of trees containing both Rangeand Transmission sprockets for that wing.

Note: The planter includes a standard set of sprocketscommon to several implement models. Somesprockets may not be used in presently offeredYP1630F configurations.

Range SetupRefer to Figure 5Range provides coarse seed rate control, and uses onlyDriving:Driven sprocket combinations:30T:20T or 30T:30T.

To change Range drive:

1. Consult the seed rate chart for your crop, meter, andfinger or cell count.

2. For your desired seed population, find the Rangesprocket pairing at the top of the chart.

3. Loosen the tensioning idler to obtain chain slack.

4. Remove the lynch pins at each Range sprocketthat needs to be changed.

5. Exchange sprockets with those required from thestorage trees. Re-install pins.

6. Engage the idler for 6 to 7 mm (1⁄4 inch) of chainslack at longest chain span.

7. Repeat for other wing.

Transmission SetupRefer to Figure 6Range provides fine seed rate control, and uses onlypairings from Sprocket sizes:17T, 19T, 23T, 24T, 25T, 26T, 27T, 28TPairings are always unequal except for 23T:23T

6. Engage the idler for 13 mm (1⁄2 inch) of chain slackat longest chain span.

7. Repeat for other wing.

Checking Planting RateSingulated seed charts are based on cleaned and sizedseed singulated with the recommended meter and wheelor finger count. Extreme seed size variations, foreignmaterial and solid conditions can affect the planting rate.

Any material difference between chart and field ratesimplies a mechanical malfunction, a planter setup error, unsuitable planting conditions (such as excessive wheelslippage) or extremely worn planter components.

You can verify your setup and planter performance bymeasuring seed placement and spacing over a relativelyshort distance.

The columns to the right provide example data for a ratecheck, in metric units and similar example in U.S.customary units.

Checking Singulated Rates1. Determine the sample distance to check. Find your

row spacing in the table at right.

2. Note the number of rows to sample. Adjust theplanting depth to a shallow setting on one or twooutside rows (per table). Tie up the press wheelarms with wire or bungee to prevent furrow closure.

3. Decide whether to use 1/1000th or 1/200th of ahectare or acre as the sample size. 1/200th providesa more accurate sample.

4. Configure the planter for the chart rate, either usingthe chart settings for sprockets, or, with hydraulicdrive, selecting the rate on the seed monitor.

5. Plant at the desired planting speed for slightly morethan the computed sample run length.

6. Measure off the sample distance, balanced inbetween where seeding started and stopped.

7. Count the number of seeds over the distancemeasured. Also note the consistency of the seedspacing.

8. Compute the rate for a full acre or hectare.

For a 1/1000th sample, multiply the counted seedsby 1000.

For a 1/200th sample, multiply the counted seeds by200.

9. If the field and chart rates vary by more than a fewpercent, re-check planter setup, including meterwheel or finger count, air system, tire size, tirepressures, sprocket or hydraulic drive setup, chainslack, etc. If seed spacing is irregular, this suggestsa seed delivery problem, and not a rate setupproblem.

10. While planting, pay attention to the seed monitor. Inaddition to confirming the single-row furrow check, itwill also provide field rate data on all the other rows, and alert you to any irregularities or stoppages.

Fertilizer Rate

This section covers application of granular dry fertilizerfrom the central hopper. For application of granularfertilizer using the optional per-row Treatment hoppers,“Treatment Rate (Option)” on page 26.

Refer to Figure 8The dry fertilizer system is powered by a dedicatedground drive wheel , which has a lock-up capability, butno rate adjustments.

Coarse fertilizer rate is set by Range gears on theright side of the meter.

Fine rate is set by a crank adjuster on the gearbox.

A second crank , is used for system calibration.

There are four steps to obtaining the target weight offertilizer kg per hectare (or pounds per acre):

1. Find your target rate in the charts beginning onpage 22. If you have a choice of charts, for mostconsistent results, pick one that results in a variablerate gearbox value between 30 and 70.

2. If you know the density of your material, compare itto the material used to develop the chart. If theydiffer by more than a few percent, you may want tostart with a different chart rate (see “DensityAdjustment” on page 19).

3. Set the Final Drive Range on the meter (page 18).

4. Set the Variable Rate Gearbox (page 18).

5. Calibrate. See “Fertilizer Meter Calibration” onpage 19.

Note: The PM400 monitor can report blockage of fertilizerflow at the rows, and shaft under/over-speed, butdoes not measure rate.

