Remembering Theresa: Tori Vines By Rebecca JenkinsThere are many ways to remember a loved one after they’ve passed on. But one of the most heartfelt ways is through one’s own creativity and talents. Such is the case for Tori Vines, after her cousin-in-law and good friend, Theresa Chapman, passed away from breast cancer not long ago. Theresa requested that Tori record one of Theresa’s songs with Theresa’s brother, Darren Johnson. This she has done and one can now hear the result on iTunes.Since the tender age of ten, Tori has known that she wanted a career in music. Supported by her wonderful and music-loving family she began with singing, and by age 15 she could not only belt out a tune, but she could play guitar and piano. It was quite obvious by this point that Tori was destined to grace the stage. It was through her music that she met Theresa. Theresa started as Tori’s very fi rst booking agent and despite selling her Armidale business (Axiom) after two years with Tori under her wing, the two remained friends and eventually became family.

Tori feels very privileged to have had the life she’s led, “It has been amazing having a life in music.” remarks Tori, “I have performed with some of the best musicians/singers in Australia, travelled overseas and Australia singing; performed/produced/directed musicals just to name a few things. Everything I’ve done since has lead me to my life as I know it now. I’m a music teacher, private vocal coach, performer and recording artist.” On top of this she is also a mother to two beautiful children (Ted and Pippa).

When it came to Theresa’s request for Tori to record her song, there was no refusing for Tori. Especially because her passing had made such a massive impact upon so many people. “Theresa wrote this piece many years ago along with a number of country gospel songs.” says Tori, “She has recorded a number of pieces of her own, however when she was very unwell a few months before she past away from breast cancer, she asked if I would record Any Clearer on her brother’s new album (Darren Johnson - Country Song). Theresa’s death was hard for the family, leaving behind her husband Michael and son Matthew. She was only 40.”

Remembering Theresa: Tori Vines Continued from page 2The album and the song both feature a number of Scone locals amidst its sounds including Tori and Darren. Tori’s father-in-law, Wayne Saunders also features on the album playing banjo and pedal steel. Tori and Wayne have a long history of performing together and so his appearance on the album comes as no surprise.

There are also a few other pieces in the works. Darren Coggan (Tori’s mentor during the Talent Development Project) is helping Tori to produce two more singles coming out next year. “I have chosen 2 pieces that Darren sent me ‘Candlelight’(Darren Coggan) and ‘Jerilderie Moon’(Ken McBeath). When I was talking to Darren about what I wanted, I said I would like a country Aussie story which had a ballad flavour. So when I heard ‘Jerilderie Moon’ I just feel in love with the song. It’s the love story of Ned Kelly and his rumoured girlfriend.” Tori tries not to give too much away, but says that the tunes and style of music ‘seem to suit her voice’.

Theresa’s memory will certainly live on through Tori and Darren’s efforts and talents. No doubt we will see more of both in the very near future.

Mike takes the stand for Virtual ShedAustralia’s favourite larrikin and fast bowler, Mike Whitney, has always been known for his bright personality and ‘whole-hearted approach’ to the sport he loves. But on Thursday 4th December, Mike will be representing more than Australian cricket. He will represent a strong side to men’s mental health and depression, as Scone Neighbourhood Centre has invited him to be their guest speaker at the upcoming and final Virtual Shed Evening for 2014.Those in rural areas can find it hard to cope with some of the many stresses and issues that can occur on the land and the lifestyle it presents. Men more-so, due to the misconception that surrounds what kind of persona a male should maintain. Virtual Shed is dedicated to changing this misconception by setting up and maintaining support networks for those affected. “The Neighbourhood Centre has organised activities and brought high-profile speakers to encourage rural men to engage due to pressures of rural isolation, drought and job conditions while providing a health message.” says manager Lee Watts.

This December, Mike Whitney will grace the stage and light up the Scone Golf Club with his humour and bright outlook. Whitney is most famous for his career as a fast bowler during the 1980s and 90s. This led into a career in television with shows like ‘Gladiator’, ‘Who Dares Wins’ and ‘The Sydney Weekender’. It was throughout this stage of his career that Australia really saw the extent of his humour and bubbly personality. Support guest is none other than well-known rural poet, Greg Scott. All proceeds from this wonderful evening will go to supporting future projects undertaken by the Neighbourhood Centres.

