Our Passion For New Musicals

The development and production of new musicals (like the world premiere production you are about to see) is a

central part of The 5th Avenue Theatrersquos mission Over the past 12 years we have produced 15 new musicals mdash The Prince and The Pauper (2001) Hairspray (2002) Yankee Doodle Dandy (2004) Princesses (2005) The Wedding Singer (2006) Lone Star Love (2007) Shrek (2008) Memphis (2009) Catch Me If You Can (2009) A Christmas Story The Musical (2010) Vanities (2011) Disneyrsquos Aladdin (2011) Saving Aimee (aka Scandalous 2011) First Date (2012) and Secondhand Lions (2013)

I am very happy to tell you that eight of those 15 new musicals have gone from our stage to Broadway garnering a total of 14 Tony Awards including two for Best Musical This is an incredible track record of which we are very proud We are even prouder of the fact that almost all of those productions introduced exciting new writing teams to Broadway

Like most success stories ours has been the product of a great deal of hard work a modicum of talent and a large measure of luck

It is important to note that when we select new works for development or production we do not really spend any time considering the showrsquos chances for Broadway success It is virtually impossible to identify in advance what the next big Broadway hit will be and many people smarter than me have gone broke trying to do it

We have only three significant criteria that we use in picking projects we might want to get involved with First we look for immensely gifted bookwriters composers and lyricists ndash artists who are brimming with talent and craftsmanship and with whom we feel confident that we would want to spend what could be several years of collaboration Second we look for stories characters and subject matter that lend themselves to bold theatrical treatment and that cry out for musicalization Finally and perhaps most importantly we select musicals that speak to us and that we believe will engage challenge and entertain our large and loyal 5th Avenue audience If we meet those criteria we have attained success

We believe that The Musical is one of Americarsquos most important contributions to world culture and that it is vital to preserve and perpetuate it as such For this reason we have recently established a New Works Program that is already taking our commitment to the creation of new musicals far beyond what you see on our main stage

The New Works Program is dedicated to early stage development of new musicals through a variety of initiatives including commissions writerrsquos retreats staged readings and developmental workshops We currently have six exciting new projects in various stages of development three of which have been commissioned by The 5th In addition we have established a Seattle Writers Group that continues and expands our ongoing commitment to nurture and support our rich community of Northwest artists

We are investing in a new generation of composers bookwriters and lyricists Some of these new works may never reach production and others may take years to make it to our stage to or other theaters However we feel confident that this work is crucial to the future of the American Musical and that significant new additions to the musical theater canon will emerge from this program

Rupert Holmes the book writer for Secondhand Lions is a man of many parts mdash author of plays mystery novels and stories composer singer songwriter arranger conductor producer and session musician You may know him as the singer-songwriter of the 1979 number one pop hit ldquoEscape (The Pintildea Colada Song)rdquo or as the accomplished author of Broadway musicals and plays

Born in England of an American GI and his British wife he grew up in Nyack New York His family was highly musical his father was a music teacher his brother was an opera singer specializing in Gilbert and Sullivan and Holmes attended The Manhattan School of Music as a music theory major

Beginning in the 1970s his recording career flourished with his own solo albums (including 1974rsquos Widescreen) and with songs performed by Barbra Streisand and other prominent artists including Judy Collins Barry Manilow Dionne Warwick Rita Coolidge Dolly Parton and Manhattan Transfer

In the 1980s Holmes was encouraged by Public Theater producer Joe Papp to try his hand at a musical The result was The Mystery of Edwin Drood based on Charles Dickensrsquo last novel Dickens died before completing his story and Holmes hit on the

delightful device of allowing the audience to vote on a different murderer each night Drood was presented as part of the New York Shakespeare Festivalrsquos 1985 summer season in Central Park and then moved to Broadway where it earned Holmes Tony Awards for Best Book and Best Score and Drama Desk Awards for lyrics music book and orchestrations

Following the tragic loss of his young daughter Holmes found the act of writing music emotionally painful and turned instead to crafting tricky comedy-thrillers such as Accomplice and Solitary Confinement and a one-man play based on the life of George Burns Say Goodnight Gracie receiving a Tony nomination for Best Play

In 2006 Holmes joined the creative team of Curtains after the deaths of its original book writer Peter Stone and its lyricist Fred Ebb