Reading a Fertilizer Rate Charta. Choose the Low or High Range chart, favoring the

chart which places your initial adjuster setting closerto the center of the 30 to 70 scale.

b. Note the final Range gear sprocket combination.

c. Note the reference Material Density. If your materialdensity is significantly different from the referencematerial, a Density Adjustment may save time.

d. Find your target field application rate in kilograms perhectare or pounds per acre. If using a DensityAdjustment, you’ll use different target rate to begincalibration.

e. Note the suggested initial gearbox setting.

Fertilizer Range GearsRefer to Figure 9The meter flute shaft is driven by the agitator shaftthrough a pair of interchangeable gears , . Thepositioning of these gears creates two final drive ranges.

Each rate chart is based on a specific Final Drive Range. The Ranges are:

• “High” range, which is used for higher fertilizer rates

• “Low” range, which is used for lower fertilizer rates

The two seed meter shafts are labelled “DRIVING” and“DRIVEN”.The “DRIVING” shaft is the upper/forward shaft. The “DRIVEN” shaft is the lower/rear shaft.

Refer to the Seed Rate Chart (or Fertilizer Rate Chart),the table below, and Figure 9 for setting the seed meterfinal drive range.

1. Remove the lynch pins from the gear ends of bothshafts.

2. Remove and position the gears as shown in the tableabove.

3. Secure with lynch pins.

Setting Variable Rate GearboxThe variable rate gearbox allows an arbitrarily variablemeter drive speed to attain a wide range of meteringrates. The ratio of gearbox input speed to output speed iscontrolled by the position of a gearbox control arm. Thecontrol arm has an indicator that points to a scalemarked in degrees. The Fertilizer Rate Charts show therate for each degree setting.

Refer to the rate charts and set the variable rate gearboxcontrol arm to its scale setting for the target rate.

To adjust the Variable Rate Gearbox:

Refer to Figure 101. Remove the hairpin cotter securing the gearbox

adjustment crank .

2. Rotate crank until the control arm indicator pointsto the scale setting that matches the rate from thechart, or as determined by calibration.

3. Re-insert the hairpin cotter.

Note: The variable rate gearbox operates optimallybetween 30 and 70. If your rate is listed on both theLow Range and High Range charts, select thechart where your rate results in a gearbox controlarm setting between 30 and 70. Settings below 20degrees are not recommended. When the controlarm is set above 70 degrees, large movements ofthe arm result in small changes in rate.

Fertilizer Meter CalibrationThe rate charts are based on 11-52-0 dry fertilizer with adensity of 0.96 kg/liter (60 pounds per cubic foot).

Material of a different density will meter at aproportionately different rate. Heavier material has ahigher rate for the same setting. Lighter has a lower ratefor the same setting.

Material with a different particle shape or cohesion maymeter at a slightly different rate, even if the densitymatches the charts.

Great Plains strongly recommends calibrating for theexact material you intend to apply. Adjusting first fordensity may allow the calibration to arrive at your desiredrate with fewer samples.

Density AdjustmentIf your material density differs from the chart value bymore than a few percent, pick a different initial chart rate,on an inverse proportion basis:

Calibration Steps

Possible Agricultural Chemical Hazards:Obey manufacturer or grower recommendations for safetyequipment and protective gear when working with and aroundfertilizer.

1. Load enough fertilizer for at least 1⁄10 hectare (or 1⁄10acre) plus an extra 35 to 45 Kg (75 to 100 pounds).

Note: Do NOT run the fan during calibration.

2. Determine the initial Range and Gearbox settingsfrom charts, with any density adjustment.

3. Set the Range gears (page 18).

4. Set the Gearbox arm (page 18).

Refer to Figure 11 on page 195. Un-pin the calibration crank at its storage

location . Re-pin it on the calibration crankshaft .

6. Empty the calibration bag (part number 816-585C).Check that the digital scale (part number 891-209C)is operating correctly.

Refer to Figure 127. At the base of the meter, open the calibration

door @. Attach the bag.

8. Operate the calibration crank for a few turns, untilfertilizer fills the meter flutes and is smoothly flowinginto the bag. Stop. Remove the bag.

Note: A clicking sound from the ratchet sprocket in theground drive is normal. The ground drive wheelshould not turn.

9. Empty the bag into the hopper. Weigh the emptybag.

10. Re-attach the bag to the meter.

11. Operate the crank, at one to two revolutions persecond, for the number of revolutions shown in thetable at right.

Machine Damage and Rate Risks:Rotate calibration crank only in the COUNTERCLOCKWISEdirection. Operating in reverse can cause gearbox damage.

Note: A longer calibration is always more accurate, especially for low rates and small seeds.1⁄10 hectare or acre is easy to calculate and is aminimum calibration run.

