East Aurora lineman Jaycen Watts isa massive lineman (6-5, 290) whohas amazing quickness for a big play-er. Watts is a Trenc Trophy candidateand is capable of destroying an offen-sive game plan.

Sweet Home wideout KJ Zinermonmay be the fastest player on a SweetHome roster that is loaded withspeed. If Zinermon gets a chance toreturn kicks, he has the ability to turngames around.

North Tonawanda won all 13 games and won theschoolʼs first NYS championship in 2009 but coachEric Jantzi would like to forget the

“We said to the kids at the ring ceremony,” Jantisaid. “that we were not State champions any more. Weare just like everybody else right now and our focus isto beat Kenmore West in Week 1 We have to be betterthan we were inour scrimmage ifwe are going todo that.”

While theLumberjacks didgraduate somekey players fromlast yearʼs team, there are sixreturning playersto the offenseand seven ondefense.

Jantziʼs squadwill be helped bythe return of fra-ternal twins thatplayed huge rolesin the 2009 titlerun.

Joe and DanMontesanti areseniors this year.

Joe Montesantiburst into themediaʼs eye dur-ing the post-sea-son. The junior was named the MVP of three straightplayoff games, including the ʻJacks 54-7 win overLancaster in Ralph Wilson Stadium.

“He was the Player of the Game on either offenseor defense throughout the state playoffs,” Jantzi said.“He really played well for three games in a row.”

Joe Montesanti will also be moving to quarterbackthis fall, replacing Mike Tuzzo, who graduated in June.

Montesanti did play some quarterback in relief ofTuzzo last season but the bulk of his time was spent atrunning back.

“Joe has always been a quarterback in our system,”Jantzi said, “but we had Mike Tuzzo, who was a 2-yearstarter, last year. It just fit us better to have Joe playmore running back. We try to have our best athletesget the ball in their hands at all times.”

Montesanti will certainly be a running threat asquarterback.

“Heʼs had training at quarterback in our system thelast couple of years,” Jantzi said, “and he did a lot ofstuff in the off-season. Heʼs come pretty far.”

Dan Montesanti, who is 13 minutes older than Joe,started every game at outside linebacker and alsoplays fullback, tight end and wide receiver.

“Heʼs arguably our best all-around football player,”Jantzi said. “Heʼs moving to defensive line this yearand heʼll play wherever we need him on offense.”

This past off-season, Dan Montesanti added 25pounds to hisframe.

“He did a lot ofwork in theweight room,”Jantzi said. “Itpaid off for him.”

Joe says thathe is excitedabout the switchto quarterbackthis season.

“Running backis a lot different,”he said. “Iʼm defi-nitey a little ner-vous but I like it. Iget the ball in myhands on everyplay. I have a lotto improve onthatʼs for sure.”

Joe says thathe and Dan areextremely close.

“Heʼs alwaysbeen with me,”Joe said. “Weʼve

been on almost every team together since the firstgrade. We fight like once a year.”

Dan says that both twins are focused on winningevery week and work hard to make each other better.

“This very could be the last year we play together,”Dan said. “I hope we are both healthy enough to playin college. We donʼt really want to separate but each ofus has a goal to play at the highest level we can.Weʼve always had to compete with someone in ourown house. Neither one of us wants to slow the otherone down or hold the other one back. He pushes meand I push him.”

Dan also says that, if this is the last season thebrothers play together, he would love to go as repeatchampions.

“In the back of your mind, it would be so awesometo repeat,” Dan said, “but itʼs a whole different group ofkids and a whole different environment this year. Ihope we can do it again but we have to win every sin-gle week for that to happen.”

Johnsonsteps in for

Sweet HomeSweet Home won their

second straight NYS cham-pionship in 2009 and has a26-game winning streakentering this season.

The Panthers had heavygraduation losses. Just 4starters return to the offense.

“We have a lot of holes tofill,” coach John Faller said.“We havenʼt proven anythingyet.”

Jordan Johnson will stepinto the starting spot at QBafter serving as a back-up toPat McMahon last fall.

“Heʼs such a tremendousrunner with 4.5 speed,”Faller said. “Defenses aregoing to have to really con-sider him in the backfield.”

Faller says that Jordan, while a talented athlete, does need some polish.

“He needs to work on hispassing a bit,” Faller said.“He hasnʼt been a starter atQB before. He has to step inlike Pat did last year.”

