Cleve Hill bounced back from a disap-
pointing loss to Maryvale in Week 1
and beat Wilson 48-7 last week. QB
Brett Kochanski completed 6 of 10
passes for 137 yards and a TD.
Nagel Honored for Newfane WinNewfane coach Chuck Nagel was named the Buffalo
Bills/ADPRO Sports Coach of the Week after his Panthersbeat Lew-Port 48-18 last week.
The game was only the second night game at Newfane. The Newfane Sports Boosters rented lights and moved thekickoff from 2pm to 7 pm Saturday night.
“A lot of people have toagree for this to happen,”Nagel said. “The head of offi-cials has to agree to do this. The other school has to agreeto do it. We really appreciateLew-Port agreeing to do this.”
The crowd was estimatedat 1,700, the biggest crowd inNewfane history.
“There was a lot of peoplethere,” Nagel said. “We hadthe whole Newfane Little.League there. Two years ago,we had a night game and1,500 people were there.”
The excitement of theevening has spurred talk inthe town of putting in perma-nent lights and playing nightfootball.
“I’m a Newfane guy, bornand raised,” Nagel said. “Iplayed football for Newfane.Yeah, I would love lights here.I think it would be a big thingin Newfane.”
Nagel says that Friday orSaturday night football wouldbe a huge attraction in thesmall town.
“There’s not much goingon in Newfane,” he said. “It’sa safe town. There’s notmuch crime. It’s a great placeto raise kids. We have a couple of great restaurants but theschool is the center of the whole town. Having night footballwould be a great thing for our community.”
Newfane’s 30-point margin of victory was the biggest winin over a decade.
“We took a tough loss against a very tough Lackawannateam in Week 1,” Nagel said. “We really focused on beingready for Lew-Port on Saturday. We focused on coachingthe kids. We worked on our pass protection. We worked onspecial teams. By Saturday night, these kids were reallyready to play. They believed in themselves and it showed ina big way with all those people here. The played a completegame on both sides of the ball.”
The crowd roared early in the game when Chad Dunbartook the ball on a reverse and sped down the sidelines for60 yards. He was knocked out on the Lew-Port 5-yard line.
“It was just great execution on the part of our offensive
line, our quarterback and our tailback. Lew-Port rushedinside and Chad took off outside down the field.”
One play later, Dunbar scored on an 8-yard TD run on thesame play.
Newfane led 13-0 after one quarter and 21-6 early in the2nd frame.
“We were rolling,” Nagelsaid. “I was hoping ourdefense could stay tough andkeep doing the job. Ouroffense needed to keep mov-ing the chains.”
In the loss to Lackawanna,‘moving the chains’ wasn’t aproblem for the Panthers.
“We moved the ball againstLackawanna,” Nagel said, “butwe lost the ball on downsinside the 5 and we lost afumble inside the 10. AgainstLew-Port we were able to fin-ish the drives.”
Late in the first half, holdinga 21-12 lead, Brandon Grosshit Drew Boudeman with a 26-yard TD. Newfane took a 28-12 lead into the locker room.
“That was a huge play,”Nagel said. “Brandon is a 3-year starter. If he’s in distressor getting chased, he can getout of it and make it a positiveplay.”
The celebration in the lock-er room was intense.
“After 2 minutes we told thekids that the game wasn’tover,” Nagel said. “We neededto keep the pedal down.”
Newfane scored 3 moreTDs and led 48-12.
“Every single kid played, which is awesome,” Nagel said.“Everybody had a big game.”
Gross finished the night by completing 10 of 21 passesfor 184 yards and 2 TDs. He also rushed for 130 yards and2 TDs on 13 carries.
Julian Nixon ran 16 times for 156 yards. Dunbar ran for68 yards and 2 TDs on 4 carries. Shayne Harrington caughta screen pass and went 45 yards for a TD.
Nagel played WR and DB at Newfane, graduating in1994. In the fall of 1993, his senior season, Newfane fin-ished undefeated in the regular season but lost a playoffgame to Salamanca.
“I know we can win here,” he said. “We used to win all thetime. Now we have kids who are putting the work in and itshows.”
Nagel and his wife Kristina have a daughter (Melanie, 14)and a son (CJ, 11).

