Here’s what they came up with; with the acronym “RIPPA”.

We want for HCCS Secondary to be known as a RIPPA school! You’ll

notice they added an extra linking word or two (as did the Crows) to

make the acronym more memorable, and I’m sure you agree that it

is! Although these qualities are already more than evident, this is

what the student leadership team will now work on further

developing and embedding into the school culture at HCCS

Secondary. Watch this space!

Here are some student responses from the day:

the Leadership Day improved my teamwork skills and helped me

become more confident in group discussions

I particularly enjoyed being able to brainstorm for the year ahead,

to listen to other people’s ideas and also express my own. I think the

day set a good tone for the rest of the year ahead.

the Leadership Day allowed me to learn about how to handle

specific situations when leading. I now know how to tailor my

responses to anyone's personality in order for them to understand

what I'm saying

I improved my skills on how to work in a team and I got extra

confidence in talking in front of a group

I learnt and became aware of the types of traits younger students

and fellow students wish to see or observe within other leaders.

We are truly blessed to be working with such a fine group of

individuals: not just the leadership group, but the student body in

general, who are so ably supported by our amazingly committed

staff with such heart for students and their learning.

Dear parents and caregivers,

Several weeks ago, we took the student leaders from HCCS

Secondary to the Adelaide Hills Council chambers in Stirling, for our

annual day of activities and discussion designed to build leadership

at our School. This included our School Captains, Vice Captains,

Secondary Student Voice (SSV) representatives, and our newly

elected House Captains and Vice Captains from Year 10 and

above.

Overall it was a very productive and enjoyable day (students rated it

8.5 out of 10 on average), with lots or practical ideas and personal

and team leadership development being the result. During the day,

we had some Q&A time with Mayor Bill Spragg, who commented

that we are the ONLY SCHOOL that does this, and that he enjoys

making time to come and talk to our students about his take on

leadership.

The day included a team-building activity (to warm up!), some time

to do ‘blue-sky’ planning to further develop both the SSV and House

systems, and some ‘mock meetings’; where students had a chance

to lead a discussion about an issue relevant to the student body,

whilst other students had been instructed to ‘play’ certain roles in the

meetings. We were blessed to have the company and contributions

of one our first alumni Ella Havriluk, who gave her time (before Uni

started!) on the day to share her thoughts on leadership and helped

lead the Mock meetings session.

The students also had a session on leadership qualities; ably led by

our two School Captains, Rose Clayton and Jack Rogers, which led

into a session by our new Principal, Tony Fielke. He shared from his

experience the link between coaching and leadership, and that

successful organisations often have easily remembered mantras that

members of the organisation refer to, to motivate and to guide

decision making. He discussed the ‘CRUSH’ mantra (Acronym for

Commitment, Respect, Unity, Strength of Character, Honesty), that

the Adelaide Crows use.

The Student leaders were then tasked with coming up with an easy-

to-remember acronym for HCCS Secondary. It needs to represent no

more than 5 qualities that students value as important to ‘live by’

and use when making decisions.

HCCS is grateful to Julia Thompson for overseeing the organization and practices . Thank you to Julia and Caz Grace for overseeing on c’ompetiion day’. Thank you also to all the parents for attending the early morning training sessions.

Although all of the HCCS swimmers experienced a level of excitement and nervousness, after a couple of swims they relaxed and were thriving in the competition and competed confidently and with determination and commitment.

Overall they improved dramatically on their initial trial times. The highlights were definitely the final school placing of 3

rd in the Hills District, with a small and

relatively inexperienced team.

The 10/11year old Freestyle Relay Team of Kara Scarborough, Maya Nambiar, Mungo Yates and Zoe Crawford, won the inaugural relay event with an outstanding team performance. The three girls set up Mungo with the slightest advantage going into the last leg of the relay, which Mungo swam with determination and converted to a win.

Eddie Martins swam off in the 100yards Freestyle Thompson Cup Final for boys and swam strongly improving on his heats time.

Likewise, Jasmin Crawford succeeded in making it into the Fastest 5 Breaststroke and Butterfly Finals.

A number of HCCS swimmers came first in the District in at least 1 stroke and will likely be selected for the SAPSASA competition.

Our Open Freestyle and Medley Relay Teams also should be congratulated on making it into the finals.

Our Open Freestyle and Medley Relay Teams also should be congratulated on making it into the finals.

A number of our swimmers took a risk and competed outside of their comfort zone. A huge congratulations to Cooper Grivell for swimming in the Breaststroke event and Maycie and Ellie Cunningham for competing in the Butterfly event. All three participated outside of their comfort zone in attempt to gain more points for HCCS. Well done to Cooper, Maycie and Ellie. Molly Grivell and Angus Crawford, as Captains offered support and assistance to all of the swimmers throughout the day.

As a group the team were positive, encouraging and supportive of each other and had heaps of fun. I am hopeful that the experience will inspire them to compete again next year and at any other opportunity that may arise. Julia Thompson

A big thank you to our wonderful groundsman,

Sam Tolhurst and Rinny Lions for all their hard work!

Recently, the ELC children have been thinking

about bugs and beetles. They had to think about:

where they might find bugs

what type of bugs they might discover

how they could record what they found.

The children came up with many places to look and

then set of with their partner and a magnifying glass.

When bugs and beetles were discovered a cry went

up and we all rushed to look. The children were

careful to replace the things that they lifted and re-

turn the bugs to their homes.

Back at the mat in the ELC, the children drew what they had discovered and asked the Educators to

write a sentence to describe their drawings.

Their fascination with bugs continues and the search

goes on ……

Year 6 – 7 Football Match

Over the coming weeks, all classes will have the

opportunity to ‘adventure’ into ‘The Faraway Lands’.

So far, our Educators, our ELC children and our

Year 7s have had the chance to cross over the

bridge to the land of ‘The Faraway Tree’. How

blessed is our community to have such an

amazing place right on our doorstep. Tony Fielke

will write an article in next week’s Newsletter on

the value of Nature Play and the benefits of

environment and sustainability programs.

HCCS Netball Congratulations to our Under 13 team who were Runners-Up in the Grand Final for Summer Netball.

They fought hard and played well as a team. A BIG

THANKS to their coach Sarah Barter and to all the

parents who assisted and supported.

HCCS will NOT have any teams competing in the

Winter season this year as we were unable to fill the

positions on the Netball committee. We would love to

consider teams in the future depending on student

interest and parent assistance.

HCCS staff would like to thank Sarah Barter for her

commitment as President over the last few years as

well all other families that have contributed making

HCCS netball so great.
