JANKA HARDNESS RATINGS AND FLOORINGROUP WOOD

An important factor in selecting a hardwood flooring is the comparative hardness ofwood species. A widely recognized test to determine the hardness of wood is theJanka Hardness Test. Test results give the pounds of force required to drive a smallsteel ball (0.444 inches) into a piece of wood to a depth equal to half the diameter ofthe ball itself. This test was developed as a variation on a standardized test methodfor determining the strength of metals, called the Brinell test.

The grain of wood is an important factor in the test process. Testing is generallydone on the surface of a cut plank, with the small ball hitting against (perpendicularto) the grain. (Think of shooting an arrow into a tree.) This gives a measurement ofthe “side hardness” of the wood. Side hardness is useful in determining thesuitability of any species for use as flooring, as floor planks are cut with the grain ofthe wood. The harder the wood, the more pounds of force required to embed thelittle ball into the surface of the wood, and therefore the higher the Janka ratingnumber. When comparing Janka Hardness Ratings, a higher number indicates aharder wood. A harder wood is better able to withstand denting and wear. (It willalso be more difficult to saw and nail.)

Red Oak is often used as a benchmark in comparing Janka ratings, as Red Oak is apopular and widely selected wood for flooring that performs well residentially. RedOak has a rating of 1290. An application involving greater foot-traffic than theaverage home situation would require something more durable and a higher Jankarating would be indicated. Many of the species with the higher Janka ratings are“exotic” woods, for example Doussie at 1770, Merbau at 1925, Jatoba at 2820 andso on.

We include information for use in comparison of species. The ratings are taken fromthe U.S. Dept. of Agriculture, Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory, Center forWood Research (www2.fpl.fs.fed.us/TechSheets/techmenu.html). Our listing showsa representative number of species in order of Janka Hardness Test Ratings, with thehardest woods at the top of our list. Species listed in green are available fromFlooringroup.com.

Installation Installer/Owner Responsibility

Beautiful hardwood floors are a product of nature and, therefore will contain natural variations in color, tone and grain. Flooringroup.com wood goes through numerous inspection stations before leaving our plant. Products are manufactured in accordance with accepted industry standards which permit a defect tolerance not to exceed 5%. The installer/owner of Flooringroup.com products has final inspection responsibility as to grade, manufacture and factory finish. Care should be taken during installation to hold out or repair particular characteristics you do not desire.

NOTE: Warranty does not cover labor for repair and replacement when a floor with visual defects has been permanently installed. It is there responsibility of the flooring contractor to inspect all floors prior to installation.

Storage and Handling

Handle and unload with care. Store in a dry place being sure to provide at least a four inch air space under cartons which are stored over "on-grade" concrete floors. Flooring shall not be delivered until the building has been "closed in" and climate controlled with windows and doors in place. All drywall, cement work, plastering, ceramic, marble and all other atmospheric moisture emitting work should be completed along with ample time allowed for curing and moisture dissipation. Care must be taken during storage, installation and occupancy, relative humidity must be maintained between 30-50% to insure stability of the material. The moisture of the material must be maintained between 7-9% to assure the material will lay flat during installation. If the relative humidity does not fall between 30-50% it is the responsibility of the installer or contractor to either add humidity to the air ( via humidifier) or reduce the humidity in the air (via de-humidifier) to maintain the relative humidity in the space where the installation is occurring.

Subfloor Before starting your installation, be sure your subfloors meet the following requirements: Concrete

Your sub-floor must be dry, clean, smooth and level to within 3/16" in a 10 ft. radius. Concrete must be dry prior to the installation of any hardwood flooring products. The moisture content of the sub-floor must be checked. Excessive moisture in the sub-floor will likely cause problems and should be corrected prior to the installation. CLEAN - It is recommended that all concrete be scoured with "3 1/2 open grit" sandpaper to remove dirt or any surface contamination such as paint, grease, oil, sealers, waxes and curing compounds. Sweep or vacuum the concrete before installation. SMOOTH AND LEVEL - Remove any high spots with a Terrazzo grinder or Carborundum stone and fill any low spots with a good quality underlayment such as a portland cement/latex underlayment. Do not use a lightweight concrete such as Gypcrete®. Concrete must be at least 60 days old prior to commencement of the installation on any wood products. Bostik MVP Moisture Vapor Protection- The above conditions being met, the sub-floor must be coated with EP-33 Moisture Shield or Bostik MVP Moisture Vapor Protection system as per manufacturer’s recommendations. All concrete shall be tested for moisture by either one of the following procedures:

1) Calcium chloride test per ASTM F1869 with a minimum of one test per 1,000 sf, moisture shall not exceed 3lbs\1,000sf

2) RH (Relative Humidity test) per ASTM F2170-02 with a minimum of three tests or 1 test for every 1,000 sf , moisture shall not exceed 75%

If concrete does not meet moisture limits then application of a surface applied moisture barrier is required, such as Bostik MVP Moisture Vapor Protection system or equal as per manufacturer’s recommendations.