HOBART FOOTBALL
By Mark AdairWilliamsville East fought hard but lost to crosstown rival
Williamsville North 35-18 last week. The Flames, who were heavy underdogs entering the
game, pulled within 21-18early in the 3rd quarter.
“That’s two weeks in arow we have battled hardbut lost,” coach MikeTorrillo said. “We have tofind a way to be able toplay for 4 quarters.”
In a Week 1 loss toStarpoint, the Flamestrailed 7-0 late in the thirdquarter.
“Starpoint scored onthe last play of the 3rdquarter,” Torrillo said, “andthey scored 21 points inthe 4th quarter.”
Torrillo says that, despite the 0-2 start, histeam has played betterthan the final scores haveshown.
“We are doing a lot ofgood things,” he said, “butwe still have things weneed to get better at.”
When the 2017 sched-ule came out, Torrillo knewthat the Flames weregiven a brutal gauntletduring the first half.
With games againstStarpoint, WilliamsvilleNorth, Williamsville Southand Sweet Home, theFlames faced heavy com-petition.
“The kids are giving me everything they have,” Torrillosaid. “I can’t ask for anything more than that.”
The Flames have also had to contend with school con-struction. While their new football stadium will be enviedby many other programs in WNY, it isn’t quite finished yet.
“We did not practice once on our own field until thisweek,” Torrillo said. “It’s gorgeous but there is still con-struction everywhere. The field is ready to go but there arestill fences to be put up. They did a nice job with it. It’sgoing to be gorgeous.”
The players have had to board a bus and rode over tothe middle school for practice every day.
“It’s been a long four weeks,” Torrillo said. “We’ve defi-nitely had some obstacles to overcome. We are just tryingto focus on football and the other stuff will fall into place.”
One final obstacle happened just before the start of the
training camp. Defensive coordinator Chris Heim wasinjured in a weight lifting accident at the school.
“He’s still out of school,” Torrillo said, “so we are down acoach. I have to give a lot of credit to my other coaches. All the assistants have worked really hard.”
If Williamsville East isgoing to survive the firstfour weeks and contend fora Class A playoff spot, theywill need a big season fromsenior Joey Shifflet .
“He was named a teamcaptain last fall before Iwas hired,” Torrillo said,“but I am very comfortablewith him being our leader.”
Shifflet (5-11, 185) wasmoved from CB to S overthe winter.
“He has been key for usthis year,” Torrillo said. “Ifwe make a mistake, he’sthere to cover for us.”
The senior has becomea big hitter in the defensivesecondary.
“He works extremelyhard in the weight room,”Torrillo said. “He workshard at everything heneeds to do with his game.”
Torrillo said that Shifflet’sis reacts quickly to playshappening in front of him.
“His knowledge of thegame is incredible,” Torrillosaid. “You don’t have to tellhim anything more thanonce. He knows the game.He was brought up in foot-ball. I’m sure he talked
about football at home all the time.”It’s not surprising that Shifflet has an incredible knowl-
edge of how to play the game. Football is in his DNA andhis family tree.
Joey’s grandfather is Joe Shifflet, the legendary SweetHome coach who finally retired in 2009 with 200 careervictories.
“I played for Coach Shifflet at Sweet Home,” Torrillosaid. “He has been a mentor to me for years. He has anwealth of knowledge and I’ve always welcomed hisadvice.”
Torrillo says that the elder Shifflet, who actually earnedhis 200th career win while coaching at Williamsville East, has transitioned smoothly from the sidelines to the stands.
“He’s a coach,” Torrillo said. “He’ll always be a coach. But he’s a grandpa, too and he supports his grandkids.”

After opening the season with a loss to
Williamsville South, Clarence rebounded
to beat Niagara Falls 26-0 last week. The
Red Devils evened their record at 1-1
with the win.
“After we lost
to South, we
watched film the
next day,” Clarence
coach Paul Burgio
said, “and 12 kids
came with me to
scout Niagara
Falls. The kids
were committed to
bouncing back.”
The Devils led
6-0 at the half and
took control after
the break.
“We had previ-
ous experience
playing the Falls,”
Burgio said. “We
knew they were a
Spread football
team. We know
what they typically
like to run.”
The Devils will travel to Jamestown
this week for a key AA league contest.
After winning just one game in 2016,
Jamestown is 2-0.
“Jamestown is an improved team over
last year,” Burgio said. “Wins don’t come
easy and beating Jamestown won’t be
easy either.”
If Clarence is going to contend for the
AA title this season, they will need a big
year from junior WR John Stevens.
“He’s sneaky fast,” Burgio said. “He
runs a 4.7 in the 40-
yard dash and he
runs great routes.”
Stevens (5-9,
165) also starts at
CB for Clarence.
“He’s not our
biggest kid,” Burgio
said, “but he’s the
strongest kid on the
team.”
Burgio says that
Stevens is a tough
defender.
“He is our num-
ber-1 kid for cover-
age,” he said. “We
put him on top
receiver of the other
team,”
Stevens, who
maintains an acade-
mic average of 96
is on the High
Honor Roll at Clarence. He also plays on
the basketball team and is an intense com-
petitor, according to Burgio.
“If you aren’t ready to practice against
him, you’ll have a long day,” Burgio said.
“No such thing as half-speed with him.
He’s ready every single day.”

