Successfully Selling Homes and Land on the Monterey Peninsula

Columbus Day, crayons, correctness, Seattle and silly puttyBINNEY & SMITH are my heroes.

They make those wonderful Crayolas thatkept my hands busy for hours when I was akid.

I had the basic set: eight colored sticks —red, blue, green, yellow, brown, black, orange and violet. I learned discipline fromcoloring. Staying within the lines was play-time’s version of military close-order drill.

Coloring pictures on paper so grainy itstill had tree bark in it jump-started myimagination. Even now I can look at a kid’spicture in a school room and smell the waxypleasure that seeped through the cut-out win-dow on the yellow and green box where youcould see the paper labels on the crayons.

Binney & Smith. Has any product

brought more simple pleasures to more kidsthan theirs? Political correctness caught upwith B&S in 1999. The color, Indian red, wasthought to be offensive to Native Americans, when actually it referred to a red pigmentfrom India. To avoid controversy, B&Schanged the name to Chestnut. Maybe that iswhy the company bought the rights to SillyPutty, in my opinion the perfect name todescribe what political correctness is allabout.

We have seen our share of political cor-rectness on the Monterey Peninsula. Back in2009, we had a cross that was a historicalmarker as well as a religious symbol. But itoffended a precious few and the cross had tobe removed. Silly Putty.

to the Coast Guard.Restrictions were forced upon thousands

of Italians preventing them from travelingmore than five miles from their homes — a

policy that kept a San Francisco man,Giuseppe DiMaggio, from visiting the wharfrestaurant owned by his son, Joe, the base-ball legend.

On a more personal note, here inMonterey, the mother of my friend, MikeTravato, was classified as an enemy alienand received a notice to evacuate her homeon the same day she learned that another sonand a nephew had gone down with the U.S.S.Arizona at Pearl Harbor.

According to Peter L. Belmonte, authorof “Italian-Americans in WW II,” more than500,000 Italian-Americans served in the mil-itary during the war. Fourteen of themreceived the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Earlier this year, Minneapolis also decid-ed to change Columbus Day to IndigenousPeoples’ Day. So where does the Silly Puttystop? Will the capital of Ohio becomeIndigenous City, OH? And if we’re going tochange the name of the Washington,Redskins, why stop there? Change ournation’s capital to Washington, District ofIndigiana.

Hey Seattle, you didn’t need to give usanother reason to dislike you. The Seahawkswith their insufferable coach are reasonenough.

I think about these things while Octoberwinds down to November as I enjoy the lastvestiges of our Chestnut summer. Somethings just don’t make sense to me. Maybe Ishould just stop thinking about them and goshopping at Macy’s annual IndigenousPeople’s Day sale.

Silly Putty.Jerry Gervase can be contacted at

[email protected].

Now the city of Seattle has passed a reso-lution changing Columbus Day toIndigenous People’s Day.

“This action will allow us to bring intothe present day our valuableand rich history, so it’s therefor future generations tolearn,” said Fawn Sharp, pres-ident of the Quinault Nation, atribe on the OlympicPeninsula, who is also presi-dent of the Affiliated Tribes ofNorthwest Indians.

“Nobody discovered Seattle,” she said toa round of applause. Silly Putty.

Ms. Sharp has shot an arrow into themarinara-pumping hearts of Italian-Americans. The Quinault Nation had 364more choices to pick a day to “bring into cur-rent present day our valuable and rich histo-ry.” Why choose Columbus Day if not to cel-ebrate the valuable history of one ethnicgroup at the expense of another?

No one denies the harsh treatment NativeAmericans received from the U.S. govern-ment. But they are not the only ones to sufferunjust, xenophobic treatment from the gov-ernment. More than 600,000 Italian-Americans were declared enemy aliens afterthe start of World War II.

“According to the latest research, dozensof Italians lost their fishing boats and hun-dreds more — largely bakers, restaurantworkers and garbage men — had to give upjobs because of curfews. About 1,600Italian-American citizens were interned andabout 10,000 Italian-Americans were forcedto move from their houses in Californiacoastal communities to inland homes,”writes James Brooke, in “After Silence,Italians Recall the Internment”

At the start of the war, Italian-Americansrepresented this nation’s largest group of for-eign-born residents. There were more thanfive million of them. Curfews and confisca-tions were imposed on Italian-Americanswithin hours after Pearl Harbor, even beforewar was declared on Italy. Businesses andhomes were seized. Ninety-percent of theowners of San Francisco’s large and impor-tant fishing fleet had to surrender their boats
