Estate Planning through thePrincess Alice Society

Named after our beloved elephant who came to the Zoo in 1916, the Princess Alice Society recognizes and honors donors who have included Utah’s Hogle Zoo in their estate plans. Including the Zoo in your estate plans not only helps to meet philanthropic needs, but also provides many benefits today, including tax savings, increased cash flow or reduced estate taxes. With your planned gift, you can ensure the Zoo will have adequate funds to sustain the highest standards of animal care in future years.

Please contact our Development Department to include Hogle Zoo in your long-range financial planning (801)584-1787.

Introducing

Hogle Zoo’s Frightfully Fun, Family Festival of Lights!

I n 2007, Hogle Zoo unveiled ZooLights!, which has become a popular family tradition for

many each December. Based on the popularity of ZooLights!, we are excited to introduce a similar evening light event, but this time centered around another popular holiday -

Halloween. We are affectionately calling this event: BooLights!

As a young boy growing up in the 1960s, my family celebrated Halloween by putting a pumpkin or two on the step of our front porch and, of course, my siblings and I did the obligatory ‘trick-or-treating’ thing every October

31. Today, Halloween has grown to be so much more! According to Forbes magazine, ‘two out of every three adults feel Halloween is a holiday for them - and not just kids.’ And although pumpkins remain essential, Halloween decorations have become more elaborate now that adults, and millennials, especially, have taken over Halloween – for example, one in two Americans expect to decorate their home or yard this year. The National Retail Federation is predicting that Halloween spending will hit $6.9 billion in 2016. That’s up a stunning 18 percent from last year’s estimated $5.8 billion bonanza. Folks, Halloween is a BIG deal!

With the proliferation of scary haunted houses in the market targeting these adults, combined with Halloween’s overwhelming popularity, we felt the time was right to introduce a softer, more ‘family-friendly’ Halloween community event. We believe you’ll enjoy experiencing all that BooLights! has to offer – a delightfully spooky walkthrough light extravaganza that’s fun for all ages. There will be 129 lighted displays located throughout much of Zoo grounds with more than 75 percent animated! You can also anticipate much of what we always provide at our events -- fun, educational and safe activities for Utah families. And did I mention fun? Here’s just a sampling of what‘s in store for you and your family:

Learning Through Training and Positive Reinforcementat Utah’s Hogle Zoo

At Utah’s Hogle Zoo, school is always in session for our animals! Much like people,

each animal learns differently, so it’s important for our keepers to know their animals and how they learn! We like to encourage our animals to have an active role in their care. When an animal willingly participates in its daily husbandry and medical care, there is decrease-stress for both the animals and the keepers. We do this through positive reinforcement.

Every animal at the Zoo learns through positive reinforcement. This means using praise and/or treats to

reward the animal for doing something correctly. Associating good things with a behavior means they are more likely to repeat the behavior again when asked. Positive reinforcement helps our animals learn many behaviors that keep them healthy and mentally stimulated.

For example, our apes are voracious learners and get trained multiple times a day. Apes are highly intelligent animals that thrive on mental stimulation. Our apes know a vast variety of behaviors that serve many purposes. Some of the behaviors include: voluntary injections that help facilitate medical procedures, presentation of various body parts,

ranging from head, shoulders, knees and toes, to allow visual checkups and the ability to retrieve and trade back various objects to keepers!

Much like working out a math equation, apes problem solve to help them learn a new behavior. Problem solving, paired with positive reinforcement, enables them to understand what is being taught. When the apes are confused and are having trouble figuring out the behavior, keepers encourage them to try again. Once the apes learn their basic behaviors, keepers are able to use them as building blocks to learn more advanced behaviors. These behaviors also require a level of trust between the keeper and the animal. Trust is gained over time and through positive reinforcement.

Trust is incredibly important when training an animal, especially when the behavior it is learning isn’t very fun. Learning to voluntarily receive an injection is a very important part of an animals medical care, but let’s face it, no one enjoys getting a shot! Trust -- along with a bigger-than-normal reward, or “jackpot,” helps make learning the behavior more bearable, although not fun.

Not every behavior taught is for medical or husbandry purposes, but every behavior serves a very important purpose -- mental stimulation. All animals need mental, as well as physical stimulation, to be healthy, and the more mentally stimulated they are the more fun they are for you to watch! For example, you may see our sea lions

dancing for you during their training demonstrations. This is a fun behavior that is not only mentally stimulating for the animal, but also fun for us as trainers and you as the audience!

As you can see, learning plays a very important role in the well-

being of our animals here at the Zoo. Our animals receive the best care possible daily, by both our keepers and veterinary staff, but none of that would be possible without training and positive reinforcement.