Starpoint led 20-0 after one quarter
and steadily pulled away to beat Kenmore
West 49-14 last week.
“We went into the game expecting a
battle ,” Starpoint coach Al Cavagnaro
said. “We felt we
needed to make a
statement in our
division. Ken West
is normally an AA
team and being up
20-0 after the first
quarter was a
shock to us.”
The Spartans
are 2-0 and tied for
first in the A North.
They won the
league title last
year and lost in the
Class A title game
to Bennett.
“We were
young last year,”
Cavagnaro said.
“We have kids who
started and lost at
the Ralph. We
have some kids
who didn’t get a chance to play. They all
want to go back there and win.”
Cavagnaro says that his players began
working as soon as the 2016 season ended.
“We’ve been in the weight room since
last November,” he said. “We had a
power-lifter in twice a week to coach us
in the weight room. We did team camps
and passing tournaments. The kids know
it will take more to get farther than last
year.”
If Starpoint is going to win the Class A
title this season,
they will need a big
year from senior
Sam Mazzara.
“Sam is the last
of 3 Mazzara broth-
ers to play here,”
Cavagnaro said.
Mazzara is a 3-
year starter who
was named an all-
league player each
season.
“He is our lock-
down cornerback,”
Cavagnaro said.
“He covers the
other team’s best
receiver.”
Mazzara (6-0,
185) also starts at
WR and leads the
team with 8 recep-
tions for 126 yards.
“He runs great routes,” Cavagnaro said.
“He’s fast, strong and has great hands.”
Mazzara has an academic average in
the 90s and is on the Honor Roll.
“I know St. John Fisher and Buff State
are very interested in him,” Cavagnaro
said. “A lot of D-3 programs are.”

After opening the season with a loss to
Iroquois, West Seneca East bounced back
in a big way as they beat Lake Shore 41-0
last week.
“We played a very sloppy game in
Week 1,” coach Jim
Maurino said. “We
felt we gave the
game away with
penalties and
turnovers. We
played as poorly as
we possibly could.”
Maurino made
some changes
before the game at
Lake Shore.
“We had to
shore up the block-
ing and tackling,”
he said. “We needed
to get back to
basics. We had
some injuries and
guys stepped up.”
The Trojans led
28-0 at the half and
were never serious-
ly threatened by
Lake Shore.
Jacob Maurino rushed 14 times for 175
yards and 4 TD. He also caught an 82-yard
TD pass and recorded 2 sacks on defense.
The defense was also solid, earning a
shut out victory.
“Our defense really improved over one
week,” Maurino said. “They played tough.”
If the Trojans are going to contend for
the A South title, they will need a big year
from senior Drew Woltz.
“Drew is a very unselfish player,”
Maurino said. “He’s
asked to block more
than carry the ball.
He’s good at block-
ing and he takes
pride in it.”
Woltz (5-10,
175) starts at WB
and ILB on defense.
“He gets about 6
to 8 carries a game,”
Maurino said. “He’s
a good athlete so we
are trying to get him
more touches.”
Woltz, a team
captain, made a
team-high 10 tackles
in the win over Lake
Shore.
“Drew played a
very disciplined
game this week,”
Maurino said. “He is
a high-motor kid with great energy and he’s
a good leader.”
Maurino says that Woltz directs the
defense on the field.
“He feels comfortable talking to the
team,” he said “He is that one guy that
keeps your defense going.”

