Lubricating Oil System - General Information

WARNING Some state and federal agencies in the United Statesof America have determined that used engine oil canbe carcinogenic and can cause reproductive toxicity.Avoid inhalation of vapors, ingestion, and prolongedcontact with used engine oil.

WARNING Avoid direct contact of hot oil with your skin. Hot oilcan cause personal injury.

CDC recommends the use of a high quality SAE 15W-40heavy duty engine oil which meets the American Petro-leum Institute (API) performance classification CE/SG.

APi grade CG-4/CF-4 engine oils can be used in areaswhere CE oil is not yet available, but the lubricating oilchange interval must be reduced to 1/2 of the interval giv-en in the maintenance schedule.

CAUTION Limited use of low viscosity lubricating oils, such as10W-30, can aid in starting the engine and providingsufficient lubricating oil flow at ambient temperaturesbelow -5°C [23°F]. However, the continuous use of lowviscosity lubricating oils can decrease engine life. Re-fer to the accompanying chart.

Diagnosing Lubricating System Malfunctions

When diagnosing lubrication system malfunctions, checkall obvious items related to oil pressure, such as gauges;high and low oil level; excessive oil contamination; and oilviscosity.

High Lubricating Oil Pressure

High oil pressure usually occurs after the engine is firststarted in cold weather. Cold start oil pressure typicallywill be approximately 827 to 1034 kPa [120 to 150 psi]. Ifthe pressure regulator plunger is operating properly, thenthe oil pressure should drop back to approximately 449kPa [65 psi] when normal operating temperature isreached.

Lubricating Oil Pressure Regulating Valve

The engine will have high oil pressure at the normal oper-ating temperature if the regulator sticks in the closed po-sition. Check the regulator for freedom of movement.Refer to Procedure 007-029.

Low Lubricating Oil Pressure

Low lubricating oil pressure (or no oil pressure) can becaused by several lubrication system related malfunc-tions. To begin the investigation, determine the engine op-erating conditions when the low pressure was firstobserved; for example, following a service interval, at idleonly, while operating on a steep grade.

Lubricating Oil Level

High oil level can cause low oil pressure. If the oil level ishigh enough for the connecting rods to dip into during op-eration, the oil can become aerated. This will result in lowoil pressure and high engine temperature.

Page 7: Section 10 Chapter 14 · 24 Valve, 8.3 Liter Engine Lubricating Oil System - General Information Lubricating Oil System Page 3 7-89430NH Section 10 Chapter 14 Issued 8-2001 Low lubricating

24 Valve, 8.3 Liter Engine Lubricating Oil System - General InformationLubricating Oil System Page 3

7-89430NH Section 10 Chapter 14 Issued 8-2001

Low lubricating oil level will not normally appear as low oilpressure. Typically, it will appear as an intermittent loss ofoil pressure when rounding a corner or operating on asteep grade. This condition exists when the oil level is ex-tremely low and the suction tube can not pick up oil duringall modes of operation.

Lubricating Oil Filter

A plugged filter will cause a gradual loss of oil pressure byapproximately 69 kPa [10 psi]. The pressure will return tonormal when the filter bypass valve opens. If not correct-ed, this will result in severe engine wear, as the engine isrunning on unfiltered oil when the bypass valve is open.

Lubricating Oil Gauge

Check the lubricating oil gauge and sending unit to makesure they are operating correctly by verifying the pressurewith a manual gauge.

Lubricating Oil Suction Tube

A loose suction tube, damaged gasket, or crack in the suc-tion tube can cause a temporary loss of prime for the oilpump. The engine will have low pressure or no oil pres-sure at starting, followed by normal oil pressure.

Bearings and Lubricating Oil Pump

A steady decrease in oil pressure over a long period oftime can be an indication of worn bearings or excessive oilpump wear.

Lubricating Oil Dilution

CAUTION Diluted oil can cause severe engine damage.

Check the condition of the lubricating oil.

• Thin, black lubricating oil is an indication of fuel in the oil.

• Milky discoloration is an indication of coolant in the lubricating oil.

