n It’s amazing how many ‘Jetson’ devices became a realityBy Vera [email protected]; 810-433-6823 It was only on for one 24-epi-sode season, from Sept. 23, 1962 to March 17, 1963, but the impact made by “The Jetsons,” a story about a futuristic family set in 2062, was amazing and helped define the future for so many Americans today.
Some of the ideas, products and technology that we enjoy today were featured in some way on The Jetsons. It didn’t even take 100 years to actually acquire some of the futuristic ideas posed to us when “The Jetsons” first appeared on our TV screens in September of 1962 (see sidebar). This family makeup includes George Jetson, the 40-year-old husband of Jane Jetson, and father of teenage daughter, Judy, and elementary-school age son, Elroy.

JETSONSContinued from Page 1B The family lives in Skypad Apart-ments in Orbit City, in a future with the trappings of science fantasy depictions of American life in the future. They have robot servants, flying saucer-like cars and moving sidewalks. All of the apart-ment buildings are set on giant poles (like the Seattle Space Needle). The ground is almost never seen, however, in “Jetsons: The Movie,” it is suggested that the earth is so polluted that everyone lives in the sky. George works as a digital index op-erator at Spacely’s Space Sprockets, a manufacturer of sprockets and other high-tech equipment. His primary job requires him to repeatedly push a single button on a computer. Once, George complained of his heavy workload, having to push a button for one hour, one day of the week. Jane is 33 years old and the head of Skypad Apartments’ recycling com-pany. She is obsessed with fashion and new gadgetry, and is an expert shopper. She is said to make a mean meatloaf in her Food-a-Rac-a-Cycle. Outside of the home, she is a member of the Galaxy Women Historical Society. Judy is the typical teenage girl. She is obsessed with boys, rock stars (espe-cially Jet Screamer), clothes and loves to hang out with her friends from Orbit High School. Elroy is almost 7 years old. He is highly intelligent and an expert in all space sciences. He attends the Little Dipper School and is an active member in his Space Cub Troop. His favorite food is noodles with butter in it. He is a mild-mannered and good child. He is fond of anything that involves gadgets and robotics. He also lives his dog, Astro. Astro has a flair for dramatics and is not ashamed to beg for attention. His main form of exercise comes from walk-ing on the floating treadmill outside of the Jetson’s house, and attacking George whenever he can. Astro is almost 4 months old and his favorite food is steak. Last but not least is Rosie. She is a robot and the maid and housekeeper for the Jetson family. Her model number is XB-500. The Jetsons was eventually syndicated, with new episodes airing from 1985 to 1987.

Peter Ostrum
Peter Gardner Ostrum is an American veterinarian and former child actor whose only film role was as Charlie Bucket in the 1971 motion picture Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. A native of Cleveland, Ostrum was 12 years old when selected by talent agents for Willy Wonka. Though he enjoyed the experience of shooting the film, he opted not to sign a three-film contract when it was over. Soon after Ostrum returned home from filming Willy Wonka, his family acquired a horse. While the teenaged Ostrum was interested in the horse, it was the animal’s veterinarian that left a lasting impression on him. In 1984, Peter Ostrum received his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. As of November 2015, Dr. Ostrum worked out of the Countryside Veterinary Clinic in Lowville, New York, where he works mainly with horses and cows.
Mara WilsonMara Wilson is an American writer and former child actress. She is known for playing Natalie Hillard in “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), Susan Walker in “Miracle on 34th Street” (1994), and Matilda Wormwood in “Matilda” (1996). Since retiring from film acting, Wilson has focused on writing. As of 2013, she lives in Queens, New York, and is involved with New York storytelling and comedy.
Kami CotlerKami Cotler is an American actress and educator. She is best known for her role as young Elizabeth Walton, which she played in both the 1971 movie “The Homecoming: A Christmas Story,” and the series “The Waltons.” Cotler attended University of California, Berkeley, earning a degree in Social Sciences. Her first teaching job took her to a small rural Virginia school in the Blue Ridge Mountains, much like the fictional one she attended on The Waltons. Cotler returned to California in 2001 and took a position teaching at a charter high school. Cotler is a past board member of the American Montessori Society. In addition to working as an educator, Cotler ran her own boutique travel company and managed a San Francisco cafe.
Danny Lloyd Danny Lloyd is an American teacher and former child actor most known for his role as Danny Torrance in the 1980 film “The Shining,” an adaptation of Stephen King’s 1977 novel of the same name. In 2007, Lloyd became a biology professor at a community college in Elizabethtown, Kentucky, and is reported to also be a pig farmer.