East Aurora lost to Burgard 38-0 last
week and fell to 0-2 on the season.
“I still feel good about the team,” new
coach John Swiniuch said. “The kids are
still working hard. They haven’t quit in
any games.”
The transition
hasn’t been easy
this season.
“We are still
trying to learn a
new offense,”
Swiniuch said. “We
have had mistakes
that have cost us.”
The Blue Devils
offense moved the
ball in both games.
“We lost 3 fum-
bles against
Burgard,”
Swiniuch said.
“Those are drive
killers. If we elimi-
nate the mistakes,
we’ll be OK as we
get more comfort-
able with the
offense.”
East Aurora will play at defending
Class B champion Dunkirk this weekend.
“B-1 is tough,” Swiniuch said. “We
have 7 very difficult games. Dunkirk will
be another tough test. The big thing is the
kids are hanging with it and still working
hard.”
If East Aurora is going to turn the sea-

Swiniuch, a
team captain, is also
a member of the
track team. He maintains an academic
average in the 90s and ranks 29th in his
class academically.
“He is a focused young man,”
Swiniuch said. “He leads by example. As

he has the respect of the entire program.”

Depew lost to Albion 28-7 last week
and dropped to 0-2. The Wildcats led 7-0
at the half.
“We’ve only played half a football
game both times this season,” coach
Brian Wilson said.
“We have to figure
out how to play 48
minutes.”
Depew lost a
tough 21-19 deci-
sion to Dunkirk in
Week 1.
“We played a
good second half
against Dunkirk,”
Wilson said, “and
we played a good
first half against
Albion. We need to
make plays the
whole game. That’s
what we need to
figure out.”
If the Blue
Devils are going to
turn the season
around and make a
run at the Class B
playoffs, they will need more big games
from senior lineman Carter Post.
“Carter is a good athlete,” Wilson said.
“He also plays hockey and lacrosse. He’s
usually in very good condition, too.”
Post, a 2-way starter, leads both lines
as he starts at RT and DT.
“He’s a student of the game,” Wilson
said. “He’ll ask questions on how to
adjust his technique to different situations.
He’s constantly trying to get better.”
Post (6-3, 245) is a team captain.
“The players
chose him almost
unanimously,”
Wilson said. “He’s
a great player on
the field. He’ll
work hard to figure
things out and help
his teammates.”
Post has played
hockey for 6 years
and is a defenseman
for the Depew
lacrosse team. The
Wildcats will play
their first season of
varsity lacrosse this
spring.
“He’s constantly
in-season,” Wilson
said. “He’s a kid
who spends quite a
bit of time in the
weight room, too.”
Post maintains an academic average of
96 and is a member of the National Honor
Society.
“He’s a smart kid,” Wilson said. “He
wants to play college football and I think
he will definitely get an opportunity. He’s
a good teammate and very unselfish.”

Lackawanna built a 22-8 lead at the
half and went on to beat Eden 52-14 last
week. The Steelers scored 4 TDs in the
3rd quarter to pull away.
“We’ve played pretty solid football so
far,” coach Adam
Tardiff said.
Lackawanna is
now 2-0, 1-0 in
league games.
“The nucleus of
our team has been
starting for 3
years,” Tardiff said.
“Our QB, our
receivers, our
backs, our tight end
all started for me as
10th graders. They
have all been play-
ing together all that
time.”
Last year,
Lackawanna start-
ed the season with
a pair of losses.
The Steelers fin-
ished the season 4-
3 and upset
Medina in the first round of the Class B
playoffs.
“I think the kids matured after the two
losses,” Tardiff said. “They saw that it
took a little bit more at practice. The kids
starting working harder. We beat Depew
and when on a good winning streak.”
In the win over Eden, Khalil Horton
rushed 13 times for 187 yards and 3 TDs.
He scored on runs of 7, 36 and 42 yards
and also returned an interception 22 yards
for another TD.
“He has speed,”
Tardiff said. “He
has always had
speed. But he
worked hard in the
offseason and he
put on 25 pounds of
muscle.”
Horton (5-8,
205) has rushed for
415 yards through
the first two games.
“He still has great
vision and speed,”
Tardiff said, “but he’s
powering through
people now.”
Horton, a team
captain, also starts
at OLB for the
Steelers defense
and leads the team
in tackles.
“A lot of the D-3
schools and the smaller D-1AA schools
are looking at him,” Tardiff said.
“Horton is in the top 20 of his class
academically and maintains an academic
average of 91.
“He’s focused and quiet,” Tardiff said.
“He’s a good captain and teammate.”