Faller did say that Jordanis mentally ready to takeover the position.

“He knows the system,”Faller said. “Physically,Jordan can make all thethrows. Now itʼs just takingcare of the game from theshoulders up but heʼs astrong kid mentally.”

Johnson is a junior whosaw time as a sophomoreRB in 2009.

“The good thing is thatwe have him for two years,”Faller said.

Hopes High at IroquoisDespite a completely new

lineup, Iroquois finished 6-3and advanced to the ClassA semifinals in 2009.

“We had nine seniors onthe team last year,” coachFrank Payne said. “We have37 kids back this season.”

Iroquois lost twice toSweet Home and once toWilliamsville South so hopesare high that the Chiefs cancontend for the Class A titleagain.

“We have a lot of varsityexperience,” Payne said.“Iʼm cautiously optimisticbecause we have anothertough schedule.”

One of the players thathas Payne encouraged isMike Siejak, a 5-10, 165-pound senior.

Siejak is a 3-year starterat CB and also saw time atRB in 2009.

“I think Mike is one of thebest cornerbacks in WNY,”Payne said. “Heʼs also avery good running back butheʼs unknown around thearea and he has somethingto show to people.”

Siejak was an all-league

player at CB last fall.“Sweet Home did not

have a completion againsthim in two games,” Paynesaid. “Heʼs extremely athlet-ic and smart football player.”

Siejak will have moreopportunities on offense thisseason.

“He hasnʼt had a lot ofchances to run the ball,”Payne said, “but heʼll get alot of touches this year.”

Diminuco has 47 playerson the roster and a largegroup of returning starters.

“We have good seniorleadership this year,”Diminuco said. “Itʼs been apleasure to coach this groupof guys.”

One of the seniors thatDiminuco will be relying onis Dakota Peel.

Peel started the seasonat wide receiver but wasmoved to running back afterCole Huston was injured.

“We moved Dakota inand out of the backfield afterCole was hurt,” Diminuco

Peel is a quiet leader, according to Diminuco.

“We fell short,” McGrathsaid. “We expected to go theStadium. Thatʼs somethingwe expect every year.”

The Wildcats will getanother shot at a playoff runthis season with junior QBAaron Ertel calling the sig-nals.

Eden coach Chuck Tilley has had toinstall an entirely new lineup for the2010 season after heavy graduationlosses.

Incredibly, Eden lost all 11 starterson defense.

“Iʼve never had that before,” Tilleysaid. “The most Iʼve ever replaced is 8but last year we had 11 seniors start. We had a lot of juniors who were goodfootball players and saw a lot of timebut they didnʼt start.”

Tilley is encouraged by the fact thatEdenʼs JV team went 7-1 last season.

“Iʼm sure weʼll struggle at timesbecause of youth,” Tilley said. “I donʼtthink we will shut out 6 opponentsagain. Weʼll make some mistakes andweʼll get better as season goes on.”

Eden has three starters returning onoffense, including senior quarterbackKyle Zittel.

“Kyle is a real good athlete,” Tilleysaid. “He was all-WNY in swimming andlacrosse. Heʼs being recruited by PennState and Cornell for lacrosse.”

Tiley says with so many new play-ers, having a veteran QB is crucial.

“Heʼs our only senior in the back-field,” Tilley said. “He played a lot as asophomore and junior and weʼll reapthe benefits of that.”

Zittel played well in Edenʼs scrim-mage, completing 10 of 11 passes.

“He has a good arm, runs well andheʼs strong,” Tilley said. “Heʼs a goodleader and the kids like him. He did wellas a punter, too.”

year,” Bergan said, “and heʼsa little bit quicker. Heʼll beplaying both ways and weare expecting a big yearfrom him.”

This will be Fisherʼs thirdseason as a starter.

“He started as a DBwhen he was a freshman,”Bergan said.

Fisher was 2nd on theteam in rushing in 2009.

“He doesnʼt mind con-tact,” Bergan said. heʼll puthis nose in there. We needthat leadership this year.”

Dragons Reload in DMaple Grove finished 8-2

in 2009 and lost the Class Dtitle game to Randolph.

And, according to coachCurt Fischer, the Dragonswill have to over come somesignificant injuries this year.

“We lost best lineman forthe season,” Fischer said,“and we lost our #1 receiverSkylar Liddell with a brokencollarbone.”

Alex Grace, who servedas the back-up QB to ChrisSecky last fall, is steppinginto starting role this year.