Coolant in the oil can be caused by:

• Expansion plugs that are leaking• Lubricating oil cooler element that is leaking• Damaged cylinder head or gasket• Cracked engine block • Casting porosity.

Coolant Diluted Lubricating Oil

Since the lubricating oil cooler design does not requiregaskets or seals to maintain the separation of oil and cool-ant, the element itself must leak to allow mixing of the flu-ids. Refer to Procedure 007-003.

Page 9: Section 10 Chapter 14 · 24 Valve, 8.3 Liter Engine Lubricating Oil System - General Information Lubricating Oil System Page 3 7-89430NH Section 10 Chapter 14 Issued 8-2001 Low lubricating

7-89430NH Section 10 Chapter 14 Issued 8-2001

During operation, the lubricating oil pressure will be higherthan coolant pressure. A leak in the lubricating oil coolerwill appear as lubricating oil in the coolant.

However, following an engine shutdown, the residualpressure in the coolant system can cause coolant to seepthrough the leak path into the lubricating oil.

To check for leaks, pressurize the cooling system to 140kPa [20 psi]. With the system pressurized, remove the fol-lowing components and inspect for leaks:

• Valve covers (leaks indicate cracked head).• Lubricating oil drain plug (leaks indicate defective

lubricating oil cooler, head gasket, cracked head, or block).

Coolant in the lubricating oil can be caused by a damagedcylinder head gasket or cracked cylinder head or block.

Remove the cylinder head and gasket, and inspect forcracks or damage. Refer to Procedure 002-004.

Fuel Diluted Lubricating Oil

Use the following logic to determine the source of the oildilution with fuel.

Fuel dilution is limited to three sources:

• Injection pump cam housing• Fuel leaking by the rings• Injector leakage.

A cracked cam housing can cause fuel to leak into thegear housing and then into the lubrication oil pan.

Page 10: Section 10 Chapter 14 · 24 Valve, 8.3 Liter Engine Lubricating Oil System - General Information Lubricating Oil System Page 3 7-89430NH Section 10 Chapter 14 Issued 8-2001 Low lubricating

Incomplete combustion in the cylinders can result in un-burned fuel draining into the oil pan.

This condition can be caused by a leaking injector or re-duced compression caused by inadequate piston ringsealing.

An increase in white exhaust smoke during the first startof the day is a symptom that an injector is leaking.

An injector leak will also cause the engine to run roughand have low power.Remove, repair, or replace leaking injectors. Refer to Pro-cedure 006-026, for test and repair instructions.

Lubricating Oil Leaks

Various gaskets, seals, and plugs are used to contain thelubricating oil. Most leaks can be identified during routineinspection of the engine and vehicle.

A blown expansion plug can allow a relatively large quan-tity of lubricating oil to escape, resulting in a sudden dropin the lubricating oil pressure.

When checking for such a leak, be sure to check all ex-pansion plugs that may be obscured by chassis parts.

Lubricating oil blowing out of the breather is a sign of ablown expansion plug.

Page 11: Section 10 Chapter 14 · 24 Valve, 8.3 Liter Engine Lubricating Oil System - General Information Lubricating Oil System Page 3 7-89430NH Section 10 Chapter 14 Issued 8-2001 Low lubricating

If the lubricating oil cooler element ruptures, the lubricat-ing oil pressure may force lubricating oil into the coolingsystem. Lubricating oil in the coolant should be visiblewhen the radiator cap is removed. Refer to Procedure007-003.

Worn or damaged seals in the turbocharger can also allowlubricating oil to leak into the air crossover pipe and beburned in the engine.

The condition can be verified by removing the air cross-over tube or charge air cooler tubing and looking for oil.

Inadequate sealing of the piston rings will result in lubri-cating oil being blown out the breather tube and/or con-sumed by the engine. Refer to Procedure 014-002.

Lubricating oil can also be lost through a worn or malfunc-tioning air compressor. Look for carbon build-up in the airline from the compressor to the air tank. Also, a failed aircompressor head or head gasket can allow oil to leak intothe coolant, or coolant to leak into the oil, during hot shut-down.