Say no to slobber! Our dog Diesel, a 7-year-old beagle and rat terrier mix, is a very much loved member of our family. There is one thing Diesel will never do, however, and that is accompany us to a restaurant. Simply put, he is a beggar and a thief. He would not sit quietly under our table. If he couldn’t walk around and beg from other diners, he would be hanging on our legs and whining the entire time. Plus, he has short white hair and he sheds, a lot. The Michigan Senate has passed a bill (122) that would allow people to bring their dogs to outdoor seating areas of restaurants. Currently, only Leader dogs and other helper/therapy dogs are permitted. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives.
There are countless reasons for not allowing family dogs on restaurant patios. Most local outdoor patios are very tight, for one, and there are several potential problems. What if they get into fights with other dogs, or bite people? Dogs can grab stuff from tables. Little kids can sneak them food or bones they shouldn’t have. When dogs get nervous they sometimes pee a little. What happens if the dog has to poo? Who’s gonna clean that up? And some people, especially children, are terrified of dogs. Others are allergic to them. And some dogs slobber and shake their heads to share the wealth. Gross! Arguments in favor of the bill
Just sayin’...

include that allowing dogs on restaurant outdoor patios could encourage tourists to come to Michigan. When a person or family is traveling with a dog, he or she may find it very difficult to find a place to
eat and would welcome the chance to bring the dog to a restaurant’s patio. Among the rules, if this were allowed, are that the dining area would have to be maintained free of visible dog hair, dander, and other related waste and debris, and would have to be cleaned and disinfected appropriately as needed. Surfaces contaminated
by dog waste would have to be cleaned and disinfected immediately, and equipment used to clean dog

NATIONAL HISTORY
JUNE 111943: Mobster-turned-FBI-informant Henry Hill, whose life of crime was chronicled in the 1986 book “Wiseguy: Life in a Mafia Family” and the 1990 film “Goodfellas,” is born in New York City. Hill’s underworld exploits included participating in the headline-making $5.8-million heist at the Lufthansa cargo terminal at New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport in 1978. It was the largest recorded cash robbery in American history at the time.
JUNE 121975: Indira Gandhi, the prime minister of India, is found guilty of electoral corruption in her successful 1971 campaign. Despite calls for her resignation, Gandhi refused to give up India’s top office and later declared martial law in the country when public demonstrations threatened to topple her administration. Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of the independent Republic of India.
JUNE 131966: The Supreme Court hands down its decision in “Miranda v. Arizona,” establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation. Now considered standard police procedure, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you,” has been heard so many times in television and film dramas that it has become almost cliché.
JUNE 141777: During the American Revolution, the Continental Congress adopts a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 alternate stripes red and white” and that “the Union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new Constellation.” The national flag,
which became known as the “Stars and Stripes,” was based on the “Grand Union” flag, a banner carried by the Continental Army in 1776 that also consisted of 13 red and white stripes.
JUNE 151863: President Abraham Lincoln calls for help in protecting Washington, D.C., America’s capital city. Throughout June, Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia was on the move. He had pulled his army from its position along the Rappahannock River around Fredericksburg, Virginia, and set it on the road to Pennsylvania. Lee and the Confederate leadership decided to try a second invasion of the North to take pressure off Virginia and to seize the initiative against the Army of the Potomac. After the Confederates took Winchester, Virginia, on June 14, they were situated on the Potomac River, seemingly in a position to move on Washington, D.C. Lincoln did not know it, but Lee had no intention of attacking Washington.
JUNE 161738: Mary Katharine Goddard is born in New London, Connecticut. She went on to publish the first version of the Declaration of Independence to include all of the Congressional signatures. Goddard’s professional life was inextricably bound with that of her brother, William. While William traveled extensively in his efforts to build their business, Mary maintained the day-to- day operations in Baltimore. In 1775, William and his network named her Baltimore’s postmaster. In 1777, when Congress decided to print the Declaration of Independence including a complete list of signatures, they chose the Goddards as printers. Mary was running operations, and thus the document appeared “printed by Mary Katherine Goddard.”
JUNE 171865: The dismantled Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrives in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue, which was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, became known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.
waste would have to be stored separately from all other cleaning equipment and could not be used for other cleaning purposes. All dog waste would have to be disposed of at least daily outside of the food service establishment in a covered waste receptacle. An employee who touched the dog or cleaned dog waste could not serve food or beverages or handle tableware until he or she had washed his or her hands. The diners aren’t going to do all of this, the restaurant staff would have to. You would have to be a real dog lover to do that kind of job. If you’re a traveler, welcome to Michigan. But, if you have a dog, please feel free to patronize one of our many fabulous restaurants — by ordering a carryout meal — please.

skilled or as enthusiastic about swimming as Labradors. If your dog gives you a hard time about swimming or struggles to stay afloat, you may not be able to share laps together. Instead, watch him or her carefully around the water to prevent ac-cidents should your pet wander in.Watching for currents At the beach, the same currents and rip tides that can pose a threat to humans can threaten dogs. Even strong swimmers can be affected in rough surf, and dogs may not have the intellect to escape currents, so it’s best to avoid the situation. Washed-up fish and seawater also can be threaten-ing to dogs. Dogs may be enticed by the smell of dead fish, but become ill if they consume decomposing marine life. The same is said for drinking seawater. Bring fresh water along to quench the dog’s thirst so he or she will not be tempted to lap up the saltwater.Life preservers Dogs riding in boats should be fitted with canine life preservers. These will help dogs stay afloat should they fall in the water, while also making dogs more visible in the water. Water and dogs may seem like a natural fit, but individuals should test their dogs’ swimming abilities and exercise precaution whenever their pets are around water.