Loss of Material Risk:Do not open the door under the DRIVING gear. This is theclean-out door. Opening this door drains the hopper. Once theclean-out door is open it is difficult to stop material flow untilthe hopper is empty, and impossible to close it with a seal tightenough for application.

The right column contains the starting values of anexample for the following steps, in Metric and U.S.customary (“USc”) units.

12. Accurately weigh the bag plus material. Subtract theempty bag weight to determine the application ratefor 1⁄10 hectare (or 1⁄10 acre).

13. Multiply the sample size by 10 to determineapplication rate per hectare (acre) at the currentvariable rate gearbox setting.

If the calibrated rate matches the target rate, skip tostep 18. Otherwise…

14. Determine a ratio to use for a new setting.

Note: The effect of the gearbox adjuster is nearly linear inthe 30 to 70 range of the scale.

15. Subtract the calibrated rate per hectare (or acre)from the target rate to determine a correctiondifference.

16. Adjust the control arm by the number of degreesneeded to adjust for the calibration difference.

17. Run the calibration again, starting at step 9, usingthe new Variable Rate Gearbox scale setting. Thisvalidates the gearbox adjustment.

18. Remove and store the calibration crank. Wipe downthe calibration door, seal and lower face of meter.Close the calibration door. Empty the bag into thehopper.

This completes fertilizer rate calibration.

Treatment Rate (Option)

This section covers application of granular drytreatments using the optional on-row treatment hoppers.Treatments may include insecticide, herbicide and othersmall granular or pelletized materials.

Agricultural Chemical Hazard:Follow all chemical supplier precautions for handlingtreatments. Wear protective equipment prescribed for thecurrent material, and for all previous materials used sincelast thorough hopper clean-out. Read and follow materiallabel directions. Obtain and retain MSDSa information for thepresent and recent materials. Many treatments are extremelyhazardous and can cause disabling or fatal injury.

Refer to Figure 13 and Refer to Figure 14 on page 27Treatment application rate is determined by acombination of:

• meter dial setting(which controls the meter gate opening), and

• field speed(application rate is inversely proportional to fieldspeed).

The system may be uncoupled at the clutch if notreatment is being applied.

The treatment meter has an agitator powered by theseed meter drive, but treatment application rate isrelativelyb insensitive to agitator rpm.

There are four steps to obtaining the target treatmentweight in kg per hectare (or pounds per acre):

1. Find your target rate, for your planned field speed, inthe charts beginning on page 30.

2. Perform a Gate Calibration (see Operator manual) atthe start of each season, or if one or more rows ismetering at unexpected rates.

3. Perform a Rate Calibration (page 28).

a. MSDS - Material Safety Data Sheetb. Finer materials with low cohesion may flow when the planter is stopped. Set meters to “00” to prevent material loss.

Treatment Compatibility

Refer to Figure 14 (which depicts a bottom view of the meterhousing and gate, with gate retainer removed for clarity)Flow rate is controlled by tapered opening in theadjustable gate.

Use only granular materials that flow easily and whichhave a maximum particle dimension smaller than:

4.8 mm (3⁄16 inch, 0.19 inch)maximum dimension. Materials larger than this cannotpass through the slot in the meter housing, at any metersetting.

Materials with a maximum particle dimension of:1.4 mm (3⁄64 inch, 0.59 inch)

or less can flow at meter setting 5 and above.

Materials from 1.4 mm to 4.8 mm encounter a lower gatesetting limit at which they can flow. The material rategoes to zero before reaching meter setting 10.

Reading a Treatment Rate ChartRefer to chart excerpts at right.

1. Find the chart for your material and rowspacing .

Note: If there is no chart for your specific material, useany chart and rely on Rate Calibration to determinea final meter setting.

2. Find a column for the field speed at which youintend to plant and/or apply treatment. If your exactspeed is not listed, rely on Rate Calibration todetermine final meter setting.

3. Find your intended application rate (TargetRate inthe examples) in kg/ha or lbs/ac in the selectedspeed column.

4. Find the suggested initial dial value in the MeterSetting column. This is PriorDial in the examples.

Columns are also provided for single row rates. Theseare useful for estimating sample sizes during RateCalibration, and may be useful should you desire tocreate your own charts for alternate speeds.

The data at right is used in the example calibrationcalculations on page 29.

Treatment Rate CalibrationTreatment Rate calibration is different from treatmentGate calibration. Gate calibration is a seasonal activity, and is described in the Operator manual.

Rate calibration requires:

• a precise scale for small weight values (the digitalscale provided for fertilizer calibration may be toocoarse);

• small plastic bags for sample collection at each row;and,

• a representative field on which a 1000 m or 1000 footpass can be made, with openers in the ground, at yourintended planting/application speed.