Tickets are $15 and are available from both the Scone and Aberdeen Neighbourhood Centres. Doors open at 6:30pm for a 7pm start on 4th December at the Scone Golf Club. Pages River causing wavesHaydon Hall is known for its beautiful surrounds and its constant flow of varying exhibitions by artists of all shapes and sizes. Coming up, Haydon Hall will be showing a stunning collection that is the result of two workshops organised by the Murrurundi Arts Council focusing on the impact civilisation has on the environment, as well as showing a relationship between the environment and art itself.A total of eighteen 60cm x 60cm canvas prints produced by 9 individual artists will be on display. Half in colour, half in black and white. The subject was the Pages River: when represented in colour, it depicts how pristine the natural feature remains despite occupation. In black and white, the artists showed what impact has been made by humans on the River.

The group were guided by international artist, Hanna Kay. The first of the workshops involved walking alongside the river and taking in the natural environment. The artists utilised cameras and sketching along with development ideas to help them with their works.

The second day involved translating the artists ideas onto canvas. The exhibition is muchly anticipated and backed by the Arts NSW Country Support Program.

The exhibition will be showing from 27th November to the 14th December 2014. Official opening is on the 29th November at 3pm by Hanna Kay herself. Please come along and support your local artists in their endeavours.


Hilarity: Cartoon Dave WorkshopCartoon Dave was born under the name Kevin Monkeypants and was born eleven years ago in an abandoned caravan a few kilometres left of Antarctica... or at least, that’s what Dave would have you believe. He also claims his sister’s name is Blister-face, that he owns fourteen dolphins and that he’s the ex-president of the ‘Justin Beiber for Miss America’ club.... Cartoon Dave is also a well known cartoonist and will be running workshops during the schools holidays in January 2015. Now, if his bio is anything to go by, any child attending one of Dave’s workshops will be in for A LOT of fun!

Dave has had his fingers in many pies and has been published many times. This ‘outrageously handsome author, cartoonist and regular visitor to kids tv’ (another bio excerpt) has taught cartooning to over 125,000 children Australia-wide and has a relaxed and fully interactive approach to his workshops. His ‘NO-RULES approach to cartooning’ policy has made sure that every child he’s taught has walked away with a sense of achievement through using their own natural talents.

Free children’s activities in SconeScone Library offers a number of free children’s activities each week.

Toddler Time Tuesdays is a session full of short stories, rhymes and songs followed by colouring in. This program is directed toward toddlers 15 months to three years and is held at 10.30am.

Baby Talk Wednesdays is aimed at infants from newborn to 14 months and is a great way for you to meet other parents/carers and begin building the foundations of your child’s communication skills. The session includes short stories, rhymes, songs and flash cards. It runs for approximately 20 minutes and commences at 10.30am.

Storytime Fridays is a session full of stories, rhymes, songs and craft suitable for three to five year old children and their parents/carers. Storytime commences at 10.30am and runs for approximately an hour.

Each of these programs help develop a love for books, pre-reading skills, a desire to learn to read, listening and language skills, and cooperative behaviour as part of a group, while encouraging imagination and creativity.

‘Get Involved’ for people with disabilityThe Upper Hunter will be celebrating the International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) again this year with festivities including markets and stalls, live entertainment, and a free sausage sizzle.IDPwD is a United Nations-sanctioned day and has been running for twenty one years with the aim to ‘promote an understanding of people with disability and encourage support for their dignity’. On Wednesday 3 December events in countries all around the world will be held in honour and support of those in the world who live day-by-day with a disability.

Locals this year can attend the ‘Get Involved’ celebrations at the Muswellbrook Indoor Sports Centre on Rutherford Road next month on 3 December. 2NM will be broadcasting live with many other attractions throughout the day. Good for your heart! By Dr Peta Gay Railton, Pet Medical (pictured)Pets are good for both your physical and emotional health. International studies, including one sponsored by the Australian government, have shown that pet owners go to the doctor less often, have lower cholesterol and diglycerides, lower incidence of heart attacks, take less blood pressure medications and feel less lonely.Pets can significantly reduce stress-related increases in blood pressure. One study tracked the blood pressure of a group of stockbrokers. Those who had pets went from 120 to 126 for systolic blood pressure. Those who had no pets went from 120 to about 148.