C ue Bing – I’m Dreaming of a White…okay wait just one doggone minute, it’s only

October! Actually, the hard work began in earnest in August, installing lights and displays throughout grounds. Yup, Utah’s Hogle Zoo elves have been hard at work making everything spiffy and shiny for one of the Zoo’s largest and most popular events. And this year, can you believe it, we celebrate 10 years of presenting this fun, safe and very merry and bright event. We love ZooLights! – and, we

hope by now, you have made it one of your cherished family traditions.

To celebrate our 10th anniversary, ZooLights! will be brighter than ever! And we believe you’ll notice the difference. Trees throughout the Zoo will be wrapped just a little bit tighter and you can expect more entertainment, specialty food and crafts. And what would a visit to ZooLights! be without stopping by to share your Christmas gift list with the Jolly Old Elf himself at Santa’s Station, presented by Macy’s? More lights,

plus food, plus Santa, equals more FUN – and, thus, just that much more amazement!

The very popular ‘make-your-own-smore’ stations return to Oasis Plaza and look for ice carvers, carolers and more. Have you taken a selfie in the iconic tunnel spanning Emigration Creek? What have you been waiting for!

Utah’s Hogle Zoo is proud to present the 10th annual ZooLights! as our holiday gift to Utah families.

BY BRAD C. PARKIN, DIRECTOR OF MARKETING & CORPORATE RELATIONS

The community was in an uproar. Princess Alice, the Salt Lake City Zoo’s cantankerous Asian elephant, has escaped her enclosure at

Liberty Park a bit too frequently and is often seen wandering the nearby neighborhoods. City and zoo officials are frustrated and begin talking about a new home – and a stronger, more secure space for Princess Alice. It wasn’t long before Mr. and Mrs. James Hogle came to the rescue and donated a parcel of land located in the rural eastern foothills near the mouth of Emigration Canyon.

The year is 1931. Herbert Hoover is president, the Empire State Building opens as the world’s tallest building, the Star-Spangled Banner is adopted as the United States national anthem, Nevada legalizes gambling and, on August 1, newly renamed Hogle Zoo opens to a huge crowd of 14,000 Utahns, many of which arrived by public transportation.

From that day to the present, 85 years later, Hogle Zoo has enjoyed a rich legacy as a popular local attraction and family destination. Today, the Zoo draws more than 1.1 million visitors annually, and is recognized as both the most visited paid attraction in Salt Lake City and, by many, as Utah’s top family

destination.In 1948, the Zoo became

internationally known as headlines around the world announced the birth of “Shasta” the liger on May 7th. This cross between an African lion male and a Bengal tiger female would become the major attraction at the Zoo for the next 24 years. Hybrids such as ligers are discouraged today since the ranges of the lion (Africa) and the tiger (Asia) do not overlap. Zoos today focus on the careful breeding and propagation of endangered and threatened species as part of the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s Species Survival Plan. To learn more about the Species Survival Plan, visit aza.org.

The late sixties and early seventies saw Zoo development really take off. The south side of the Zoo was developed with the addition of the giraffe building, the feline building and the still-popular small animal building. The early eighties saw other improvements to Zoo grounds, including the development of Discoveryland, the fort and a new gift shop. The nineties brought the development of Primate Forest and much needed funding from the passing of Salt Lake County’s Zoo, Arts & Parks tax.

Since the year 2000, the

redevelopment of Utah’s Hogle Zoo is evident almost everywhere one looks throughout the grounds, thanks in no small measure to the support of Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County residents for the passage of two important bond initiatives in 2003 and 2008. Utah’s Hogle Zoo thanks you for your support. This funding created better homes for animals such as pachyderms, Asian cats, bears, African lions, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, pinnipeds and many other species; a state-of-the-art animal health center and wonderful guest amenities such as outdoor dining decks, a carousel and an expanded train ride.

So looking ahead…what’s next? There are exciting plans in the works as the Zoo enters into the next phase of development of its master plan. Please know that the management and staff of Utah’s Hogle Zoo will never stop improving the homes of its residents, providing the best care possible for its animals and creating varied experiences and special events for the Zoo’s valued guests.

Utah’s Hogle Zoo remains committed to its role as a leader in conservation, financially supporting and leading projects and initiatives both locally and worldwide. For more information about the Zoo’s ongoing conservation efforts, visit hoglezoo.org.

Suffice it to say that much more is in store, and you can be a part of it by visiting often and extending or upgrading your Utah’s Hogle Zoo membership.

Happy 85 years Utah’s Hogle Zoo! Let us rejoice in your rich history and accomplishments as we look forward to a bright and eventful future for all living things.

It’s “electric” here at Utah’s Hogle Zoo! We now provide two electric charging stations for our electric vehicle (EV) driving guests! With these quick chargers, you can receive a half charge in two hours and a full charge in four hours. Just imagine, coming to the Zoo and walking back out to a fully charged car! Pretty great, right? What’s better is that it is also free for Zoo patrons!

You will find the EV parking on the left-hand side of the parking lot on the 2nd row from the front. The parking spaces are clearly labeled with green paint and we do ask that only electric vehicles park in those places.
