TIPS FOR STUDENTS TO

ANSWER ‘SECTION A’ (SPM English

Paper 2)

Page 2: SECTION A

Before the exam, get yourselves familiar with different types of stimulus which can be found in particular section of SPM English paper, namely: linear stimulus (e.g. newspaper excerpts, short texts, dialogues, proverbs, etc.) and non-linear stimulus (e.g. graphs, advertisements, road signs, diagrams, etc.).

Study the stimulus given meticulously. Make sure you understand all the details described in each stimulus thoroughly. Your accurate interpretation of the non-linear stimulus is also important.

Next, read the question which follows carefully – in order for you to find out what is required.

At the same time, identify and highlight any key-word used in each question as a clue to guide you in searching for the detail required (as your answer) from the given stimulus.

Then, go through all the answer-options provided but, DO NOT rush to conclusions at the first sight of the most likely correct answer-option. Please initiate constant reference to the stimulus before you choose and finalize your answer for evidence, as well as, confirmation.

In term of the Cloze-Passage Stimulus (questions 9 – 15), you are advised to read through the incomplete passage first (ignoring the blanks assigned). While reading, please identify the use of Tense (or Part of Speech – e.g. Present/Past/Future Tense); and the central ideas of the text (i.e. what is the text about?). Basically, you will be able to get a glimpse of ideas about the cloze-passage from this first reading, which can be the most helpful clues for you to choose the best answer to fill in each of the blank accordingly.

Finally, mark your answer on the answer-sheet provided properly.

Remember, try your level best to ANSWER ALL the questions. Good Luck…

Questions 9 – 15 are based on the following passage.

It seems certain aromas have the power to stir up strong emotions and even change our mood. A new study of 4000 people in the UK looked at the scents that appeal to us most. Freshly baked bread topped the list. Interestingly, while women claim certain smells make them happy because they are homely or remind them of someone they love, guys prefer exciting and invigorating aromas. Still, 94% of men admitted they wanted their homes to smell nice.

According to Dr. Pamela Dalton, the link between smell and memory is very strong. Smell has the power to revive the past and transport us to a happy time or place, or remind us of a special person, evoking feelings of nostalgia and comfort.
