Section 2: Landforms created by coastal erosion and deposition
E Tips: Use evidence from the photo. Remember describe NOT explain. Say in detail what you can see!
1) Study Figure 1, a photograph of part of the UK coastline. Describe the landforms shown in Figure 17. (3 marks)
2) Key phrases in the formation of headlands and bays are given below. Using the key phrases, write a short paragraph to explain the formation of headlands and bays. (4 marks)
land juts out into sea

E Tips: Six figure grid references are tricky. Remember along the corridor, then up the stairs. Find the square first eg 415128 – the main square is 4112. Then think about 5 baby squares along and 8 baby squares up. Look at the scale and measure very carefully for 2 marks.
2) Explain the formation of headlands and bays. (4 marks)
3) Study Figure 2 on the next page, a 1:50 000 Ordnance Survey map extract of the area around Spurn Head in East Yorkshire. a) Name the feature at 415128. (1 mark)
.............................................................
b) Measure the distance along the spit from X (421150) to Y (397105). 2 marks
......................................... km
4) Use Figure 2 to draw a labelled sketch map in the grid on the next page
to show the features of the spit. (4 marks)
E Tip: 2 marks for shape – get the position of the start and end of the spit in the right place, and
get the curve the same.
2 marks for labels – the labels MUST be physical labels and the arrow must point to exactly the
right place.

5) Explain the formation of a spit. 4 marks
6) Outline how a bar is different from a spit. 2 marks
E Tips: Make sure you get your ideas in the correct order. Think about what should go first. Start
with prevailing wind direction causing longshore drift.
