WHERE TO USE
Use for heavy duty dc industrial applica-tions such as steel mills, cranes, materialhandling, rapid transit as well as general-duty machine tool, textile machinery andsimilar applications. Contactors have a steelbase insulated from the electrical circuits. They can be mounted on either metal orinsulating panels.
NEMA Size 1-5 are available in variousNO and NC pole combinations. Sizes 6-10available in NO pole only.
Advanced design arc chutes (non-asbes-tos) provide make or interrupt ratings of upto ten times the contactor ratings for 600-volt applications and four times the contac-tor ratings for 1000-volt applications. Thearc is completely extinguished within thearc chute structure.
Select-contactor ratings on the basis ofboth dc current-carrying capacity and blow-out ratings. The blowout rating establishesthe contactor current rating and interrupt-ing rating. Larger contactors are used be-cause the increased tip gap provides im-proved interruption on the lower currentapplication.
The function of the blowout coil is tomove the arc upward at the same time thecontacts are opening, thus forcing the arcaway from the tips and into the arc chute ata faster rate.
For no-load operation choose contactorsfrom Step 1 page 5-3. Earlier designs for thisapplication did not contain arc chute orblow-out coil. Contactors listed contain arcchute and blow-out coils and will operateunder these same conditions.
For motor and resistive loads choose con-tactors with the required dc current-carry-ing capacity as given in the application tableon page 5-6.For resistive and motor loads through1000-volt motor applications, specify unitswith maximum blowout ratings listed foreach size from Step 1 tables. For moderately inductive loads, such asmotor fields with discharge resistors, selectcontactors with blowout ratings two to threetimes rated full-load dc current. The dis-charge resistor can be permanently con-nected in parallel with the load or can beconnected across the load with a normallyclosed pole. A contactor with NO and NCpole can be used. The normally open polewill disconnect power. The discharge resis-tor should not exceed four times the loadresistance for 250 volts or two times the loadresistance for 600 volts. For motor and resistive loads, contactorswill interrupt ten times blowout rating at600 volts and four times blowout rating at1000 volts, maximum. See application table, page 5-6.For highly inductive loads, such as brakecoils without discharge resistors, use twopoles in series for opening both sides of theline. For highly inductive loads such asIC9528A106 brakes or equivalent magnets, choose contactors with blowout ratingsequal to load current.Normally closed pole applications. Forlisted NC devices, only 1.5 times make rat-ing can be obtained. For more severe orlarger make ratings of up to 10 times ratedcurrent, see IC2800Y105 and Y106, page5-10.
Order interlocks either factory-mounted orseparately supplied depending upon antici-pated use. If applications are known in ad-vance, factory-mounted interlocks can beordered. If flexibility in application is de-sired, order interlocks and mounting kitsseparately and mount as needed. Select volt-age range depending on application.
Mechanical interlocks—Mechanical inter-locks between two contactors allows onlyone contactor to close. See page 5-5.

Interlock contact arrangement—Inter-lock contacts can be changed by the pur-chaser from normally open to normallyclosed and vice versa, if necessary. To insureproper clearance on NO-NC forms, locate
NC contact furthest from plunger head.Time rating of normally closed contac-tors (IC2800 contactors)—coils of contac-tors with normally closed poles are for in-termittent duty only. The coils can be
energized 30 percent of the time but nomore than 10 minutes continuously or 20minutes continuously if only once out ofthree hours time. For continuous operationrefer to company.

WHERE TO USE
Use for general dc industrial control suchas machine-tool control, textile-machinerycontrol and similar applications. Contactorshave a steel base insulated from the electri-cal circuits. They can be mounted on eithermetal or insulating panels.
The 25 and 50 amp NO contactors aboveare to be used where exact replacement ofthe obsolete line of contactors is required. The contactor uses a non-asbestos arc chuteand will provide make/interrupt ratings of 4times the 8-hour rating of the NO pole. Noother pole configurations are available. SeeDS303, page 5-2.
WHERE TO USE
Use for crane, metal-rolling mill and allother heavy industry dc control. Contactorsare available mounted or unmounted in ei-ther front- or back-connected forms. Useunit-mounted, front-connected form formounting on metal or insulating panels.Use unmounted back-connected form forassembly directly on your own insulatingpanel.
Select sizes according to motor horse-power and time rating. Use forms with blow-out rating for dc power interruption.
Time rating of normally closed contac-tors—Coils of contactors with normallyclosed poles are for intermittent duty only. The coils can be energized 30 percent of thetime but not more than 10 minutes contin-uously or 20 minutes continuously if onlyonce out of three hours time. For continu-ous operation refer to company.
HOW TO ORDER

