JESSICA CANNINGPutting the Science of Real Estate to Work for Buyers & Sellers.

October sales slipped a bit with 16

closed sales across Pebble Beach(10) and

Carmel(6), down from 21 in October

last year. Pebble Beach also saw 5 new

sales set to close by year-end. The low-

water mark continues to rise in Pebble

with the lowest price paid in all of 2013

being $550K, almost double the $399.5K

in 2012. The prime parts of Carmel had 8

new sales in October; of particular note

in Carmel has been the surge in Scenic Rd

sales this year, with 8 closed sales and 1

more in escrow - the highest annual sales

on Scenic on record.

Page 6: SECTION RE November 1 - The Carmel Pine Conepineconearchive.fileburstcdn.com/131101PCRE.pdf · Millay and Ogden Nash are among his favorites. Performing poetry is what got him started.

“Somebody timed me once. It went on fortwo minutes and thirty-eight seconds with-out a break,” Taelen says.

Another reason I’d like my column tohave sound is simply so you could hearTaelen’s voice. It is the voice I wish came outof my mouth when I speak. It is the kind ofvoice that had Taelen auditioned for “StarWars,” he would have would have beat outJames Earl Jones to play Darth Vadar.

Thomas is well known in this area forportraying a variety of literary personalities. He was Ogden Nash at the recent Authorsand Ideas Festival in Pebble Beach. He hasbeen Mark Twain, John Steinbeck, JackLondon, Teddy Roosevelt, and DanielBoone. Though he may appear in outfits thatare apropos to the charactershe portrays, he doesn’t try tolook like them. Perhaps thestrength and success of hisportrayals is in not imitatingthem.

A straight imitation of thecharacters would be doing adisservice to his audience. Rather he inhab-its their spirit through the recitation of theirwords, becoming them while not losing sightof who he is in the performance. He is ableto share the wit and wisdom of his charactersbecause of his own waggishness and intelli-gence. He loves a live audience and his unde-niable gift is his ability to communicate withthe audience. He does not simply quote ver-batim the words of his characters, he per-forms biographical dramas that give us alook into the character’s nature, just as hiswolf call delves into the depth of that crea-ture. And he doesn’t try to capture theirwhole lives. He gives us a particular momentor event in their lives.

Naturally, Thomas researches his charac-ters. He seems to pick people to portray whospoke plainly and spoke the truth. That maybe why his performances are so popular. Hischaracters have relevance today.

Who is Taelen Thomas when he is notone of his characters? His close friends callhim Lefty. There is picture of him on theback of his poetry book, “Inside a GallopingBuffalo,” with the caption, “Taelen Thomas,The Lingo Kid.”

Basically he is a story teller. He lovespoetry. Yeats, Hart Crane, Edna St. VincentMillay and Ogden Nash are among hisfavorites. Performing poetry is what got himstarted.

“I did it for the fun of it,” he says. “It wasexciting to be out there without a safety net.”

Taelen Thomas: Carmel’s master of the oral traditionI WISH my column had sound. Then

you would be able to hear the remarkablewolf call that local actor/ historian TaelenThomas makes. It is a long, drawn out,“Hoooooooooooooooo,” that seemingly goeson forever. It is not a spine-tingling call butrather, to paraphrase Jack London, a call thatsounds the deeps of a wolf’s nature, and theparts of his nature that were deeper than he,going back into the womb of time.

Thomas drove up to our meeting in anautomobile, but I wouldn’t have been sur-prised if he showed up on a raft. He definite-ly has that “Call of The Wild” look abouthim. He hails from Lake Bellaire, Mich., inAntrim County, one of the loveliest spots inMichigan’s lower peninsula. He drove an old

Chevy to California to attend Stanford. Heoriginally began studying health and chem-istry. He switched to philosophy because,“chemistry had a six-hour lab on Friday.Philosophy didn’t even have classes onFriday.” So he earned a degree in philosophy, then followed it up with a Masters Degreefrom the University of Hawaii.

One of his father’s boyhood heroes wasStanley Ketchel, a popular boxer from GrandRapids in the early 1900’s, known as theMichigan Assassin. Ketchel was aMiddleweight who often took on fightersmuch bigger and heavier than he was. Hislife ended tragically when he was shot todeath when he was 34 years old. Thomaswrote and performed a play about Ketchel. That got him recognition which led to somecorporate gigs. A friend asked him to doRobert Burns at a dinner. Burns led toSteinbeck, Steinbeck to Jack London, untilhe expanded his repertoire into the very per-sonal art form that keeps him busy on a reg-ular basis.

But, you know, it all goes back to thevoice and wishing there was a way to addstereo speakers to my column so you canhear Taelen reading from something hewrote. I would pick a line from his poem,“Eight Short Takes,” that sums up his joy ofliving: This day is already more than ever Iask or bargain for.