“Alex started at slotreceiver all year,” Fischersaid, “but we got him a lot oftime at quarterback too. Healso played as a freshman.”

The injuries makeGraceʼs transition to starterall the more important.

“Heʼs had two great yearsof getting experience,”Fischer said. “We knew hewas going to be the QB thisyear. Heʼs a good athlete. He had a great camp andwe trust him.”

Fischer says that Graceis finding his way as aleader on the team.

“Heʼs becoming a leaderand thatʼs one of the mostimportant things about a QB.He has a very strong armand a great touch.”

Fischer says that Graceʼsseason of starting at WRcan only help his play at QB.

“Heʼs familiar with theroutes,” Fischer said. “Heremembers the patterns andwhich windows are openagainst which defenses.”

Dennis Gilbert, who graduatedfrom St. Joeʼs in 1984, was namedthe schoolʼs fifth head coach in 100years this past spring.

Gilbert started at QB and DB forBob OʼConnor, who retired as headcoach after the 2009 season. Heplayed three years of varsity foot-ball and was twice named All-Catholic.

“I took an unbelievable amountof knowledge from Bob,” Gilbertsaid. “I took bits and pieces from alot of different people but hecoached me and then was my bossfor 23 years. Coach OʼConnor hasan unbelievable football mind and

knows the game inside and out. Hehas an answer for anything thatmight happen during a game. Hedid some great things at that schooland he set the bar very high.”

Gilbert coached at St. Maryʼsand led the Lancers to the Msgr.Martin title game in his only seasonwith the program.

“I had an opportunity to comeback to St. Joeʼs,” Gilbert said.

Gilbert says he isnʼt nervousabout replacing his mentor at hisalma mater.

“Iʼm excited about the challenge,”he said. Mediocrity is unacceptablehere.”

Licata is back for his senior season. As a junior in 2009, Licata set

multiple records for the Billies, including records for passing yards, completions, attempts, TDs,Touchdowns in a single game,Yards in a game and the Section 6record for Passing Yards in a sea-son (2,692).

He was a final-ist for theConnolly Cup atthe end of theyear.

Amazingly,WilliamsvilleSouth coachKraig Kurzanskithinks Licata maybe even moredangerous thisseason.

“I think heʼseven better,”Kurzanski said.“Heʼs a little big-ger, his armstrength is betterand his decisionmaking is better.Heʼs a very humble young man andhe loves to play football for all theright reasons.”

Licata was being recruited by 12to 15 schools, including NotreDame, Penn State, North Carolina,Duke and Syracuse.

Licata ended the process whenhe verbally committed to theUniversity at Buffalo in the spring.

“I committed early because Iwant my senior season to be enjoy-able,” Licata said. “I was wonderingwhere to go and as soon as I com-mitted to UB it was like a weight offmy shoulders.”

Licata said that while other

schools had more name recogni-tion, UB was always his favorite.

“UB doesnʼt have the same facili-ties or a big market,” Licata said,“but Buffalo is my home and itʼswhere I want to play.”

Licata was offered a scholarshipby former coach Turner Gill but newcoach Jeff Quinn honored the offer.

“I like coach Quinn a lot,” Licatasaid. “A lot ofcoaches tell youone thing butdonʼt mean it.Coach Quinn ishonest. Hereminds me ofcoach Kurzanski. An old-schoolguy with a win-ning attitude.”

Also this pastoff-season,Licata helped theBillies win aSection 6 title inbasketball andlost a Section 6title game inbaseball.

Despite thesuccess in other sports, Licata saysthe Billiesʼ first-round playoff loss toGrand Island has stuck with him foralmost nine months.

“I remember that the GrandIsland kid kicked a 42-yard fieldgoal with :07 left to beat us,” hesaid. “He made a heck of a kick, inthe rain, in the mud. But that loss isstill with us.”

Licata says that he has thoughtof the loss to Grand Island oftenover the summer.

“I think it will give us a little firefor the season,” he said. “We wantanother chance at winning thechampionship.”

A New FrontierBy Mark Adair

After winning four NYState championships forthe second straight year,Western New York footballhas emphatically staked aclaim as having the bestfootball in the state.

The local Division I-Ateam, the University atBuffalo, has alreadyreceived verbal committ-ments from two local play-ers. Williamsvile Southquarterback Joe Licataand Depew lineman JohnKling will play for the Bullsin 2011.