Once Upon a Time in Texas

From Movie to MusicalSecondhand Lions is certainly not the first movie to become a musical Hairspray Catch Me If You Can 9 to 5 A Christmas Story ELF ndash these are just a few of the musicals recently seen at The 5th Avenue that had their first incarnations as feature films Some began as blockbusters while others were cult favorites before their transformation to the stage Mention it to 5th Avenue patrons and they fall into two camps when it comes to Secondhand Lions ndash theyrsquove either never heard of it or they name it as one of their favorite films

When New Line Cinema released it in 2003 Secondhand Lions (the movie) was both fresh and familiar ndash a young boy unwillingly goes to spend the summer in Texas with two great uncles hersquos never met

That summer stay changes the lives of both the young boy and his great uncles in touching and unexpected ways The film had a star-studded line up in the leading roles to recommend it ndash Michael Caine as Garth and Robert Duvall as Hub the two irascible uncles Haley Joel Osment as the filmrsquos young lead Walter and Kyra Sedgwick as Walterrsquos neglectful mother Mae

Writer and director Tim McCanlies cut his teeth writing action pictures in Hollywood for many years before writing the film script This coming-of-age tale was an especially personal project for the Texas native It took some time but eventually McCanlies convinced the studios that not only was the film worth making but also that he was the man to direct it

McCanlies describes his film this way ldquoI just felt that really good storytelling should be surprisinghellip I wrote this story from the heart dealing with issues that are personal to mehellipThis is not a comedy this is a drama Itrsquos just got comedy in it but these guys are playing it for realrdquo Getting the relationships and the tone of the humor right was also very important to McCanlies He notes ldquoItrsquos a very Texan sort of humorhellip a very dry sort -- you may say outrageous things but you say it with a straight facerdquo

There are always challenges in taking material written for the big screen and translating it to another medium What moments and characters are essential What scenes are impossible to stage live And just how do you make a ldquotalkierdquo sing

The opening of First Date at the Longacre Theatre in New York marks the eighth new musical The 5th Avenue has taken to Broadway since 2002 Of course you may recall that First Date premiered right here in Seattle as a 5th Avenue co-production with ACT Theatre in our 201112 season and played to nearly sold-out houses throughout its run

Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary who are responsible for the music and lyrics of First Date are the same team who have created the music and lyrics for Secondhand Lions You can read more about both of them on page 14-16 of this program

We send special congratulations to 5th Avenue Producing Director Bill Berry (who directed First Date both here in Seattle and on Broadway) and to lead producers Marleen and Kenny Alhadeff

Holmes rewrote the book for this backstage murder mystery musical and contributed additional lyrics to John Kanderrsquos score

The book for Curtains was nominated for a Tony and won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Book of a Musical

For television Holmes wrote the scripts and the theme song for the smartly nostalgic AMC series Remember WENN Recently he has turned to novel writing publishing Where the Truth Lies (made into a motion picture starring Colin Firth) and Swing

a multimedia novel with an accompanying music CD providing clues to the mystery

In October his new play A Time to Kill mdash the first-ever John Grisham property to be adapted for the stage mdash will open on Broadway shortly after Secondhand Lions has its world premiere at The 5th Avenue Theatre

The filmrsquos honesty and its strong imaginative storytelling resonated for the musicalrsquos creative team

When Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary were asked about turning the film into a musical their response was clearly enthusiastic ldquoWe felt that we could adapt the film to the stage and add a whole new layer to the piece that you couldnrsquot show on screen For instance the filmrsquos flashbacks work beautifully with Michael Caine narrating through a voiceover the story of his swashbuckling adventures

with his brother But in the musical we needed to give an actual ldquovoicerdquo to characters who had no dialogue [in the film] Rupertrsquos fresh and clever take on the filmrsquos sultan and princess got us very excited and the songs just flowed from thererdquo

With its rebirth as a new musical Secondhand Lions gets another chance to win over audiences with its humor and charm

A 5th Avenue Theatre ACT Collaboration

This summer marked the eighth year of The 5th Avenuersquos summer programs for youth More than 150 young students ages 11-20 spent July and August studying with professional actors directors and music directors During the two- and three-week sessions summer school participants learned a wide variety of skills essential for any musical theater performer Even more importantly they learned and practiced skills -- creative thinking clear communication building self-confidence problem-solving teamwork and more -- that will serve them well no matter what profession they may choose or where they may go in life Simply put The 5th Avenue believes that participation in the arts helps to build well-rounded human beings Providing opportunities like these summer school classes is an essential part of the theaterrsquos mission and its service to the community