Treatment Rate Calibration Steps1. Move the planter to the edge of the test field area.

2. Mark a course of known length that is at least 300 min length. A course of exactly 1000 m or 1000 feetsimplifies calculations.

3. Determine the rows to sample for treatment ratecalibration. A sample of three rows improves thereliability of the sample data.

4. Set the treatment meters for these rows to “00”.

Refer to Figure 155. Disengage the treatment drive clutches at all other

rows. If the tested rows are all on the same wing, lock up the ground drive for the other wing. See theOperator manual for drive couple and ground drivelock-up details.

6. Disengage all seed meter clutches not alreadydisabled by lock-up. Disengage all treatment meterclutches at rows not being tested (unlessdisengaged by drive lock-up).

7. Lock up the fertilizer ground drive.

8. Lower the planter rows into the ground.

Wear protective equipment for this and all followingsteps.

9. At the rows identified in step 3, load a small amountof treatment material, about twice the amountexpected to be metered over the course length. Thecharts, starting on page 30, show the kg or ouncesexpected for one row.

Mis-application Risk:Speed and distance matter. Treatment flow (per minute) isproportional to meter gate opening (dial setting), but isrelatively constant per minute, which makes it inverselyproportional to field speed. Further, material is flowing duringinitial acceleration, at a higher net rate. Sample collectionmust be performed at actual intended planting/applicationspeed, or the calibrated meter setting will not provide thedesired application rate. The sample must also be collectedover a sufficient distance to minimize errors due to theelevated rate at start up.

Agricultural Chemical Hazard:Follow all chemical supplier precautions for handlingtreatments. Wear protective equipment prescribed for thecurrent material, and for all previous materials used sincelast thorough hopper clean-out. Read and follow materiallabel directions. Obtain and retain Material Safety Data Sheet(MSDS) information for the present and recent materials. Many treatments are extremely hazardous and can causedisabling or fatal injury.

Collect A Treatment Sample

Refer to Figure 15 on page 2811. At the sampling rows identified in step 3, wearing

suitable protective equipment, remove thediffuser .

12. Securely attach an empty plastic bag to the tube.

Refer to Figure 1613. Set the treatment meter dials to the initial setting

from the charts, or the NextDial setting to be sampled.Make a note of this setting, as it is needed incalculations.

14. Start the tractor. Accelerate briskly to field speed.Stop at the end of the course.

15. Set the dials to “00” on the sampled rows, to preventfurther material from dribbling into the sample bags.

16. Wearing suitable protective equipment, remove, weigh and record the weight of the sample bags.Empty each bag back into its hopper.

Calculate the Treatment RateThe examples used are based on the applicationexample data from page 27, and the empty bag weightsfrom step 10.

17. Remove and weigh all the sample bags. This is the:GrossWeight

18. Determine net weight of metered material.

19. Determine the net weight per row:

20. Use a scaling factor to determine the TestRate:70 cm Hectare scaling factor: 14.29×30 inch Acre scaling factor: 17.42×

21. Determine the percent deviation (a correction factor):

22. Use the correction factor to determine the next dialsetting to test:

23. If the deviation is less than 1.5%, or within your ownallowable tolerances, calibration is complete.Otherwise, run another test, using the calculatedNextDial setting, starting at step 12.

Finger Meter Brush AdjustmentThe brush reduces or eliminates “doubles” (deliveringtwo seeds per finger), but if set too aggressively cancause “skips” (delivering no seed on some fingers). Asneeded, adjust for minimal doubles and skips.

Refer to Figure 17The adjustable brush provides additional flexibility toaccommodate a wide range of seed sizes. Use leverto gently rotate the brush into position.

The settings range from 1 to 5 with detents at each halfstep, for a total of 9 detents. Although the numbers aremolded into the meter housing, only “1” and “5” may bevisible. To ensure consistency, rotate the lever fullycounter-clockwise “1”, and count detents as you advanceit to the desired setting.

Use the general guidelines in the table below to adjustthe brush position to your seed size and shape. Thenumbers listed correspond to the numbers printed on theouter housing of your meter.

If there is a decal on your meter, its units are in poundsper 80 000 seed bag. The table below includes seedsper pound and seeds per kilogram.

Note: These instructions describe the current fingerpickup meter shipped with new Great Plainsplanters, which has an integrated adjustment leverfor the brush. If you have added pre-existing fingermeters after purchase, there is some chance thatyou may have the previous model meter, adjustedby screwdriver rather than lever. If so, rely oncounting detents to determine the setting. Not allhave 9 detents.