And yet, the biggeststory of the season wasalready announced inApril.

After 107 years, theHarvard Cup Leagueannounced that the City ofBuffalo teams would dis-band the ancient leagueand join the Section 6Federation.

Riverside coach TonyTruilizio says that he isexcited about the newjourney.

“Weʼre losing a leaguewith an awful lot of history,”Truilizio said, “but this is amove in the right direction.”

This momentus shiftmay affect Truilizio morethan any other coach in Western New York.

His Riverside teams have won three Harvard Cups duringthe last five years. He was a member of the Lafayette teamthat lost the Harvard Cup game in 1983.

“My passion for the Harvard Cup goes so deep that I gota tattoo of the Harvard Cup on my arm,” he said. “I believe inthe City League and we certainly have some tremendous tra-dition with our league.”

But...“But if talk to the players who have played in the Harvard

Cup,” he said, “almost every one of them wanted the oppor-tunity to play against the suburban schools and see how wellthey measured up. Almost every player wanted to see if they

were the best.”Until the early 1990s,

there was no opportunityto play more than 10games against local com-petition. The advent of theNew York State playoffschanged all that.

“The fact is, there is anew opportunity fortodayʼs players,” he said.“They can get a lot moreexposure if they can playin the state tournament orin the Carrier Dome.”

Truilizio feels that hisplayers have alwayslagged the rest of Section6 when it came to publici-ty and exposure.

“The only exposure wegot is on ThanksgivingDay in November,” hesaid.

Truilizio also says hehas no regrets about leav-ing the tradition of theHarvard Cup League.

“I have no sadnesswhatsoever,” he said. “Iʼmglad were are making themove and I canʼt wait untilour first game. The timeschanged and we neededto change too.”

Truilizio says that heunderstands that noteveryone is pleased with

the move.“Old-time coaches and players are bittersweet about it,”

he said. “The Harvard Cup was the oldest high school cham-pionship game in the country. Letʼs face it, thatʼs awful hardto give up. But there is more out there now. There is moreout there for the kids.”

Burgard coach Jason Kolb has seen, first-hand, the effectof playing only for a local championship.

San Diego Chargers lineman Andre Coleman was astandout for Burgard in 2001.

“Coming out of high school, Andre was completely over-looked,” Kolb said. “He went to the University of Albany and

Riverside coach Tony Truilizio is excited aboutstarting play in the Section 6 Federation. TheHarvard Cup disbanded after 107 years.

was an absolute stud. Now heʼs in the NFL. He could havegone somewhere big but nobody knew about him.”

Kolb is also somewhat relieved to have the Buffalo CitySchools enter divisions with schools of similar size. Burgardplayed in the Harvard Cup game three times in the past fiveyears and lost all three title games to bigger schools.

“Itʼs difficult,” Kolb said. “We had great teams but ourleague didnʼt always favor a small school.”

Burgard will play in Class B this coming fall.“Last year we would have been a C team,” he said.

“Thatʼs tough when you have to play a championship gameagainst an AA team.”

Kolb wishes this move had been made years ago. Hegrew up in the suburbs, playing at Maryvale High School inCheektowaga. He says he dreamed of playing in RalphWilson Stadium like every other suburban high school play-er.

“Iʼve been waiting for this for eight years,” Kolb said. “Theday Dr. Williams was hired I was hoping for this. Dr. Williamswanted this for all of us and, all of a sudden, it happened.”

Kolb says that every player on his roster is excited aboutthe coming season.

“Our kids have good talent and they can compete,” hesaid. “The kids absolutely love this. A number of our teamsjoined passing leagues over the summer so they could raisetheir level of play a bit before we start the season.”

While the transition may not have been feasible untilrecently, Truilizio says that the Harvard Cup teams are notas far behind as they were a decade ago.

“We used to be way behind in facilities, equipment, uni-forms,” he said. “We didnʼt have JV teams. Ten years ago, Idonʼt think we could have competed with the suburbanschools.”

Thatʼs no longer the case.“We started the JV teams when Dr. Williams came in six

years ago,” Truilizio said. “Dr. Williams and Athletic DirectorDave Thomas got the funding to build the new stadiums.Weʼre not behind anymore.”

The Buffalo School District now boasts of completely re-furbished All-High Stadium and brand new Johnnie B. WileyStadium. Riverside Stadium underwent a $5 million renova-tion and is ready for the start of the season. All three facilitieshave Field Turf surfaces and lights.

