Section Paper Due June 17 55 Points Purpose: Conduct a thorough review of a specific section of your choice from the Doctrine & Covenants and  personally apply the associated teachings. The following further address the purpose of this assignment. “No one can fully understand the mighty truths within this volume without viewing them through its history.” (  Doctrine and Covenants  Instructor’s Guide: Religion 324- 325, (1981), iv–vi) A deeper and more inspiring understanding can be ours when we come to know the background questions or problems that each section was revealed to resolve. As we come to understand the historical background and relevance, we will come to comprehend the Savior's highly personalized words to the recipient(s). This will lead us to feel empowered and compelled to apply the teachings to ourselves.  (concept taught in  Making Sense of the Doctrine & Covenants, by Steven C. Harper) Guidelines: 1. Section Selection (5 points)  —Choose one Section from the D&C to conduct a thorough review and apply t he associated teachings. Go to the Google Doc (link is on Learning Suite Schedule) and indicate the section you signed up for. This needs to be completed by Monday, May 5. 2. Historical Background (10 points)  —Drawing from various sources, conduct a thorough review of the hi storical  background. At the beginning of your paper, include a summary of t he historical background. 3. Doctrine & Principles (10 points)  —Drawing from various sources, identify and describe some of the doctr ines and  principles that are taught in the section. I nclude in your paper a summary of these doctrines and principles. 4. Personal Application (15 points)  —Include in your paper how you would apply doctrines and principles t aught in the section. 5. Impact (5 points)  —Conclude your paper by briefly describing how your understanding of the historical background influenced your understanding and application of the “mighty truths” found in this section and led you to feel more empowered and compelled to personally apply the doctrines and principles taught in this section. You are also welcome to include any feedback regarding the nature of the this assignment. 6. Sources (5 points)  —You are required to use a minimum of 5 sources. Two r equired sources are The Doctrine & Covenants  and the Joseph Smith Papers website (josephsmithpapers.org). Additional sources of your choice can include history.lds.org, general conference talks,  Ensign articles, books (see me if you need suggestions),  Religious Educator  (rsc.byu.edu), and other credible resources. List your resources at the conclusion of your paper. 7. Peer Review (5 points)  —When you have finished the final draft of your paper, have a peer read and provide feedback on the content of the paper. The peer can be a fellow student in class or anyone (including parents, relatives, roommates, spouse, etc.) outside of class. Be sure the reviewer understands the instructions of the paper. Following your list of sources, include a  brief paragraph that includes: (1) your relation to the reviewer; (2) the reviewers feedback; and (3) any changes you made to the paper due to the reviewers feedback. Paper Format & Submitting Paper  3-5 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt. font   Use APA, MLA, or other formalized format when citing and referencing your sources.   Use the required sections listed above under “Guidelines” as bolded headings in your paper.   Submit your final paper on Learning Suite by June 17, 11:59p. *Extra Credit (5 points)   Your Section Paper is due on June 17 by 11:59pm. However, you can earn 5 extra points if you (1) complete your study of the section (specifically of the Historical Background and review of Doctrine and Principles), and (2) verbally share any of your study in class during the week that your section is addressed. The written portion of the assignment does not need to  be completed, just your study regarding the historical background and doctrine & pr inciples associated with the section. Indicate that you earned this extra credit on the Google Doc where you chose your section.
