PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

School Captain’s Induction Assembly

All of our elected school leaders will be inducted and have their badges presented at a special assembly

tomorrow at 10:00am. All parents, family and community members are most welcome to attend. We

also invite all of our visitors to join us for a morning tea after the ceremony.

Swimming Carnival

Who will be this year’s aquatic champions? This Friday, Beni & Goonoo will clash in the pool for one

of the most prestigious and sought after prizes, the Mendooran Central School Swimming Shield. It is

traditional that we have a great turn out for this event of students and parents with plenty of house spirit

and I look forward to this year being the same. Please remember that the carnival is a mandatory school

day that every student is expected to attend. A modified canteen menu will be available and published in

this newsletter.

Congratulations to all students

My congratulations and thanks go to all students for the excellent start to

the school year that we have had. All classes are working earnestly with

full cooperation and effort by all students. Although these are the standards

that I do expect and have come accustomed to seeing here at Mendooran, I

would like to acknowledge the effort being made by all students. Let’s

keep it up.

Our sincere condolences go to Brandon (Yr 9), Suzanne (Yr 10) and Cathy

Hall for the passing of Doug Hall. Doug has been an outstanding supporter

of the school since moving to Mendooran. Those who have had the

pleasure of getting to know Doug would know how much of a genuine and

caring person he was. His passing will be felt by many.

Canteen Helpers

We all know that Sharon Abbott does a wonderful job of managing our

school canteen. Unfortunately, she is also having to volunteer most days to

ensure that it is able to be open at all. If there are any Mums or Dads

available to help out (even one day a term) please consider calling to lend a

hand.

KINDERGARTEN/YEAR 1 NEWS Welcome to 2014! Year 1 students returned on Wednesday 29th January and our new Kindergarten

students commenced on Thursday, 30th January. We had an extremely successful start with no tears!

Library & Scripture will be held on Tuesday and Assembly & Sport on Friday.

News Day is as follows:

Our news topic for Weeks 2 & 3 is Family Celebrations & traditions. The students can bring

something along to show or discuss something based on these topics.

All equipment is supplied by the school for K/1 class however if all students could bring a Library bag

and a hat (a spare can be kept at school if you would like) that would be appreciated.

Homework will commence in Week 2 for Year 1. All students will be able to take home reading

books from Week 3. They will have a Home Reading card for parents to sign. As Kindergarten

students complete their weekly sound books they will bring these home. If the hand signs could be

practised with you at home that would be greatly appreciated so that the sounds are being reinforced at

school and at home.

Students have a brief fruit break mid-morning so it would be great if they could bring some fruit

(preferably cut up) in a labelled plastic bag or small container each day.

From time to time your child may need to be absent for the day but as much as it is possible it is

important for your child to attend school regularly and to be punctual so that they do not miss out on

vital learning. If your child is absent, a note explaining the absence is required prior or on the day of

return to school.

Should parents have alternate travelling home arrangements to the student’s usual travel home

arrangements at any time a note will be required or contact made with the school office.

The school Swimming Carnival will be held on Friday 14th February. All Infants will attend school

until recess then we will walk to the pool to participate in the Infants carnival. A separate note will be

sent home regarding this as well as what houses (Beni or Goonoo) the Kindergarten children are in.

K/YEAR 1 NEWS CONT. Thank you to all parents who sent in items for our K/1 room. We now have sufficient supplies.

Should parents have any concerns or queries (eg lost property, equipment or homework) I am only

too happy to discuss these with you so that we are working together to assist in your child’s overall

development. A general parent information afternoon will be held this Thursday 13th February at

3:30pm in the K/1 room. All are welcome!

YEARS 4/5/6 NEWS We have been very busy in 4/5/6 organising spelling, maths and reading groups and are getting into a

routine. Students finished their wonderful posters and I am starting to get to know everyone. For

homework this week students will practice their spelling and also plan, draft, edit and publish a

narrative based on the provided image. Students will continue to read “The Zoo” by Anthony

Browne. We will be looking at and discussing the illustrations and the message the author is sending

through the illustrations through the use of composition, colour, placement, framing, and negative

space. In maths last week we focused on place value of three to six digit numbers and changing

values by ten and one hundred. We also worked on reading analog and digital clocks and twenty-four

hour time. This week we will revise rounding numbers and number patterns. We will be investigating

state and territory emblems in COGS and researching information about zoos during our computer

time. It will be a busy week finishing with the Swimming Carnival on Friday.

YOUR LIBRARY NEWS Through the efforts of our community and our school budget we have a well resourced Library. We

would like to see students making more of the opportunity to use these resources for relaxation and

enjoyment as well as supporting them in their learning.

Borrowing Procedures:

Children are encouraged to borrow during Library lessons and classroom lessons. Borrowing may

also take place at lunchtimes and other appointed times. Returns may be put into the Returns Box in

the Library at any time.

Infants/Lower Primary: May borrow one resource.

Upper Primary: May borrow one fiction for classroom, one fiction for home and one

reference resource.

Secondary: May borrow two fiction and several reference resources plus text

books.

Length of Borrowing: Fortnightly duration but resources may be returned at any time within

that fortnight. TEXT BOOKS may be borrowed on a TERM BASIS.

After two weeks an overdue notice is sent home with the student. Please follow this up with your

child and contact librarian if you have further concerns.

If this is not followed up a note will go home attached to the newsletter.

If this is not followed up a letter will be sent home advising the parent of the replacement cost.

Please support your child by:

Providing a waterproof Library Bag. (Available for purchase at Main Office for $3.50)

Monitoring their borrowing and caring for Library resources at home.

Calling into the library to help select resources most suited to your child’s needs.

BOOKCLUB Mendooran Central School Library participates in SCHOLASTIC BOOKCLUB to provide quality

reading resources for you and your children at lower competitive prices.

Once a term you will receive a brochure with offers. If you wish to purchase from Bookclub you

need to cut out the order form and send with payment in an envelope to the MAIN OFFICE at school

by the return date. Cheques to be made out to Mendooran Central School or cash. Payment can

also be made by phone with the receipt number put on the order form and returned to the office for

processing. Purchases will arrive back at school within a fortnight after the return date. These will be

sent home with your child.

IF AT ANY TIME YOU WOULD LIKE TO USE YOUR PURCHASES AS GIFTS PLEASE

ADVISE THE LIBRARY STAFF AND WE WILL MAKE ALTERNATE DELIVERY

SECONDARY NEWS GENERAL Our Year 7 students have made a very smooth transition into high school. The staff are pleased with

their positive attitude and work ethic.

Our students have begun swimming the heats for the swimming carnival to be held this Friday. We

invite all parents and carers to join us on Friday, commencing at 9am.

The “Aspire” team from the University of NSW are visiting the school on February 28th, to work

with our years 10-12 students, looking at post school options including further education.

NEWS FROM THE LAB Well we’re back for 2014 and the year is looking great. We’ll be investigating the universe, scientific

classification, water, the origin of life, rocks, wave energy, communication… and that’s just some of

term 1. It’s going to be a busy time.

A quick note to students. If you have science classes timetabled please make sure you are wearing

covered and sturdy shoes. I need you all to have on solid shoes on when we are doing practical

activities for safety.

So bring you’re A game to the lab and let’s do some science.