More is on the way. Weight lifting equipment was installedin several schools. Assistant coaches are being added to thecoaching staffs.

The only thing left is to find out where they stand in com-parison to the rest of the state.

“Our kids are really excited,” Truilizio said. “They want toknow what their talent is. In their history, they have neverplayed a regular-season game outside of Buffalo. I think thefirst time they get on a bus to go to a road game, it will reallystart to sink in.”

Truilizio says that he canʼt wait either... and that he, too,is wondering how good his program is.

“I think there will be a 3-year learning curve for ourteams,” Truilizio said. “I think it will take three seasons todetermine if Harvard Cup football is what coaches believe itshould be.”

It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;

who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,

so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.

Longtime Section 6 Chairman Chuck Funke died onThursday after a three-month battle with cancer.

To say that Section 6 football lost a giant would be anunderstatement.

For Iroquois coach Frank Payne, Funkeʼs death hithard. In 1992, Payne was an assistant coach in theIroquois program and hoping to land a teaching jobsomewhere... anywhere.

“There was a teaching posi-tion open at Iroquois and Iapplied,” Payne said. “I had myPhys Ed certification but I didnʼtthink I would get the job.”

At that time, teaching jobswere difficult to find.

“I had subbed for three yearsand I was getting discouraged,”Payne said. “If I didnʼt get thisone I was going to go down toFlorida to look for job.”

Funke was the Principal atIroquois Middle School and wasalso the Physical EducationChairman for the district so heconducted Payneʼs interview.

“When I got home the phonewas ringing,” Payne said. “Itwas Chuck. He told me he wasvery happy to have a footballguy hired at Iroquois. Thatphone call changed my life.”

Payne never did go to Florida.“I met my wife at Iroquois, got two beautiful kids and a

job I love because of him,” Payne said.Payne interviewed for the head varsity job in 2000.“When I got the head job, it was unbelievable,” Payne

said. “One of my goals was to be like Chuck Funke. Tohave a passion for the game and the knowledge and skillto handle the job. He was a great administrator. He wasgenuine person. He was honest. His passion for footballand kids was unparalleled.”

Payne says that Funke did more for Section 6 footballthan anyone.

“Heʼs THE reason Section 6 football is where itʼs at,”Payne said. “He got the games at Ralph Wilson Stadium. He got the Billsʼ to host the combine. He got the Bills to

host the passing league. That was all Chuck.”Funke also had the foresight to start the bowl system...

a move that wasnʼt exactly popular at the time.“A lot of people balked at it,” Payne said. “Coaches,

parents and players didnʼt want to play the extra games. He established the bowls and he got all kinds of flack forit. People called it the ʻToilet Bowl.ʼ Some teams evenskipped the games.”

Payne says that Funke saw an enormous benefit fromthe Bowl Games.

“If you play two extra games, thatʼs 10 extra practicesfor the kids,” Payne said. “Itʼs not just varsity kids but itʼsfor the JV kids, too. Thatʼs 30 extra practices by the timea kid is a senior.”

Playing bowl games paid an immediate dividend forPayne and Iroquois.

“Iroquois had won only 19games all through the 1990s,”Payne said. “My first year ashead coach we went 7-3 andwon the A Bowl. That was ahuge thing for our program. Thenext year we went to theStadium.”

But Funkeʼs push for theextra games wasnʼt just aboutmaking football better...although that was a part of it.

“He saw it as an opportunityfor kids to play more football,”Payne said. “He just couldnʼtbelieve that there were coacheswho would opt out of a chancefor kids to play more football.”

The results of Funkeʼs per-sistence have been seen in theCarrier Dome the past two sea-sons.

“He stood strong on it,”Payne said. “Despite a lot of

people criticizing him, he stood strong. The result is eightstate championships in the last 2 years.”

Itʼs strangely fitting that Funke died on the day beforethe season opened.

“He wasnʼt going to wait until the middle of the seasonand distract everyone,” Payne said. “That just wasnʼtChuck. It was never about him.”

Reportedly, Section 6 has ordered stickers with the ini-tials “CJF” on them. Every team in Section 6 will wear thestickers on their helmets as a tribute to Funke.

“Every team,” Payne said. “Not just Iroquois but everyteam.”

Every team... an honor that may never be repeated.“He deserves that,” Payne said, “because his stamp is

on Western New York football forever.”
