A new lease on lifeScone’s Thoroughbred Hotel will open its doors to a new beginning. With new branding and a serious facelift, The Thoroughbred will provide the local area with a high-quality bakery, upmarket restaurant, bar and accommodation facilities. Peter Allen, a Victorian-based business developer, saw the opportunity on a previous employment stint within Scone and, given the prime location of the building and ample off-street parking, thought that the venue presented the perfect opportunity to provide the area with what it’s been missing. In addition to the development, Mr Allen has taken a unique path with the interior design and marketing of the business, utilising the opportunity and sticking with the theme of the building by planning to showcase the local racing and breeding history, past and present.

One particular local equine legend, Mr Bill Howey, has been assisting Mr Allen and local design and marketing consultant Kriston Harris, with the project. The connection came at impeccable timing, coinciding with Mr Howey’s recent launch of his new book: A History of Thoroughbred Breeding in the Upper Hunter Valley.

On completion of the renovations, The Thoroughbred will re-open its doors with a fully-fledged bakery, formal and casual dining, bar and VIP lounge, and 12 comfortable rooms for accommodation.

CWA promoting awarenessScone and District Country Women’s Association Branch is hosting a luncheon to raise awareness of domestic violence and Lyme disease. It’s part of the organisation’s National Awareness Week which raises awareness of different issues each year. Solicitor Joplin Higgins will speak on the issue of domestic violence while Lyme disease sufferer Tahlia Smith will share her experience living with the terrible disease. The luncheon commences at 10.30am on September 16 at Scone Sporties.

Music scholarship applications availableApplications open soon for scholarships to the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music.The Con offers a number of scholarships each year to music students undertaking tuition at the Conservatorium or Upper Hunter residents who wish to pursue music tuition with the Conservatorium. Scholarships are awarded based on merit demonstrated by the applicant in an audition. This year, auditions will take place on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 October, 2016. The closing date for applications for 2017 scholarships is Wednesday 12 October, 2016.

Father, husband and owner of Scone Spare Parts, Paul Smart shares his views on the marvels and wonders of being a father.How many children/grandchildren? I am a proud father of two sons, James 27 and Justin 25. One grandchild - a four-legged Border Collie called Watson.

What’s it mean to be a father? My idea of fatherhood is to pass on the values my parents taught me which is to be respectful and helping others when needed. Old-fashioned ideas are still a great way to build a community.

How has parenthood surprised me? Nothing has surprised me as a dad. My boys have been easy to parent, as they are very sport-orientated. Keeping them busy in sport has avoided alot of problems for us. We still play numerous rounds of golf together, and enjoy each other’s company. The apples haven’t fallen far from the tree. I would not change a thing, and am very proud of the way the boys have matured.

What advice for other fathers? What has worked for us is communication; being involved in the activities that they are passionate about and to give them space when they need it. And if you follow the same footy team, all the better!

How do you celebrate Father’s Day? We usually have lunch or dinner out, play a few holes of golf and enjoy a few laughs. Life’s good.

Happy Father’s DayAs the weather warms up thoughts turn to spring and one of the first celebrations of that season is Father’s Day.

What will you do to honour your dad or someone who is like a dad to you?

There’s still time to pick up a gift that will bring a smile to his face, a sweet treat or plan a fun, family outing to his fave restaurant for a relaxing catch-up.

Ancient ceremonyUpper Hunter residents are being urged to line the streets of Singleton when an ancient military ceremony takes place there soon. On September 9 the town will host a Freedom of Entry ceremony, for only the fourth time in the town’s history. The ceremony welcomes the armed services to Singleton and allows them to replenish food and arms, rest and relax in the town.

Some 300 soldiers will form up in Hunter Street on the day to step off at 11am, turning right into John Street. The soldiers will be led by The School of Infantry Commanding Officer Scott Morris who will be met by NSW Police Inspector Tim Seymour under the Hunter Crossing overpass.

With swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating and bands playing, Inspector Seymour and Lieutenant Colonel Morris will exchange words with Inspector Seymour then granting permission for the Army to enter the town. The ceremony begins at 11am.

Muswellbrook Relay for LifeMuswellbrook’s Relay for Life cancer fundraiser is celebrating ten years. To mark the occasion, organisers are hosting a huge party which will run from 2pm Saturday September 24 to 6.30am on Sunday September 25. Live music, food, Zumba, a jumping castle and much more will help keep the crowd entertained while they celebrate this important community achievement.

A scone in SconeTwo of Scone’s famous community cookbooks are getting a revamp. ‘A scone in Scone’ and ‘How About a Little Jam and Cream with Your Scone?’ were compiled years ago as community fundraisers and the team at the Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre is overseeing a revival. The collections include entrées, mains, pickles, relish, a selection of sweets and of course a few scone recipes. The first book is available to buy from the Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre now and the second one is to be released shortly. This book is a lovely keepsake of local recipes.
