Section 1: The Old Brain

Fill it with knowledge

Giff.

1. The left hemisphere of the brain controls the opposite side of the body and vice versa.

2. Humans only use 10% of their brain.

3. Regions of the brain can change or adapt their functions.

Page 3: Section 1 The Brain

4. If you cut the connective tissue that bonds left and right hemispheres together, people can live a normal life.

5. People can live a normal life after removing half of their brain.

Page 4: Section 1 The Brain

6. The brain is a pig consuming 20% of the air and calories we take in.

7. Your brain thinks more during the day than at night.

Page 5: Section 1 The Brain

8. Although the brain controls the sense of pain, it can not feel it itself.

9. The brain contains 50,000 miles of blood vessels inside it.

The brain’s oldest ancestor is the brainstem.

The brainstem controls your most primitive and automatic survival functions like sleep and body temp.

Think of it as the power cord or if you are really creative, the stem part of

the broccoli.

I taste better than

brainstem.

Page 16: Section 1 The Brain

The base of the brainstem where it enters the brain itself is the medulla.

Medulla is the auto-pilot for heartbeat and breathing.

What would happen if Gifford was a doctor or mad scientist and…

Detached the cats upper brain from the

medulla and brainstem?

Page 20: Section 1 The Brain

Sitting on top of the Brainstem is the Thalamus.

The receiving center for your senses.

Information comes in from your senses and the thalamus directs the information to the other brain regions.

Our last section of the old brain region is the Cerebellum.

The “little brain” coordinates movement, balance and learned physical skills.