WHERE TO USE
For use in 1000-volt dc circuits such as arefound in oil well drilling, material handling, crane control, uninterruptible power sup-plies, and transportation equipment. Thesecontactors are used in equipments where itis desired to reduce current ratings by goingto higher voltages. These contactors are spe-cially designed for applications with lowmake and interrupting requirements, with-out jogging.
Select contactors ratings on basis of dccurrent carrying capacities and interlock re-quirements.
Overcurrent power circuit. A special form(C300C) is available with an overcurrentpower circuit to prevent the contactor fromopening under a heavy overload current inexcess of the designed interruption rating.
Manual Latch. The C300E form utilizes amanual operator to close and latch thepower contacts if control power is not avail-able to operate the coil. This will eliminatethe need for the addition of a knife switchwhere applicable codes or standards requiremanual operation in the event of loss ofcontrol power or coil failure.

WHERE TO USE
Normally OpenIC2800B310 contactors are used where
time-delay opening of power circuits such asdc motor loads and resistor loads are re-quired. They are normally open, single-polecontactors constructed with copper-jack-eted coils which provide time delay on drop-out. The contactors are front-connectedand can be mounted on either insulating ornoninsulating panels.
Normally ClosedUsed to short-out resistance steps in start-
ing dc motors. Contactors are normallyclosed, without blowouts, and are not de-signed to interrupt power.
Pick-up is instantaneous. Time-delaydropout results from use of a copper-jack-eted coil and adjustment of this time delay isobtained by using a non-magnetic armatureshim. Time delay of IC2800A501 contactorscan be adjusted over a narrow range by thearmature spring. Time delay of IC2800Y109contactor can be adjusted over a wide rangeby a sliding shim.
Mount contactors on either metal or in-sulating panels. Make connections from thefront.Enclosed rating—0.9 times the 8-hour,open-ampere rating of the contactor.

The synchronous-motor field contactor isavailable in ratings, from 100 to 265 amps. The field contactor has two normally openpoles for applying and removing field exci-tation and one normally closed pole for in-serting resistance in the field for discharge.
These extremely fast-acting contactors aredesigned specifically for synchronous-motorapplications. The normally open and closedpoles have the correct amount of overlap toassure against the build-up of high inducedvoltages in the motor field when excitationis removed.
The field contactors are of the heavy-duty,clapper-type design for industrial use. Thecontactors have proved in the field that theygive long life under all conditions of oper-ation and service. The correct amount ofwipe keeps the contact tips clean which pro-vides positive electrical contact when thepoles are closed. Blowout coils are con-nected to each pole to quickly extinguishthe arc within the arc chute. Arc chutes arenon-asbestos and can easily be removed toinspect contact tips.
HOW TO ORDERB107, B207

DESCRIPTION
The IC2812 field controllers are for theapplication and removal of dc power froman exciter or generator field circuit. Thecontroller consists of two Normally Open(NO) power circuits and one NormallyClosed (NC) power circuit and associatedcontrol and protective relaying. The 2 NOcontacts apply dc power to the machinefield. The NC contact inserts a resistor inthe field circuit to discharge the energywhen the field power circuit is opened. Thecontacts are arranged in a make-beforebreak configuration. The contactor is me-chanically latched when closed, and can beelectrically or mechanically tripped.
APPLICATION
Determine the Amperes of the Field atFull Load (AFFL) rating. This AFFL ratingshould be on the nameplate of the machine(exciter or generator) on which the fieldbreaker is to be used. This AFFL rating de-termines which contator is applicable.
CONSTRUCTION
The controller is a non-drawout type, witha padlock feature to lock the contactor inthe open position. The 900 amp and 2500amp controllers are incorporated into anangle iron frame assembly with front coverwhich is designed for mounting inside acubicle. The 265 amp assembly is based
mounted. These controllers include auxil-iary relays for remote functions, an anti-pump circuit and close and trip push-but-tons mounted on the front cover.
The anti-pump circuit ensures that thecontactor operates only once during theclose operation. A total of 11 auxiliary cir-cuits are available for interlocking. All de-vices are wired to a common terminalboard.

