LOS ANGELES The magic word atTuesday’s Dancing With the Starsfinale? Shocked.
In the moments after Season24 of the ABC dance competitionended, NFL running back RashadJennings said he was shocked towin; retired World Series champDavid Ross said he was shockedto make the finals, let alone finishas runner-up; and the studio au-dience was shocked — and quiteupset, as evident from some hoot-
ing — that Fifth Harmony’s Nor-mani Kordei didn’t finish higherthan third.
“I don’t know if you caught myface or not, but I literally couldnot believe it at all,” Jennings saidof the moment he and pro part-ner Emma Slater heard host TomBergeron announce them as win-ners. “It solidified all the hardwork we put in. It was well worthit.”
For a guy who was so surprisedto win, Jennings has some prettyimpressive plans for his mirrorball trophy.
“I’ve already figured this out.Over the fireplace. There’s goingto be some light shining on it. It’sgoing to rotate and it’s going toplay every single song, in thebackground, that we danced to,”he told reporters on the dancefloor just moments after he andSlater triumphed.
Ross, who partnered withLindsay Arnold, said he never ex-pected to get this far in the dancecompetition.
“I’ve said this a billion times, but I didn’t plan on being herepast Week 3. (Lindsay) hasbrought me to this level and I’veenjoyed it so much and grown asa person,” he said. “She’s pushedme to the limit. … We got to the fi-nals and we got to second place. Icould not be prouder.”
Ross said it was “almost un-comfortable” watching gooddancers get eliminated, includingthird-place finishers Kordei andValentin Chmerkovskiy. “You’relike, ‘What the heck’s going on?’But I appreciate the fact peopleare voting for me and (Lindsay). It makes me so thankful that peo-ple enjoyed watching us. It’sprobably the biggest complimentyou can get.”
Kordei, who handled her third-place finish with grace during andafter the show, was asked aboutthe studio audience’s displeasurewith her elimination. “It’s reallynice that they cared. It’s great tosee the support I’ve gained.”
As for post-Dancing plans, Ross— who retired as the ChicagoCubs’ catcher following the team’schampionship 2016 season — sayshis dancing performance days areover. “Now, it’s going to be in pri-vate with my wife,” he said. Jen-nings, a football free agent wholast played for the New York Gi-ants, will join the Dancing Withthe Stars summer tour while pre-paring to go back to the gridiron.
“I get to continue to dance, I getto continue to train for football,”he says. “When a team calls, I’mready. Until then, I’m training anddancing. They know I’m going tobe in shape.”