Cleve Hill bounced back from a disap-
pointing loss to Maryvale in Week 1 and
beat Wilson 48-7 last week.
“Maryvale was a good indicator of
things we needed to work on,” coach
Glen Graham said.
“It was a great
learning experi-
ence.”
Despite losing
to Maryvale,
Graham says it
helps having a
rivalry game to
open the season.
“It helps both
programs,” he said.
“We really have to
focus on the first
game. This is an
annual event for
Cheektowaga and
the players and
fans love it. I’ve
found we have a
better week of
practice and a more
sustained effort for
the Maryvale
game.”
In the win over Wilson, the Golden
Eagles led 8-0 after one quarter.
“Wilson has 10 of 11 starters back but
we were able to get up on them early.”
Graham said.
Cleve Hill scored 22 points in the 2nd
quarter and led 30-7 at the half.
Aaron Wahler rushed 15 times for 148
yards and 4 TDs to lead the ground game.
“We were abe to get after them,”
Graham said. “The kids played well.”
QB Brett
Kochanski complet-
ed 6 of 10 passes
for 137 yards and a
TD.
“He’s not as big
a running threat as
we have had in the
past but he can run
the football,”
Graham said. “He
also gives us a nice
balance with the
skill set he has.”
Kochanski com-
pleted 10 of 14
passes against
Maryvale.
“That was his
first varsity start,”
Graham said, “and
he was even more
comfortable against
Wilson.”
Kochanski, who has an academic aver-
age in the 90s, has already been offered a
scholarship to play baseball at St.
Bonaventure after high school.
“He’s a pretty focused kid,” Graham
said. “He’s very goal-oriented in the class
and in athletics.”

Gowanda suffered a heart-breaking 1-
point loss to Cass Valley-Falconer last
week.
“It was our first league game,” coach
Sean Gabel said. “We were disappointed.
We had a lot of
emotions. We just
have to get better
and keep working.”
The Panthers
scored with 5 min-
utes left in the
game to take a 26-
20 lead and looked
like they would
earn their first win
of the season. But
CVF returned the
ensuing kickoff 85
yards to the 1-yard
line. CVF scored on
the next play and
won 27-26.
“Losing this
game will be a test
of character,” Gabel
said. “We have to
get back with each
other and get better
together.”
Caleb Maloney carried 19 times for 183
yards and 2 TDs for Gowanda.
“We moved the ball,” Gabel said. “We
just had a breakdown on special teams.”
The Panthers host Silver Creek in their
first home game of the season this week.
If Gowanda is going to stay in the race
to make the Class C playoffs, they will be
relying on senior lineman Robbie Clutter.
“He started for us last year,” Gabel
said. “He is a great young man. He is
relentless and he
doesn’t quit. He
gives everything he
has on every play.”
Clutter (6-1,
170) starts at OT
and DE.
“He’s just 170
pounds but he plays
a lot bigger,” Gabel
said. “He’s tough,
he’s in the right
position every time.
He starts both ways
because he’s not
afraid to work. He
earned the starting
spots.”
Clutter is among
the Panthers leading
tacklers.
“He is relentless
on defense,” Gabel
said. “He keeps the
edge and he consistently makes plays.”
Clutter also plays basketball for Pine
Valley.
“He’s a great young man,” Gabel said.
“He’s very quiet and respectful and a good
student. He’s just a well-rounded student-
athlete and a good team player.”

CSP led 21-12 at the half but scored
twice in the third quarter and pulled away
from Cattaraugus-LV with a 41-18 win.
“The kids played well,” coach Ty
Harper said. “They played a complete
football game.”
Tanner Ramsey
rushed for 119
yards and a TD to
lead the ground
game. Garrett
Hinsdale complet-
ed 12 of 19 passes
for 153 yards and 2
TDs.
CSP has started
the season 2-0.
“We’ve never
been 2-0,” Harper
said. “We’ve only
been a program for
3 years. It’s pretty
exciting.”
CSP is in their
third season after
merging Clymer,
Sherman and
Panama into one
program.
“A lot of our learning was just getting
a routine,” Harper said. “All of our play-
ers have only played for CSP and don’t
know anything different. This is just what
we do now.”
Harper says that initially, people were
hesitant to merge the programs.
“Any time you are doing something
new, people will be hesitant,” he said. “I
think we have a full buy-in to the pro-
gram now. We started to see our kids turn
the corner last year when we won 5 of our
last 6 games.”
If the Wolfpack
is going to chal-
lenge for the Class
D title this season,
they will need a big
year from senior
captain Thomas
Delahoy.
“He’s a 2-year
starter,” Harper said.
“He missed his
sophomore season
with a knee injury
but he started both
ways last year.”
Delahoy (6-2,
280) starts at G and
DT. He was named a
1st-team all-league
player in 2016.
“On top of his
size, he works hard
in practice,” Harper
said. “His technique is pretty good, he has
good feet and plays with a good pad level.”
Delahoy, who also plays basketball
and baseball, is on the honor roll with an
academic average in the 90s.
“He’s a very bright kid,” Harper said.
“He’s a focused kid and he’s intense.”

