Indian Steel Industry in April-March 2016-17: A Performance Summary

The following is a status report on the performance of Indian steel industry during April-March 2016-17,based on provisional data released by JPC. It is to be noted that total finished steel includes both non-alloy and alloy (including stainless steel) and all comparisons are made with regard to same period oflast year.

I. Crude Steel:

• During April-March 2016-17, crude steel production was 97.385 million tonnes (mt), a growth of8.5% over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 55.064 mt during April-March 2016-17, which was a growth of 16% compared to same period of last year.

• The rest i.e. 42.321 mt came from the Other Producers, which was a decline of 0.1% comparedto same period of last year.

• Overall crude steel production in March 2017 (8.274 mt) was down by 0.5% over March 2016but was up by 2% over February 2017.

II. Hot Metal:

• During April-March 2016-17, hot metal production was 64.546 million tonnes (mt), a growth of10% over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 53.064 mt during April-March 2016-17, which was a growth of 12.5% compared to same period of last year.

• The rest i.e. 11.482 mt came from the Other Producers, which was down by 0.6% over sameperiod of last year.

• Overall hot metal production in March 2017 (5.68 mt) was up by 5% over March 2016 and grewby 8.8% over February 2017.

III. Pig Iron:

• During April-March 2016-17, pig iron production for sale was 9.452 million tonnes (mt), agrowth of 2.4% over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 0.913 mt during April-March 2016-17,which was a decline of 29% compared to same period of last year.

• The rest came from the Other Producers, which was a growth of 1.8% compared to sameperiod of last year.

• Overall pig iron production for sale in March 2017 (0.831 mt) was up by 12.3% over March2016 and was up by 8.3% over February 2017.

IV. Total Finished Steel:A. Production for sale

• Production for sale of total finished steel at 101.274 mt, registered a growth of 11.3% duringApril-March 2016-17 over same period of last year.

• SAIL, RINL, TSL, Essar, JSWL & JSPL together produced 57.521 mt during April-March 2016-17, which was a growth of 18.5% compared to same period of last year while production for theOther Producers was down by 1.2%.

• Overall finished steel production for sale in March 2017 (9.755 mt) was up by 17.4% overMarch 2016 and grew by 14.6% over February 2017.

B. Exports

• Export of total finished steel was up by 102.1% in April-March 2016-17 (8.244 mt) over sameperiod of last year.

• Exports in March 2017 (1.621 mt) was up by 363% over March 2016 and grew by 114% overFebruary 2017.

C. Imports

• Import of total finished steel at 7.427 mt in April-March 2016-17 declined by 36.6% over sameperiod of last year.

• Imports in March 2017 (0.8 mt) was down by 19.7% over March 2016 but was up by 51.8%over February 2017.

• Given such trends in export-import, India emerged as a net exporter of total finishedsteel during March 2017 as well as April-March 2016-17.

D. Consumption

• India’s consumption of total finished steel saw a growth of 3% in April-March 2016-17 (83.93mt) over same period of last year.

• Consumption in March 2017 (7.989 mt) was up by 2.2% over March 2016 and was up by13.4% over February 2017.