The researchers said the benefits were equally good for men and women stockbrokers, regardless of whether they have a dog or a cat. Lower blood pressure means a lower risk of heart attack.

One scientist has now taken this research to a new and exciting level. Dr. Johannes Odendaal, Research Professor of the Life Sciences Research Institute, and author of Pets and Our Mental Health, along with his colleagues conducted experiments taking blood from humans and dogs, both while the person petted the dog and before. They measured the change in several neurochemcials found in the brain including; Dopamine, Oxytocin, Prolactin, Betaendorphin, and Norepinehrine all of which directly influence such feelings and emotions of exhilaration, positive excitement, pleasurable experiences, social bonding, sense of well-being and contentment, and feelings of comfort and security. In

addition, they measured another chemical, Cortisol, which increases during stress and can have a negative effect upon the immune system, leaving the body open the illnesses.

Their results were amazing. They found statistically significant increases in all the positive brain chemicals, in both the human and the dog, while the person petted the dog, as well as a decrease in the chemical Cortisol. Would petting a cat reveal the same results? “The answer is yes. In the context of petting a cat where blood pressure decreases, it is expected that the same neurochemical changes in the brain would have taken place - not because of the decreased blood pressure, but as part of the complex physiological processes taking place during positive interaction,” said Dr. Odendaal. Real Estate GuidePositive audit of Council’s fi nancesUpper Hunter Shire Council is in a positive fi nancial position as shown in the external Audit Report presented to a Council meeting on 21 November 2014.In 2013/14 Council had Cash Infl ows of $46.6m and Cash outfl ows of $42.6m, which is an increase in cash of $4.2m. This is mainly attributable to loans being drawn down that have not been fully expended, so there was no negative impact on Council’s cash position.

With Council’s Special Rate Variation granted progressively for the period 2013/14 to 2015/16, which has made available low cost funding under the Local Infrastructure Renewal Scheme, Council is seeing the benefi ts of improved infrastructure.

This is refl ected in Council’s Building and Infrastructure Renewal Ratio which has increased from 80% to 121% during the last 12 months. This compares very favorably to a state average of 81% for 2013. It means that Council is spending more on renewing its infrastructure at a rate greater than the rate of depreciation.

This increased level of work will continue in 2014/15 and 2015/16 with three bridges being replaced and various rural and urban road upgrades.

Further Council’s unrestricted current ratio of 4.02:1 or $4.02 of assets for every $1 of liabilities indicates that Council’s fi nancial position is strong and comparable to the State average of 4.0 for 2013 or the State Treasury Corp benchmark of greater than 1.5.

Council’s principal external auditor Mr. Paul Cornall from Forysths Chartered Accountants presented the audit report on the 2013/14 Financial Statements in front of councilors, staff and members of the public.

Mr Cornall said UHSC was in a good position based on the report. He also thanked Council’s Director Corporate and Community Services Steve Pryor and Finance Manager for getting the accounts done on time and effi ciently.


Allison to swoon the Willow Tree

Music fans are in for a real treat next month when Scone’s Willow Tree Hotel presents Allison Forbes on Tuesday 2nd December. Described as having expressively warm, but edgy vocals thrown into a classic country pillow with a dash of bluegrass on the side, Allison Forbes has been predicted to change the face of country music.

Growing up outside of Tamworth with the Tamworth Country Music Festival always signifi cant in her life, she watched each year the stars gather in her home town, and she yearned to be a part of it. In 2011, she was accepted into the CMAA Academy of Country Music where she learned how to refi ne herself as an artist and a songwriter embracing what has made her different from everybody else.

Since the beginning of Allison’s song writing career, she has been invited to perform at the Tamworth Chamber of Business Awards and the esteemed Roll of Renown Concert where she represented John Williamson at the Tamworth Country Music Festival. Having fi nished recording her debut album (featuring Fire and Guns, Lie Lie Butterfl y and What’ll Happen to me Now) which has recently been released, she has also been nominated as one of the top 20 fi nalists in the running to receive a $50,000 scholarship to the Australian International Conservatorium of Music.
