Problem Statement

Almost all home security systems available to consumers require monitoring by an outside party such as ADT and ESCO; these outside parties usually charge an installation fee and a recurring monthly fee.

Our design called The Smart Security System (SSS) will allow home and business owners to monitor their homes and businesses via their smart phones.

Activating and deactivating the sensors will be done via their smart phone wirelessly using Wi-Fi technology. This allows them to have control of the system regardless of where they are.

Our system will include a motion sensor, gas/smoke detector, temperature sensor, and a built in camera.

Marketing requirements

Must be available for purchase for less than $400. Battery powered. Must not be greater than 6 x 7 inch. User should have full control of the system. User must be able to receive visual and audible alerts via a smart phone

or computer. Wall/ceiling mounting capability. Detect common gasses such as LPG (propane or butane), methane,

smoke (CO) and alcohol. Detect motion.

Engineering requirements

Low power consumption, maximum voltage 5 VDC at 300mA. Dimensions of system: 6’’H * 7’’W * 2’’D. Device has to be controlled wirelessly via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. Visual images will be in Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format. At

least 2 Mega pixels. Device must detect common gasses (LPG (Propane/Butane), methane,

hydrogen, smoke and alcohol) at concentrations of 300ppm to 5000ppm. Detect levels of infrared radiation at a range of 110 degrees (front view),

70 degrees (side view) for up to 15ft. +/- 1ft. Temperature sensor must have an operating range of 35 to 120 degrees

Fahrenheit with accuracy of +/- 2 degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity range of 25 to 90% with accuracy of +/- 5% RH for the humidity.

Results

Working devicesAll sensors are built and working. They also meet all their individual engineering requirements.

Motion sensor: working at a range of up to 15ft and 110 degrees front view and 70 degrees side view.

Temperature and Humidity sensor: working at a range of 35 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit and 25 to 90% humidity. ±5 % RH, ±2°F

Smoke/ gas sensor: detects common gasses at concentrations of 300ppm to 5000ppm.

What is Spark Core• Spark Core is a complete Wi-Fi enabled

development platform for creating connected devices with ease.

• Easy to program.

• Built in microcontroller.

• Application is available for smart devices.

What is SmartThings? SmartThings is the platform that is open to

developers to create their own system.

Open physical graph.

SmartThings also sells monitor equipment for user to go buy and use with there app.