Adhesives:

The following adhesives are recommended: Bostik BEST, Bostik BST, Dri-Tac 7000 or equal urethane adhesives are recommended for all Flooringroup 3/8" plank or strip glue down installations. Follow adhesive label instructions and cautions.

WARNING: Do not use water based adhesives.

The use of a water based adhesive will cause problems and will void all Flooringroup warranties. Jobsite temperature should be above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Flooringroup recommends using a 3/16" V-notched trowel or as recommended by Bostik or Dri-Tac for each application. Cure time is directly affected by temperature and humidity. Higher humidity will increase the cure rate and lower humidity will decrease the cure rate.

Installing engineered wood in Adhesive

Flooring should be pulled from several cartons at one time. This will ensure and shade mixture. It is advisable to mix the planks while inspecting them for color, finish and quality prior to installation.

Avoid unattractive clustering of end joints. This can be done by always staggering the end joints a minimum of 9" from each other. Manage the installation by racking out at least 5 to 6 rows. Before spreading mastic, snap a chalk line 30" from the starting wall. This will work for your 5.5" patterns. For 2-3/4" material snap line 27" from the starting wall. NOTE: When laying alternate width always begin with the widest piece. Allow for expansion joint. Begin spreading adhesive with proper trowel. Do not spread adhesive over an area larger than you can install. Touch test before spreading adhesive. Let adhesive set up according to manufacturer's recommendations. You will want enough tack to hold board in place. Glue must flash before setting flooring, usually 30 minutes to 45 minutes. See instructions on adhesive bucket.

Leave expansion joint around perimeter of room and cut door jambs or leave a minimum of 3\8” around these jambs

Leave expansion joint around perimeter of room and cut doorjambs. Lay first row with tongue facing chalk line and work towards opposite wall. Engage the end tongue and groove and lower the flooring into position as near the side of the adjacent plank as possible. Now slide the flooring toward you to engage side tongue and groove. Be sure to keep fingers out of adhesive to proceed to the next piece. Flooringroup pre-finished boards may be lightly tapped together for a snug fit. Use a tapping block, do not strike flooring material with a hammer. If using a mallet to install pre-finished flooring, use only a mallet with a white rubber tip. After installing a section of flooring roll the flooring with 150 lb. roller (cover roller with foam to protect the flooring from being dented or scratched). This will help insure all boards have engaged the adhesive. Always roll within specified working time. After main area is complete, fill in the last row to the wall.

Cleanup

Clean glue off flooring as soon as possible.. For other adhesives, use recommended cleaner. To clean floor after completion of job, use Basic Coatings Squeaky Cleaner or Bona Kemi Hardwood Floor Cleaner.

Recommended Systems 1 thin coat of TyKote + 1-2 coats of any Basic Coatings' water-based topcoat street shoe.

Packaging U.S. Quart - U.S. Gallon packaging

Application Procedure NOTE: TyKote is recommended for recoat applications only. NOTE: Do not use over any paste wax surfaces. If unsure, always prepare a test patch to determine potential adhesion. 1. To prepare the floor for the cleaning process, remove all caked mud, chewing gum and other debris from the floor. Vacuum the dirt from the floor. Pay attention to corners. 2. Clean floor with Intensive Floor Treatment (IFT) according to cleaner instructions. Multiple cleanings may be necessary. Be sure floor is entirely free of dirt, oil, and other residue. Rinse the floor by damp mopping with a clean water until the rinse water is clean. Clean the floor again with Squeaky Cleaner according to cleaner instructions. Since Squeaky Cleaner does not leave a residue, no clear rinse is needed after this step. The two cleaners are specifically formulated to remove different types of contaminants for your floor and may not be combined into a single treatment. 3. Allow floor to dry completely before applying TyKote. Box fans may be used to speed up the drying process. 4. Shake TyKote gently before use. Apply a small amount of TyKote to an area of the floor and use a new sponge mop to spread it out to a thin, uniform layer. For large floors, pour Tykote into a clean, dry mop bucket. Soak a new, lint-free rayon mop in Tykote and wring out. Work around the floor until all areas have been coated. Be sure that every area of the floor intended for recoat is coated with Tykote. Any missed spots may result in poor adhesion to topcoat. The floor should have a wet

appearance but there should be no puddles or areas that appear wet. 5. Allow to dry approximately one hour with good ventilation and air movement across the floor. If there are areas where the Tykote has puddles and has not dried, wipe the area with a clean, water-dampened rag. Do not exceed six hours before applying the topcoat or TyKote may lose effectiveness. If the six-hour window is surpassed, tack the floor with Squeaky Cleaner to remove any airborne dust before applying Tykote. 6. Apply the Basic Coatings' Street Shoe or your choice of topcoat according to label instructions. Refer to the Brochure "Basic Coatings TyKote System" for complete application instructions prior to using the system.
