In addition to this, our officers and members of our section also mentored multiple student presentations in both the annual poster session and at the Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program (ADCFP) poster showcase. The students presented a variety of posters on topics such as:1. Assessing Student Engagement in “Dealodontics” (Ivan Lo, Lyndon Tran; Mentor: Mitchell Lipp)– An innovative and fun card game for learning orthodontics2. What D4 Students think is important in PG Candidates (Beverly Chen; Mentor: Edmund Khoo) – The results of a survey study exploring what factors students think are important for applying to PG programs.3. Assessment of Perceived Orthodontic Treatment Planning Skills amongst Pre-doc Students (Dayoon Lee, Nicole Liu; Mentor: Edmund Khoo) – A series of clinical scenario based questions that were given to both first year and final year dental students to ascertain the differences between treatment planning modalities between the two groups.4. Written Feedback and Colors: Effects on Students’ Confidence and Performance (Kiyoung Cho, Andrew Hopkins; Mentor: Mitchell Lipp) – The exploration of whether the choice of ink color for grading has an impact on the student’s confidence and performance.Even though we have just finished the hustle and bustle of our annual session, we are already hitting the ground running for next year’s ADEA Annual Session in Chicago, Illinois. The theme of next year’s annual meeting is “Celebrating our Collaborative Spirit”. We have already started to brainstorm on some interesting ideas to fully bring to meaning the theme of the session and we look forward to announcing more exciting news in our Winter Newsletter. The spirit of collaboration is not new to our section, we have always thrived on our collaborative efforts with our parent organization the AAO. We thank the AAO for sending an esteemed team of delegates to the ADEA annual session and attending our section meeting. In the ongoing spirit of our collaboration between the ADEA section on orthodontics and the AAO, our Chair Joana Forsea will be addressing the SOE at the AAO annual session. In addition to that I have the honor and pleasure to present the program “Barriers Pursuing Academia After Graduation – How Can we Help?” at the AAO SOE as well.On behalf of the section officers and the section as a whole, I invite all of you to learn more about the ADEA Section on Orthodontics and consider getting involved. ADEA membership is open (andfree) to all dental educators via their institutions. Our group is growing in both active members and enthusiasm. Let us not forget that ADEA is the primary voice of dental education. If you want to be heard, ADEA is your voice!

Chair’s Message BY DR. JOANA FORSEA Let’s Celebrate our Collaborative Spirit! We are the shapers of our own future for our profession. Let us be the ones who make the bold statement as to what we would like that future to look like! Today, we need your vision of what our Orthodontic Profession will look like. What we would like to teach our residents our colleagues, and our undergraduate students. How we would like to interact and collaborate so that ultimately, our patients are the winners of our work.During our recent Forum, our members shared their challenges in these following areas:

• Curriculum outlines for the Undergraduate Student in the area of Orthodontic Education

• What we should be teaching our PG students, residents and UG students about airway issues and sleep medicine?

• Invisalign and pre-doctoral orthodontic education—what is our role as orthodontic educators?

We should be passionate about what we do…that is the only way to change the future. As one of our members stated during our session, “Shame on us if our students or our colleagues do not enjoy or adhere to the orthodontic teachings that we give. We need to communicate our passions with our colleagues.” Working together we will always find a solution and a way to the top.We welcome any and all who would like to be at the heart of change, to join us! Opportunities are available in various formats including workshops, discussion groups, seminars and poster presentations. We are looking to collaborate in programming that interests you in 2019! Many have already begun to form, join in and become part of our plans.Program submission deadline coming up on June 1st, 2018. For more information, go to http://www.adea.org/2018/submit/, or email us with your thoughts and comments at [email protected] I began this adventure with the SOO at ADEA I had no idea the exhilarating things that could be achieved by being a part of the foundation that will shape the young minds of dentistry and our profession of Orthodontics. It is so encouraging to see how many people believe in working together and that means working from the ground up. Molding and shaping and creating. In this, my last year as your ADEA SOO Chair, I would like to encourage you all to become involved, become a member , become a mason of the foundation that will determine the present and the future of all of our great Orthodontic Specialty!