WHERE TO USE
Use for general-purpose relaying, under-voltage protection, plugging, and similar ap-plications. Relays are available with eithershunt or series coils. They can be mountedon either steel or insulating panels.
Choose general-duty relays for normalservice or where space is limited. Selectheavy-duty relays for severe service or whenmore than four circuits are required.Latched-in relays are used for overvoltage orovercurrent protection. Note that relays forcontrol of circuits 48 volts and below havecontacts designed especially for this voltage.
Complete relays are recommended whenapplications are known in advance. Build-ing-block units are recommended when ap-plications vary in number of circuits andcontact arrangements.
Contacts can be changed from normallyopen to normally closed and vice versa, ex-cept that general-duty relays should not ex-ceed two normally closed contacts. To as-sure proper clearance on NO-NCcombination, locate NC contact on bottom.

WHERE TO USE
Timing relays are used for motor acceler-ation, sequence interlocking, and other ap-plications requiring delayed opening orclosing of control circuits. Relays operate on
the flux-decay principle—dropout being de-layed by slowing the rate of flux decay. Non-magnetic armature shims of different thick-ness provide differing lengths of time delay. Some final adjustment can be made by vary-ing tension of the armature spring.
Choose IC2820A100A relays for two cir-cuits and minimum mounting space.Choose IC2820A100B relays for either twoor four circuits and added time delay perthe following table.
Choose between completely assembledrelays and building-block units on the basisof purchasing perference. If applicationscan be predicted, completely assembled re-lays may be desired. If applications vary innumber of circuits and arrangement, build-ing-block forms may be more economicaland practical.
HOW TO ORDER

WHERE TO USE
Use to protect dc shunt or compound-wound motors against loss of field excita-tion. The coil of the relay is connected inseries with the motor field. When excitationis lost, the relay drops out and opens themotor line contactor.
Select relay so that continuous rating willnot be exceeded by the rated field currentand the relay calibration range permits
pick-up to be set below minimum field cur-rent. Relay will not protect against over-speed due to weak field unless the fieldcurrent decreases below the relay dropoutsetting.

DESCRIPTION
GROUND-FAULT RELAY
The IC2820A102 is a fast-acting hand-re-set relay designed to interrupt controlpower of a line contactor on sensing aground current in the lines to an ac motorload or other ac equipment. If a groundfault can be removed within a few cycles ofits initiation, damage to a motor or other acequipment can be minimized. For example,on a large induction or synchronous motorwhen an insulation failure occurs toground, the fault current will be removedbefore damage is done to the laminations, thus making it possible to repair the motorat a minimum of expense and downtime.
As shown in the elementary diagram, therelay is designed for use with a window-typecurrent transformer* where the three loadleads (for a 3-phase system) are placedthrough the window. When a ground faultoccurs, the vector sum of the currents in theload cables will not equal zero and this sumwill cause a current in the secondary of thecurrent transformer that will energize therelay coil. This current will actuate the relayto ‘‘TRIP’’, opening the normally closedcontacts, and closing the normally open
contacts shorting out the rectifier and coil. The trip lever holds the relay in this positionuntil the lever is moved in a counterclock-wise direction to the ‘‘RESET’’ position. The photo shows the reset lever in the‘‘TRIP’’ position and also the rectifier andresistor mounted on the relay.DIFFERENTIAL RELAY
The IC2820A102A differential relay de-tects any difference in current going in andout of each phase of a wye-connected mo-tor. The current difference will trip the dif-ferential relay and shut down the motor byopening the motor-line contactor.
As shown in the elementary diagram (Fig.50), separate relays and window-type cur-rent transformers* are connected in eachphase of the motor.
*The IC2820A102 ground-fault and differential relay isspecifically designed to be used with GE transformertypes JCS-0 (50:5, 100:5), JAH-0 (300:5, 400:5) and JCH-0(300:5) (Transformer must be ordered separately.) DONOT apply with other transformers.

DESCRIPTION
The IC2820C100L (FR) field-applying re-lay working in conjunction with auxiliaryrelay IC2820C100B (FRX) provides time de-lay for closing the field contactor when theproper dc voltage is available to pull themachine into step. Sliding bi-metal shims,by which the air gap may be changed, pro-vides for adjustment of the time dropout.
The relay is designed for mounting onsteel or insulated bases and uses the IC2956universal interlock for its contacts.