For many students attending the summer school classes was a life-changing experience Here is what a few of them had to say

participation I started the program while

entering 8th grade and this upcoming

professional actors they have working

are 5th Avenue regulars college

me to grow not only as an actor but

RSP provides high school students with the opportunity to develop perform and market an all-student production of a 5th Avenue show on the main stage The Rising Star Project boosts confidence builds critical thinking and communication skills and helps students discover their passions

DAVID ARMSTRONG (Executive Producer and Artistic Director) Since his appointment in 2000 Armstrong has guided The 5th Avenue to a position as one of the nationrsquos leading musical theater companies acclaimed for both its development and production of new works and its innovative stagings of classic musicals As a director he has created memorable 5th Avenue productions of Candide Hello Dolly Sweeney Todd White Christmas Hair Mame A Little Night Music The Secret Garden Anything Goes Company The Rocky Horror Show Pippin

Vanities Yankee Doodle Dandy and Saving Aimee which made its Broadway debut as Scandalous under Armstrongrsquos direction in November 2012 Prior to The 5th he spent nearly 20 years as a freelance director choreographer and librettist His work has been seen in New York Los Angeles and at many leading regional theaters including The Kennedy Center Ordway Center Fordrsquos Theatre Cincinnati Playhouse and New Jerseyrsquos Paper Mill Playhouse From 1990 through 1995 he served as artistic director of Cohoes Music Hall in upstate NY Armstrong has also written the books for the musicals The Wonder Years (winner of seven Drama-Logue Awards) Gold Rush and Yankee Doodle Dandy

BERNADINE (BERNIE) C GRIFFIN (Managing Director) was appointed managing director in January 2010 and is responsible for the administrative fundraising information services and facility operations as well as oversight of all activities related to the Board of Directors Griffin first joined the Theatre in 2002 as director of theater advancement and development During her tenure The 5th Avenue has grown from a $10 million to a $25 million organization She brings to her position 30 years of fundraising and arts manage-

ment experience Prior to The 5th Avenue she served as director of development for the prestigious Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles as well as for The Laguna Playhouse in Laguna Beach California Before moving to California she served at the Seattle Symphony where she is proud to have been part of the team that built Benaroya Hall In addition to the Symphony Griffin worked for the Tony Award-winning Seattle Repertory Theatre as well as Tony Randallrsquos National Actors Theatre in New York She began her career at the University of Denver She received her Bachelor of Arts degree from St Martinrsquos University in Lacey Washington and is proud to have been born and raised in Walla Walla Washington She is a member of the National Alliance for Musical Theater and a board member of Seattle Rotary 4 Most recently she served as a grants panelist for the National Endowment of the Arts She is married to award-winning actor Seaacuten G Griffin

BILL BERRY (Producing Director) served as The 5th Avenuersquos associate producing artistic director and casting director from 2002 through 2009 During that time he directed productions of West Side Story (Seattle Times Footlight Award) Wonderful Town (Seattle Times Footlight Award) Wizard of Oz and Smokey Joersquos Cafeacute He recently made his Broadway debut as the director of the hit musical First Date at the Longacre Theatre Berryrsquos directing work has been seen at theaters across the country most recently at New Jerseyrsquos Paper Mill

Playhouse where he directed a critically acclaimed production of On the Town Directing highlights include Cabaret performed at The 5th Avenue Theatre St Paulrsquos Ordway Center (Ivey Award) San Josersquos American Musical Theatre and Houstonrsquos Theatre Under the Stars as well as the smash hits First Date and RENT at The 5th From 2002 to 2009 he served as the producing director for The 5th Avenuersquos education and outreach programs During that time he significantly expanded the scope and impact of these initiatives including spearheading the creation of Fridays at The 5th and The 5th Avenue Awards honoring excellence in high school musical theater as well as substantially increasing the reach of the Adventure Musical Theatre Touring Company throughout the Northwest These programs combined now serve 60000 students annually He also initiated the Show Talk series which seeks to deepen the theater-going experience Prior to his work at The 5th Avenue Theatre Berry was a freelance theater artist based in New York City
