Are you protected from DDoS?Don’t be a victim of cyber-crimeDistributed Denial of Serviceattacks are increasingly used bycyber criminals to take vulnerableweb sites off line. DDoS has beencompared to having 1,000’s ofrandom people calling a companyswitchboard all at the same time -the real customers can't getthrough and eventually the systemcollapses under the strain.

It is estimated that between 2% and 5%of all internet traffic is part of a DDoSattack which originate from networks ofhijacked PCs known as “Botnets”.These are controlled by hackers tosimultaneously send huge volumes ofweb page requests to a target URL,flooding the server resources andrendering it inoperable. Aimed at causing maximumcommercial damage and blackmailingbusinesses in return for stopping theattacks, online, ecommerce basedbusinesses are a favourite target.Sectors at risk include onlinebookmakers, major retailers andticketing companies.

The UK has the fastest growing onlinesales in Europe, reaching £12.8 billionin 2007 and is forecast to rocket to £44billion by 2012, making it imperativethat web sites are protected from DDoS.

DDoS – the facts• Approximately 3% of all internettraffic is DDoS

• DDoS attacks reached 5000 a day in 2007

• Firewalls have only limited ability tocombat an attack

• Many web sites simply never recoverfrom DDoS

•Attacks can be prolonged, often formonths

• Many ISPs have no protection fromDDoS attacks

Philippines based Bayview Technologies, the IT services division of South East Asia’sfastest growing gambling company,AsianLogic have installed WS seriesappliances to protect their online casinoand poker web sites from DDoS attacks.

This technology is widely deployed by some ofthe world’s largest online gaming and bettingcompanies to stop their web sites from beingtaken off line by targeted attacks that aretypically timed to coincide with major sportingevents or other heavy betting periods.

The AsianLogic Group operates a number ofonline casinos offering over 100 interactivegames via the Bayview servers located in thePhilippines. Andy Perkins Firewall Specialist

AASSKK TTHHEE EEXXPPEERRTT

What does a firewall do?

Over the last few years, security threats tocompanies and their defenses have grownand changed dramatically. If your firewallwas installed before 2005 then your networksecurity is probably not up to date.

What firewalls do

Firewalls prevent unauthorised access to orfrom a private computer network and protectan organisation’s confidential information tostop malicious users from entering thenetwork by distinguishing between good andbad traffic. In recent years firewalls have evolved to dealwith the new breed of security threats so itis important to ensure that the right productis specified to protect the business and thenetwork architecture. In the current securityand business compliance climate the bestfirewalls are those that can offer protectionfrom a range of blended threats and coverdifferent functions; gateway defense;carrying out defined security policies; hidingand protecting internal network addresses;reporting on threats and activity; andsegregating activity between a trustednetwork, the internet, and a DMZ.

What can’t firewalls do?

Even with a firewall, there are still manyareas of network risk, most obviouslymalware or malicious software whichincludes Trojan horses, viruses, worms,spyware/adware, and phishing- andpharming-infected emails and web pages.Malware is usually acquired by clicking onemail attachments or email links.

Another well-known threat, not covered bytraditional firewalls, is unsolicitedcommercial email or spam. It can seriouslyaffect productivity, and because spam oftencontains viruses and phishing attempts, it is a direct security threat.

Protect against main threats with UTM

One of the best ways to protect against themain threats not covered by traditionalfirewalls is to use Unified Threat Management(UTM). These are multipurpose securitysolutions/devices that at a minimum have a firewall, VPN, antivirus, and intrusiondetection/prevention system (IDS/IPS).UTMs are usually lower cost than buyingand installing several security componentsseparately. They are also typically greener,as one solution uses much less power thanmultiple solutions. 90% of all firewalls couldbe optimised for greater performance andthis is something Boxing Orange can helpyou achieve.

If you would like to know more aboutfirewalls and which is the best option foryour network, please get in touch withBoxing Orange by phone on 0113 232 2330or email [email protected]

Network SecurityBoxing Orange has established a numberof exciting new partnerships withNetwork Security vendors. The newpartnerships will allow Boxing Orange toexpand the products and managedservices that they offer.

SIEM ServicesBoxing Orange is to offer a SecurityInformation and Event Managementservice. The service will offer;•24/7/365 alert and log monitoring •Advanced correlation •Immediate incident response •On-demand reporting

Security AdvisoryServices (SAS)A new security advisory service (SAS) isbeing introduced by Boxing Orange. Thefocus of the SAS team will be oncompliance and regulatory solutions.

Secure HostedServicesBoxing Orange is to introduce a securehosted service facility in early 2009. Thefacility is in response to increasedcustomer requests and a broadening ofthe services offered by Boxing Orange totheir clients.

Securing VirtualEnvironmentsThe use of virtual environments withinbusinesses has presented significantsecurity challenges. Do you know:•who is viewing what sites on your time? •if anyone is stealing your data?•of employee’s illegal online activities?•the sites your employees are visiting?•how long they spend on these sites?

If any of your personnel are caught doinganything illegal on the internet, do you alsoknow that you may be legally responsible? You can avoid all of these problems bytalking to Boxing Orange about forensicsand implementing an internet viewingpolicy for your organisation.

Proposed new changes to theGovernment’s Data Protection Actlegislation and the announcement ofthe latest version of the PCI DSS(v1.2) standard has added even morepressure on businesses to ensure that their IT security systems are fully compliant.

Today virtually any business couldinadvertently find itself in difficulty, including imprisonment if the new law is passed, if it does not take its securityseriously. This means not just ensuringthat the latest security technology isdeployed to protect the network but also that rigorous security policies andprocedures are in place to help maintainyear round regulatory compliance. If your organisation stores, processes or transmits card payment informationyou are required to have your network

independently audited for vulnerabilities at least twice per year in order to stay PCI accredited. With non-compliancepotentially resulting in withdrawal of payment facilities or significant fines for a serious data breach, businessescannot afford to ignore this particularrequirement.Internal security is equally important as is controlling what employees are usingthe network for, particularly in terms oftheir internet access. Company directorscan find themselves liable for any illegalactivity that their employees are engagedin whether that involves stealing data orusing the company’s internet access forcriminal or immoral purposes.

Boxing Orange offers organisations arange of business compliance servicesfrom PCI accreditation and full penetration testing through to a detailedforensic audit of the entire network.

Boxing Orange is delighted to announceits successful re-accreditation as a PCIDSS approved scanning vendor. One of the first UK network securityspecialists to be awarded ASV status in2006, Boxing Orange is also now one of the first to be re-accredited under themore rigorous testing procedures linkedto the updated PCI v1.2 that came intoforce on October 1st.

The PCI Data Security Standard becamemandated for any company that stores or transmits card payment data in Junethis year. PCI v1.2 is the first plannedrevision of the standard for two years and is part of the move to ensure greatercompliance across the whole of theecommerce sector.
