METAL-SEATED BALL VALVESCombining almost 50 years of experience in critical applications in the nuclear, chemicals, oil and gas, coker, and mining industries, Velan has brought together a team of over 60 professional engineers who form the core of the Engineering Design Group. Advanced software applications, including finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics and 3D solid modeling, help Velan design superior quality valves that meet the most demanding performance requirements. We have two R&D facilities, with steam boilers and superheaters, flow loops and cryogenic test stands. In addition, we are engaged in advanced research in metal spray technology, using the services of independent laboratories for

abrasion, sliding wear, bond strength testing, scanning electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction. Velan’s QA system is geared towards continuous improvement, process quality and stringent compliance to worldwide quality standards (e.g. ASME Section III, PED, TUV, ISO 9001:2000). Automated honing, mate-lapping, and vacuum

The above valves are installed in a Lo-Cat system, a liquid-oxygen catalyst that removes H2S from the plant’s inlet gas stream. This highly erosive and corrosive environment requires zero atmospheric leakage and absolute bubble-tight shutoff capability. Velan supplied 23 valves in sizes 8-16” (200-400 mm) to this Texas refinery, all of which have delivered an excellent performance record.

The 30” (750 mm) valves shown on the photo are installed in Hydrocarbon mixed phase service 840ºF / 110 psi (450ºC / 7.6 bar) in severe cyclical application where the valve is cooled (steam/water quench) from 840ºF (450ºC) to ambient within two hours. The quenching occurs every 18 hours. Twenty-two or more of these 30” (900 mm) valves are installed in dead end service where a positive seal is critical.

The service also involves Coke fines and partially polymerized hydrocarbons which harden in the valve cavities.

Over 1500 similar large ball valves up to 36” (900 mm) have been installed in Coker and other Petroleum processes in 138 countries around the world.

Pulp mill digester blow valves are subject to large thermal shocks and high cycle rates. This pulp mill in Minnesota switched all 10 digester blow valves to Velan metal-seated split-body valves, and immediately experienced a great reduction in maintenance down-time.

APPLICATIONS:The Velan Top-Entry Metal-Seated Ball Valve is one of the most universally used valves on the market today. STEM PACKING DESIGN - STANDARD SB 150–600

l Fully-guided stem. The stem is guided by a RPTFE or graphite bearing, preventing wobbling and radial stem thrust on packing rings.

l Two-piece flanged gland.

l Stem thrust washer prevents galling, reduces torque and provides a secondary stem seal.

l Two-piece ball and stem allows for easier maintenance, stems can be made from higher strength material, and the ball and stem can be replaced separately. Also high quality circular spiral-wound gaskets are used, which is not possible in one-piece ball and stem center split valves.

l Live-loaded packing. Two sets of Belleville washers, which, together with the leaf spring action of the gland flange, provide live-loading on packing rings.

The Velan Type L High-Temperature Metal-Seated Ball Valve is well suited for a variety of demanding services where high-temperature and abrasive solids are present.

DESIGN FEATURES:l Unique, single-seat ball valve design. The Velan

single-seat ball valve has a flat spring set acting through a hardfaced bearing against the bottom ball shaft which provides sufficient initial ball-seat load for valve tightness, even at low ∆P.

l The design provides freedom for thermal expansion of the ball without jamming, even at extreme temperatures.

l Proven in qualification tests and field operation to be solids–proof, even for the toughest applications on slurry service with solids.

l Tightness rates: Allowable leakage rate at full ∆P: ASME/ FCI 70-2 Class V. Tighter shutoff available upon request.

l Max. operating temperature: CF8M valves: 1,450°F (788°C). WCB valves: 800°F (426°C). Chrome Moly C5 or C12: 1,000°F (538°C).

l Wall thickness complies with ASME B16.34.

FOR CAST SB SPLIT-BODY VALVES

The above illustration shows the optional ball construction that incorporates the use of a reduced diameter ball where only the seating surfaces in both the closed and open position contact the seat. The balance of the ball surface is below the seating surface allowing unobstructed ball travel when used in scaling, coking, polymerizing or other similar processes that will interfere with the smooth operation of a standard ball.