O’Hara fell behind at the half and lost
to St. Joe’s 41-14 last week.
O’Hara is now 0-2 after playing two
large private schools.
In week 1, the Hawks lost to Mt. St.
Joseph’s of
Baltimore, a top 10
team in the state of
Maryland.
“I actually feel
pretty good,” coach
Shaquille Dudley
said. “We haven’t
been dominated.
Player for player
we are just as tal-
ented as those two
big schools. We just
don’t have as many
players as they do
and they wore us
down. We are com-
peting hard for 4
quarters and that’s
all I can ask for.”
Dudley does not
regret scheduling
large schools.
“I wanted to
give our kids an opportunity to play foot-
ball at the highest level,” he said. “That’s
why you go to a private school. We have
great academics and I want our kids to be
challenged mentally, spiritually and physi-
cally.”
If O’Hara is going to get in the win
column against Batavia this week, they
will need another big game from junior
Remir Velazquez.
“He’s tough as nails,” Dudley said.
“Wherever we ask him to play, he’ll play.
Two years ago he
played center as a
freshman.”
Velazquez (6-1,
215) now starts at
LB in addition to
playing several
positions on the OL.
“He has played
TE,” Dudley said.
“When our starting
tackle went down,
Remir finished the
game at left tackle.”
Velazquez is a
team captain,
despite being just a
junior.
“He’s dedicat-
ed,” Dudley said,
“and he’s been dedi-
cated to making
himself better. He
works harder than
anyone.”
Velazquez also plays for the O’Hara
basketball team and is on the Merit Roll.
“I put him on the field as a freshman,”
Dudley said. “His confidence and his
body grew. This past year everything just
clicked for him.”

Iroquois improved to2-0 on the season with30-13 win over Hamburglast week.
“Everything is goingaccording to plan,” coachRob Pitzonka sid. “Weput a lot of work in duringthe off-season. Wepreached all off-seasonthat the stronger we wereand the better conditionwe were in, we wouldhave the stamina for thesecond half.”
Pitzonka, in his firstseason as a head coach, says stamina is crucialfor the Chiefs this fall.
“We are running anup-tempo offense,” hesaid. “We want to aver-age about 13 seconds inbetween plays. Rightnow, because of the workthey put in, our guys arebuilt for that.”
Pitzonka says that hechanged the Iroquoisoffense out of necessity.
“With HS football youhave to gear your game-plan to the kids,” he said.“We lost some big, pow-erful players to gradua-tion. We are a smallerteam this season. We have one kid that is 250 pounds ormore.”
The lack of size meant a change in tactics.“We have guys who are strong,” Pitzonka said, “but we
don’t have a lot of height and weight. We needed to be inshape and in condition.”
The players embraced the program.“We had 120 workout sessions over the off-season,”
Pitzonka said, “and a lot of kids made almost every ses-sion. They put in the effort.”
The extra effort seems to be paying dividends in theearly season. Iroquois trailed West Seneca East late inthe 3rd quarter and rallied for a 33-26 win.
Against Hamburg, Iroquois led 21-7 at the half and
stretched the lead to 30-7 in the 4th quarter.
The Chiefs are alsoplaying with emotion, especially senior WRMike King.
“Mike is Mister Do-Everything,” Pitzonkasaid. “He has been allover the field.”
In the win over WestSeneca East, Kingcaught 7 passes for 88yards.
He also returned afumble 60 yards for aTD, blocked a PAT, andsealed the game with aninterception with :11 leftin the game.
“He has always had aknack for making big,drama-filled plays rightwhen we need it themost,” Pitzonka said.
Mike King is playinginspired football thisseason, despite dealingwith a profound familytragedy.
On November 6th,2016, Mikes older broth-er Anthony was killed inan accidental shooting.
“We had just wrappedup the season,” Pitzonka
said. “A couple of weeks after our last game, I got aphone call at 1 am.”
Pitzonka looked at his phone and saw the name ofJared Gasz - one of his players.
“When one of your players is calling at that time ofnight, it’s never good,” Pitzonka said.
Gasz gave Pitzonka devastating news. Anthony Kinghad been killed a few hours earlier.
“One of his friends was handling a gun and it acciden-tally went off,” Pitzonka said.
Anthony King, 19 at the time and a student at theUniversity at Buffalo, died at the hospital.

Anthony’s friend, Jake Klocek, who is now 20, wasarrested and will be sentenced Sept. 28. He faces any-where from probation to 15 years in prison.
“It was not a good time in our school,” Pitzonka said. “Itshocked the entire community.”
Pitzonka says he had trouble figuring out how to handlethe situation with his players.
“Kids look to teachers, coaches and grown-ups on howto handle those situations,” he said. “But something likethis, especially when it’s one of your player’s, affects uspretty deep, too.”
Pitzonka says that he also had to try to help Anthony’syounger brother Mike, who was still in his program.
“Mike is a phenomenal kid,” Pitzonka said. “He worksvery hard in the classroom. I had the opportunity to coachhim last year in football and last spring in lacrosse. He isjust a great teammate.”
King says that he went into a very dark place when hisbrother died.
“We were very close,” Mike said. “We we’re like thesame person. We always had everything in common andwe always had each others back. We hardly ever fought.”
Mike also said that.“The first couple of months I couldn’t focus in school,”
he said. “It still doesn’t seem like it can be true. Once westarted the off-season work, it was 5 days a week and itkind of took my mind off it.”
The players on the team, which was already close, real-ly pulled tighter after tragedy.
“We are a very close team and that helped a lot,” Mikesaid. “Everybody in the community was there for us.”
Pitzonka actually got a custom-made 17-yard markermade to honor Anthony King, who wore #17.
“A lot of our kids were friends with Anthony,” he said. “Iwanted something that we could gather around on the fieldand channel our thoughts. I thought it would be a cool ideato have our kids huddle around a 17-yard marker.”
However, finding one, was not easy.“I had to make a ton of phone calls,” Pitzonka said.
“Most people buy a set of 10s through the 50. Nobodymakes a 17-yard marker. I finally got a hold of theChampro company. They heard the idea and ran with it.They made it, shipped it out to us before the first gameand they didn’t even charge us.”
The grounds crew also painted an Iroquois helmet onthe field with the number 17 on it.
Before the game, the players gathered around the yardmarker and a moment of silence was observed.
Early in the first quarter of Iroquois’ win over Hamburg, the Chief’s took possession on the 50 after a punt. The ballsat on the #17 that commemorates Anthony King.
On the snap, Mike suddenly found himself wide open.He caught a pass over the middle and sped 50 yards for aTD. No one came close to bringing him down.
“That was really cool,” Mike said. “That made the gameeven more special for me. I know Anthony was with me.”

Williamsville North overcame a slug-
gish first half to earn a 35-18 non-league
win over crosstown rival Williamsville
East.
Despite being heavily favored, the
Spartans led just 21-18 in the 3rd quarter.
“East came to play,” North coach Mike
Mammoliti said. :”In the first half, East
played like it was a rivalry game and we
didn’t.”
Mammoliti says
he tried to warn his
players that the
Flames would not
be intimidated by
the Spartans.
“They didn’t
heed my warning,”
Mammoliti said.
“East came to play
and they played
hard. At the half,
we had to have a
little re-focusing.”
Mammoliti says
he “re-focused’ his
players in loud,
emphatic voice.
“You could say
that,” he said. “The
kids woke up. I
think it showed in
the way they
played in the second half.”
The Spartans are 2-0 and are fueling
excitement about their playoff chances.
“This is a really talented group,”
Mammoliti said. “There are as many good
athletes in this group that we have had in
a very long time.”
No less than 15 kids have joined the
varsity after a year on the JV team.
“That group of kids has not lost at the
modified or the JV level,” Mammoliti
said. “They are now 26-0.”
The athleticism is matched with size.
“They are extremely talented athletes,”
Mammoliti said. “The top 6 players on the
JV basketball team are also football play-
ers. They are all over 6-feet tall. They are
just big, athletic kids.”
However, Mammoliti says, despite the
talent, immaturity has also shown through
the first two games.”
“They are so used to being better than
other teams,” he said, “the last 2 weeks
we started slow because they relied on
that. Well, that doesn’t work on the varsi-
ty. Varsity football is different. You can be
talented but every team comes to play and
they found that out the last two weeks.”
If the Spartans are going to harness
their talent and advance deep into the
playoffs this year, they will need a big
year from junior LB Scott Becht.
“He’s a junior,”
Mammoliti said,
“but he is already a
3-year starter. He
has started both
ways since he was a
freshman.”
Becht actually
won a starting job
on the varsity
before he was offi-
cially enrolled in
high school.
“He came and
practiced with us in
the summertime
before his freshman
year,” Mammoliti
said. “He was better
than anybody we
had at the time at
LB. He was already
bigger and smarter
than most of the
other kids.”
After 1 game at LB, the Spartans had
an injury on the offensive line.
“We put him in at tackle,” Mammoliti
said. “He dominated and he never left.”
Becht (6-4, 226) is a solid student that
maintains an academic average of 95,
despite having a class schedule loaded
with Advanced Placement classes.
“His intelligence is superior,”
Mammoliti said. “He spends as much
time watching film as anybody I have
ever seen. He logged on last week and he
watched more than 6 hours of film.”
Becht is also a team captain.
“He’s a natural-born leader,”
Mammoliti said. “Other kids followed
him in the off-season. A lot of times, the
kids will have a Players Only Meeting.
They’ll eat dinner at someone’s house and
they watch even more film. He leads the
show on that, too. He just has that passion
about football. That’s what leaders do.”

By Mark AdairAlfred opened the season two weeks ago with a 20-17
win over Ithaca and enjoyed a bye week last weekend.“I actually don’t like a bye this early but we don’t get to
choose that,” Alfred coach Bob Rankl said. “The confer-ence has rotations as to who gets their bye each weekbut we want to get start-ed and get somemomentum.”
In the win overIthaca, the Saxonstrailed 17-13 at the half.Alfred shut the Bombersout over the last 30minutes.
“We definitely did notplay our best footballgame,” Rankl said. “Nodoubt about that. Weneed to improve everysingle week.”
Rankl did say thatthe only stat that mat-ters is the final score.
“I’m not dissatisfiedbut we definitely needto be cleaner,” he said.“We have stuff to workon.”
Alfred, ranked 21stin the nation, will hostUtica in their firstEmpire 8 game thisweekend.
“Every win is vital,”Rankl said. “It’s a dog-eat-dog conference.Blaise Faggiano hasdone a great job withthat program and weknow we’ll have ourhands full with them.”
If Alfred is going towin a second straightEmpire 8 Conference title, they will need another big yearfrom senior captain AJ Licata.
“AJ is an outstanding student and an outstanding foot-ball player,” Rankl said. “He’s pretty much everything youwant in the leader of your football program.”
Licata starts at OLB and was Alfred’s leading tackler in2016 as the Saxons finished 12-1, setting a school recordfor most wins in a season. He finished the season with153 tackles, just one off the single-season school record.
“He runs well, he’s strong and he’s tough,” Rankl said.“He does everything well.”
Alfred advanced to the NCAA Final 8. They were alsogiven the Lambert Cup by the ECAC as the top DivisionIII team in Northeast.
Rankl recruited AJ out of Frontier High School.“I watched him on film and I could tell he was a very
aggressive football player,” he said. “Did I think he wouldturn out as good as hehas? Probably not but hehas worked his tail off tobecome the kind of playerhe is.”
Licata, a Finance Majorwho maintains a GPA of3.62, was also given theJay Berwanger Award asthe top Division III playerin the northeast.
“It’s a testament to thekind of season he had lastyear,” Rankl said. “Thoseawards usually go to run-ning backs or quarter-backs. It shows how muchhe is respected by theteams he has playedagainst. He’s been amaz-ing.”
This summer, Licatawas named a first-teamDivision III All-American.
“AJ deserved it,” Ranklsaid, “but he would tellyou that he’s more inter-ested in winning footballgames. We are muchmore interested in winningfootball games, confer-ence games and playoffgames.”
Licata was chosen as ateam captain by his team-mates.
“The other players seehim as a guy who is a
leader,” Rankl said. “He will always does the right thing, inhis pads, in the off-season and outside of football. He is aguy you can count on and other people respect him.”
Licata is also driven to win football games, accordingto Rankl.
“He’s a very intense competitor on the field,” he said.“He doesn’t like to lose and loves to compete. He doesn’tlead by yelling at people.”
Incredibly, Licata may even be better this year than hewas in 2016.
“He has improved every year,” Rankl said, “and he isplaying his best football right now.”

It’s not the critic who counts.
Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.
The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;
who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...
...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,
so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.
